Gilfren's Grab at Great Gams

So in my first challenge, I was fairly general. Eased myself back in to the world of exercise after a 3 month hiatus. This time around I want to zero in my focus on strengthening my biggest source of embarrassment and discomfort... my butt and thighs... which I often refer to as my "butthigh." Now before you jump on my case and tell me there's no such thing as spot training.. hear me out. Butthigh is my focus, but I plan to continue my all over tune up with a good diet and upper body days. I haven't worn traditional bathing suit bottoms since early high school, always wearing swim shorts. Now that I bought a house on a lake, it's high time I make that change.

My Starting Point:

Measurements:(To be done tonight)

Weight: 150

Pictures: (I'm not totally sure I'll post rearview pictures publicly. I posted pics last time, but not rearview as I plan to do with this 6 weeks.. I will post at least side views)

Goal 1: +4 STR +1 STA

Body weight training - I loved my pure barre classes that I did daily for my last challenge, but they are expensive. Time to transition to something more affordable. I've decided to start with the BBWW at least 2x a week (at least 2 reps of the cycle) as follows:

  • 20 body weight squats
  • 10 push ups
  • 20 lunges
  • 10 dumbbell rows
  • 15 second plank
  • 30 Jumping Jacks

1/14

A: Complete circuit 14+ times(but no cheating and doing it more than 3x a week) in 6 weeks

B: Complete 12+ times

C: Complete 10+ times

F: Complete fewer than 10

Goal 2: +4 STR +1 STA

Lower body focus days. Complete the following circuit at least 2x/week

  • 20 Squats (any, but stay challenged)
  • 20 Plie Squats (w/dumb bell, weight TBD) Currently 8lbs
  • 20 Donkey Kicks per side
  • 20 Fire hydrants per side
  • 20 circling donkey kicks per side
  • 20 jump squats
  • 20 side weighted lungers per side Currently 8lbs
  • 30 weighted hip lifts (w/dumb bell weight TBD) Currently 8lbs

3/14

A: Complete circuit 14+ times(but no cheating and doing it more than 3x a week) in 6 weeks

B: Complete 12+ times

C: Complete 10+ times

F: Complete fewer than 10

Goal 3: +2 CON +1 WIS

Be a daywalker. My neighborhood is a playground between being a private community and on a lake, I have no excuse to not get outside more and do something active. At LEAST once a week I want to do any of the following:

  • Go for a run through the length of my neighborhood (small neighborhood.. maybe 1 1/4 miles round trip)
  • Go Kayaking for at least an hour
  • Go swimming for at least half an hour
  • Yardwork for at least an hour

2/8

A: Do one of the above listed 8+ times in 6 weeks

B: Do one of the above listed 6+ times in 6 weeks

C: Do one of the above listed 5+ times in 6 weeks

F: Do one of the above listed fewer than 5 times in 6 weeks

Goal 4: +2 CHA

My manimal was very supportive when I did the last challenge, during which I went to pure barre nightly, not getting home until 8pm some nights, and was essentially DOA when I got home. He did everything. Dishes, poop scoopin', dinner makin', everything... and didn't complain. Without telling him it's part of my challenge, I want to step up more now that I'm not going to be gone every night. 3 times a week, I want to do any of the following, or anything else substantial, without complaining or showcasing/leveraging that I'm doing it. Just doing it for the sake of taking it off his plate.

  • Any household chore (outside of the daily basics. Do things bigger like: vaccuum the house, mop the floor, clean windows)
  • HIS laundry (wash dry and fold)
  • Cook a meal (he is the chef in the house, so it'll have to be planned)
  • Back massage/scratchies
  • Wash his car
  • ETC items of circumstance

5/18

A: Do one of the above 3x a week for a total of 18+ times

B: Do one of the above 2x a week for a total of 12+ times

F: Do one of the above fewer than 2x a week. Fewer than 12 times

For the record, I totally feel your butthigh pain.  This routine you've set up is super specific and seems really doable.

I'd recommend taking those rearview pictures, even if just for yourself.  Put them in a drawer and don't look at them until the end of your challenge.  Then take some new pictures and compare.  It's amazing how our negative sense of ourself can warp even as we're improving.  I saw an old picture of myself a little while ago and was like, whoa, I am in much better shape right now than I was then, but I still see all the same old flaws.  Having the old pictures can be a good reality check.

