leighanne1941: Get leaner, get stronger, go longer!

Recommended Posts

1. Strength - It's all about the pushing and pulling.

I bought a pull up bar on Monday and got started right away on the journey to pullups!  I'm going to follow a "grease the groove" (aka GTG) method.  4 times a day M-F at the bar.  Saturday test and Sunday rest.  I don't expect to hit a pull up in 6 weeks but you never know :) Grading, however will be based on compliance with the program.

Also gonna use GTG for my pushups.  On January 1st, I could just barely eke out 3 pushups.  Last Saturday I did 20.  Aiming to hit 30 this challenge.  3 sets of pushups per day spaced 3-4 hours apart M-F.  Saturday test, Sunday rest.  Grading will also be based on compliance with the program.

A= 28-30 weekdays of working  B=24-27 days  C=21-23 days   D=18-20 days  F=<18 days

2. Cardio - It's all about the running.

My half marathon training starts on June 18th.  Gonna be doing 3 days a week to protect my foot.  The goal is simple.  Do the runs.  Run for joy (thanks Cline!).  I won't be wearing my watch on weekday runs.  For long runs, the watch will be along to time my walk breaks (we do 10 min run/1 min walk on long runs).  Last night at work, I found myself looking at the pacing for different finish times and thinking I should train by pace.  NO!  My true goal for this race is to make it to the start line.  That won't get done worrying about pacing or keeping up with anyone.  So I'm running for joy and listening to my body.

A=17/18 runs  B=13-15 runs  C=11/12 runs  F=<10 runs

This grading system becomes null and void if my injury flares and I need to take time to recover.  Then yoga will sub in for running.

3. Food - It's all about experimentation.

Over the last two challenges I came to realize that when it comes to food, restriction based goals do me in.  They activate my inner child who demands to eat everything she is not "allowed" to.  So this challenge, I'm mixing things up.

a. Cook 3 fully paleo dinners per week for the family.  1 of these has to be something new or a paleo'd version of a favorite.

b. Pack 1 paleo lunch for my oldest daughter.  I'm not trying to go whole house Paleo but something tells me that a lunch of sugary

jam in between two slices of processed bread is not fueling her brain in the best way :/

c. Look down......way down :)  My diet downfall is absolutely the in betweens.  My meals are pretty good.  It's grabbing a chocolate bar

at the gas station, a donut on the way home from work or a bag of chips while getting groceries that gets me.  Cause once I fall into

that habit, I easily do it multiple times daily.  I don't have a hard and fast goal on how long I want to go but I want to keep this streak

in my mind throughout the challenge and use it as a tool to help me really consider before I mindlessly shove food into my mouth.

I have no %Paleo goals, I haven't been tracking calories/carbs/etc.  These goals are a part of my bigger goal of making us a healthy family.  If I'm at girls night and someone brings homemade brownies, I'm eating one.  If we have a chance for date night, I'm ordering what I want.  Tomorrow we have plans to take the girls for ice cream and I will be getting some :)

4. Life - It's all about transparency

A large part of my food issues have to do with attitude.  Guilt about eating something "bad" causes shame which makes me eat more.  And worse hide it.  Eating in secret is a big part of my binging behavior.  So I'm going to work at letting go of the shame associated with eating.

I'm going to report here everyday on my food and workout for the day.  I know by now that you guys won't judge me and so this place feels safe for me.  I'm also going to remove any judgement about what I eat.  Just a straight reporting of the facts!

A= 40-42 days  B= 35-39 days  C=30-34 days  D-25-29 days  F = <18 days

THIS!  fills me w joy!!!!!

LOOK AT YOU!!!! GREAT GOALS!  GTG is an awesome way to progress!  That's how we all did it (everyone else lies!).

Running for joy is good for soul, body, and overall run time (you'll be really surprised what it will do when you run for joy and then focus a run).

Your diet goals are fantastic!!!

You've learned so much about setting goals and doing good by yourself.

WOW!!!

Your life goal is awesome too!  I am a long-time secret eater too, and reported out what I ate for 30 days earlier this year--totally rewired not just how I eat, but how I think about eating and my relationship with food.

Good luck!

::blushes::  Thanks!  I took a lot of time figuring out my food goals.  I really want this time to be forever and not just a quick fix.  And I'm really amazed at how running without a watch has really made my runs more enjoyable already.

Oh gosh, the secret eating. Good on you for facing it! Looks like a great challenge. :)

I think more people struggle with this than we could ever guess!

I made it through the day without grabbing a treat!  I'm pretty pleased with this since I spent the morning running errands and it took several hours longer than I expected. I grabbed some cashews to munch on and was completely satisfied.  Didn't even contemplate a donut when the husband asked me to bring him one home.

We had poutine and ice cream with the girls tonight and it was sooooo good :)  Knowing that was coming up definitely made it easier to avoid the rest during the day.

And in big exciting news for us:  We booked a vacation to San Francisco for October!!  We haven't been on a vacation in 6 years.  Our marriage can definitely use it :)  And I have one more piece of motivation.  I would love to hit goal by the trip :)

I love that you're running for joy! I try to do that whenever it gets stale. Taking new routes, doing "destination" runs where I'll go to a different part of the city. It keeps it FUN!

