Sometimes the Monk has to leave the monastery for a while but he never stops being a monk or planning for his return. Sometimes I feel like atlas holding the whole weight of the world but when I consider its separate elements the burden becomes lighter. The world is made of earth, fire, water and and wind. I will bear the burden of it by breaking it down into manageable pieces.

What is the smallest piece of earth but a grain of sand? From a grain of sand i will get the pearl of great strength. Each week I will add one rep to each of my sets of body weight training.

+3 STR +2 CHA

I will feel the burn of fire. HIIT 1X a week for each: running, swimming and biking.

+3 STA +2 CON

I will flow like water through a stretching routine, my forms, and my breaking routine 2X a week

+3 DEX

The wind cries Mary and I will cry with it by reading through the psalms and writing a psalm of my own each week.

This challenge doesn't emphasize my TKD that much but it does support it's growth. In October I took a job that really derailed my work outs and diet. Well I tried an an experiment with my eating and it confirmed somethings. One of them was that wheat and sugar really are poison. I had been eating about 80% paleo and training for a half marathon last summer. When I started eating without thought of health my reflux came back as well as afternoon lethargy. Last week I finished a 21 day sugar detox and out went the reflux and my energy has returned and it confirmed for me what I always preached but did not always practice that diet is soooooooooooooo very important. This challenge is priming me to knock two goals off off my epic quest this year. Compete in a triathlon (July) and get my fourth dan (October). Since the triathlon comes first it is getting the focus on this challenge.

Yes to eating right! We've got killer pollen here in NC, and it always used to just slay me, but because I'm eating hardcore Primal now, I barely feel anything from the pollen. Maybe a little sleepy, but sleeping and breathing is a great trade over stuffed up and not sleeping.

Good luck with your psalms!

Poetic! And bonus points for working in some Hendrix.

I almost did not put the Hedrix quote in there but I am glad I did.

Monday I hit my body weight training

pullups 4 4 4 lunge squats 10 10 10

chin ups 11 11 11 hip raises 12 12 12

YTI 12 12 12 Ab wheel 5 5 5

leg lifts 8 8 8 single arm tricep extension and both arm 10 ea X 3

If I am able to gain the "pearl of great strength" on these it will be a considerable increase. the least would be a 50% increase and the best 120% so we will see what we get.

Tuesday HIIT in the pool

100M slow 50M fast 5X plus 50M being a sea horse with each of my boys on my back

Wednesday house chores and homeschooling with bonus gokarting because a friend gave us some free rides and my boys got their school work done on time.

Have been reading some Psalms before I go to bed and I will write one on Sunday. It will be a psalm of the Lords provision in my life. I am thinking I will tie it into our experience in adopting our daughter from Ethiopia and the amazing provision and blessing we recieved in doing that.

Today I will go to the Dojang and do my "water" thing as well as body wieght work out and then HIIT on the bike.

Awesome goals! I like you last one: writing your own spalms! Care to post any?

Good luck with you diet: I had the same realization when trying paleo for a month: felt sooo much better. As soon as I started eating sugar again I crashed big time. Thats the reason I added to processed grains in my challenge.

Good luckkkkk! :)

Thursday and Friday were fitness washes but major family time so it was worth it. That meant tripling up today.

HIIT RUNNING 5 min warmup 1 min fast 1 1/2 min steady x9 (11 burpees for initial warm up)

Forms, breaking practice and stretching for the cool down

Practiced each breaking technique 10x except I did not do the run up for the flying multi break.

Did 3 forms (kum gong, koryo 2, taebek) slow motion with my eyes closed

Stretching.

BW circuit

4-4-4 chin up 10-10-10 lunge squat

12-12-12 hip raise 11-11-11 push ups

12-12-12 YTI 5-5-5 ab wheel

8-8-8 leg lift 5 sec hold on last one 10-10-10 each arm and both tricep extensions

Doing the squats after running was a beast.

Awesome workout!

Which techniques did you practice with breaking? Do you use rebreakable boards?

just doing the techniques by myself with out targets right now

next week will do them with focus pads and then move on to breakable boards.

dual speed break ridgehand then back elbow

step side kick (hoping to go for 3 paver bricks)

palm heel strike forward (2 paver bricks)

triple break single boards flying round kick, back kick & punch

I am not testing until October so I am giving myself plenty (i hope) of time to practice the last one.

I did 2 bricks on the side kick when I went for my 3rd so I know I can at least do that many.

4-4-4 chin up 10-10-10 lunge squats

12-12-12 hip raise 11-11-11 push up

12-12-12 YTI 5-5-5 ab wheel

8-8-8 leg lift 5 sec hold on last one 10-10-10 tricep extension each arm and both together.

I did this 3x this week and that is my goal. I am beginning to think that grain of sand is going to be bigger than I anticipated. Next week I add 1 rep to each set.

HIIT on the bicycle 5 min warm up 15 sec hard 30 sec steady 5.3 miles today.

Got all three in this week.

Forms (basic 6,7,8) walked through breaking techniques and then stretched. 2x this week.

Read the psalms and wrote one.

It was inspired by His word and the adoption of our daughter from Ethiopia. 6 years ago we felt led to adopt a 12 year old girl and it was only through Gods provision that it happened.

You are not far though the heavens are Your dwelling place, I am Your temple You dwell in me.

You are Father to the fatherless, Through Your Son we become Your heirs

You know our need before we know ourselves, You provide all we need

You care for the orphans, You seek the lost child.

You first loved us, that we may love others

You love us all, All the nations You love

You call your people to action, Your people act upon your will

Though we have need, You have our provision

Your love is boundless, Your love has no borders

All around the globe your love is shown, Across the seas your love has flown

Faithful and humbly I follow Your leading of my heart

Your glory is seen in the love of your people, In their care for one another you are glorified

You hear the cries of those without a mother, You answer a mother's prayers

You give brothers and a sister to one without siblings, to her with out a family you have given a home

Where there was sorrow you bring joy, The joy of The Lord is my strength.

I praise your provision, I am grateful for Your love

Nice! These are all the breaks you are planning on doing for you testing? You are testing for 4th Dan?

Yes.  4th dan.  I was just thinking this morning that I haven't done any sparring in 5 years.  I am planning on going to the sparring class next saturday. I am sure it will be an eye opener.

I agree, I hope you post more of your writings. I love psalms, but I have never heard of anyone writing their own! I love the story of your family's adoption, it really is a great example of faith in action. Good luck with the sparring!

No sparring? In 5 years?

For shame, sir.

<hangs head I will head to the dojo to remedy that tonight after work>

I have found it is like prayer but on a deeper level.  To be honest and aware and humbled by what blessings I have. I highly recommend it.

Unfortunately I got out of work an hour and a half late and missed sparring. I was hoping to do it tomorrow but I ran over my son's glasses in the car and so I will spend my Wednesday looking for new glasses.

I did get to go swimming today and did my interval training.

Also did my bodyweight workout and added the grain of sand.

5-5-5 Chin-ups 11-11-11 Split leg squats

12-12-12- Push-ups 13-13-13 hip raises

12-12-12 YTI 6-6-6 ab wheel

9-9-9 leg lifts 6 sec hold on last one 11-11-11 tricep extension each arm then both

I feel spent and strong at the same time. I love a good work out.

I read psalms last night. I'm thinking the next one will be modeled after the 23 psalm but in relation to my work.

Feeling good about the challenge.

You ran over eye-glasses?!? Did you not see them? How ironic....

Good job on the work out - I LOVE it when you're spent and strong. Huzzah!!
