The 'Blaidd of Greater Discipline pt.1 [2013.5]

Blaidd

Recommended Posts

This challenge is my anniversary as a NF challenger (I was a lurker for about 2 months before) and i've had a wonderful journey so far, learning about myself.  I've learnt some really awesome things, but the biggest things i've learnt are my stumbling blocks.  Recently I've rediscovered my passion for food  - not just eating it, but making it and experimenting with it and the overall feeling of comfort and relaxation that being *active* in the kitchen gives me - which i think has now contributed more than anything to my weightloss these past few weeks.

The biggest stumbling block now is: I lack self discipline.  Ok! I don't necessarily lack discipline but I get lazy and either don't do something or totally procrastinate until there's just no point in doing it anymore. Also I have this fear-mongering little devil on my shoulder - that has all but beaten my happy angel into pulp - who regularly whispers words of fear and doubt and anxiety into my ear reminding me that it's easier to be lazy than to work at something.  How am I ever going to make all the positive changes if I don't learn discipline? The crazy thing is, that the minute I do something, I do it really well.

wRFsJspl.gif

So the Mission this challenge: To accomplish a higher level of discipline in my life through the following quests:

1. Beat the Laziness Demon, by putting boxing gloves on the Discipline Angel.

I literally plan on getting into a ring to fight. I've been doing research on gyms/schools in the area that offer Kick Boxing and MMA (I don't know which one I want to do, yet).  I think I've settled on a school, but I need to sign up by 4 August and start attending classes at least one evening a week. This will be on top of my 5k running PVP with Nuala that I'm doing and my lifting that I love (don't even think of asking me to stop doing this).

Quest Complete: Sign up for classes with a trainer, get the necessary equipment and attend a minimum of 7 sessions

Goal: A = signed up + 7 classes, B = signed up + 5 classes, C = signed up + 3 classes

Reward: New hairstyle

2. Nurture the Discipline Angel back to health by +50gr daily protein intake and -30gr daily carb intake by 9 Sept.

Over the past two challenges, I developed a really good habit of stopping the binge eating and both keeping my calories no more than 5% above/below my recommended daily intake and spreading them across at least 2 meals a day.  However, I noticed that I was still not eating enough protein (by a long shot) and eating carbs at a maintenance level.  So in order to make this stick, i'm going to gradually increase protein & decrease carbs weekly until i'm at a good level for this challenge (my saturated fat levels are relatively low and the rest are pretty normal).

Week 1: Protein +15gr; Carbs -5gr

Week 2: Protein +15gr; Carbs -10gr

Week 3: Protein +30gr; Carbs -15gr

Week 4: Protein +30gr; Carbs -20gr

Week 5: Protein +50gr; Carbs -25gr

Week 6: Protein + 50gr; Carbs -30gr

Quest Complete: Reached weekly goal for at least 4 full different meals.

Goal: A = 4 meals, B = 3 meals, C = 2 meal

Reward: New Designer Bra

3. Weaken the Laziness Demon by reaching and maintaining a 90-100% snack free day.

Sheesh, who doesn't have a snacking problem?!  Funny thing is that I don't have a sweet tooth and generally don't like chocolate or candy or cake etc, but towards the end of the last challenge it was like I was possessed and I couldn't get through a day without a cookie and it got worse from there. I didn't recognise this person. I have put in the 90% in order to allow for sharkweek - which is the only time I actually want to eat or enjoy eating chocolate. damn you hormones - and for taste testing my own baking creations on a Sunday night, if the desire takes me (it hasn't yet).

All snacks that are banished from my day are on this list and I lose % points for every snack that I consume (as in if i eat 4 cookies, that's 20% gone).  In order to actually make this work, I have to have other healthier snacks on hand.  I need to get off my lazy butt and prepare these in advance (see, some discipline).  I make my own biltong (kinda like jerky but better) and dried fruit and I need to make time to get to the farmer's market to pick up enough nuts for the challenge.

Quest Complete: 90 - 100% snack free daily.

Goal: A = 90%+, B = 85 - 89%, C = 80-84%

Reward: A Pair of Designer Heels

Life Quest: Get the Discipline Angel ready to fight by following a set routine

It's not surprising that my life goal follows my mission.  I feel that I cope better when I have a routine to follow and a lot of the items on my routine are crucial in achieving my quests (packing in lunch and snacks; getting clothes and bags ready for the next day etc).

I have a list of routine items that need to be met and I will garner points for each item.  Some items are more points than others and that is because they are vital to the mission. Others are relatively low because I already do them or they aren't entirely crucial if missed/skipped.

