Team Bodyweight (aka Train Like Rock Lee)

Recommended Posts

This group is for those interested in bodyweight strength training.   Beginners especially!  And all the more love for my fellow ladies looking to get strong. (But if you've got experience, and/or are a boy and want to hang out here, by all means, come be our ring leader.)

This will be a place where we can support each other as we begin, or continue, our journeys to become stronger, more balanced adventurers.   While adding weights to typical bodyweight moves is welcome, mostly this will focus on the standard beginnings of workouts that are dumbbell and barbell free.

So if you're looking for a group to help ya get started with, or stick to the bodyweight regime, please join up and make yourselves at home!   Post with your name and a link to your challenge.

You might be asking - why Train Like Rock Lee?  (Because I am a hopeless Naruto addict, and I have always admired Rock Lee's tenacity to train)  Here's a great quote that will show you what I mean:

"Our motto on our hard days of training is 'To be stronger than yesterday'.  If I have to I’ll be stronger than a half day ago, even a minute ago!"

And this came from the ninja who had no skill or talent for typical ninjutsu.   He simply focused on training and putting in hard work and, often his methods were simple calisthenics and body weight type workouts.   Definitely seemed like the ninja to model our group after.

Awesome idea :D I'm in!

Lee has such a great work ethic, definitely one of my favourite Naruto characters.

Am I missing where this group is on the spreadsheet? Wirilome and I have been hanging out over there under Accountibilibodies after realizing that She-hulk was not the group for us (at least for this first challenge).

I went ahead and added us to the Cross-Guild sheet (hope no-one minds) - set it to green in honour of Lee's spandex, but we can change that if you like :D

Ahaaa!  Thanks Shivani!  I've never done an accountabilibuddies thing before so had/have no idea what I am doing.   Super thanks for the assist!   (And love the green spandex color association idea!)

So.   After going nutso yesterday with food.   (I need to not space eating out too far apart, and make sure I eat something that I find stomach & mouth satisfying) -- I have to really try and shrug off the yucko feeling and guilt.

Planned strength day, and on the agenda is the following:

Pushups, 3 sets

Bodyweight rows, 3 sets

Spiderman planks, 3 sets (10 each leg)

Side lying hip raises, 3 sets (10 each leg)

Plan for today is to do as many as I can for each set on the first two and jot these numbers down.   By Monday next week, my goal is to have a +1 on the pushups/rows.

I have hockey this evening, so hopefully I don't overdo any of the sets lol!

PS - Where do I find the sheet?  >.>

I just completed my first strength workout of these 6 weeks. :3

Exercises included planks, inclined push ups, hip raises, step ups, squats and dumbbell rows (using a cinderblock).

I can do 2-3 good form inverted rows, but decided to scale back and work on DB rows until I can bust out closer to 6-8.

Aha!  Now I see us.   I had to scroll to the right > > > > Woot.   :)

Just came in from my lunchtime, pseudo playground workout.  (Pseudo because it is not my regular playground, so I only used it to find a bar to do my rows on.)    Since I wanted to see a decent starting point on things, I really tired to eek out every last little one on the pushups.

Breakdown was:

Pushups - 3x20

Spiderman Planks - 3x10 (each leg)

Side Lying Hip Raises - 3x15

Bodyweight Rows -2x10, 1x14

Stepups, slowed - 10 (each leg)

Calf raises - 15

Thoughts - My pushups are always done with a wide hand stance because that's the way that causes the least pain in my shoulder.   I don't know if this is an allowable stance, or if it is making things so easy I don't gain any benefit from them?     The body rows were done on a bar that is about 7-8" higher up than my usual bar, so I was able to crank out a lot more than usual  I am hopeful that it will still help the overall progress. :P

By next week's first strength session, I am aiming for 21 pushups per set!

I did 2 circuits of the Beginning Body Weight Workout yesterday. Planning on doing it again tomorrow.

That's awesome that you are getting stronger. I don't think you necessarily need to feel sore the next day to know that it's working.

I took the Angry Birds approach, though I admit I'm low level, so: incline pushups, bodyweight squats, one-arm rows, and planks are my 3x/week workout. I've also got Molding Mobility and Starting Stretching; I initially put these as also 3x/week, on the same days as Angry Birds (MM warmup and SS cooldown), though given how I'm STILL a bit achy after doing my circuits yesterday, I'm pushing that to 5x/week or more if I can help it.

Also, everyone, be sure your elbows are moving back, not out when doing your pushups, or you risk injuring your shoulders!

Oh man!  I needed that video something fierce.    Thanks!    My hands are always spread wide when I do pushups, because if I try to do them closer together it really hurts my left shoulder. :(     I'll try it again today when I do my workout.... if I can get it right with no pain -- then omg, lol, I need to start over with my pushup progress.

Now I really feel like I should get over the bashfuls and post up some video of me doing them so people can help fix.

Today is a strength day, but if it's nice out, I may try to get my run in at lunch and the strength after work.   Hate to pass up a sunny day at the office and not be outside for it.

How's things going so far?

I got my 2nd session in yesterday:

  • PB Pushups - working on correcting form, 3x7
  • PB Situps - 3x10
  • PB Rows - 3x10  (taller bar again, pretty easy)
  • Hangstands 3, one with pike
  • Handstands 3
  • Flex Arm hang + negatives, 3

Worked a lot on fixing my form on my pushups and think I did a bit.    Ya all wanna see a before/after video of how they look?   See if there were some positive tweaks in the form?

Tomorrow is strength day at my boxing gym, so looks like this week I'll get all 3 in.  Woot.

6x6 Inverted Pull-ups

6x6 Push-ups (I'm just at the standard right now)

6x6 Half Pistol Squats

6x6 Hanging Leg Raises

1 min Incline Plank

Has anyone ever heard of the bodyweight 666 program? I've been doing it for a couple of weeks now and I love it.
