Cycle 4: Live Free or Darkfoxx

I did post something last weekend - http://gastography.com/2013/06/10/slow-roasted-pork-carolina-style-paleo/

I'm not sure if the pic is closer to whatever I want my 'voice' to be, but the dish was definitely tasty.

Oh, I didn't realize! Or I wouldn't have scolded ;)

The shadow play in the photo is really neat - it's one of those things though, that I would have no idea what it was out of context. But maybe that isn't an issue, I mean, it's for your blog, so it is in context.

Also, that recipe looks awesome, I am going to have to try it!

@Fonzico: No, you were right to scold - I took this a few days before this challenge cycle started. :)

This goal is giving me directional issues. Whomever brought up that it was a little loose on interpretation was right - this isn't a terribly SMART goal.

I guess to quantify relative better-ness, I should first examine what I like elsewhere and what I am already doing.

Here are some examples of food photography I like. The kind I look at and wish mine looked like. I'm not sure if what I need to do is jump on the bandwagon and have a style exactly like everyone else's, but I think what I currently do could look better.

I do like the color contrast with the blue from last week's pic. I took that on my tippy toes on one of my patio chairs. The color contrast is good; I like the lighting as well. The photo still looks a bit sparse to me, but it's definitely a step in the right direction.

Hmmm, I can kind of see what you're talking about.. It seems to me that what you're sick of is the close up macro'd ones and the standard "this is my bowl of food" look (Did you like my super technical explanation?)

If you want to incorporate more diverse elements into your photos, but don't want to have to buy a bunch of props, why not try including some of the ingredients from the dish, but in their untouched state? (Do you know what I mean? I was having trouble figuring out how to phrase that.) Like if you had a whole fennel bulb somewhere in the shot of the quinoa salad? (Not specifically that, but just to illustrate my intent.)

Week 2: Thursday Review

Goal 1: The Quantification of Fitness

I tried another new yoga routine and liked it. The crazy woman tried to kill me and it was longer than usual (45 minutes), but it was good. Lots of stuff to grow into. The poses themselves weren't hard, but the combos really killed me. My legs just aren't that strong.

I'm beginning to think adding finishers onto this challenge cycle was a foolish idea. After these new exercises my body isn't used to, I'm done.

Goal 2: Quantification Makes Perfect

Metrics

Breakfast: Finally! A real smoothie! My body breathed a big sigh of relief about 2 sips in. :)

Lunch: Edamame & kale salad from Trader Joe's + a the last few ounces roast pork and a spoon of the blackberry wine sauce from last night.

Still hungry bottomless pit snack: 1 ounce walnuts

Dinner: Venison back strap with red wine blackberry sauce and broiled green beans with parmesan

Fats were good (68g), carbs were creeping toward where I don't want them (126g - maintenance), and protein was exactly at the challenge limit (75g). Check mark for the day for the mini-challenge.

Goal 3: More crafts! Find Employment!

Applied for 3 jobs.

Goal 4: Wherein I Level Up My Food Photography

Partially because of Fonzico's prodding, partially because I need to post the recipe anyways, I took pictures of last night's dinner. The light wasn't ideal, but I sprinkled ingredients around in an attempt at artfulness. We shall see how that all turns out when I pull the pics.

Ppssstt... finishers are solely for the purpose of burning every ounce of gas out of your tank after you're finished.  If you can't "complete" them, that's okay.. if you can't even bring yourself to do them, that's okay too.  They are there to push the envelope once you're into one of your "old hat" routines ;)  Don't sweat it, just keep being awesome :D

@BC: Logically, I know this. Had I stuck with the routines I was doing, finishers would be mandatory since I was getting used to those workouts. But ... I want to be awesomer and dammit I wanted more metrics to micro-focus on until this plateau is broken and everything gets in line where I want it to be.

On the flip side, I think I've found a workout video series I like to replace my old standby. Maybe by next challenge I'll be ready to add finishers in earnest. :)

Week 2: Weekend Wrapup & Review

Goal 1: The Quantification of Fitness

Friday: Did another HasFit workout (a 20-minute routine) and rocked it out.

Saturday: Surprise! 40 block walk.

