Turtle 21's Road to Somewhere

Recommended Posts

This will be the first time I've attempted the 6 Week Challenge.  I've wanted to in the past, but didn't feel mentally or physically prepared.  I think I'm ready now...

A little bit about my background: I was in an auto accident back in 2001 where I was rear-ended.  I sustained a minor brain injury and loads of chronic back, shoulder, and neck pain.  After years of physical therapy, chiropractic, and massage therapy, I was told by a doctor that I would probably be in pain the rest of my life and the sooner I learned to accept that fact, the better off I'd be.  I had to stop doing a lot of the activities I loved because any kind of physical exertion or exercise usually results in amplifying the pain I already deal with on a daily basis.  As a result, I either do absolutely no physical activity for fear I will hurt myself OR I try to do something I shouldn't and end up hurting myself anyway, resulting in me not doing anything until the pain goes away again...which, in some cases, could last for weeks.  And then I repeat.  I think it is time to stop making excuses and start looking for alternative methods of activity.

So, my goals for this challenge are as follows:

1 - Fitness: Workout 4 days each week for at least 30 minutes.  I plan to achieve this by doing low impact activities such as walking and yoga.  I would also like to end my workouts with 10 - 20 minutes of meditation.  Currently, I get virtually no physical activity and I have been feeling emotionally unbalanced because I haven't been properly coping with my unusual stress levels.

2 - Weight:  I would like to get below 150 pounds.  My optimal range would be 140 - 145.  After losing almost 30 pounds, I have hit a major plateau and have fluctuated between 150 - 156 for the last few years.  I hope to achieve this with a combination of Goals 1 & 3.

3 - Food:  I've recently started paying attention to how my body feels after eating and I've come to notice that the more breads and pastas I eat, the worse I feel.  So I am going to drastically reduce my gluten intake for the next 6 weeks.  I will allow myself a two servings per week limit for the occasions when I am have a major spaghetti or sub sandwich craving and I will not over do it by measuring the serving if and when I eat gluten so I don't end up feeling miserable.

4 - Personal:  I want to start learning how to speak German.  I recently bought Rosetta Stone, but have not gotten started yet because I've been dealing with a lot of stress lately and haven't found the motivation.  Next week, I will install the software and try to spend about 30 minutes a day learning.  My goal is to learn one full level by the end of the six weeks.  (Note: I'm not sure how practical this goal is, but I will be able to gauge how quickly I am able to learn once I get started.)

Turtle - I had back surgery (twice) 10+ years ago and it took me awhile to recover. Two things that I found worked very well for exercise were swimming and water aerobics. They were great because there was no impact on the body. And an added bonus was that I lost weight - yay. Currently, I am like you hovering in the 150-156 area, but in Feb/Mar gained 10 pounds due to the stress that I was under. Am back down to 158, but would like to be in that 140-145 range also. I'll follow your progress and cheer you on!

After reading Steve's post today, I have decided to omit my goal to lose some weight and replace it with meditation. My modifications are as follows:

1 - Fitness: Workout 4 days each week for at least 30 minutes. I plan to achieve this by doing low impact activities such as walking and yoga. I would also like to end my workouts with 10 - 20 minutes of meditation. Currently, I get virtually no physical activity. I have about an hour of free time once I get home from work when there is no one in the house and I usually just face plant the couch and either veg out or nap for that hour. I will use this time instead to get moving!

2 - Weight: I would like to get below 150 pounds. My optimal range would be 140 - 145. After losing almost 30 pounds, I have hit a major plateau and have fluctuated between 150 - 156 for the last few years. I hope to achieve this with a combination of Goals 1 & 3.

2 - Mind: Meditate 5 days a week for 5 - 10 minutes.

(Goals 3 & 4 will stay the same.)

I love that you switched from weight loss to meditation. Way to treat the cause and not just the symptom!

