Croman Red, Fifth Challenge: To Hell and back.

Recommended Posts

I do a fair amount of trail running now.  And, yes - I have many trail races coming my way.  A ten miler in three weeks, an 8-10 miler in Sept, two weeks before the 13 mile up and down the mountain running I'll be doing.

That all sounds fun! I miss running, but not the constant ache in my foot....

So you broke a metatarsal or something?

They said it didn't break, but moved (a lot given the ideal situation) into a new, much nastier position, and nothing to be done about it. Hurt for a few years, then the pain faded. That's actually how I started skating, needed something to keep me sane when I stopped running for an hour or three every day.

Damn.  That's a kick in the tenders.  Never to run again?

I can do short distances, but that's about it. If I cover too much ground the ache starts to build up...and after the first time, I don't need three years of my foot hurting. That seriously sucked.

4 July 13:  Into the gym.

8 minutes mobility work

20 minutes stretching

Pull ups x 3.5

Burpees x 11

Dragon Flags x 10 (really poor form, had trouble getting below a 45 degree angle)

Good Mornings x DL10* x 29kg

Snatches x DL10 x 29kg

Squat x DL10 x 29kg

SLDL (Straight Leg Dead Lift) x DL10 x 29kg

Standing Rows x DL10 x 7.7kg (7.7kg is the weight of the curl bar)

Bent Rows x DL10 x 7.7kg

Rear Flies x DL10 x 2.5kg

NGI Bench (Narrow Grip Incline Bench)** x DL10 x 29kg

STPO (Supine Triceps Pull Over) x DL10 x 10kg

Notes:

*DL10 = "Descending Ladder" from a beginning set of 10.  What I do is a set of 10, hold the weight at the point of max effort for a count of 10, go straight into a set of 9, hold the weight for a count of 10, and so on down to a set of one followed by a count of 10.   If I counted right its 56 reps combined with a 100 count hold at max effort.  I did this a few years ago (16!) and liked the results.  I figure its a good bastard combination of weights and endurance.  Had me sweating pretty quick.  This is a routine where I have to start out as light as the weights can be due to the high volume.  Took me about an hour to complete, rests between exercises started approaching 5 minutes.  The current plan is to build up the endurance to where I can do this 3 times and then up the weight.  The gym is oriented towards cardio and has a pathetic weight section, so I'll have to milk it for all its worth.  Besides, I tend to gravitate towards high volume, it seems easier to me and I'm lazy by nature:)

**Did the "Narrow Grip Incline Bench Presses" on a Smith Machine.  Didn't have a choice in this gym, but at this point in the workout it was probably best.

Thought provoking exercise:

Obax:  It satisfies much of the same need.  The goal is to smite the demons that plague my existence.  They don't like pain, so I pummel them with it.  Or something like that.

Agreed. If it's worth doing, it's worth doing wrong. :)

Indeed.

'Tis an impressive list. Way to go! Does it feel good to get back to this kind of thing, or are you missing the crazy ultra running?

Actually, the crazies are leaving me alone for now.  This is a purposeful redirection of effort for the rest of the year.  The Ultra thing was cool, but that was more of an "achievement" than a life-style choice.  At least for the time being.  I do like the trails, but to be able to do it and not be wiped out takes way too much time and is way too narrow of focus for me.

I got tired of being asked repeatedly if some of my managerial decisions were 'right' at one job, that I made a a little sign:

There's a right way and a wrong way. We're doing it the wrong way.

The higher ups made me remove it from my desk. Killjoys.

I'm with you, brother.  I've always been an uncomfortable fit for the powers that be.  How I managed to get promoted into the senior ranks is something of a mystery to me.  I think enough of the decision makers along the way got a kick out of watching me run amok and draw fire that they decided to keep me around for the duration.  Let's face it, the daily grind is BORING, so maybe they find the voice of Chaos refreshing...

Notes:

Ok, felt weak like a kitten through most of this, but it sure worked out the DOMs from yesterday:)  Curious to see how long I can keep this up.  I'm treating it like hay season; it doesn't matter how many bales you did yesterday, you still have all of today's bales in front of you, and it looks like it might rain...  All of which means I'm curious to see how long I can do this every day.  And yes, I really do spend quality time thinking of new ways to be even stupider than before:)  75 min.

You performing this work as a circuit or going from one exercise to the next?  Any rest?

Too bad there is no insanity badge, you would certainly win it. :)

I'm sure something could be arranged... :)

I rest as needed.  This one took me 75 minutes excluding the mobility and stretching.  I do each exercise's ladder, so its not a circuit, and then rest if needed before hitting the next exercise.  Sometimes I have to pause during a ladder around 5 or 6, but I try to make it as short as possible.  I'm curious to see how the fatigue builds up with each day.  Remember, its all about testing to destruction...