Quest Complete: 85 - 100% routines completed daily.

Goal: A = 85%+, B = 75-84%, C = 70-74%

Reward: 2x Professional House Cleans

Why would I do any of this to myself? It's simple, really!

I have an extremely long term goal of being healthy enough to see my nephews grow up and have healthy kids of their own; to be able to slide into a leotard without looking like a marshmallow and (potentially) train other dancers again; to comfortably slip into a wetsuit without looking like a whale and go back to surfing; to just feel physically comfortable when I participate in the sports I love or when I travel around the world; and to outlive my parents (1 month and I beat my mum who had both diabetes and emphysema when she died of meningitis).  I don't want to miss out on anything that life has to offer, especially because I already know how sweet it tastes. *THAT* is why I need to learn discipline now!!

Hi AB!

Procrastination is a tricky demon and one I hope your angel of discipline will whoop into submission in this challenge!

I think that bringing routine to your day is a great idea!  I'm doing something similar in my life goal - trying to schedule time to do those routine tasks that are awfully dull or essentially maintenance.  I took inspiration from reading 'Why am I so disorganised?' - a fabulous book, which reminded me that most of getting things done is about systematically doing all those kind of tidy-up/follow-through tasks!

Good luck with your next battle, may you be ever successful! :)

I'm gonna box him right into the ground and then kick him while he's down too :P  I will take a pic when i've learnt how to tie those strappy things around my hands - yay! Watch out everyone I'm going badass. hehehe

Yeah I love kids, as long as they belong to other people (i've already raised 3 kids - 2 of whom have their own families already) so I can't use my own kids as motivation, but i really would like to see that my nephews do not follow the paths that their grandparents followed (not that they ever met my parents), so if the examples in their lives are healthy then they're already on the right path. I want to be *that* kinda example.

Funny thing though - i am super organised. If i say things like "i can't find something" my boss's first reaction is awlays "but that's not like you at all". My office is like the neatest place in the building and i cannot stand clutter (that's why you'll most likely never see me doing a decluttering goal).  I *love* routine. But when it comes to myself and my well being, it's honestly the last thing on my priority list. So not only is adding these things and forcing them into a routine to support my goals but also to become a habit and for my own well being.

Thanks for your support, as always, Kev.  I know we're going to rock this challenge.

RE anniversaries: this is my Tenth Challenge.

JAAAAMMMMESSSS!!!  It's wonderful to see your smiling avatar!  And wow! 10!  That's something to be proud of - it's a testament to the fact that you never ever give up.  Hugs xx

Thanks Kishi - i look forward to being strapped into them ;) I used to be so disciplined, but I can't put my finger on when it changed.

Yeah, I wasn't all that surprised when she passed (even though it did come as a shock at the time) - she was the biggest hedonist i hope to ever meet.  There was no such thing as consequence or moderation or responsibility in her books.  AND i never wanted to be like that - luckily i'm not the complete opposite - so i plan on making a great life for myself.  xx

Go AB go!  Can't wait to see what you do with this quest.  Just remember to take it one day at a time :)  Let's do this!!

one foot in front of the other - that's the only way to go.  I've learnt that my key to success is to work on something for at least a challenge and a half for it to stick.  AND so far it's a winning formula.  I've noticed so many remarkable differences in my life already from just adopting 3 habits, imagine what it's going to look like 2, 3, 5 years down the line!!  I'm so excited, but i have to remember to slow down a bit :)

Thanks for your support, Hira. As always it means the world to me, you've pretty much been there from the word go. xxx

These are amazing goals, and I look forward to reading about your progress!

Thanks Kat.  I'm excited to see where you go too!

Great objective!

I am admirative of the indicators you set to measure your progress in tackling procrastination!

I've read a lot that self-discipline is like a muscle : the more we train it, the more it grows!

Thanks WN.  Sometimes you just have to set some pretty strict rules for yourself.  I just have to remember to exercise the discipline muscle as much as i exercise the other muscles. I'm glad you will all be there to remind me.

Day -5: So i've discovered that i am going to have to give up my favourite meal - sushi.  We went out for sushi last night and yet again i was ill by the end of the meal.  I'm not entirely sure what the problem is, but i'm leaning towards the rice.  I was crampy and bloated and couldn't breathe and burpy - it was just unpleasant.  So i guess from now on, any sushi i eat has to be sashimi or salads/soups.  I guess i can live with that, but i do so love my california rolls and salmon roses.

