Muryanp: Chapter I

Recommended Posts

After a great first 6wc there is no way I would miss subscribing to this second!

So let's have it:

I'm still a 23 y/o brazilian guy, almost graduating in college (the semester ends this September, when I graduate).

6'1" (1,85m)

248.7 lb (112,8kg) at the end of last challenge, but I'll update it monday.

My first challenge was really awesome, so I'll follow its guidelines to design this second

Goals:

1) Drop at least 8.8 lb (4 kg)

Last challenge I pickd up losing 7.7lb, and I achievd it around my 4th week. I think after that I kinda dropped back. I could have pushd myself a little more at the 2 last weeks, and it displeased me.

I'll achieve it by working out 3x a week (which will be one of my goals) and by trying to it better (and this lead me to my next goal).

CON 2

STR 1

2) Cut out the (edible) sweet stuff completly (Jelly and Ice cream excepted, with moderation)

Sweet treats - chocolate, cookies, pastry, and so on - are really my Achilles heel. As soda was too.

And being away from soda did me great, so I'm hoping doing the same with the sweets will also help me a lot.

But I do know it will be really hard. Ice cream I can have w moderation: 1x/week.

CON 2

WIS 2

3) Work out my BBW routines 3x a week

I won't assign specific days, because life happens, and whenever a holiday messes with the week's schedule, it will be ok just to work out 2x.

But on the regular week I must not miss working out 3x. I'm choosing this one because of last weeks 5 and 6. It was when I almost lost it, so I really need to be carefull about it, this time.

STR 3

STA 2

4) Studying 2 straight hours 4x a week

I'm a great reader, I've been a bookworm since I learnd to read.

My problem is keeping regular in the study hours. Some days I study 5 straigh hours just because I was to lazy to study the last one.

My goal here is to build some regularity habits for myself, and i think it'll really asses me in all other matters.

Here, as well, holiday weeks are excused to have study sessions only 3x.

WIS 3

For all goals:

A: 100%

B: 85%
C: 70%

D: 55%

E: 50%
F: 49.9%

For a possible total of:

WIS +5

Hey there! These goals kinda rock, and I still think that pick intricated goals that can influence themselves is super smart!

And I totally can rely on the study procrastination thing. So I will follow your progression in that particular goal with some attention :D

See you on monday!

I'll share some of the things that have been really helpfull with studying:

I just started using pomodoro technique (or ate least my adaptation of it) and Focus Booster app.

And I bought this little guy from a friend, it's heaven wearing it to study.

04102010173308.jpg

For those who do not know the Pomodoro and dont want to bother going to the site a brief generals:

A method for time managing. I dunno other uses of it (there probably are) but it's really helpfull with studying. It works in turns (sessions of 25 minutes) with intervals (5 minutes for you to read wmails, check the twitter, etc).

During the 25 minutes you must be fully compromised and concentrated in your task, not interrumpting it by no means. After 4 sessions you take a longer break (30 minutes) in which you can stretch, eat, check NF's forums and articles, etc.

My version of it:

1 - I set everything I need to study.

2 - Lock myself in my bedroom (now very neat and organized).

3 - Put on my noise reduction headphone (which really aids #5).

4 - Position a piece of blank paper and a pen at my right - to take note of anything that appears in my mind not related to the subject I'm studying, to deal with it latter.

5 - Start the first 25 min session and don't stop it even for knocs in the door or screams of "THE BUILDING IS ON FIRE". All of those can be handled in the 5 min break between each 25 min sessions (this one i found to be a really good one, because it helps keeping a flow of thoughts, increasing my concentration and learnage).

Wow this looks like something efficient! When I study I do pretty much this way: I hide my computer way out of sight, take all the courses I will need, and set up my phone alarm for one hour, and then I do a 5-minutes break, and then one hour etc.

I like the idea of putting a blanck paper to note down all stuffs non study-related for later. This is smart. Maybe the shorter sessions are more efficient too. I should really try it!

Day #1

Not the best start ever.

Spent the hole day at the university and got stuck in traffic when coming back home.

As a result I got home to late to go to gym, meaning I'll have to do Tue, Thu and Sat.

In despite of being at the University, I couldnt study for 2 straight hours and that means I have no choice but to do that from today to friday.

The bright side of it is that I had a really balanced day, regarding meals. And also no sweet treats.

I have tons to do, maybe I'll have to replan some aspects of my routine. I just decided to start my paper over and make what I have already done into an article.

I'll maybe need to learn Italian real quick. As I might have said, I'm hoping to go to London after my md next year.

And as my grandfathers were italian I may be ellegible for italian citizenship, what would make my journey 3x easier.

