LadySpazalot: Adventures in training

Recommended Posts

Hi! My name is LadySpazalot, I'm currently a freshman in college working toward becoming a costume designer. I've always struggled with weight and body issue, going on and off diets and exercise regimes that never really worked. When I found out that there was a parkour gym near my apartment, I decided that I HAD to learn. However, I am in no condition to start that quite yet. My life is extremely busy, so I'm looking to balance healthy eating and exercise with maxed credit courses and the various shows that CONSUME my life.

1) Cut out all sugary drinks. I have a newfound addiction to cranberry Peace Tea and iced mochas. I'm hoping since these addictions have both started within the last few months that they'll be easier to cut. Orange juice, cranberry juice, and limeade will be the hardest. I do plan to allow myself juices when they are freshly squeezed, homemade, and I know EXACTLY what is in them. + 3 CON

I'm going to allow myself one sugary drink for this coming week, because it's going to be a nasty one and I'm still transitioning, but after this week, I'm going cold turkey.

1 drink for the week (other than this one) is a C

2 F

2) Cut out pre-cooked meals. During tech weeks and performances, I've taken to eating a lot of frozen/ boxed mac and cheese and such. The sodium level in these just makes me feel gross all day, so they are out! I plan to prepare meals on the weekends to make eating easier during the week, and to utilize my crockpot a lot more. +3 CON

*Pre-made salads with dressing on the side are fine, as are sandwiches because it is not possible to cook every night in the dorms.

1 slip for the week is a B

2 C

3 F

3) Beginning parkour training. I plan to do 2 sets thrice a week of 10 squats, pushups, legups, and "pull-ups". I cannot do pull-ups yet, but I'll be doing inverted body rows to build up to them as shown

+3 STR +1 STA +1 DEX

3 Days/ week A

2 B

1 F

4) Set-up business goals. I'm looking to start my costuming business on a small scale this summer. Before I can do that, I have a lot of research to do. Therefore, as one of my goals, I will be researching everything I need to start my shop, and drafting paperwork. +3 WIS +1 CHAR

This one is hard to quantify . . any ideas?

nice goals, the sugary drinks ive found to be challenging myself, water with a slice of lemon/lime has helped sofar

i can understand how hard the precooked meals and frozen dinners are, i lived off KD in university, cheap and delicious! since graduating ive been cooking more meals, its costing more than KD, but for the variety and health the little extra its costing is worth it!

im new at this myself but i think your only allowed 15 points per challenge/level..

Have Fun!

One of my goals this challenge is to allow myself only one beverage a day with calories in it. I find that if I shoot for that beverage being with dinner I don't crave the drinks all day. I know I can have one at the end of the day and I am able to focus on drinking my water or water with Mio or lemon added for flavor. It has been a great way to transition without the feeling of deprivation that I usually struggle with.

Not sure you'll have the same reaction, but I cut out my daily coke (as in cola, not caine) for a little over a month and had ONE today... and I'm in a lot of actual pain. Almost as soon as I finished the can I felt very strong cramps, similiar to... ya know... "girl cramps" and still have them, 3 hours later.

Nothing like physical pain to deter me from doing that again.

Good luck

Thank you! I miscounted. . . I'm going to go ahead and chalk it up to "tech-week-itis". I have no brain left.

Costuming, neat! I've been admiring the work on Once Upon a Time if you watch that. Great planning ahead with your meals. Definitely doable. Good luck with your business too. I think doing it yourself is the way to go!

Hahaha. . . right now I'm working a show called "Once Upon A Time 6 Times in the West" so I was a little freaked at first when I read that. >.< But yes, Once Upon a Time is costume porn. I adore it.

This weekend I managed to make most of my meals homemade (Pioneer Woman's baked ziti for Saturday and beef burritos using homemade refried beans, meat, rice, and guacamole for Sunday) supplementing with salads and mandarine oranges (I have a serious addiction). However, I'm starting to feel a bit overwhelmed (not by the fitness goals, just in general). My course load this quarter is intense, which coupled with working crew for one show and doing design work for a second is leaving me awake at 5 am doing homework. I've still been mixing my workout in with studying to keep me awake.