Our struggles are different, but it's so nice to see another person on here also living with chronic pain. Even when I can get motivated, etc. it feels like my body betrays me! I had to give up yoga awhile back due to vertigo (side effect of medication). I got back into using this site called yogaglo.com. It costs a little bit per month (with a free intro trial) but has a TON of classes that are GENTLE. I can also just do a 10, 15, or 20 minute class if that's all my body is up for.

Good luck this next 6 wks! I'll check back in on you!

Hey,

welcome to the druids!

Is 10 minutes long for you?

Since I need nearly 10 minutes just to get my mind quiet and calm, I can strongly recommend ten minutes because there's more time to enjoy the quietness and you will feel more of the effect. And getting up 5 or 10minutes earlier is no difference at all, right?

For your language goal: I am a German native. If you want we can chat sometimes. But don't ask me about grammea rules. ;)

Viel Erfolg

The chronic pain gets me so down sometimes. I think my biggest challenge is trying to find a balance/compromise to the things I used to do. Sometimes I feel like if I can't go all out, then why even bother? But...like the turtle...I guess slow and steady wins the race! Thank you for your support!

Actually, when I did my 10 minutes last night, it went by so fast that I went an extra 5 minutes. All was well until my cat managed to break into my bedroom to see what was going on and broke my concentration right at the very end. Haha! I find that if I do it about an hour before bedtime, it helps me sleep much better.

I haven't had the chance to start practicing my German yet, but when I get to learning, I would love to chat. Vielen Dank!! :)

Well, it's Friday!  Time for an update:

I walked on my treadmill Monday - Thursday.  I jogged couple of times for a bit because I just couldn't resist!  But only for a short amount of time and at a fairly low speed until I build up more endurance.  When I wasn't jogging, I set the incline for a little added exertion.

Mon: 30 minutes - 1.484 miles - 150 vertical feet

Tue: 30 minutes - 1.611 miles - 160 vertical feet

Wed: 30 minutes - 1.601 miles - 170 vertical feet

Thur: 30 minutes - 1.676 miles - 180 vertical feet

I meditated Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday for no less than 10 minutes.  Monday was great, but Tuesday and Thursday I had a tough time focusing and getting my mind to shut up.  I still have to get two more days in this week, but I don't think that is going to be a problem.

I am SUPER proud to announce that I have not eaten a single thing so far this week that contains gluten!  I found these fruit & nut bars that are all natural/non GMO, gluten and dairy free, low sodium, and low glycemic.  When I found them, I thought, "well these should taste like crap", but they are wonderful!  I am really excited to have discovered them for a quick snack when I start to get cravings for something bad!  Also, this morning, a guy at work offered me a donut and I didn't even hesitate to say no thanks!  That felt very empowering.  I've found that more often than not, the idea of what it will taste like is so much better in my head anyways, so why undo the progress for something that probably won't even taste as good as what I think it will.  :topsy_turvy:

I have not started learning German yet, however.  I've been in desparate need of a new laptop for years now, and I couldn't make up my mind if I wanted a Mac or a PC.  I am terrible at making decisions until I feel I have researched the hell outta something.  I finally decided on a Mac, but it won't be here until next week.  Once it arrives, I will download my Rosetta Stone software and get busy!  I have been so excited to learn German that I can hardly handle it!

I leave you with a picture of my cat, Jixxer.  (The internet loves cats, right?!)  Happy Friday and happy weekend!

Mid-week update:

So far so good!  I only missed one day of meditation last week, but I am right on track for this week.  My new computer should arrive tomorrow, so I should be able to actually start learning German by the end of the week.  Since I haven't been spending the 30 minutes learning to speak a new language, I've been trying to get some extra reading in instead...it's my way of justifying the fact that week two is half over and I haven't started Goal #4.

This is silly, but I was SO excited last night because I jogged for 6 minutes straight without stopping during my workout!  I don't know if I've ever been able to go that long.  However, I felt as though I may have been pushing it a bit too much because I had a bad muscle spasm in my back this morning, but instead of going for my pain meds, I just sorta deep breathed myself into relaxation and the pain subsided.  I'm amazed at how much better I've been feeling!

