I was concerned at first about the changes to the challenge format until I really thought about it... I mean we're still doing three goals and a lifestyle goal, just the big difference is now it should be progressing towards a long-term goal, and posting a picture of our motivation. Not as big a difference as it originally sounded.

I mean there are some changes to level 1 people- keeping them focused exclusively on completing a challenge- and to how winners are chosen. though I guess neither of those changes made a huge impact. I just completed my first challenge and would have graduated to be here anyway, and as for "winning," my reward is my own sense of accomplishment.

Any other thoughts on the format change?

I like the format change a lot. I'm a big-picture kind of person.

Unfortunately I'm having a lot of trouble coming up with my main quest! I have a big, generic one that will allow me to branch out like I was originally planning, but not sure if it will fly. Do people think something along the lines of "becoming a better version of me" is too broad?

Maybe that's a theme or motif that colors how you set your long term goals? In your "theme" of being a better version of you, is there one thing (or a number of things) that stand out? Maybe the braches you mentioned could be the long term goals? Try picking one of those as a long term goal, and drilling down on it for the 6-week challenge, and see if you come up with something interesting.

I struggled with the same thoughts, but came up with this:

Theme: Become more all around fit.

Long-term goal: Run a marathon in October

6-week challenge goals support the long-term goal: Run, cross train, fuel appropriately.

It also works its way back up- those 6 week challenge goals will help me run the marathon, but they're also contributing to my theme.

I had a whole challenge laid out... and now I can't figure out how to make it work with the new rules...

I don't really have to make fitness goals because I don't suck there... I suck in the rest of my life

I had a whole long list of cool challenge ideas and had the next two or three challenges pretty much planned...

so now I have to rework them.... sigh

Alienjenn - I am in the same boat as you!     I had all my goals plotted out for the next challenge, and they are so broad and varied that they don't FIT in a 'main quest' pattern.   I have no idea what to do with it.

I was hoping to find some suggestions on what folks are picking as 'their main quest' so I could get some ideas.    Just as an example, some of the things I wanted to work on this challenge are:

-Continue my 3&3 program of run 3x/week and strength train 3x/week.

(With bonus points awarded for getting to 5 pull ups in a row, and getting a 10 minute mile pace or better.)

-Cook 3 Paleo Meals per week.

-Put $75/week into my savings account.

-Make and fulfil dentist and eye doctor appts.

-Redo Starpuck photoshoot pictures.

Main quest eludes me.  Especially since I also like to grab themes from BSG to use as my challenge titles and themes.   This is like playing on hardcore mode now.  Hehe.

these all sound like they fit into a "level up starpuck" mission.

leveling up your cooking by doing it 3x paleo

Starpuck- maybe you can try working "backwards?" Start with what you have for your 6-week challenge, and see how far down the rabbit hole of results that could get you after 2 or 3 more challenges.

List off what your running and strength training can get you to- like a race, fitness event, nature hike, mountain to climb, etc. Make that your big goal (and eventually a reward).

Meals can pretty much support anything- general health, losing weight, keeping in shape to support fitness goals, etc.

ok.... so my main goals that I had worked out were to work on my family and house...

I am not sure how to make that into a "main quest"

here is what I had for my challenge

-family game night once per week

= sub goal thirty min special alone time with each kid once per week

-work on house cleaning fifteen min per day and one hour per week on project

-continue free writing & investigate publishing options = three times per week

-host the biggest loser contest on fb

Hmm, AJ - maybe something along the lines of 'Fortifying the Fortress' as your main quest?      If you think of a fortress as needing:

  • physical stability (house cleaning)
  • morale upkeep and troop loyalty (family game night)
  • strategic plans for defense (writing and research on publishing)
  • assemble new recruits and oversee their training (hosting the fb project)

Just an idea.   That's the first thing that came to mind when I saw the stuff!

Alienjenn - at a high level, how about 'home is where the heart is'?

UH60Guy, I like the format change too - particularly as I'd decided last week that to achieve some medium-term goals, I needed to map them out over several challenges.  I also think that working towards a vision and identifying a purpose is more likely to sustain people through the challenge.

eh.... it's just that I don't do well with change (chalk that up to dealing for 13 years with a son on the autistic spectrum) and I think most of my balking and frustration stems from "I was prepared for the next three challenges with everything all written out and now I have to figure out how to change what I have to fit the new rules and I don't like change"

so it isn't that I *DON'T* like your idea....

I agree with you on the "not liking change".  I had my list ready to go when the 6WC was opened and now I have to rethink and reformat my challenge goals.  I am sure we can retool and move forward as strong as ever.  My challenge is which path or "main theme" do I want to concentrate.  I have a health path of losing weight and achieving a health BMI.  I have an exercise path of workout goals in pushup and situps along with distance goals in running.  Also, I have a personal growth path towards my MBA and advancing in my career.  All three I will work on at the same time, but I am not sure how to consolidate it into a "main theme" besides just calling it "leveling up Smurray".

Does "escape a 300 mile imaginary cave" work for a main theme? Actually, I'm really happy with the new format because, well, it sounds a lot like my Escape the Cave challenge and I love make-believe :)  Plus I tend to be scattered everywhere (see here for evidence).  It'll take some tweaking, but I'm using my battle log as my base for the new format.  Die Saboteur Die!

Starpuck, maybe a bsg theme? Like, you hope to one day serve in the Cylon war, so you have to prove your worth before being recruited. Or something

Hee!  I've only ever done BSG themes. ;)   So I love your idea!   I came up with one yesterday.   Might be stretching a bit on the main theme quest, but it works for me and it tidies it all together!     My signature links are all updated if ya wanna check it out.   I went with a theme mirroring  the scene between Admiral Adama and Lee when they were sparring-- where Lee is commenting he thought it was just sparring and Bill tells him that's why he doesn't win.       I really need to get over the mindset of 'doing this for results' IE dieting' and doing this because they are my new healthy instincts.

Now that I am all sorted out, I can't wait for Monday!    I picked a really tough goal this time around.    COOKING RELATED! OMG.

I love the new format, simple is the way forward! Totally burnt myself out last challenge trying to do too many different things. I really like the unity of it all going towards one main quest, makes you feel like you are always making process towards the bigger picture, even if you are just doing one part of one of your mini goals. Love it. But also understand that change is hard, especially if you've pre-planned!