I have 2 exams tomorrow (Macroeconomics and Financial Accounting), and the final draft of a paper due on Friday for my Plays and Styles Analysis class.

Wow, do you ever have a busy schedule!

Love your goals....a costume designer!  I always loved making my kids Halloween costumes, I can't imagine coming up with some of the stuff they have in theater and movies!

Hope the pre-made meals are going well, sounds like your week will be a bear!

I will be more than happy to help in your costuming business! Are you doing any kind of costumes or just like, cosplaying? If you're in need of a guinea pig, I'll gladly sign up = D

Awesome goals and I know you'll be able to accomplish them!

Thank you Huntress! Yeah. . . the tests didn't go *so* well, but they were the first exams of the quarter, so now I know more what to expect.

And Simply Tsudere, Yay! :) My initial phase will probably just be faerie wings, tiaras, and scepters just because these are super easy to make and I can balance them easily with studies. Then I will probably add geeky kitschy circle skirts to the mix (I have a SUPER adorbs Marvel comic book skirt and 2 Star Wars ones in my closet right now. . . ) Once I get out of college, I'll begin selling cosplays and general costumes to supplement my work with theater costuming. Of course, I'll be making personal cosplays before then (I'm so excited for my Steamcon one!) but I probably won't begin selling them until I'm not in danger of failing. So really, starting my business this summer is just to give me an edge to get into business school.

That's so cool. I have no type of artistic niche about me. If you ever do those really cool (and pretty) flower crowns, let me know and I'll totally buy some! I love those! Just open a Etsy store and I'll definitely support the cause!

Thanks! I'll probably do my own website rather than Etsy, since Etsy takes a large-ish cut of what you make and you have to leave your prices pretty low in order to compete with other artists.

I've been thinking about starting the paleo diet. BUT I'm a college kid and rice, beans and pasta are SO CHEAP. Also, I have lots of these items on my shelf. I'm considering going paleo except on Sundays so I can gradually clean out my pasta and rice. Thoughts?

In terms of getting rid of your starches (like the rice and beans), I think your plan sounds like a good way to not waste what you have already purchased. Although, unless you have like a 25 lb bag of each, rice and beans are so cheap that you can get rid of several bags of each and not be wasting more than a few bucks (unless they are the fancy "steamable" bags or whatever). Maybe give them to a roommate or donate to your local food pantry, so you aren't throwing food away.

For the sugary drinks substitute, I LOVE using flavored liquid stevia in carbonated soda or making herbal teas and pouring them over ice and stevia. Or make kombucha! Delish and incredibly healthy! +1 for fermented drinks :)

Great job so far :)

Thanks! I just don't want to waste a single dollar >.< I have so few!

I can't use any sugar substitutes because they trigger migraines. But it's okay! I love tea without anything in it.

The past couple of days I haven't even wanted any sweet drinks. . . or much food, but I made myself eat a couple times. I've been eating a lot of mandarin oranges though. Probably not the greatest thing, but I adore fruit.

My thought is, if you wanna do it, do it... but why not see if you can do a meal plan and food budget before you do it, to make sure you stay within your weekly budget.

Also, seriously, don't feel bad about the fruit. Maybe I'm biased, but I think you're snacking on one of the best things you can snack on.

The meal plan/ budget sounds like a good idea. . . especially since I have 0 more real dollars for the month and am limited to the things I can get from the grocery store that takes my meal card. Which is just a small, expensive place. I usually get my produce there anyway, but use Trader Joe for just about everything else.

Ugh. . . I'm bad at this whole diet thing. . . I had to go retrieve my student id from a girl who found it after I'd dropped it. I agreed to meet up with her at some event, but she didn't tell me that this event was some sorority girl pageant thing. I got the most horrid bout of social anxiety and ended up leaving in tears, with a stomach cramp, and no id. . . So, I sought the comfort of my friends Mac 'n' cheese with bratwurst and Betty C brownies. . .
