5C0T and Yosemite Sam

Hi.  I've been lurking the site for a while, and just found the community and challenges.  I know I'm a little late to the game, but I have a special event coming up and I want to take control.

A group of about 10-20 are spending a week in a couple of houses in Yosemite.  I know most, but not all of these people.  We are planning on hking half-dome; I have never done serious hiking and I'm a little afraid of heights.  I will not be in charge of the menu and my gym will be nowhere nearby.

So the bulk of these challenges is going to be around my week in Yosemite, with enough to spill over through the rest of the month.

I'm not exactly sure how to do the "points" for these for the RPG, so help there will be apprectiated.

1)  Hike Half-Dome -- Hike the whole thing -- including the death-defying climb to the top.  STA 6

2)  Yoga twice a week -- I just bought Double D Diamonds Yoga workout and have to use it.  DEX 4

3)  Do a real, unassisted, non-jumping pull-up.  I've been trying this for a year and the assists have been a crutch.  STR 2

4)  Control my meals.  I may not be in charge of the menu at Yosemite, but I control what I eat.  No wheat or soda for the remainder of the challenge.  CON 2

5)  And as an aside, I'll probably hang out mostly with the folks I know on this trip, but should really try to get to know others.  So a challenge will be to have a sincere conversation with one new person a day on this trip.  After the trip, get out of the house and meet any one of the people I chat with online in person, once a week.  CHA 1

Okay, folks, I'm a newbie here.  Help me out with the scoring or any way to make the goals more goal-y?

Scott

5C0T LOG 25 June 2013

Yesterday my Yosemite buddy and I hiked the stairs in the office bulding, 9 flights up, 10 flights down -- then I walked up the 6 flights to my office.

Last night I was stuck in traffic and late to my Boot Camp class at the gym, so I just went even more balls out.

This morning, co-workers and I went to the cafeteria for a snack. Other than milk, everything in the cooler was soda or soda disguised as tea. I found some plain almonds and got a glass of water at the fountain.

I was about to sneak a piece of candy a co-worker brought -- one piece wouldn't hurt -- it was made with wheat flour, so I stepped away. My lunch is a tuna salad loaded with veggies and Mrs Dash, and a nectarine.

After lunch, did the stairs again, 10 flights up, down, and another six flights up. Winded, but feeling good.

Hello NFers

I continue with stair climbing exercises  -- up and down 10 flights, then up another 6.  Hopefully that will help with the hiking I'll do next week.

Last night my trainer and I worked on my "ups" as he likes to call them.  We did some assisted pull ups, some negatives, some holds. It was a struggle and my traps are sore today.  Hopefully that's the sign of weakness leaving my body.  I tried really hard not to be jealous of the 20 year old who who flying through his pull-ups, unassisted, many reps, many sets.  I failed.  Sigh.

Went home and made a healthy dinner (turkey burger on a bed of sweet potato, topped with sauteed onion, guac and tomato -- kept leftovers for lunch today).  And I reached for the Girl Scout Thin Mint Cookie in the freezer.  Nope.  Wheat.  Had a strawberry instead.

After my workout(s) yesterday, I skipped yoga last night.  I'm not doing well on this goal -- yet.

Bit of a set-back last night.  While I was packing away for my trip to Yosemite, my kind roommate made dinner.  Unfortunately, he made pasta.  There was really nothing else in the fridge, and it smelled really good, so I caved and had some.  And since I caved on the wheat there, I also had some girl scout cookies.  Just four, I have SOME restraint.

I'm pretty sure I need to set some standards on my next dietary goal, so it's not "all or nothing."

For now, though I'm going with compliance goals of 90-100% = A; 80-90% = B; 60-80 = C; 50-60% = D, <50% = F

I can still make an A -- will just have to watch the burger buns and the cool, sweet beer after hiking.

My vacation was great. San Francisco is a fantastic city and I had plenty of food options while I was there and managed to eat within my guidelines.  Then Yosemite happened.  My friends brought plenty of my DOC (drink of choice), Mountain Dew.  I was lost to it.  I exhibted no willpower there at all.  I did manage to avoid breads, but sneaky wheat got in there anyway.  I'll need to eat very clean during the last leg of the challenge in order to score a B on the food part of my challenge.

I did manage to hike to the foot of quarter dome.  Thunder storms and an insistent Ranger ( a real one ) kept us from going further.  It was the longest, most strenuous hike I've ever done.  16 miles, 12 hours.  My calves are still sore.

I got in some inverted rows, some yoga, and some rough-housing, tossing the kids around.  Back to the gym and more pull up training tomorrow.

Wrapping up this challenge early in the day, because I've got a stomache thing and I'm not going to be hiting the gym tonight.

1)  Hike Half-Dome -- Made it to the base of the top when the Ranger turned us back for weather.  Had plenty of stamina and courage left, so I'm giving me a B+ and raising my STA by 4

2)  Yoga twice a week -- I did yoga once a week and vague stretching every day.  Giving me a C, raising my DEX 2; and setting better goals for flexibility next challenge.

3)  Do a real, unassisted, non-jumping pull-up.  Failed.  This is irritating me -- will have to develop a program for this.

4)  No wheat or soda:  I did this about 50% of the meals I ate.  C.  CON 1

5)  Hang out with folks I don't know: Although I did retreat to the vacation cottage kitchen when the crowd of people were getting to me, I did have conversations with every person there.  And I set up an internet date per week.  They weren't good, but I can't control everything.  CHA 1