I've being urging to get back at studying guitar.

So, tons of stuff happening. But I do think I need to focus not to get lost. Let's see how it rolls.

I have a lot to get done by the end of the day, let's see if I'll manage it.

At night I'll be back and check mark what I accomplished.

Tasks:

Pick up my suit.

Hit the drugstore.

Buy and install a new shower.

Study logic for 2h.

Study analytical sociololgy for 2h.

Practice 30 minutes on my guitar.

Hit the gym.

You did great considering your obligations! And no sweets with all that stress is iron will. I think that's a good start.

Your tasks list, it's for one day? If you can do all of that you're my hero :D

And you remind me I should get back to Italian. I used to speak it almost fluently 5 years ago, and I stopped practising. For a latin langage speaker like you it's should be quite easy to learn!

And what's urging you to play guitar?

Good luck and may the Force be with you!

Heya, Muryanp. Fellow Ravenclaw here. I like your studying strategy; I think I'll borrow some of your ideas and apply it to my own studying habits.

A rocky start is alright; you're a busy person from what I can tell. I'm sure you'll rock this challenge. :)

Meanwhile, in the land of productivity:

Nice. It's so true that electronics/etc kill your productivity! I keep my cell in a drawer at work.  I was cracking up at breakfast the other day there were four of us there and three had their cell phones on the table just in case the whole time. I like all this stuff but I think it's very helpful to limit it.

Hey Hey!

Hope you're having another sweet free day.  I'm nearly finished day 3 and I think the sugar from the week between challenges has just about left my body!  Thankfully!  Also, you commented on my last challenge, not the current one.  Maybe I messed up the links in my signature.  I haven't checked.  Too much going on to keep track!

Day #3

Think I finally stood up for the challenge!

Did my work out today, a light one as I'm going in tomorrow again..

Managed to study, finally installed the new shower I bought yesterday (and I'm still alive after it).

Today I studied philosophy of art and analytical sociology.

Even practiced half an our on my guitar \o/

No facebook til 6pm helped me a lot with it.

No sweet treats.

Oh! And I had an amazing night meal after i got back from the gym!

300g of broccoli sauteed in olive oil, 2 grilled steaks (yeah, I've got to cut back on the meat thing a bit but I just love it too much), a crumbs whole wheat toasted and just a little bit of grated parmesan cheese on top of it.

(Hoping I'll be able to manage the sweets) I'll start some goals related to paleo in my next challenge, I think. I'll read more abou it during this one.

Goal updates:
1) Starting weight: 113,5 (regaind about 0,7kg from last challenge's end, but that's ok - I'm getting my mojo back).
2) Sweet free
3) 1/3
4) 2/4

Days #4 and #5

I'm reaally tired, so I'll be quick.

Yesterday I did nothing but study. Oh and I also found a guitar that I love but dont have enough money to buy.

Today I worked out and studied music theory. But tomorrow I most definetely wont go to the gym, thus not completing my required 3x weekly workouts.

Not the end of the world, rough adaptation week, week #2 will be much better, I'm sure : )

I plan to study, though. So I'll have 3 outta 4 goals achieved for the week.

I'm having a really hard time in my personal life, an it reflects a lot on my concentration to the challenge..

My 3y relationship might be coming to its end, and I cant really keep anything else on my mind but it.

Cant use excuses, though. I really want to pick things up and regain my mojo at the challenge.

Goal updates:
1) 113,5 kg (250.2lb)
2) Sweet free
3) 2/3
4) 3/4

I second that; if it helps to focus on these goals, do that, if not, don't.  If you have to take a leave of absence, make sure to come back, though.

Mury, you're not doing badly at all *happy dances*

I'm sorry to hear about your relationship, maybe it just needs an injection of something? If not i'm truly sorry about that. you're still young and perhaps focusing on yourself for a while might make you stronger in the relationship department at a later stage.  Take the time you need to heal and deal with whatever you need.  We're always going to be here for you so come back when you're ready :)

Hey there. I've just been reading and enjoying your challenge thread so wanted to wish you well. The pomodorro method sounds good, definitely one for taking mini breaks after 25-40 minutes of concentration. the old mobile phone game Snakes got me through hours and hours of marking term papers... doing something else cleanses the brain!

We're sharing study goals and the BBW circuits so, I'll be checking in to see how you're doing over the next 5 weeks. Keep her lit; as they say in Ireland!

Hope everything is going well with you in the start of week 2!

Sometimes it's good to have something else to think about when you're going through hard times, but at the same time, sometimes you just have to deal with the hard times and leave everything else!

Hoping you're all fine no matter what and that you'll keep reporting in!