I haven't had any gluten for 10 straight days.  I am really liking the fact that I allowed myself two meals per week just in case I was feeling like I needed it.  I find that if I tell myself that I CANNOT have something, it's the first thing that I want!  Now that I have my "back-up, just in case" meals, I dont' feel that I have been missing/craving it all that much.

I feel "in the zone" now, and think that joining this challenge has been the best thing that I've done for myself in a long time!  So excited to see where my road takes me!

Update time:

Does anyone else experience extreme fatigue after eating dense bread products?  This past weekend, I decided to indulge for one of my allotted gluten meals and shortly afterwards; I became so unbelievably tired that I ended up taking a nap for several hours right in the middle of the day!  What a waste of a beautiful weekend afternoon!  Bread is so delicious to me, and yet it seems to hate me so much.  :upset:

Last night, I did a bit of strength training instead of walking on the treadmill, and it was a nice change.  My boyfriend is a great coach, and is doing a really good job of making sure I do stuff properly without injuring myself.  This morning, I feel that good, post-exercise muscle soreness in parts on my leg I didn’t know existed!  Haha!  I have decided I want to do strength training about 2 times a week now.

I haven’t been doing as good with my meditation as I thought I would.  I have yet to do it 5 days in a week.  I try to get at least 3 days, though.  I’ve just been struggling to find a way to position myself comfortably, and when I’ve tried lying down - I sometimes end up drifting off.

Last week, I finally started to learn German.  It is now one of the things that I look forward to the most each day.  I’ve made great progress so far!  (Und ich habe die schöne Zeit!)   :joyous:

Looks like you're going so well, great work!

Not sure about extreme fatigue but I think it does have a similar lesser effect on me. I eat it pretty often though.

I love seeing your meditation journey, and breathing to help your back is not silly at all, it's fantastic!

That's cool you're doing strength training, I'm trying to train twice a week also

dense bread products- YES. It took me a long time to make the connection that my exhaustion was due in part to bread and sugary stuff. It's crazy!! Great work on your challenge so far- I hear you on meditation, too, it can take awhile to be consistent- 3x/week is a huge step!

Tonight, I accomplished something that I literally never even dreamed was anything I was capable of doing!  I jogged for 20 minutes without stopping.  Now granted, it was a slow jog, but when I decided to join this 6 week challenge, I really contemplated a goal of jogging for 10 minutes without stopping, but decided against it, because I was too afraid that if I put it in writing and didn't accomplish it - I would feel like a failure...but in the back of my mind, I kept thinking it would be awesome if I could make it 10 whole minutes.  I don't even know what happened tonight - I just got in some kind of mental zone and made it 20 minutes.  All I can say is WOW!  Go me!  Haha!   :onthego:

I've been doing pretty good with my other goals.  I must admit - I was a teensy bit lenient with food this weekend.  It was my birthday, and I wanted to splurge just a bit; however - I did exercise 5 days this week instead of 4 as a compromise.

Meditation is something I am going to need to work on harder these next few weeks.  This is the one goal that has me the most stuck.

I'm still LOVING learning German, I must say.  I'm almost half-way finished with Level 1.  I could probably be further along, but decided to go back to the beginning because I want to make sure that I understand everything completely before advancing.  Trying to figure out when to use ein, eine, and einen has me so stuck.  OY!

On to week 4!!!

Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Deutschlernen!

That, and a Mac, and a cat and very exciting goals...Meditation is hard and we shouldn't give up easily but keep training the mind.

Aaand-all of a sudden it just happens, running in the zone. Awesome!

So, without further ado, honouring the current challenge, I propose to adopt you ;-)

Checking in on a rainy Thursday morning, enjoying starting the day slowly.

On chronic pain. I just had a backlash in my fatigue syndrome, a weakness I will live with for the rest of my life. But, it could be worse, I think. You probably already developed this coping mechanism, but it does work for me. I focus on the things I can do, and my achievements here, etc.

Way to go on your running/walking. It's a fab feeling being able to do something you thought you couldn't!!!

