Gearing up for the long slow slog

Recommended Posts

So here are my goals from the challenge post.

This is the first challenge that I have tried and its making my a bit nervious but this community looks to be very supportive.

Height: 6' 0"

Weight: 15 stone (not too fussed about the weight, more into functional fitnesses)

Brief overview of goals:

Diet Goals

- There is a tradition at work that if it is your birthday you bring in cakes for the office. This happens about twice a week but I am not going to indulge and save it for my one cheet day a week.

- I normally drink decaff coffe in the mornings at work and fruit tea in the afternoon. I am swapping my last coffe of the morning for a black tea.

Fitness Goals

- Do some kind of exercise everyday except for 1 day off each week. Planning on a mix of weights and cardio on different days.

- I am planning to cycle to the train station (about 5 miles each way) at least twice a week.

- 1 pullup.

Level Up My Life

- I have a few items cluttering up my house that I need to get rid of.

- I am currently borrowing a car so I need to buy one for myself.

- I want to start a side businesses outside of my main job.

If you follow a specific way of eating:

Slow Carb with a cheet day. We are meat reducers so mostly eat Quarn and vegitables.

Any other piece of information you think would be useful:

I only have a barbell and dumbell set for exercise at home and currently no pullup bar so I need to buy one. I also want a skipping roap.

I am mainly happy with my diet except for the temptations throught the week.

I am aware I have a few lofty life goals that while I may not finish I want to get started on.

Welcome to challenge! Nice goals, I know about temptation at the office. Mine orders pizza constantly and someones always bringing in muffins or cookies or something. It's tough to say no thank you, but you'll get use to it.

I agree whole heartedly. Its the slices of cake and donuts in the kitchen when I have gone for a coffe that I find the hardist to resist.

Just about every day there are meetings on my floor, and the leftover cookies and brownies are always left right outside my office. For a while it was really tough to resist, but then I started telling myself that office-provided treats are generally stale and not worth it - if I'm going to splurge, it better be on the moistest and most elaborate dessert ever, not some cardboard cookie. That may or may not be true but it's been a helpful mindset.

So I thought an update was in order.

Tue

A bit of a starting day so didn’t manage to do much

Wed

Diet: No cakes out at work and drunk the extra cup of tea.

Fitness: I did some Wii exercise games for over 30 min.

Life: My computer has been down due to hardware problem so nothing to report here.

Thu

Diet: No cakes out at work and drunk the extra cup of tea.

Fitness: No exercise due to fixing my computer.

Life: I was happy to get my computer up and working after a problem with 2 failing RAM modules. I spent most of the time installing the programs I need.

Fri

Diet: No cakes out at work and drunk the extra cup of tea.

Fitness: Cycled to and from the train station (total of 10 miles). I had a headwind in both directions, how is that possible?

Life: Mostly spent the evening playing games after work. The cycling tends to tyre me out.

Sat

Diet: Not in work and generally don’t drink coffee at home. Going to modify the cheat day so I don’t eat soo much sugar (in the form of chocolate) and just eat the carbs that I have been avoiding the rest of the week.

Fitness: My fiancée was hogging the living room (only place I can use weights) and didn’t feel like exercising outside. In retrospect a lame excuse.

Life: Installing more programs on PC and then a few games until lunch when we left to go round friends for the rest of the day.

Sun

Diet: Not in work and generally don’t drink coffe at home. Good for most of the day but had to finish off a bit of chocolate from the Sat cheat day.

Fitness: Really lame day. Could have exercised but didn’t. I kept putting it off until I forgot about it.

Life: Played computer games most of the day. I did install Eclipse to set myself up for programming so I did make some small progresses.

Conclusion

I have made some small progress but looking back there were times I could have done more. I will have to work on that and not get distracted or avoid things.

