Dirt Worshiping Backpackers

Recommended Posts

Sounds good... well, I don't always wear a backpack, but trails, and dirt and outside!  OK!

Funny, I've also been digging and fixing up our yard and garden, so.... haha

I'm putting the group on the GoogleDoc under the Adventurers tab

Oh yeah...  I'm a flat lander, but every chance I get I head to the Rockies.  I'm hoping that doing squats 3x/wk, coupled with shedding some pounds will make this summer's backpacking trip the best ever.  1) can't stand my gut flopping over the hip strap and 2) hate being so wasted after those vertical gains.

Woo so excited for this! I love getting outside, but it's hard to legitimize the time sometimes. Love being outdoors! That's why I went into Geology :) But jeez I gotta get in shape!!

Aaaaahhhh... The AT. Quite a quest. I came oh so close to hiking the PCT back in the day but $#%@ happened. Definitely on my bucket list of unfinished things.

I'm planning to do the whole thing in four years... saving to take off six months and just go... two of my kids will probably go with me :)

Oh, so you kids might find this fun... I'm walking from The Shire to Rivendell: http://www.barrowdowns.com/walktorivendell.php

Right now I'm here:

You have walked 49.76 miles.
You have passed Woody End.
It is 2.24 miles to the next landmark.
You have 408.24 miles to reach Rivendell.

The day's march promised to be warm and tiring work. After some miles, however, the road ceased to roll up and down: it climbed to the top of a steep bank in a weary zig-zagging sort of way, and then prepared to go down for the last time. In front of them they saw the lower lands dotted with small clumps of trees that melted away in the distance to a brown woodland haze. They were looking across the Woody End towards the Brandywine River. The road wound away before them like a piece of string.

Those trails look so awesome... I hope I will get the opportunity to do at least a part of them in the future!

Hey! Are you guys full up? I filled my name in on the spreadsheet but I wanted to make sure there's still room for one more!

My first goal is to go on 6 hiking trips in 6 weeks so I think I qualify. ;)

That looks like a great goal! Where do you plan to make those?

I live in Utah and there are a BAJILLION hiking trails in my area. I have some regulars that I frequent.

Adams Canyon is my current 'behemoth' I've never been to the top waterfall. The beginning of the trail is this series of switchbacks in sand and it kills me every. single. time. So I usually only make it to this little, lesser known waterfall about half a mile in.

Just to give you a sampling of the hiking trails or nature walks I usually go on:

Company's Pond/Holmes Creek this one is actually a fishing pond destination but it's a challenging little ...hike type thing to walk around the pond. There's a lot of different terrain to maneuver through, not much incline but I like it for the scenery and the challenges of climbing over around and through. I've done this twice since April already I would like to make it all the way around the pond soon.

Beus Canyon Trail We accidentally took this one memorial day weekend trying to go up Waterfall Canyon (this link will be next) We didn't make it to the top (YET) before it got too dark and we had to turn back that day.

Waterfall Canyon This was our actual destination memorial day weekend and we did end up doing it a couple days later. The waterfall is ...awesome and totally worth it. This was a really hard hike for me.

Lastly, and I apologize for the wall of text but...I thought the group might enjoy some trail links :/ I'm doing this hike this weekend (if all goes as planned)

Ben Lomond Trail I think we're only going to the waterfall at the 1.6 mile point. I haven't been able to do this one in about 3 years so I'm excited.

Can I just say that as a group we have amazing goals? First we have walking to rivendell, and hiking the AT, and 6 trips in 6 weeks? That's just epic!

Excellent.

I almost went to school for geology myself. Welcome aboard!

Cool! And Thanks!

None of my goals directly relate to backpacking or hiking right now, but it is something that I want to do still very much. I might get to do fieldwork later this summer, and you really have to get in shape for that! Those rock samples don't carry themselves!

One of the cooler things where I am right now is Veduawoo (Vee-da-voo) A really cool collection of chunky Shermann granite. Bouldering is very popular here! That is something I really admire. The desire and ability to just crawl up a boulder?! Holy $#%!