Good luck, looking forward to updates!

Yeah I took them a couple days ago with my new swimsuit, then Promptly fought back tears while I put on my bathing suit cover up before heading out. I'm sick of feeling that way!

Good challenge! I'm glad you added in the other stuff.

Just don't forget to take a rest day if you need it! 4x/week is good, 6x/week miiiiight be a little too much. But maybe it's not - just listen to your body :)

I'll totally come run with you sometime! I've got to start focusing on that sometime soon if I want to run a half marathon this year.

Also - if you feel bad about your thighs...check out the quads I just posted in my challenge thread. Ha-ha. Dey be hyuuuuuuuuuge.

Don't hate on your body! It's beautiful :)

I love your goals! Especially with summer coming you have a nice excuse to get in the water!

intense goals. yeah, there's no spot training but that doesn't mean you can't work out he muscles involved.   I think you made a post about the braillian thing.  my g/f got it on a bet and it seems insanly hard to do.  just wish she followed through with it =/

I wish they didn't call it something so exotic to try and entice lol. It was just the best collection of glute and thigh workouts I could find.

Has she joined NF? Maybe it'd be a motivator!

yeah she joined last challenge with me but doesn't seem to care that much.  I wish she was more motivated because I know that if she put her mind to it, she would be doing great.  She just hates all exercise/sweating.

And you don't want the brazil butt lift to be exotic?  what about the butt master Leandro!? and 'werkiiiing de bhutt in owl de diffrnt anglez'

Link to comment

Yeah, my guy complains all the time about not being happy with himself, but he has no ambition to change it. Whenever he complains I ask him what he's doing about it and its a short conversation. That motivation has to come from that person. They're the only person that will finally decide it's time.

Well if the brazilian butt lift meant I could drink exotic drinks while working out, I'd be fine calling it that.

And owl de anglez are burning this morning, so the BBL has some merit to it!

jakjasdfnlkajdfan I need to get serious about this challenge. Instead, I feel depressed and beat myself up for not working out... yet dropping down and doing a workout doesn't happen.

pick 4 exercises.

say- I"m doing 10 reps of each of these.

then do them.

all at once.

you may find you want to do it more than once... then do so- but just pick SOMETHING- write it down in your book.  And then do it. It doesn't need to be extensive- just DOING something is > then NOTHING. :)

YOU CAN DOOOOOOOOOOOEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET

encouraging the bererker mode as well.  Usually getting started is the hardest part.  I never WANT to start doing shovelglove, but once I'm about 5 minutes in and my muscles are warmed up, I want to keep going.

Just think of it like a videogame.  If it's an rpg, then it's just 'I'll stop playing when I get 1 more level..just 1 more level...." pretty soon it's a few hours later and you gained 7 levels.  Or an FPS where you just need to finish 1 more map, 1 more round.

If you can start it- even for 30 seconds, you're broken the barrier.   now get those GAMS.

Rain will do that!

I agree with I-Jo and terosx, make it a game and pick a simple four. That's what I do when I'm stumped, at the end of the day I did something. Plus when it's cold, you feel a lot warmer!

hi,

i'm new, and i just wanted to say that i think your goals are awesome. wow. i love the formatting, and the way you've set up the grading.

usually when im stalling to work out, i figure out a way to shake it up and make it seem fun... like finding new workout music, or wearing a weird shirt... something like that. it works.

Yeah this weather sucks. Jo made me do 10 burpees yesterday...other than that, no exercise. Just do something! Maybe YOU can do 10 burpees today!

I'm hoping its just a temporary funk

So heres the thing...

I made my fitness goals in a rush. It doesn't appear that I can meet the fitness expectations I set on myself. I have learned that I cannot maintain motivation at home.. I need the gym membership to stay motivated (at least for now).

The bad news is that I'm going to fail the fitness portion goal.

The good news is that I'm joining a gym and will have a more attainable regime.

I plan to update my first post with my new plan. I don't plan to win this challenge by any means, and wholly plan to give myself F's for the fitness plans, so I hope it is ok that I list what I'm doing instead.

As long as you take something from your setbacks- you're even better now.  Sometimes it takes some tweaking to see what's attainable.

And I can understand the gym membership to stay motivated.  my g/f couldn't care less about working out but now that she joined a new gym up the road- when in a group she feels the need to push herself and went from 0% workout to 3-4 times a week.