How's your meditation going?

 Well good morning to you!

I definitely have my good days and my bad days.  On my bad days, I just feel super irritable, fatigued, angry, and impatient - but the good days make up for it, I suppose.  Before exercising, my bad days truly outnumbered the good, but now – I feel like it is balancing out a bit.  I hope that with continued exercise my good days will eventually outnumber the bad.

Meditation for me is still a bugger.  If I can get comfortable, I have no problem with the mind cooperating, but I find that if I don’t concentrate hard enough; I end up drifting off (usually because getting comfortable for me means lying down).  If I try sitting upright, the pain in my back flares up and then it’s all I can do to keep from squirming around trying to readjust.  I’m a trooper though!  I will keep trying different things until I find something that really works!

Thanks for checking in!  I hope you have a great weekend! :smile-new:

I'm still LOVING learning German, I must say.  I'm almost half-way finished with Level 1.  I could probably be further along, but decided to go back to the beginning because I want to make sure that I understand everything completely before advancing.  Trying to figure out when to use ein, eine, and einen has me so stuck.  OY!

Guten Abend,

sorry I didnt check in for so long.

I can second your experiences with dense grain products. The same happens with sugar, but not as bad for me. Thats why I went raw when I moved to beeing vegan...

Did you figure out ein, eine, einen?

It is difficult to explain when you just grew up with it, but normally ein is for male words and eine for female. Einen is a case of ein like accusative. But don't worry, in the area where I live up to 50% of the people with the lower school degree never get this difference. And they werde born in Germany in 2nd or 3rd generation... So please don't make yourself crazy about grammar rules. Speaking and understanding is far mor fun. And dont be afraid of the many cases and pronouns. Manche Regeln sind sehr schwer zu verstehen... Deutsch ist toll!

Great progress so far.

Viel Erfolg und viel Vergnügen.

Fate whispers to the warrior: "You cannot withstand the storm."

 The warrior whispers back:
 "
I am the storm."

You are a trooper!

Have you ever tried a "meditation cushion" (I'm sure they have a proper name). I find them quite comfy.

This week was kinda hard for me emotionally.  I'm not even really sure why, but I've just been feeling kinda "meh".  Despite that though, I pushed through for exercise.  As much as I did not want to even think about exercise - I have made some pretty unbelievable strides with it.  I am now officially doing a mile in just a little over 13 minutes - and this evening, I jogged for 2 whole miles!  2 miles without stopping!  I still can't quite believe it.  Back when I first discovered Nerd Fitness about a year ago, I was doing two miles in NO LESS than 40 minutes and tonight, I did 2 miles in less than 27 minutes.  The last two weeks, I've been getting on the treadmill 4 to 5 times a week for no less than 30 minutes and strength training about 2 - 3 times a week.

Other stuff:

I've been eating more gluten than I would like, but because it's just so damn hard to resist - I have been very strictly counting calories instead.  I aim for no less than 1200 and no more than 1400.  Also, when I do eat it, I have been really paying attention to my body to see how I feel and have discovered there are some things that affect me totally different than others.

Meditation - I think I need to check out the "meditation cushion" that Evenewbie suggested.  I most definitely should have worked harder on this goal.  It's a lot more work than I originally thought it would be.

And last but not least - German.  LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE learning this language.  I don't think I will quite get through one full level because I am going slower to try to learn it properly instead of quickly.  And Sunmage - I think I am starting to get a grasp on the ein, eine, einen thing.   :smile-new:  I'm getting there anyway.

Auf Wiedersehen!

Servus!

That is just amazing progress. And it's interesting, how your results often improve especially when you struggle....I've experienced that myself many times, especially with the running. That is your reward for being consistent.

Meditation practice will also benefit from being consistent. Look into the cushion - or use a chair that is reasonably comfortable with a straight back. It will be hard, you're not used to it and the mind will protest. I can feel what many others have written, it does make a difference that you practice, even if you don't feel a big difference at once.

Keep up the good work!
