bigm141414
If you have a particular weakness in horizontal pulling then BB rows are the way to go. They also help balance out the bench pressing much more so than OHP. (OHP and pullups are a better opposite than OHP and bench). Gainsdalf the Whey
If you have a particular weakness in horizontal pulling then BB rows are the way to go. They also help balance out the bench pressing much more so than OHP. (OHP and pullups are a better opposite than OHP and bench). OHP isn't meant to be the opposite movement of the bench, it's supposed to be a compliment like power cleans are to deadlifts. The powercleans or rows, whichever they are, develop the musculature that opposes the bench press movement. You might wanna add rows anyway as that horizontal pulling isn't covered much in SS. Switch to higher volume is at the advice of a powerlifting-focused trainer, whom I respect knows his stuff. I've been stalling a lot with progress (or it feels like it), and he thinks more volume would help. I don't have any particular deadlift weaknesses, though I reckon my grip could be a bit better, and my upper back rounds a bit on heavy lifts (like 1RM or at the end of a high rep set). After looking at my form for a while, the trainer reckoned my form was fine (well, some slight changes to feet position/grip), and the problem with my back rounding wasn't showing up, and can probably be put down to simply not being strong enough! *lol* He's not a fan of power cleans, but neither did he recommend an alternative. I don't really know why SS loves powercleans and SL loves rows - thought some people might like to weigh in and enlighten me? Oh, I think you should try to increase volume as looking at one thing that might help, yes, but not by adding more sets across like that. In order to accomplish all the reps in 5x5 vs 3x5, you have to work out at a lower intensity such as 5x5x135 instead of 3x5x145. women especially respond better to higher intensities than men do, so you don't want to reduce that. What I would suggest instead would be to stick to 3x5 and keep the intensity up then add either 3x10 at a lower weight (such as squats at 3x5x145 then 3x10x95, all numbers arbitrary) to up the volume or add in a 3x8-10 assistance movement, such as doing 3x5 squats followed by 3x8 good mornings. Personally, what I did after I started stalling on 3x5 was Bill Starr's 5x5 through using Madcow and had crazy gains in the first few months of this year. It's a weekly periodization where you work up to 1 heavy set of 5, which lets you go heavier (higher intensity) than 3x5 since you don't have to save anything for later sets. The program I used is HERE if you wanna take a look. The reason SS loves power cleans is because it's a fast, powerful movement that is more applicable to athleticism. SL loves rows because they are a very simple, easy to learn exercise that hits the back well. Been thinking of making the hop from the Rangers for a while, and I finally took the plunge. Glad to be here with the lifting and eating crowd. Nope that is spot on. The power clean is a difficult movement to learn given its explosive nature and high rate of bar speed. It takes time to learn correctly on your own, more so than the other powerlifts. weirdquark
I'm switching from 3x5 (Starting Strength) to 5x5 (Stronglifts). Opinions on possibly changing from powercleans to either barbell rows or more deadlifts, for workout A? (Workout B is deadlifts.) Anyone doing Stronglifts want to share what their warmup is like? I was only doing 5x5 with squats and I've been 'over warming up' lately, which means working up to a heavy single (not trying for a 1RM, so keeping it lighter than that and just doing something heavier than my work weight) before doing my work sets. Makes the work sets feel lighter and I get a little extra intensity work in. I've been doing similar things with bench and OHP, though the working up to the heavy single counts more as the actual lifting with 3x5 as 'back-off' sets for bench and 3x10 back-off sets for OHP. No real reason to do one back off set as fives and the other as tens; it's a hard call as to whether less volume at higher weights or more volume at lower ones is more helpful and probably depends on the goals. I lift heavy things. Current Challenge Between Challenges Workout Log Sassafrass: a capella folk fantasy mythology Link to comment

Opinions on possibly changing from powercleans to either barbell rows or more deadlifts, for workout A? (Workout B is deadlifts.) Anyone doing Stronglifts want to share what their warmup is like? I'm doing a routine kinda derived from both SS & SL: Squats 5x5OHP 5x5 (or) BP 5x5DL 1x5 My warmup is usually http://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/2012/01/09/warm-up/, and for warmup sets I do something roughly like: Squats1x5 @ bar1x5 @ 651x5 @ 851x5 @ 955x5 @ 110 (work weight) BP & OHP are the same, I try for 3 - 4 warmup sets before my work weight DL is the only one I don't warm up yet, I just do the 1x5 at whatever weight I'm up to. My plan is to start DL warmups sometime after I move beyond 135lb. Hope all that is useful! SpecialSundae
HEYYY!! I'm back, my back's back, my form has been ripped to shreds and I've got a lot to work on. My warm-up's pretty similar to Chronodon's, although I do some silly cardio stuff with Your Shape, kneeling clap push-ups and burpees instead of the NF warm-up. Trying to work out my goals for this time 'round. I should have started thinking about them before! Thinking more strength, once a week Ashtanga yoga, a calorie goal (basically, not letting my calories drop too low because that totally screws me... if I'm under 1500 for two or more days I really feel it) and a positivity goal (find at least one positive achievement per week and write about it - even if it has to be deeply anonymised for the boards).