Yeah, resisting free food at the office is a tough one. We have doughnuts and pizza way too often. Fortunately, my tastes have adapted to my lifestyle, and the doughnuts actually smell bad to me now (the pizza, on the other hand, is sometimes still tempting -- probably the greasy cheese and pepperoni, not the crust). You can do it!

everyone i sit around just knows that i don't eat that stuff, so they dont even tell me its there most of the time.

and since ive made a point to tell them that i dont eat those things, i make a point to not eat them there, because if i do once, then someone will say "oh, but you did last time..."

I wish I had your determinination. If there is noone in the kitchen when there are cakes out I will indulge... I think that might be a solution. So no more going to the kitchen on my own for tea from now on. I must have an escort :). Thanks for the help Spezzy

Just a quick midweek update.

Week 2

Down to 14 stone 10 this morning so Hopefully I will continue going in the right direction.

Mon

Diet: No cakes out at work and drunk the extra cup of tea. I have found Camomile tea is nice in the afternoons. I did have a small piece of cake at a friends house today.

Fitness: Need to start a morning routine again as I didn’t do anything today. I am going to buy an interval timer.

Life: Nothing to report here as I had no free time after work.

Tue

Diet: Still no cakes at work. Starting to get paranoid that there will be 3 at once and it will wear down my willpower. Good news is I substituted 2 cups of tea today.

Fitness: Started the beginning weight routine this morning and its surprising how much strength I have lost. Took about 20 min in total.

Life: Had an appointment but did hand in a piece of coursework so some progresses today. Unfortunately missed my tutorial.

Misc: Got the pullup bar and the skipping rope today.

Wed

Diet: 2 cups of tea and no cakes :)

Fitness: Cycled to and from the station. Still can’t understand how I have a headwind going each way. Makes it really hard to see if I am improving.

Life: I think I need to make my life goals a bit more concrete. Not much progress so far.

Misc: Interval timer arrived. Going to give it a go tomorrow.

Thu

Diet: 2 cups of tea and no cakes :)

Fitness: Quite sore after yesterdays cycle to the train station so did some yoga for about 10 min after I woke up.

Life: I have found some of the stuff to go on eBay so I think tomorrow I will write up the auctions and take the pictures.

Fri

Diet: So the cakes finally get presented in the kitchen. Did I resist them? You bet I did . Feeling happy about that.

Fitness: No pain this morning and it wasn’t raining so I could not think of a good reason not to cycle to work.

Life: Got home and installed the eBay programs that make auctions easier.

Sat

Diet: Currently experimenting on my cheat day to find the best things to eat.

Fitness: 2 hours of gardening. It’s looking better now but planning to finish the rest off tomorrow.

Life: Took pictures for eBay.

Sun

Diet: Good

Fitness: The rain stopped my plans in the garden so I ended up in front of the computer today.

Life: Mostly computing and course work today.

Week 3

Mon

Diet: Good

Fitness: 10 min of yoga today.

Life: Got the pullup bar installed.

Tue

Diet: Good

Fitness: Did the beginner weight circuit today twice through. Got to use the pullup bar instead of the bent over rows.

Life: Working on an android app but I know nothing about Java so it’s a bit of a struggle.

Conclusion

I feel I am getting back into the exercise but feel like my life goals are being difficult.

Galthris

Awesome to have you aboard.

You're awesome

Couple tips:

#1 Just Start

#2 Keep Going

Seriously, be the nike ad, it sounds stupid but it works.

Anyway, back to my drunken wandering.,

Regarding Diet:

#1 Carb Counting

#2 Palepo

#3 IF

#4 Calorie Counting

I know a bit about all of them and I'm always willing to help.

May I ask what course work refers to?

Hi Dantes

Thanks for the inspiration. :)

I will try to start carb counting as I think I have settled into the Paleo diet (with a cheat day or do you recomend against that?). I tend to make lunches for work so counting often becomes a problem when I am doing a batch of lunches.

The IF I think will be a real challange but I will give it my best shot.

The course work is to do with a degree (my second) I am studying for in my spare time that is funded by my work.
