EricasLens: New to Nerd Fitness and these challenges

EricasLens

Recommended Posts

I'm mostly a Scout, but a little bit of a Druid. I guess I'd ultimately like to be a Ranger?

Okay I'm new to these challenges and completely new to the Nerd Fitness community. I feel totally out of place, but I don't want to. I don't like being the new girl, but am definitely out of my element here. What are these attribute things? Is this like roll playing game lingo? I've never done any of that. I don't even play video games. I've been reading Nerd Fitness for a couple of years, but now I think maybe I'm not nerdy enough?

Anyway, I'm up for a new challenge and hoping I can get into this and feel less out-of-place eventually. Here are my SMART goals:

1. Stick with my Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon Relay training plan.

I'm doing the Virginia Beach Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon Relay with a friend who is new to running. I've done 6 half marathons and LOVE the R'n'R, but the last couple of years have been soooo hot it has hurt my race time. The relay is shorter (7.9 miles for me, 5.2 miles for her), so I'm hoping I can run it real fast before the heat gets to me. My training plan each week is: 2 easy runs, one speed/tempo run, and one long run. I've just begun training, but was slacking on running before that and I don't want to be a slacker for this.

2. Lose 6 pounds.

I think I can lose more than that during this 6 week challenge, but I've said that before and it hasn't happened yet. My current weight is 170. My ultimate goal weight is 130. I'm getting married in October and ordered a dress that's just slightly too small, so I have to lose no less than 10 pounds, but preferably more than that. I'm mostly a vegetarian, but technically a pescatarian, and would like to move to 80% vegan to help me lose weight since cheese is my weakness. I'm also on MyFitnessPal (Erica262) to track calories and need to stick with that. I do well during the week, but cave on the weekends in social situations. (Beer is my other weakness.)

3. Get into a strength training groove.

I have an excellent arm workout that I'd like to do every other morning, but sleep tends to win over getting up early for a workout. Even though it only takes 20 minutes. I'd also like to do a weight circuit at the gym twice a week. By the end of the six weeks, I want to be able to do more than one non-girly push up.

4. Relax!!!

I tend to let life get overwhelming and I just keep going and going and going until finally I get sick and am forced to stop. I've been sick more this year than in the last 2-3 years combined and I know it's because I'm overdoing it and I'm super stressed out. I want to carve out 15 minutes each day to just relax - do yoga, meditate, or just cuddle on the couch with the dog. Whatever I have to do (work two jobs, chores, running, etc) can wait 15 minutes while I get my S#*& together.

Oh I should introduce myself. My name is Erica. I live in Norfolk, Virginia with my fiance (an English professor) and my lab/pit mix, Raven. I'll turn 29 during this challenge. I'm a graphic designer/photographer and I work in marketing for a university. I sometimes do a little freelancing. I picked up a second job at a wine/beer store to make extra money for the wedding. I'm getting married in October and what little free time I have tends to go into planning that. I was pretty much completely sedentary for most of my life because I don't like competitive sports. A year after college, I discovered I was 193 pounds. I didn't care for that, so I became a vegetarian, cleaned up my diet, joined a gym, and did the Couch to 5k. I lost a little more than 50 pounds. I maintained that loss for a little more than a year. I've done 6 half marathons, 1 full marathon, and a dozen other races. When my fiance and I started dating (long distance), taking care of myself became less of a priority because we were trying to move. I changed jobs and moved across the state and it was all very stressful. And now I'm working two jobs, which stressful. So over the last couple of years, I regained about 30 pounds. And now I'm here.

Is this good? Off to a good start? Can someone teach me how to be a better nerd? I want to win this challenge thingy.

Congrats on your upcoming wedding!

Don't worry about being not nerdy enough. I don't do the real-life role playing with attribute points at all, because I don't think it helps me personally. If you enjoy the site though and like the community, it doesn't matter if you don't participate in the threads about D&D and video games and such.

I agonized a bit too over what class I was supposed to fit into. I wanted to do some running and biking, so that was scout-ish, but I also wanted to do some bodyweight strength training, so I wasn't sure if that made me a Ranger, but then I knew that I wasn't very into CrossFit, so I got frustrated. Ultimately I looked at other user's challenges and decided the scouts were more like me in goals, so I came here. Just remember that if you ever feel that you don't fit here in future challenges, there's no rule against changing!

Good luck! I'm on MFP as twothirdsbeth, though I'm really inconsistent about tracking anything, but you can add me if you want!

Thanks, Grizzy! It's good to hear I'm not too out-of-place since I don't do D&D type things. Running is my favorite, so I think I'll stick with the Scouts for now, but I might browse the other forums just to see what everyone else is up to :) Thanks again! And good luck to you too!

Oh I found the Attributes info! So this is what I think I am:

  • Strength (STR) - 1
  • Dexterity (DEX) - 2
  • Stamina (STA) - 4
  • Constitution (CON) - 2
  • Wisdom (WIS) - 5
  • Charisma (CHA) - 2

And to earn more points...

Goal 1 will earn 3 STA points and 2 DEX points

Goal 2 will earn 5 STR points

Goal 3 will earn 2 CON points and 1 CHA point

Goal 4 will earn 1 WIS point and 1 CON point

Does this sound good so far?

And I'll go with the grading scale: A - 100% B - 75% C - 50% D - 25% F - 0%

Thanks, Hammlin! After browsing around, I think I'll stick with the Scouts :) I do have a couple questions since I'm totally new here. What's with the "race" thing? Elves and whatnot? Can I just be human or is that lame? And how do I change my picture and signature? My picture just sort of appeared and I'm not sure why... Weird.