I haven't totally sorted out what I'm intolerant of but sushi rolls make me feel very ill. One suggestion I had was that it might be the seaweed wrapper. I have a friend who can only eat sushi rolls with sesame wrapper. I haven't been brave enough to try it yet.

AB, I am stealing your routine list (excluding the makeup and moisturizing).  After working from home for the past 3 years I find it difficult to do some of the basic life nessecities, i.s. shave, wear decent clothes, make the bed, etc.  I think I will have to make a simular checkist to go through each day.  Thanks for the great idea!!

I'm looking forward to hearing about the boxing classes and all the smackdowns that will be handed out!

Hi Jenn.  thanks for subbing - woooooo xxx

It took me forever to be willing to try sushi. I used to be a super picky eater. Finally tried it. Found out I love it. Since then I've developed some weird food allergy or intolerance. I haven't totally sorted out what I'm intolerant of but sushi rolls make me feel very ill. One suggestion I had was that it might be the seaweed wrapper. It could be the wrapper and i will try whatever it takes, cos i honestly love sushi.  If it is rice i can live without california rolls if i have to - fresh fish ftw.

Don't scoff at moisturising as a guy - you never know what miracles it could do to your skin.  But please go ahead and borrow my routine.  I started changing my routine about 3 challenges back with a chorewars game with Jay (we needed to stop doing marathon cleans on weekends and start doing small ones daily).  I hear you on the slothing around when you don't have to see clients.

I have a very casual work environment (i'm currently sitting in my slipper socks with a knee blanket and my uber warm gown - it's only 10°C outside), so last challenge i started wearing heels at work, just as a small change, and it has done wonders for my confidence!.  I honestly feel like a different person and before i knew it i started changing other things subconsciously - like wearing tailored outfits and makeup and doing my hair - i do look a little outta place in our super casual environment, but this is more like who i am then a slothy person. Small changes make a huge difference.

I'm doing something similar with my goals... just starting much smaller.

small is great and the way i recommend anyone start.

I know that my goals might seem lofty and ambitious, but honestly it's just building on foundations that i've already set.  I've cracked the back of certain habits, so adding a few smaller things is good going.  Once i have those things under control then i add a little something else on top of it.

I already go to gym +/-5 days a week, adding running to non workout days isn't a hard change and adding boxing in the evenings is also not a big change (in summer i go to the local pool most evenings and swim train with the olympians/regional guys - at a way way way slower pace/intensity of course). I've got a routine already, so adding to it is a minor adjustment.  The snacks honestly are going to be my biggest hurdle but i've chosen other things around it that will take minimal willpower on days that i'm not feeling it.

Day -4: What a long day!  I was at gym when the doors opened to get my 5k training started, after which i did a few stretches which turned in 30 minutes of glorious relaxation (i was like a floaty cloud all day), then I had to run out at lunch time to go fetch Jay's new graphics card (the other one went belly up 10 days ago and he couldn't wait til my courier delivered the next morning, le sigh), i then rushed back to Portuguese lessons, got home after that and started baking cos i had an order that needed filling.  I eventually sat down to dinner at almost 10pm.  By the time i crawled into bed i was dead.  Jay mentioned that i didn't even twitch when he came to bed 20min later.  What does the average human being expect when they're not used to such long days.

So some of the newer folks to my thread (and even the vets :P ) don't know that i love being in the kitchen, just pottering around.  About 4 weeks ago i realised that i miss baking (not eating it, but doing it), so i started baking every sunday and bringing the goodies to work for the staff and for the clients to have with their coffee/tea when they visit.  I've made choc chip cookies (finding my feet), red velvet cheesecake brownies (2 requests that i combined to make awesomeness) and this week i made Orange Miranda Cupcakes.  I've literally been filling paying orders since my cookies (one of our clients loved them so much she offered to pay me to make it and now our sales team tell the clients that i bake to order at a small fee if they show an interest in the goodies). I've made my Miranda Cupcakes almost every day this week (4 orders).  My website, when it goes live eventually, will have all the recipes on it because I honestly don't want to sell my goodies, I just want to make them and have other people enjoy them.

Don't worry, I also have a Paleo/Primal blog and have managed to perfect a paleo kung pao chicken (that i've made 4 times in 2 weeks because Jay loves it so much) and 4 soups (1 is primal though).  When i have a moment, I will post all the blogs and you guys can try the recipes out (i will also link them for you). i'm currently working on "paleofying" an enchilada recipe and when i have i will link that too :)

Anyhoo, that's been my day. Sharkweek starts in a few hours and i'm starting my pain management, so see ya!!