Sunday: Pretended we were veal and spent most of the afternoon on the couch

All in all, a good week for workouts. No finishers, but I found some routines I like and think I might just stick with this HasFit business for a bit. A

Goal 2: Quantification Makes Perfect

Metrics

Friday

Breakfast: Smoothie

Lunch: Trader Joe's Kale & Edamame Bistro Salad

Dinner: Steak with shaved asparagus salad

Snacks: 1 ounce walnuts, wasabi toasted nori sheets

Fats were a little high (106g - 6 g over), carbs weren't terrible (117g - low end of maintenance), protein was over (98g)

Saturday

Breakfast: Smoothie

Lunch: 2 ounces salmon jerky

Dinner: Smothered steak with mushrooms & onions, a metric ton of spinach and a few sips of a summertime apricot wheat ale

Snack: Skinny iced vanilla latte with soy

Fats were suspiciously low (45g), carbs weren't terrible (110g - low end of maintenance), protein was way over

Sunday

Breakfast: Steak & eggs at the diner with a few bites of hashed browns and a coffee

Lunch: None

Dinner: Burgers with gouda & sweet potato fries at home

Snack: Almond butter & banana 'ice cream'

Fats were ok (95g), carbs were over for the activity level of the day (113g), protein was way over.

Well, go me, rocking it out on this week's mini-challenge. I totally didn't think I had it in me to hit (and exceed) my protein goal consistently for 5 days in a row. Not sure how I feel about all that protein - pretty much all I thought about all weekend was meat - but I'm glad I did it. Now if I can only do that while simultaneously wrangling carbs into the ketogenic range, I'll be happy.

A

Goal 3: More crafts! Find Employment!

I surpassed my 10 applications limit - and had an in-person interview this week. A

Goal 4: Wherein I Level Up My Food Photography

I posted examples of where I am and what I like, posted a couple photos and took a couple more that have not yet been posted.

This weekend on the blog, I posted this recipe for Buffalo Chicken Dip - and no, it's not even remotely healthy. I also took the picture with my phone, but a fair amount of planning went into the pic so I'm linking it.

A

Overall - I'm glad to be back on track this week and happy to see As once again. Also, totally pumped about the quick recovery from vacation - for the second time this year. Go, me. :)

I am surely working toward it - and getting the gains I had made pre-vacation back. Reason 99999999 not to go all crazy during vacation: I left on June 5 at 131.0 lbs. I came back on June 11 at 135.2 lbs. That's what eating your weight in biscuits + not exercising a bit will get you in one week. That, and I feel like my fitness level is needing to come back to where it was (though to be fair, I am switching things up all over the place and have no way to gauge fitness level right now).

We can do it! :)

In case y'all are interested ... I found another YouTube workout guy I like. Jillian Michaels was great, but I need a break. HASfit has over 300 free videos on its site, with other stuff like recipes and I think a community. I've got you guys for community and more recipes than I know what to do with, so I'm just there for the workouts. The trainer is a little on the peppy side - but he's kind of like an enthusiastic puppy, so it doesn't bother me. Makes the hubbs giggle, though.

I've done a couple of his 20 minute routines and a 30 minute something fairly crazy that incorporated mma moves but was really fun so far; I'm thinking about tackling his 30 day challenge post-vacation with an eye toward the 90 day warrior version after that.

Looks like interesting stuff. Now if they only had cardio yoga routines, I'd be in business!

Good week, well done. I like the pickled vegetable link you left, thats a good shot.

We took some interesting photos taking super close up ones.

I'm sure a good amount of those 5lbs is bloating from a billion extra carbs/sodium. I weighed in 10lbs heavier once after eating at a Thai Buffet, my skin hurt with the insane bloating (never went there again!) but it was gone in a couple of very water filled days.

That could very well be the case. My whole entire system was up in arms about the bombardment from things it no longer has to worry about handling. Gaining 10 pounds from Thai sounds absolutely horrible - I can only imagine how crazy uncomfortable that felt!

Let's see if I have learned my lesson and can remain better behaved in a few weeks when we go to Ohio (aka land of no vegetables and lots of potatoes).

My photography style overall leans more towards macro shots - I do a lot of flower pics and a lot of detail shots - which I think is why most of my older food photography is closer to that style. For phone pics it works well, especially with an app like Hipstamatic, but for overall recipe photography I think I need to break out of my shell a little bit. I've been trying to emulate my hubby's style for our past few outings - he does landscapes/HDRs/panoramas and stretching my photographic legs a bit has been an interesting experience. Totally not my style, but it's been good to grow.

