Wonderland Alice
So I'm back. I did actually finish the first challenge - I just stopped posting right before it ended because of all the craziness in my life. The crazy isn't gone. In fact - I think its worse. However - my father in law will no longer be attempting chemo - after 37 days in the hospital following the first treatment - they decided chemo isn't for him. I didn't gain any weight on my cruise - however I've gained 4 pounds since getting back and a couple more pounds in fat I'm fairly certain. We won't discuss the inches I've gained. I'm hanging my head in self disappointment. I'm very sad. But today is day 1. So my goals for this go round... 1) build myself a home made trx type thingey by the weekend.2) Starting Saturday - use that trx type thingey 3x a week!3) Use either the squats or pushup or lunge workout that shows up on my phone everyday that I currently ignore.4) Pay attention to fitbit stairs and steps so you can make an accurate goal for next go round.5) Log my sweet tea, sweet tart and pixie stick intake. No one said you have to decrease it yet. Just log it. Yup. That's it. I DID officially apply to an open air market for July 4th weekend. I will know by Wednesday if I was accepted. I chose to do this instead of selling online. If I am accepted, it will def make my life crazy as I will have to begin sewing from sun up to sun down until the show. Heidi
I like the logging goal - this was the way I was actually able to change things, or decide that something was fine. Wonderland Alice
I can't wait for you to start planking Heidi!! Matching your planks has become a goal of mine I just ran out to my garage - and added myself another little goal. I am going to spend 5 minutes every day cleaning my garage. Its dreadful and I just can't stand being out there. So I set my timer and maybe if I tackle it 5 minutes at a time - I can make it tolerable by the end of this challenge. I pulled what I think are the proper straps out of my garage to make my trx. I'm going up to watch the video now. For the day 6 pixie sticks and a handful of tic tacs plus 3 cotton candy jelly bellies (it was all I could find in the bottom of my glove box). I am officially addicted to sugar. I think I'm a bug! Good thing the Orkin man has already been here this month. I believe I'll make myself a cute little book to post my sugar in. I need to see it all in one space just to see how bad it really is. Can anyone explain to me just how bad sugar is? Our brains need it. I can't actually eat the fake stuff because it makes me sick. I get that there is fructose, lactose, etc… and all our natural sugars. Honey is a "sugar" and used as a sweetner… So if I were capable of eating yummy white sugar in moderation (which I'm not) what does it really do to your body (as opposed to honey or fruit sugars)? Why does Tosca Reno call it "white poison"? BrockLee
Since I started school I have become more curious about what is going on with things like sugar and if it is as bad as some people say. You can find tons of Yahoo articles and Ehow crap about how bad it is but come on....give me the science! Show me the experiments! I found this one on Google Scholar this afternoon. Its pretty damning for the "white poison" C.H. Wideman et al Nutritional Neuroscience 2005 The effect of intermittent glucose administration on the circadian rhythm of body temperature was studied in rats to provide evidence of sugar addiction, withdrawal and relapse. Metabolic and behavioral phenomena were also observed. Biotelemetry transmitters recorded body temperature for the duration of the 4-week experiment. Rats were divided into an experimental and a control group, which were maintained on the same habituation conditions for the duration of the experiment, with the exception of weeks 2 and 4, when the experimental group was presented with a 25% glucose solution. Experimental animals displayed a precipitous drop in body temperature and behavioral changes associated with withdrawal during week 3, when sugar was removed. There was an increase in kilocalories (kcal) consumed during weeks 2 and 4 by experimental animals and, by the end of the experiment, these animals showed a greater percent increase in body weight. Elevated blood glucose levels were found in experimental animals. The study demonstrates that the effects of sugar addiction, withdrawal and relapse are similar to those of drugs of abuse. Implications of the rewarding and addicting effects of sugar are related to weight gain, obesity and Type II diabetes. Furthermore, pitfalls related to dieting are elucidated. So it looks like you were right, you can become addicted to sugar and you can go into physiologic withdrawal when you don't have it. That is kinda scary along with all the type 2 diabetes, weight gain and that type of stuff. Our brains do need it, but our body is capable to breaking down complex carbs via glycogenolysis or fructose or other sugars that we eat and providing glucose that way. I am not a no sugar nazi, I like it as much as the next person, but too much can be very bad. And like you said, its hard to keep from having too much! Link to comment