When it comes to the "inbetweens" I totally know what you mean. I just decided after a while that I'd never grab food "on the go," especially since i'm always On the go in NYC lmao.

Not worrying about time has really brought me back to all the things I love about running in the first place.  Until I fell more confident that I can stay injury free, I have no business pushing my pace :)

Re food:  AT my worst I was creating reasons to be "on the go".  Reminds me the commercial where the husband pours out all the milk so he can run to the store.  Any reason to stop in somewhere and grab something "since I'm here anyway".  Or getting the kids to ask for muffins/donuts!!  Dude, I was encouraging poor eating in my children to satisfy my urges :(  Not good!

Not surprisingly, 5 days into NOT doing it and it's already much easier.  It seems like the first couple of days are always the hardest!

Awesome run!  7km on a beautiful day.  Felt great, pushed a little harder than I normally do on a LSD but not so hard I was dying for the walk breaks.  AVG pace: 7:31/km.  10 sec per km faster than the last time :)

Great job on the run!!

I like your goals btw. Secret eating!!!! I feel you. It is so tempting to stop for food on my way home because no one will know, but I will know and my body will have consumed the calories.

Thanks! Secret eating is soooo tough.  Cause how do you get accountability from someone else when someone else not knowing is a large part of the issue.

Today was rough.  I had to stop at the grocery store on the way home and I was tired and hungry.  I so wanted to grab some candy.  But I didn't  WIN

Yeah I know all about "inventing" reasons. On my food bender I'd be like... "Well I'll go for a long walk and come back the long way... and get a chai latte. Oh whoops... forgot to tell them skim. OH WELL." So bad. It's easier said than done to confront all that behavior but I'm here to support you! We can do it together! <3

Love your goals this time around (course I liked the last challenge's goal too, maybe I'm easily please :D). Running for joy is the best way to run. It's waaaaayyyy more fun that way! Pushups are awesome and food is meant to be experiemented with. Can't wait to see you crush these goals!

Good lord.  You too?  There is someone else out there just like me with food?  This part of your post really hit home with me.  So much so, I had to immediately reply.  I can't say enough how much I'm wishing you well in this "internal fight".  I KNOW it's a big deal and very hard to do.

Years ago, I used to drive through at Burger King, then drive a block or so to McDonald's, ordering combo meal at each one, then going somewhere no one would see me so I could eat them.  Though it's been a long since then, and I've lost a lot of weight since then too, I'm still often haunted by those memories.  When I have given into just a regular little fast food meal lately (and giving it up completely is part of my challenge) I still am afraid that I'll slide back down to eating like that again.

Loving the person I've become but terrified of becoming again who I was, and battling with the self-doubt to finish the race.  It's a long fight, but one well-worth doing.

Good luck!

Definitely easier said than done!  And I am certain that the beast will not be slain in one 6 week period.  But I'm aiming to do some mortal damage and will absolutely engage your help to do it :)

Easy to please is good :)  Your 100 pushups goal is planting seeds in my brain LOL  The day I do 100 in a day I'll be in here shouting it from the rooftops.  100 in one set will one day happen as well!

Re: the pullups.  Are you using a band or a chair or anything for supported pullups for the GTG pullups?

Running for joy and being transparent.  Do it!

I wasn't aware you could use a band for assisted pullups.  Jeremy and I had some fun imagining scenarios where I called him into the bedroom to find me dangling through the ceiling :)  Then I googled and was all about it.  Right now I'm doing jumping negatives.  They have gotten much more controlled over the last week but I'd like ti get them longer.  So I'm going to continue them this week and buy some bands on the weekend.

Update 1.1

Strength: 5 sets of 5 jumping negative pullups

               3 sets of pushups (12, 10, 10)

              Plank: 1:45 (that's a PR baby!!)

Cardio: rest day

Food: Sausage and Roasted Broccoli for dinner.  This is a regular for us but I usually serve a starch with it.  Left it out and noone complained.  WIN! 1/3

Also, doing good resisting the random treats.  It was tempting at the pharmacy today but walked out empty handed.

Transparent:

Breakfast: Bacon and eggs

Snack: Primal Fudge

Lunch: Chocochili with cheese

Snack: Apple with almond butter and primal fudge

Dinner: Sausage and broccoli

I know what you are going to say Cline :P  I was craving chocolate last night and making the fudge was a better option than going to the store for chocolate.  But there is no risk of it being a staple in the fridge!

There was definitely some moments of debate with myself about putting the second serving in the report.  So I'm happy I did :)

We just finished watching this weekends Game of Thrones episode.  I think they did a great job with the red wedding.  I find myself eagerly watching to see how they handle different storylines in the show vs the book (I'm currently reading book 5).  Anyone else reading/watching?

And now I'm off to write in the girls' journals.  Trying to keep up with those on a regular basis still.  I did take starting photos this morning but I will have to upload those tomorrow.

Jumping negatives are great!

Re: the bands. Unless you can/will use them for other exercises, you can easily use a chair. Just put a foot on it & do the pull-ups. Obviously, you are just trying to take some (not all) of the weight off the pull up. The further away you out the chair, the less support the chair gives you.
