sicil - lapsed Ninja with a funny belly, challenge #1

Day 15: There is a fan that goes off in my building, directly below us, around 11pm and later. It is slowly driving me INSANE. So last night I decided to move to the other room and sleep on the floor... which wasn't the smartest move ever for my neck. Started off even stiffer today, but was able to move my 'desk' to the kitchen and stood for most of the day, which did send a few odd looks my way. (Whatever, they're probably jealous of my increased calorie burnage!)

No excuses for the weary though, tonight I had a board meeting for the non-profit I'm involved with, but I packed my gear to head to the gym right afterwards. No strength training today as shoulder is still recovering, but did a long, hard run. I've never been able to throw together so many active things into one sentence... It was only 20 min but I had beer at the meeting beforehand (freebie #1) so I'm surprised I was even able to run straight. Cooled down by walking all the way up the hill instead of waiting for the bus.

Holy crap, you are fast!!! Do you sustain 8.5 mph speed for the full duration of the 25 minute run? If so, very impressive. If not, very impressive anyway. I've only made it up to 7.5 mph on a treadmill, and I can't sustain it for longer than a few minutes. I usually run 6-7 mph.

I'm interested in your meal plan. How do you like it so far? It must be kind of nice having your meals mapped out like that. You might be relieved from the anxiety of eating... whatever, and whenever. I wonder if that's one of my problems. Lots of meals, and no plan.

Hullo! You are looking at the quintessential non-runner here... I do intervals - 30 sec @ 3.5MPH, 1 min @ 8.5MPH. Currently trying to extend my sprinting duration, but it's damn hard. ;)

The meal plan was fantastic for the first two weeks because I knew exactly what to buy and how much food I needed. No more last min grocery trips or stocking up on frozen meals "just in case." Now I've gotten into routine and am beginning to tweak my meals, but still sticking to the serving sizes and weekly grocery shops. Its a great way to break ingrained habits, as long as you stick with it.

One thing at a time! Or maybe by the end of this your body will just naturally start rejecting any harmful substances! :positive:

Oh, mine totally did that! I used to smoke about half a pack a day, and then one day I just started to feel sick at very sight of them. It's a bizarre feeling, because my brain is going "Come on, let's have a smoke!" and my body is all like "Eugh. I will throw up if you try. Stop it."

And I know I'm a little behind the times, but just on the subject of equipment, I found this bra to be absolutely superb - http://www.panache-lingerie.com/US/panache-sport/collection/21541855/Sports-Bra/21540042/

I always end up sounding like an add, but because I'm plus-size it's really hard to not jiggle. The hook at the top of the shoulder blades is wonderful!

Amazing what slaves we are to our bodies. In your case, that was a good thing! :) Thanks for the bra tip, looks super supportive. Death to the jiggle!

Hey!

Had a look at your challenge so far and it sounds like you are doing really well. Especially impressed at how fast you run! At the moment the best I can do is 8.5kpm if I am sustaining it for 20 mins. Working on improving that though so hopefully following your example.

Day 16: No fan last night. THANK YOU THANK YOU THERE IS A GOD. Was able to get a good night's sleep, which was much needed for the hectic work day today. Have an RFP due in a few days, attended a networking event, and then went directly to an after-work event. Still feeling laggy without coffee, looking to incorporate it casually from time to time whenever there's an important meeting on the line. No time for a proper workout today, shoulder is still not 100%. Booked a meeting with my physio next week just in case it doesn't heal on its own. Cooked a yummy meal of stir fry and steamed tofu tonight, plenty of leftovers for tomorrow.

I hope you are on the up and up. <3

Day 18: This week has been amazingly challenging. Woke up yesterday and could not move my neck at all without excruciating pain. Physio took me in last-min and said I had sprained a joint in my neck, and proceeded to do all kinds of ouchy things to help it along. Yesterday was a write-off, stayed at home, applied hot packs, scrambled to finish a proposal. Missed my meeting at night, missed the play I had planned to see, and missed my workout. Today was slightly better - woke up still extremely sore, but quickly wore off as I walked around. Had a good breakfast and made it to work. Had coffee for the first time in a month. Didn't have much to eat at work, as really had to gear up after missing a day. Got project done, submitted... only to get an notification 30 min after the closing time that they had completely changed the requirements. (The joys of RFPs.) So that's where I am at the moment, mind says "go to the gym!" but body says "eeergh no." Boo. Might go for a walk instead.

Howdy! I only do intervals - I'm not consistently running at 8.5MPH all the time. That would be insane. I'm sure there are people out there that do so. :) What's your routine for the whole 20 min?

Total non-runner here. I used to hate cardio. I still do! But reading everyone's challenges here and all of the wonderful articles on Nerd Fitness, and realized that you don't gotta love it in order to do it.

Thanks very much! I have a followup appointment next week. Already it's about half as sore. I would be out walking more, but its Junuary here. I think I'll try for the gym tonight.

Ohhhhh that makes more sense. I'm a bit of a workout copycat and I tried to match your speed the other day on the treadmill, and only got up to 7.5 mph. You are very fast!

Aw sorry to hear about your neck! Keep recovering :)

Well I felt like my cardio fitness was so poor to start with that just running was probably a good start! So I just picked 8.5k on the treadmill and did it for as long as I could which was about 20 min! But I have been doing quite well and my friend keeps saying that interval training is the best thing, so thinking maybe I should go for it! What are the advantages of doing that over just running at one speed though? Why is it better for you?

Thanks for letting me pick your brains haha.

I started reading about HIIT and stumbled on interval training. I have a friend who's really into it, too. You can read about the techniques on numerous websites online, as well as ideas for sample workouts. The thinking is that by alternating speeds, you're getting a better workout as your body doesn't get used to the same old routine. All I know is that I'm in and out of the gym in under an hour, which I love. I've never been a fan of long, unproductive hours at the gym, so I guess that's why I do it! :)

I've been slacking in posting, Vancouver friend! But I went hiking on the Deep Cove trail you mentioned. It made me laugh because in Ontario, that trail would be hard not easy. You BC folk and your hiking fitness! *shakes fist* But honestly it was awesome, the dogs had a blast and were absolutely exhausted. Can't wait to do it again.