Welcome Erica and don't worry it's not as crazy as it seems!!

First good luck with your goals and congrats on your upcoming wedding! Also happy early birthday!!!

As far as the races it goes along with the roleplaying thing, as games normally have different races(elves, hobbits, dwarves, humans etc). You can definitely be a human though and it's not too lame! We just pick whatever race we feel best defines us! ^_^

Good luck again on your challenge can't wait to see how it plays out!

Hey Erica!

Great job, and welcome to the site!  It's great to have you here.  I myself am very new to the site and the community, so it's great to get to know people on here that are new with me!

Congrats on the upcoming wedding, and I see you're from Norfolk!  GREETINGS FROM YORKTOWN!!!!  I teach at Grafton High School here in the 23692!!!!  Might have to get up for a run or something!

In any case, it's no problem that you're learning to be a nerd.  You've come to the right place!  The most important thing is that you don't let anything stop you from achieving those great goals.  We're here to help.  I myself am so jazzed that I'll be able to lean on the great people on this site.  Everyone just wants the best for you, as you want the best for everyone else.  You wouldn't be here otherwise.  WElcome, and LET'S GET IT DONE!!!

Hello!

I'm a graphic designer too and also have stress problems! Maybe it's the profession? A lot of the pressure to make my work look good gets to me, I think.

I think your goals are fantastic and I'm super impressed with all your marathoning skills.

Thanks Anwyl! I think I'll stick with human since I'm totally new to all of this and don't really understand it all yet :) I'm excited though! So far this is really fun and the Nerd community is great!

Hey, shaffnut! That's awesome! I work at ODU :) Do you ever do any of the local races? I've done several of the J&A races and I've done the R'n'R a few times :)

Hi ProPlayer_Lux! Yay graphic design! I think it might be stress from the profession too. So many deadlines! So many edits! I love what I do, but I need a break sometimes ;)

Whew, you all are making me feel so much better about this! I thought I signed up before realizing what I was getting myself into ;)

Love your goals! You can do this! You are going to rock this thread!

Oh, and the secret to eating less cheese? Stop buying it! LOL! (I still get some some, but when I run out, I don't run out and buy more right away. That, and I plan it into only certain meals, like sandwiches. Anyway...)

Good luck!

Hello! Welcome to the Scouts!

I have been around for a few challenges, but I have only been on for about a year. I know how it can be kind of nerve-wracking joining the site, but I think you will find it's worth it! I have switched classes before two, and it's really not that bad. I initially joined as an Adventurer, and after achieving some success there, I moved to the Scouts. I LOVE IT HERE. All of the rebels here are really supportive of each other, and I think you will find that you don't have to go very far to feel welcome or encouraged.

Also, I am not sure if you have read this article yet: Real Life Role Playing. It should answer some of your questions in a little more detail.

The best advice I can give is this: COME BY OFTEN. The best thing you can do is update your thread often and converse with the other rebels. It makes you feel so much more powerful and motivated.

Well, I wish you the best of luck!

Those are great goals, Erica! I'm definitely not a designer, but I am a front-end coder, so I hear you on the tight deadlines, in front of a computer, hard focus (BUT FUN) work stuff. :)

Depending on how often you cook at home, you might want to check out the Appetite for Reduction cookbook. Really amazing vegetarian food, most of it pretty quick to prepare.

Welcome to the Scouts Erica!, I understand your stress at work, deign is just like that, since there is no right or wrong (at least until the client decides it's WRONG!), you are often left with the feeling you could improve it further, but it is what it is and we can work from there! (I am an Architect, FWIW).

Best of luck with your goals!

Thanks for checking in!

It's going. I'm sort of doing the bare minimum training right now. It's been a busy week with both jobs and wedding planning, and will be a busy weekend of wedding planning, though I'll still get all my runs done. Next week will be better on the fitness-front.. More confidence, more determination, more time haha. Right now I'm just trying to keep my head above water.

Changing the grains I ate was the biggest thing for weight loss. More sweet potatoes less pasta, it's a micro versus macro nutrient thing. I actually added meat back into my diet after reading Paleo for Athletes. It explained the differences in proteins and why my legs weren't recovering well from long runs. But if you're eating fish, that's the best source for what you need.

We are all different kinds of nerds here. I don't play many RPGs so when it came to picking race I went with the best race that described me from my favorite nerdy book, LOTR.

My progress report:

My Goals:

This week didn't go very well. The only run I did was a 2-miler on Saturday.

On the Monday the challenge began, I weighed 170.4. Today I weigh 169.4. So far so good! I didn't even know I was succeeding at this, so that's nice.

This week didn't go well. I did zero strength workouts.

This week didn't go well. I was completely overwhelmed with job #1, job #2, wedding planning, apartment cleaning, and my mom visiting. I had a lot of fun with my mom in town, but it was still busy and very little relaxing was done.

Going forward: So far this week is going pretty well. I ran this morning knowing I'd be working both jobs today and wouldn't have time otherwise. I'm going out of town this weekend and will be gone for 4 days. I'll keep up with my running, but the other goals may be more challenging.

Sometimes life just gets in the way.

That being said it seems like an extra reason to work on your relax goal. Maybe only take 5 minutes if thats all you can find time for, but relax a little especially when its busy.

Erica, my wedding was low-key and supposedly relaxed and I was *still* a stressball for months leading up to it.  Sending as much mental support as I can from here! If you have trouble turning off your brain, what about some mindless relaxation? In times of extreme stress I find myself grabbing a mug of tea and playing (no laughing) Spider Solitaire. Or any computer-based solo card game.
