I like your Bible memory challenge! I memorized a lot of Bible when I was a teen (I mean, like chapters and books), and I'm currently in the process of reviewing/re-memorizing as well as adding new verses. I gave up on 3x5 cards, though, and use my iPod. I copy verses into the Errands app (it's a to-do list app, free, and really the best to-do list ever), and then I set them to repeat on varying frequencies, depending on how well I know them and mark them as done when review or work on them. This way cards never get lost, bent, or wet or anything else.

Something else I like to do with chapters or large portions is listen to them. I downloaded the whole Bible on mp3 and load portions onto my iPod to listen to whenever I have a few quiet minutes (not often with 3 kids in the house all the time, but I manage now and then). You might see if you could get that portion, either recorded by someone else, or just record it yourself and listen to it every day, in addition to working on the verses. It will almost certainly help you reach your goal faster!

Good luck!

Thanks for the encouragement. I may switch to digital memorization, but I am somewhat hung up on physical reading materials. My brain seems to run better when consuming words off of paper. Listening to the verses is something I hadn't considered. I'll have to look into that.

Two weeks later ...

I went on a family vacation last week and I didn't keep up with my work outs. Or my updates. At any rate, here's my update.

  1. Perform 12 pullups in a row. (STR 4)

    1. Did a set of 5 and of 4.1 today.
    2. I seem to be lagging here. I am thinking it's a lack of sleep. I also haven't been eating to my primal/paleo standards.
  2. Continue workout routine: (STA 3)

    1. Logged today's workout in spreadsheet
    2. I hurt my right knee while on vacation. Leg workout put on hold until it gets better. Will see ortho again in 3.5 weeks.
  3. Memorize 1 Peter 2:15 - 3 (WIS 3)

    1. Memorized 3:1,2 yesterday
  4. Finish writing "memoir" of my dating/engagement/marriage to my wife (CHA 2)

    1. No update; 4 left
  5. Complete Project 2 in Competent Communicator booklet for Toastmasters (CHA 3)

    1. COMPLETED: Gave speech on 6/24 about taking breaks. Well received. Giving myself a D on this one. Wrote it the day before and didn't practice at all. I think I'll have another opportunity in August.

I am going to grade myself today. I have a road trip this weekend and I won't be making any more progress. This has been a great experience. I'm looking for to the next go round. I will probably focus on diet, sleep and what exercise I can do with me knee still hurting. I will also keep it to 3 or 4 goals.

  1. Perform 12 pullups in a row. (STR 4)

    1. This should probably be an incomplete because of my knee. Giving myself an F, no points awarded.
  2. Continue workout routine: (STA 3)

    1. Only missed two workouts, giving myself an A, 3 points awarded.
  3. Memorize 1 Peter 2:15 - 3 (WIS 3)

    1. Memorized through 3:16. Missing 6 verses, giving myself a C, 1.5 points awarded.
  4. Finish writing "memoir" of my dating/engagement/marriage to my wife (CHA 2)

    1. 4 left - which means I get an F. But I did actually add 1, so I'll move myself to a D, .5 points awarded.
  5. Complete Project 2 in Competent Communicator booklet for Toastmasters (CHA 3)

    1. Finished the day of and didn't rehearse, but I still did it. Giving myself a D, .75 points awarded.
