Darkfoxx 3: With A Vengeance

Recommended Posts

This challenge cycle will contain a week-long vacation in far-off lands. During my vacation, goal #1 stays to the best of my ability; goal #2 will hopefully be accomplished by the amount of walking we will be doing; goal #3 gets a pass - I plan to eat what I like within reason (I'll have to remember the 'reason' part - I don't want to make myself sick!); and goal #4 I will hopefully get to work on a fair amount.

Goal 1: Drink Like A Fish.

Drinking enough liquid to function properly has always been a struggle of mine, and I really should do something about that. My muscles will thank me. My goal this cycle is to get at least the government prescribed 64 ounces of water a day. drink at least 48 ounces of water a day + more if I'm feeling froggy. I had originally set out to do 64 ounces, but it was pointed out that that estimate is really general and has been proven to not really be based on anything. So, drink a minimum; if I'm thirsty, drink more.

+1 STA, +1 CHA for hydration. There is no 'failure' option here. It just has to happen.

Goal 2: I See Those Workouts. Let's Take Them A Little Further.

The goal this cycle is to continue with what I'm doing fitness-wise (2 days of cardio/strength + 2 days of yoga/strength) but to kick it up a notch. How, you might ask?

I'll be sticking with my Jillian Michaels Yoga Meltdown (parts 1 and 2) for the yoga portion, but this time I have set benchmarks.

Crow - Get into crow pose long enough to post a pic in my NF gear [goal thx to BlamedCat :) ].

And I'll do him one better - I'm adding Spider Pushups as an official goal for this cycle as well (not yoga, but whatever). Spurred on by BC's crazy finisher business, I plan to add Spider Pushups on to the end of my living room workouts until I'm great at them.

I will also be moving on to Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred Part 2 for my cardio/strength workouts. Let's see if this new routine makes me die :)

And I will be continuing with my jogging in place (and hopefully in the big outdoors). This cycle I *will* continuously break the 30 minute mark indoors jogging in place; and continue with the one block jog/one block walk for half an hour in the wild beyond.

+4 STR, +4 DEX for kicking what I'm already doing up a notch. I have 6 weeks to get into crow and it will happen. Ditto with continuing on with my workouts and trying something new. It's going to happen. Not necessarily during my vacation (though we'll be doing a lot of walking), but overall it is going to happen.

Goal 3: Metrics! All The Metrics!

I'm liking the accountability posting my meals daily has garnered and I'd like to do more with that. I want to really work on starting to change my body composition since I've just about got my pants size to where I want it; and to do this, I'd like to figure out what is actually going into my body nutrient-wise so I can learn how to monkey with the mix for optimal performance.

Here's how I am going to accomplish that:

I will be tracking my food intake through SELFNutrionData, with the gov'ment and My Fitness Pal for backup.

According to Paleo Guru Mark Bittman, the body needs a minimum of .5 grams of protein/pound of lean mass/day. This means for me, with a current lean mass of 88 pounds, I need 70 grams of protein a day.

Since I'd still like to lose a little weight, I should be sticking to under 80 grams of carbohydrates a day.

If everything is going great with the protein and carb mix (under 15 grams), 100 grams of fats is fine. That is if everything else is in line.

Source

The ultimate goal here is to decrease my body fat percentage to the 20-23% range, but for this cycle meaningful data is good enough.

According to my FitBit scale, my current BMI is: 32.7% (obese).

According to the Navy's metrics, my current BMI is: 34% (obese).

According to a random simple online BMI tracker, my current BMI is 24.5% (upper limit of normal).

Measurements

Neck at narrowest: 11 1/4"

Bust under breast: 32 3/4"

Waist at narrowest: 28 1/4"

Hip at widest: 41 1/2"

Thigh at thickest: 21"

Arm at widest: 10 1/2"

Weight at wakeup: 134.4 lbs.

Height: 5ft. 2 3/4 inches (5'2" for measuring purposes)

Still with me?

+3 WIS for tracking things with an eye toward further monkeying with the mix.

Goal 4: Finish What You've Started.

Back in January, a Facebook chain letter style 'pay it forward' challenge went out and I agreed to send 4 people something home made by the end of the year. I need to do something about that. The goal here is to finish something - either one of the market bags I'm making people, or a scarf or something. Actually, I need to finish the scarf I am knitting + 1 project for someone else. And some jam, so the stockpile I'm delivering to my aunt this July won't be slack - so far I have salted grapefruit jam and that's it.