Week 3: Monday Summary

Goal 1: The Quantification of Fitness

Did the HasFit cardio kickboxing routine - and the hubby joined me for half of it. Even though he was carping that he didn't feel good. Despite watching the 5 minute introduction video where the trainer shows you how to do the moves, I retained about zero and had no idea what to do with my body. About 2 minutes in, I was in a near-panic and wailed to the hubbs 'I don't know how to move my damn body!' so he helped. And then I kind of got it. Still can't do a switch kick to save my life, but it's not the end of the world. He was liking showing me the ropes so much, that he joined in and got about halfway through before having to lie down. I was proud of him for doing something other than play Candy Crush while I work out.

Goal 2: Quantification Makes Perfect

Metrics

Breakfast: Green Smoothie

Lunch: Chinese chicken salad from Trader Joe's

Dinner: Had to go to Geek Squad yet again - this time I think it was the last time - to pick up my hard drive and had Panera. I got the strawberry poppyseed chicken salad and only had 3 bites of the bread it comes with.

Snack: An entire 3 ounce bag of Trader Joe's beef jerky. Post-workout I thought I was going to die, I was so hungry. Post-dinner I wasn't full. So: meat!

Did good on fats (37g), did meh-ish on carbs (133g - in the maintenance band, but my workout was killer so I earned every single gram), great on protein (100g).

Goal 3: More crafts! Find Employment!

Started the week with a bang and sent out 7 resumes.

Goal 4: Wherein I Level Up My Food Photography

I wrote up a recipe, but did no work with the pictures I took on Friday.

Huzzah for hubby joining in! While some things I enjoy doing by myself, it can be more inspiring to do them with someone else sometimes.

YAY PROTEIN! Protein party! *flakes of jerky fall from the ceiling like confetti* um... maybe not.

Lol. I must say, since last week's challenge and really turning my focus onto making sure I get enough protein, all I want is meat. Specifically, jerky and ground beef (ground beef is usually what I crave when my body tells me it needs more protein).

I think it's time to buy another big ass hunk of beef for some oven jerky.

Week 3: Tuesday Summary

Goal 1: The Quantification of Fitness

Did a completely different 25 minute cardio yoga routine which went well + some extra stretching for the mini-challenge. A satisfying workout overall.

Plus, we ended up walking around for 45 minutes or so trying to hook up with my husband's aunt, who is in town for a couple of days.

Today, my arms are frickin killing me - right where the muscles meet and there is a dent. The backs of my shoulders aren't the most relaxed and care-free, either.

Goal 2: Quantification Makes Perfect

Metrics

Breakfast: Green Smoothie

Lunch: Broccoli Slaw & Kale Salad with Chicken from Trader Joe's

Dinner: Zucchini noodle bowl with lime almond butter sauce and beef

Snack: Half a Steve's Original Paleo Kit

After Dinner Drinks: Stopped in a bar to wait and had 2 very tasty cocktails with vanilla bean simple sugar + a whole bunch of other stuff I couldn't identify. Quinine? Lavender ice, champagne, some liquor I've never heard of.

Fat was a little high (125g), carbs were high - I guess from all the greens with dinner? (182g), protein was way up (117g). Calories were suspiciously high as well - 2002 - I'm thinking something went wrong with entering my dinner recipe.

Goal 3: More crafts! Find Employment!

Added 6 resumes to the list and landed an interview tomorrow afternoon.

Goal 4: Wherein I Level Up My Food Photography

No work done here.

Week 3: Wednesday Summary

Goal 1: The Quantification of Fitness

My arms were really bugging me where the muscles meet, so I took it easy today. Strolled around the city a bit with my hubby's aunt and her family and jogged for 10 minutes in place at home.

Goal 2: Quantification Makes Perfect

Metrics

Breakfast: Green Smoothie

Tour Guide Snack: Vegan tahitian vanilla ice cream - hands-down the best I've ever had

Lunch: Curry chicken salad with almonds + a bag of gluten-free chips

Dinner: Cuban pork hash

No idea what my full metrics were, since Van Leeuwen's doesn't have nutrition information on their site. I do know their stuff is as processed ingredient free as possible and is made locally in small batches. So, there's that. Discounting the ice cream, I was good on fats, over on carbs and hit my protein goal and then some.

Goal 3: More crafts! Find Employment!

Didn't have time to dive into resume sending today.

Goal 4: Wherein I Level Up My Food Photography

No work here, either.
