Croman Red, Fifth Challenge: To Hell and back.

Recommended Posts

This challenge period will be heavily influenced by several external events, so figuring out how to make this a success story will be a challenge in itself.

The first 10 days of this challenge I'll be back in the States visiting, so working out and eating right will require the kind of dedication that I've been lacking the last couple of weeks.

I have the Zugspitze Ultratrail on 22 June, so I'm going to be on crutches (don't laugh, it can happen!) for a week or two afterwards and will have to adjust my workouts accordingly.

My current projects at work will end and it looks like things will slow way down for a few months, so I might be able to start expanding my workouts into new areas.

With all of that in mind, this challenge is looking like:

1.  Maintenance running:  5-10 miles 3-5 days a week?  Still have some questionable owies from the last ultra that might affect this.  Gotta make sure I'm good for the Zugspitz.

2.  Body Weight exercises:  I'm looking at chipping away at some upper body and core development. I want to work at one arm push ups, hand stands, hollow bodies, maybe some dragon flags.  Not concerned with any uber-achievements this time around, just looking for laying foundations for continuous work over multiple challenges.

3.  Diet and Drinking:  Having proven to myself that I can run 30-40 miles a week and still maintain a gut, I need to reintroduce moderation here.  Probably won't do a major fast this time because I don't want to sabotage the Zugspitze or the recovery afterwards.  This is just about portion control and content.

4.  Achievements:  This covers items that either happen once or which I don't want to formally commit to at this time:

-Zugspitze Ultratrail:  This is only going to happen once.  Its the culmination of where I've been heading for the last two challenges, so its The Big Deal this time around.  Not sure I'll be able to make the time hacks, so completion is optional.  Success here is about seeing where my limits are with respect to this challenge.  I think engineers call this "testing to destruction" or something like that.

-Mini Challenges:  I've gotten away from participating in these for the last couple of challenges, so I figure I'll try to do at least one or two this time to get back into the groove.

-Promote the Heresy:  I don't think this thing has gone critical mass and taken on a life of its own yet, so I need to keep an eye out for opportunities to spread the madness.  This involves ongoing harassment of our Fearless Leader.

-Lifting:  Been wanting to start lifting again but haven't wanted to work contrary to the ultra effort.  Should have the chance to start working it back in along the way.

Ah, yes.  Another "gonna have to play it fast and loose" challenge.  Color me shocked. ;)

Sounds like you'll have a lot going on in the next six weeks, but that you've thought a lot about all the roadblocks and how you will smash them with your giant caveman club.  Or do you use your bare hands?  I can't remember if you know how to use tools or not...

I am fully embracing life outside my comfort zone this challenge.  Granted "outside my comfort zone" = moderation and stress reduction, but it's still uncomfortable and I have you to thank for it.  You have an amazing talent for both encouragement and heckling that leaves me... motivated.  I am looking forward to going another 6 rounds with you.

Still trying to decide which side of the data-driven fence I fall on: my science background compels me to track stuff, but there is a certain reckless appeal to "The Heresy." Definitely going to keep an eye on things to help me decide (as well as steal some of your training to prep for my Spartan Beast in November).

I know how you feel, I come from a science background too, but have spent my life perfecting the art of winging it (note: I have not perfected this). I'm slowly getting dragged to the dark side, I mean, chart side, however.... I'm limiting it a a wee notebook though.

Wow.  I love all of you, but, DAMN, its not that difficult!

Science is a tool.  Its a great tool (if you're the kind of primate that plays well with tools, I'm not).  Its a means, not an end.  Use it if you must, (don't be ashamed, just try not to do it in public), but don't forget to EMBRACE THE MADNESS!  You don't work out or diet to build a sexier spreadsheet (Wolverine excepted); you do it to build a sexier life.  I'M TALKING ABOUT ADVENTURE, DANGER, ROMANCE, AND LUST!

Chaossins LUST for more out of life.  We are caught up in the ROMANCE  of seizing life and living it.  We seek the ADVENTURE that begins when we get up off the couch, look in the mirror, and decide to change.  We do it because its DANGEROUS, because we know it will take us places where we will do things that we've never done before and this will change us forever.

Chaossins know its less important to succeed at a goal than to attempt one that might result in glorious failure.  We know "its better to burn in than to fade away"!*  (Thank you Kurgen.)

So join The Heresy and push the envelope like you've never pushed it before.

*In the spirit of "mixingitupbecauseIcan" I'm starting a splinter faction of The Heresy and calling them the ChaoZens.  They believe in leaping off the cliff because they know the net will appear.  Not sure how this one will work out...

This thread is full of awesomeness.  I'm inspired and giggling. Now ready to go out and conquer the world-well almost ready, I have fluorescent green shoes, but no fluorescent pink pants. My spreadsheet does have pretty colors, and I am checking the forum instead of updating my spread sheet.

Meditated for 10 minutes.

Notes:

Got a Suunto Ambit for my B-Day.  Used it for the first time today.  Still getting the program down, but liking what it tracks.  Does all kinds of graphs and whatnot with zero data entry on my part.  The down side is that I can't do a pink chart or enter false data.  The up side is that I don't have to map out my route beforehand.