+1 CON, +1 CHA - also has to happen. Finishing my scarf should take 2-3 weeks; I can knock out a bag in an afternoon if I really want to. Jam takes 30 minutes. Laziness is not an option.

I love your challenge title! "with a vengence", so appropriate.

Your goals are solid too - good way to build on last time :) But I noticed you didn't assign attribute points yet.

Also, what the heck is a spider push up? (yes, I know I could look it up - I just enjoy people awkwardly attempting to explain odd body positions with their words.Small pleasures hehehe)

And finally: salted grapefruit jam sounds SO good. My mouth is watering just thinking of it!

Drinking water is something I've been having trouble with lately too...I used to be really good, and then I grew up and started drinking coffee, and coffee started taking over the water :S

I've cut coffee out mostly now, but still need remind myself to at least drink when I'm thirsty!!

Have fun on your journey of far off lands btw! :D

@ Fonzico: I know. I suck at attributing points ahead of time. I will do so this time just for you :)

@Fonzico, @BlamedCat:

Spider pushups are this craziness:

Like a pushup with a knee kick onto your elbow. And balance. All the balance.

The salted grapefruit jam (the little bit I tasted at least) is fabulous and I'm thinking my aunt will love it. She devoured the 2 jars I sent her home with over Thanksgiving (a plum cardamom and strawberry bourbon).

Great ideas building on your goals from last time.

What I do with water is have enough chilled in bottles that needs to be drunk that day, then there is a clear visual of whats left, no trying to recall how many glasses etc.

And yeah *backs away from the spider* I think I'll leave you there with that, I would horribly hurt myself somehow if I even began to think about trying these things you do!

@Pookie: lol. I think that's a great idea (about the water bottles). I picked up 2 of the big Smartwater bottles (33.8 ounces each) over the weekend and think I'll be doing great if I can get 2 bottles in + my 16-20 ounce morning tea a day. And on the plus side, I will no longer have laziness as an excuse to not get up and drink water at night while watching tv - my usual excuse is that it's too cold out from under the blankets. Or I have a dog in my lap. Or I'm not that thirsty anyways. Now I will have no choice but to drink water!

The spider pushup is some craziness. The first time I tried, I fell on my face. Hopefully today's attempt will go better - I'm thinking of starting with the motion but a plank for the first few attempts in hopes to avoid crashing & burning. :)

Go for it.  It seems a bit more controlled for that stabilization you were looking for.  Later you can advance to the "push up" variety, but it certainly seems like something worth doing.  I know I'll be doing those after I get planks down easy peasy ;)

Week 1 Day 1 Update

Goal 1: Drink Like A Fish.

I drank all the water. I had 2 big bottles of Smartwater (33.8 ounces each), and a 16-20 ounce tea. It was rough getting through the first bottle; totally not gonna lie. My throat was unhappy about it and I was hating how fat and sloshy I felt all afternoon. Luckily I didn't let it deter me from working out and getting the second bottle down was easier.

I also woke up crazy thirsty this morning like always; not sure what that was all about.

Goal 2: I See Those Workouts. Let's Take Them A Little Further.

Ummm. Yeah. I went a little nutzo with this goal. I did 30 Day Shred Part 2 (first time), which totally kicked my ass. In doing that workout, I incorporated the plank knee up things from @BlamedCat's video during some kind of something I wasn't having luck with and then the video itself called for doing the same thing. So, double sets of crazy plank oblique killers. In doing those, I also worked a little on getting into a spider pushup - my hips are really tight and I wasn't able to get my knee up as far as I know I can.

Goal 3: Metrics! All The Metrics!

Oh, I metriced all right. Here is my metrics spreadsheet, which I will be updating daily (and as often as I can while on vacation) if you care to follow along.

I had my usual DH's green smoothie for breakfast; my favorite kale & edamame salad from Trader Joe's for lunch; a nice light dinner of chicken breasts rolled around asparagus and roasted red peppers with a scant sprinkle of Asiago cheese; a side of broiled asparagus with cheese sprinkle; and 2 tangerines for a snack.

TIL that my morning smoothie has 59 grams of carbohydrates, which is going to make getting under 80 grams per day on the hard side if I decide to move that way; I got crazy amounts of Vitamin A (455%) and Vitamin C (566%) yesterday; getting 70g of protein is easy (I got 85g yesterday and only had meat with one meal); fat limiting isn't terribly hard either (I got 50g yesterday); and I ate about 1306 calories total.

