JuiceeTarget
GoodDoug the Half Ogre stood before the guild leader. He was dirty from weeks in the cave and even smellier than usual. His last assignment had almost been a failure. The Ranger Guild Leader looked up at the Half Ogre, despite his initial misgivings, he liked this guy and felt he had a lot of potential. Not all of his fellow Guild Leaders in the Rangers agreed. "We don't quite know what to do with you," the Guild Leader started, "you've got potential, but we really need you performing at a higher standard." GoodDoug nodded, this was not news to him. The real test for him hadn't been finishing his last assignment, which was hard enough, but coming back for the next one. "I'm thinking boot camp for you. Back to basics of discipline and clean living. We'll put you on a running and bodyweight program along with some time studying with others." The Guild Leader then laid out a list of goals: Basic Running:9 miles per week, every week. Also, try and better my speed and stamina. So side goals for distance and time1 run at 6+ miles and 1 run at <9min/mile+1Dex +1 Sta (side goals: +1 Sta for running 6+ miles and +1 Dex for running better than 9min/mile) Eat Clean:I will eat Primal 80% of the time, side goal of >100g protein 5 days per week+2 Con (side goal +1 Con if I make my protein goal) Exercise: 2 partsBody weight exercises 6 days a week (10 push-ups, 5 pull-ups and 10 squats per day) Join a new gym+2 Con for bodyweight, +1 Con for getting a new gym and using it by the end of the challenge Disciplined life: I need to engineer solutions to make working from home work out well for me. I'm starting a new job and want to make sure that I'm doing a good job working remotely, while maintaining quality of life. Here are some things I want to do (1 week for each of these):- study new concepts for work spend a week reading my new programming book and watching NSScreencast videos - assume 1 hour each night for 5 nights - connect with people at work in a real way while I'm in the City, make plans for one get together with new coworkers - gardening at home Buy plants, plant them, put row covers up, and make sure to water them in. Then keep up with watering and maintenance or the rest of the challenge. - meditate regularly Spend 10 minutes meditating for 5 days in one week. Spend 10 minutes one day every other week. - cook good food more often Do 3 good dinners and 3 good lunches in one week - keep up with my fellow rebels on NF Probably save this for the third week, when everyone is hitting that week 3 wall. Spend half an hour commenting on everyone's threads every day for that one week. - rule the world Spend one week practicing as much of these as possible. Save this for the final week. +2 Cha and +3 Wis for this one. Background:I've done okay on previous challenges, this last one had some real ups and downs and so I want to get back to basics. Also, I'm starting a new job right in the middle of the challenge and so all of my routines that I've been relying on for working out are going to get reset. I need to use this to start thinking about what I really want to do around new routines and habits. There is a bit of a hard reset here, and I want to keep fitness as a priority, while also making my new job a priority. Juggling! Half Ogre Ranger Devourer of Pastries Link to comment
hendrixsan
Great goals! Let's quantify the disciplined life goals; add times/amounts to each, and perhaps scaling times/amounts for letter gradies. For example: meditate regularlyA - at least 5 mins dailyB - at least 1 min dailyC - skip < 5 daysD - skip < 15 daysF - skip >= 15 days ...actually, I'm going to use the above for my own meditation goal LVL1 Wood Elf Ranger | Weapons Master | Neutral GoodMale | 25 years | 5'9'' | 182 lbsSTR: 1 | DEX: 3 | STA: 2 | CON: 2 | WIS: 4 | CHA: 31st Challenge Begins 6/3/13"We brawlers are sustained by willpower! Cyberdildonics
You can't rule the world because I have dibs! Starting a new job while trying to factor in fitness/life stuff is hard. I had to take nearly four months out when I started my new job last year just to get the hang of a routine and work out how to fit everything I want to do in, while maintaining a social life, not alienating my partner, and eating well (and as we all know, the last of those is still not going so well!) Don't be disheartened, though! It gets easier! I now have time to cycle 90mins a day, gym for 50mins 3x a week, kickbox 1-3 times a week (if I want), work full time, study 8-10hrs a week, know how to eat well even though I don't actually do it yet (but will with the newly implemented assistance of my slow cooker!) and spend time with my friends/boyfriend (although most of my time spent with my friends is getting quizzed about how I manage to fit everything in ) Basically: you can do it! Eirlys
Hi Doug Great to see your next challenge! We will be doing this whole new job thang together-ish so you can count on my support! You have quite a list of things you want to achieve, but I would suggest prioritising them each week and only focusing on the ones of highest priority at any one time. For instance, getting on top of concepts for work - you may not literally need them for Day 1 (which is usually just set-up) but maybe the confidence you'll get by feeling on top of your game means that the next two weeks you focus on this. It all depends on what's important to you! I'm quite career driven, so I'd totally ignore the garden over getting off to a good start at work, but I think you have a more balanced perspective on things Equally, I'll be dropping mostly off the radar on NF for this challenge as I have so much real-world stuff to get on with, but it's such a friendly community that come next challenge, I can get involved more & no-one will (hopefully!) mind I wasn't able to comment on their threads previously every couple of days. I have ideas re ruling the world, but for obvious reasons I don't want to share these Ah okay, so I'm bluffing. But one day... JuiceeTarget
OK, here's my idea on the 4th goal, taking beta from kevralyn and having a new mini-cahllenge each week. Just to try stuff out and grease the groove, as they say. - study new concepts for work spend a week reading my new programming book and watching NSScreencast videos - assume 1 hour each night for 5 nights - connect with people at work in a real way while I'm in the City, make plans for one get together with new coworkers - gardening at home By plants, plant them, put row covers up, and make sure to water them in. Spend half an hour commenting on everyone's threads every day for that one week. - rule the world Spend one week practicing as much of these as possible. Save this for the final week. The idea is to do one of these per week. That way I can have depth and breadth without getting all caught up in too many things at once. Also, I can get an idea for which things I want to continue with later. I'll edit my initial post with these after you guys weigh in. Half Ogre Ranger Devourer of Pastries Link to comment

JuiceeTarget
Mid week checkin-Lifted and ran 2 miles on Monday. Did the pull-ups and squats, but didn't do push-ups because I did bench press instead. Did well on eating, and spent some time reading my new Objective-C book. Then my youngest got sick that night, so spent most of the night running her to the bathroom to throw up... can I count those as intervals? Running 10 yards holding 40 pounds of squirming child should count for something.Tuesday my back was sore form deadlifts the day before and I was exhausted from being up most of the night, so I took a day of from most exercise... did my pull-ups and did a few squats just to loosen up my back. Eating went well again. No studying, because I went to bed after making dinner.Today I foam rolled and lifted - more bench presses, overhead presses and seated pulls. No leg stuff today, except for some body weight squats and lots of stretching. Eating is going well again, and I hope to go running with the wife tonight and have some time to do some reading and studying. So far, things are going okay. Need to work in the push-ups, but I think the bench presses are a valid substitute for this week. This is my last week at this job, next week I am taking off and then I start my new job the following week. I'm excited! Half Ogre Ranger Devourer of Pastries Link to comment
