Mir's Beautiful Bitchin' Badass Challenge

4 pages already? Really? I'll never be able to keep up with your thread again.

On the Wheel of Time topic, I think Sanderson did a better job with the material than Robert Jordan did toward the end, to be honest. The last three books were amazing, especially the final one. Totally worth reading if you were like me and hoping Jordan would just start to wrap it up the last several books. I just finished it and am now sad that it is over. Just amazing.

Good news... I was afraid it was going to be one of those series where I loved the start but by the end of it, the whole thing would just lose its enjoyment and in the end it just wouldn't bring me the same enjoyment as if I just stopped reading.  Kind of like The Hunger Games... I never should have read the third book IMO, some things are just better when they are left to the imagination. The series could have ended with the first book and I'd have much better feelings about it.

I personally found the books in the middle of the series to be arduous but I loved the world so much that I kept at it. I seriously wonder if Jordan hated women due to the way he portrayed them. I was so tired of all of the arms folded under breasts, pursed lips, scowling, glaring, braid-tugging, and just general bitchiness all over the place, especially at "wool-headed" men. Not to say it isn't warranted from time to time, but Jordan would set the scene to where the reader understood perfectly well why said action was taking place but these women got all bent out of shape just out of habit. I want to like the characters I'm reading about, especially the women. Kahlan Amnell from the Sword of Truth series, for instance (hell, even a Mord Sith if the mood is right).

I seriously think there are more pages dedicated to other characters than to the "main" three ta'veren. Hell, I think there was an entire book where Mat doesn't show up at all. The final three books fix all of that, and I loved them. Especially the last one.

f*ck yes.

Add in the discussion on fantasy books and that makes this the best thread on NF in my opinion. :)

I'm also in the never read club for Jordan's Wheel of Time. I read the first one back in middle school, found out how many more there were, and said "nope!" Maybe now I'll try again since the series is finished.

Since Wheel of Time's a completed series, it's on my list of things to read through eventually. I have this thing now about starting a series unless it's completed already. I'm really, really, really tired of waiting 200 years for each new book in a series. It's a scary place to be, nearing the end of your series, its still not done and the author's near death.

I'm not just looking at you, GRRM. You get a good stare too, Mr. King for what you put me through.

I once tried to read the first book.  Never made it past 5 chapters.  I even tried skipping ahead.  Nope.  It was so boring and uninteresting.  I still, to this day, don't understand it's appeal to people.

My sister was in a constant state of panic over whether or not the dark tower series would get finished.  At least we know GRRM has a backup plan with HBO.

The path to Swolehalla is paved with a lot of Swolehate, and you won't get there without being Swole of Spirit too.

This may be blasphemy... but I feel the same way about the Lord of the Rings trilogy... I wouldn't have even known the full story if it wasn't for the movies...

I didn't make it past chapter 3 of Fellowship.  Maybe going back and reading it now would be different though, I haven't picked up the book since I was like 15.

I was in a coffee shop when I heard that he got hit by a van. I panicked and immediately chain smoked 4 cigarettes until I could calm down enough.

HBO is going to finish his Song of Ice and Fire before he gets book 6 out.

I AM going the distance

'Cause all I wanna do is go the distance. Nobody's ever gone the distance with Creed, and if I can go that distance, you see, and that bell rings and I'm still standin', I'm gonna know for the first time in my life, see, that I weren't just another bum from the neighborhood.

UGH, right????? Book 3 was TERRIBLE, and book 1 was SO GOOD. It's like she got tired of writing. The third book was all like, "shit happened and then I got over it, oh and also I've spent 3 books trying to choose between 2 men and I chose XXX by the way."

Agreed!!!! So agreed on this entire thing.

LoTR was hard to get through. Like, really, really hard. I'm the kind of person who can sit with a book all day, completely absorbed, but LoTR was not like that for me, at all. Every page was a struggle.

Agreed on these counts. Backup plan or not, they won't execute it the way it's supposed to be! I'm sure there's a clause in there that they can't move forward until he writes the books... don't you think??

I made it to Tom Bombadil and /ragequit the books. I just couldn't take it anymore.

The movies were much better but by the end I hated them too. The battles and whatnot were enjoyable, as was the mood, but there were far too many times where I was screaming "Why didn't you just do that in the first F-ing place! " If you have access to giant birds, one really does not attempt to walk to Mordor. And all kinds of cool battle scenes and epic fights when all the had to do was fix the damn sword and let the undead do it for them? Can you say "I Win" button?

Then to top it off, they let all hope rest on one unexceptional hobbit because he supposedly had the ability to withstand the temptation of the ring when no one else could, only to have him fail at the end. It wasn't Frodo who destroyed the ring, it was a fortuitous act of clumsiness.

I'm baffled every time LotR gets compared to Star Wars. One of the greatest moments in cinema is in Clerks 2 when Randall trashes the LotR fan until he pukes.

There's only one trilogy