Goal 4: Finish What You've Started.

And I even did a little work on this goal. I learned how to join a new yarn skein when knitting, joined it, and got about 45 minutes of knitting in.

Off to a great start so far; let's see if I can keep it up tonight - we're off to Best Buy for hopefully the last damn time to pick up the broken-by-Geeksquad hard drive. And we're thinking Panera for dinner, since it's either that, Applebees, or food court food and I don't do Applebees or the food court. I still plan on getting in a yoga workout before leaving tonight. Hopefully that will happen.

oooo nice spreadsheet! *laughs* I love tracking and tweaking, I plan my meals ahead so I can fiddle with them and get my carbs/protein and other stuff all balanced out. I personally track Calcium, Fibre, Vitamin B-12/B-6, Sodium, Iron, Zinc, Vitamin A, Folate, Magnesium and Vitamin D as well as the basic's.

Good going on the water, I made it a daily habit a long long time ago, with the fridge trick and now its easy to achieve, but at first was hard. My fiancé laughs though how much I go to the bathroom!

We shall see how this spreadsheet goes. I have a tendency to fall off the deep end with tracking, but since it's no pressure this cycle, I'm hoping everything will be smooth sailing (and panic at not hitting goals free).

This water business is something that just needs to happen - it's not my favorite right now, but hopefully by the end of the challenge it will be second nature. :)

Do you think? My hubby mentioned the same thing, too, when I was talking about drinking more water. I figured gov. recs. was a good baseline space to start, but you're both right - it's not a one-size fits all (or maybe not anyone) metric.

I'm not sure how else to tell if you're getting enough water daily, though. Which seems completely boneheaded when I type it aloud, but um... yeah. I don't generally even think twice about being thirsty all day - or I drink all the water and feel fat and bloated.

On my own I'm not one for happy mediums.

I'm imagining longer term than today my skin won't have dry white lines if I scratch it, my cuticles won't be so loose and begging to be picked, and my back won't be so itchy. I'm also hoping to avoid jet lag (I've heard proper hydration helps with that).

So... any ideas how much water would be good enough? I would say maybe do what I'm doing but not push it until I feel gross; but that's a dangerous, slippery slope right there.

@BlamedCat: the easy answer there would be to quit doing that. :) Wasting food is really hard for me too - I remember being a kid and the old 'there are starving children in Africa that would kill for that *insert the rare food I wouldn't eat here*' saying really stuck with me. You've just got to give yourself permission to get rid of the things that are bad for you. Weigh the cost of the item with how exactly like crap you're going to feel if you consume it -- I'm willing to bet (unless of course you bought gold brick bread), that it won't even out. Just let it go.

I totally hear what you're saying.  You've seen my bread goal this challenge.  I'm working in the unexpected things like the family making hamburger helper for dinner, etc... (like tonight :( ), but I can't say "lets not make that which will feed the whole family"...   My wife has given me permission to get something else for dinner though... so yay...

As far as the gold brick bread... actually, Ezekiel bread is kinda like that lol.  I just ate the last of it and it really doesn't mess with me (in my thoughts) as much as like whole wheat bread, or pizza (oh how I miss thee)...

Good news is, I consumed the last of my Ezekiel bread and am moving on... I'm having a delicious avocado and sweet potato for lunch.

If you feel like you need some guidelines in order not to slide down that slippery slope, my super-unscientific suggestion would be to still assign yourself a minimum, just a lower one than you have now. Trial it for a couple weeks, and reevaluate. Like you said, with time your body should show some good signs of proper hydration, but there's an upper limit on good returns there, right?

This is fairly arbitrary, but maybe start with 48oz a day, and see how that goes? I'm assuming that's still more than you were typically getting before, but hopefully shouldn't be so much that you'll get sloshy :) Basically, one of your water bottles, plus your tea. Just my 2 cents, but I have a hunch you'll feel both hydrated and not water-logged.

You're probably right and that's probably a safe bet. I think it was even what the hubbs was getting at :) Ok. Challenge amended (or will be in a sec.) to include 48 ounces of water + more if I'm feeling froggy!

I have been observing and would like to agree.  I'd agree about the general starting point with the water.  The good thing is that since you're not eating a lot of fried foods, then the water content in those foods is going to be higher than otherwise too, so that'll help. I figure as long as you aren't running around feeling like a water-logged hippo, then you're doing fine :)