Wonderland Alice
BrockLee - completely dig your picture! Too funny! I have to find research now. What initially started me on it was Tosca and her promoting honey and agave… in the end I "think" our body views them the same as "white poison" because honey and white sugar are both basically simple sugars. Honey can be beneficial in other ways, but as a sugar - I just don't see its chemical difference from white poison. I'm going to look and research… and I suppose I really need to break my addiction. I don't like chocolate or coffee and I don't like tea. I like SWEET tea. If it isn't sweetened with a simple syrup solution while its hot - forget it. I'm not drinking it. I've pretty much gotten over Coca Cola. Now its these blasted sweet tarts, pixie sticks, cotton candy jelly bellies and sweet tea! On a side note - my trx is half made and I've fixed my printer that's been broken for 3 days. maegs
One thing I remember from The Skinny On Obesity and The Bitter Truth is that, in the case of glucose-fructose, it's the fructose that's bad because of how it's processed by the body. Biochemistry, however, is not something I have any ability to explain, so I'm not going to try. Both videos are on Youtube if you want to check them out, they both focus on sugar. Weekend Warrior
Glad to hear your cruise was super fun! I wish I could give you info about sugar, but I only remember seeing on nerdfitness. It's a pretty cute video about sugar lol. I hope your trx workout's going well! I really like how specific your goals are! That should make them easy to be met Link to comment
Wonderland Alice
Im a litttle bummed... Hence my absence. I applied to a juried craft show and didnt make it. Im sure it has to do with my pictures. My trx is not finished but my goal was to have it done so I could begin my workouts next week. So Im still good as long as I get those 3 workouts in on it!!Im on my way to date night with the hubs. He has been sober 5 years now. His new obsession is working out. I wish I was as driven as him but honestly his obsession makes me not want to work out at all. I hate the way I look and feel... But obviously not enough yet!On the flip side, Ive decided to divorce pixie sticks and sweet tarts. My daughter is going to camp on Monday. I bought 10 extra pounds of chicken. I have broccoli and oatmeal. Lets see what I can do when I cant use her as an excuse. FYI... Shes 15 and capable of feeding herself, but since my hubby never eats with us, we specifically eat together. Probably our worst indulgence is italian ice.Hubs wants pasta for dinner. Oddly enough I want that creamy cruise ship oatmeal with warm milk and a bit of brown sugar... And some beef jerky. Wonder where I can get that in Savannah??? Elastigirl
Sorry about the craft show. Are there others you can apply to? Do you know other people who have qualified, and would they be willing to give you tips to help next time? Can't wait to hear how the TRX workout goes? Wonderland Alice
Sorry about the craft show. Are there others you can apply to? Do you know other people who have qualified, and would they be willing to give you tips to help next time? Can't wait to hear how the TRX workout goes? There are others I can apply to. In fact, this one is called "the First Saturday" and I can keep trying for each 1st of the month. I did send an email to the jury committee asking what I can do to increase my chances next time, but I haven't heard anything back. I'm nearly positive that its my pictures. I have a photog friend and she is going to virtually help me since she is half way across the country! I just spent the last couple hours dragging wooden boxes I have for the show out into my driveway, bleaching them, rinsing them, moving them back to my sidewalk…I'm hoping that 90 degrees overnight will dry them out so I can repeat the process tomorrow. I want to leave them in the sun, but its been so rainy here! There are 12 of those boxes - they are grenade boxes - well built from 2x4s and 2x6s and prob 10-15 pounds each. Not a terrible little arm workout. I didn't workout today, but between the Pastors Lunch and cleaning those things I'm whooped. I'm already over 10,000 steps for the day and its not even dinner time. On the docket still: finish my trx and cook my chicky for tomorrow! oh and get the whiney, cranky teenager packed for camp. Is it wrong to be glad she is leaving for the next 4 days?? I hate her "whiney" days. She is a great kid, but man…. when its whiney time - I just wanna lock her in her room. I wasn't allowed to be that whiney - neither is she - she just is. Aaarrrggghhh….
