The Incredible Shrinking Artinum

Where to start? Evening run, I think. Another three miles with a five minute walk at both ends to warm up and cool down.

Speed intervals - 6.99mph, 6.36mph, 6.44mph

Slow intervals - 5.54mph, 5.75mph, 5.62mph

Average for whole period - 5.44mph (including walks).

Time taken - 39:46

DIstance - 3.6 miles

Today has also seen very low calories and the 417 from this run (or thereabouts) is only going to bring it down further - about 508 net. Woot! I will eat properly tomorrow...

But better news - I've forced myself to work tonight, and I've read through most of the CV course. Just the appendices to go. Various minor changes made but the basic structure is pretty good - it paid off to plan it out before I started. Too tired to do more now but I've started, which is always the hardest part.

Okay, so today was a little different. I've signed up with a ten week runner's fitness group at work, and this lunchtime I have been involved in all manner of weird running-related pursuits. It was exhausting stuff.

I tried to prepare best I could for it, but I was a bit limited. Next week I will do better:

1. There is no need to wear my workout clothes under my work clothes. They have changing facilities there.

2. I should bring my cycling water bottle next time, as my regular work one has a broken cap and cannot be easily carried.

3. It may be worth bringing a towel so I can use the showers. No-one wants to be sweaty at work all afternoon.

4. I tried to avoid eating for a few hours beforehand, but the timing is awkward. Stitches resulted.

I'm rather pleased with it so far, though. My weekly runs don't seem to be going anywhere - in fact, my average speed seems to have dropped slightly. This is a good opportunity to push a little harder and see what I can do, and it's a chance to meet other runners. I'm pleased to see I rate somewhere in the middle of the pack - some proper, determined runners were easily lapping me while I also saw a fair few beginners. And hopefully it will get less hot as the year progresses. Hot weather is not good for me and has been a major cause of this afternoon's headache.

Week four/five (already?) now complete. Morning measurements taken:

Weight now at 10st 8lb (148). That's one pound down on last week.

Waist came out at 34" (up an inch) and belly at 32.5" (same as last time). But I don't know if I'm even measuring the right bits.

Calories for the week (Mon-Sun) were 508 (!), 2339 (!!), 1426, 1499, 1966, 1284, 1891 - an average of 1559 per day.

Got two workouts in, and TWO running sessions (one as normal, one group fitness session at work)

I'll be running later this evening, and Thursday's session at work is still my intention.

EDIT: Run completed! 3.61 miles total, including the warm up and cool down walk (3 miles actual run).

Average speed was 5.4mph. Highest average per half mile interval was 6.98mph.

Total time: 40:07 (about 30 minutes of which was running).

Incidentally, I've decided to stop logging things on Fitocracy. It's stopped being fun - since they redesigned the quest system, I'm no longer following them so well and don't know what to aim for. Logging my regular workouts has become a chore, and I didn't even know how to log Thursday's lunch time fitness session. It doesn't work for me any more.

The group runs seem like a good idea. As much as I prefer running solo, I can see how a group would spur a person on.

I've had a couple of lazy days recently - meant to exercise Tuesday, didn't feel up to it. Decided to yesterday, and didn't (partly because I didn't want to wear myself out for today). Perhaps I need to switch my bodyweight circuits for something different.

Today has seen Week Two of the running fitness group. I pretty much killed myself, gaining two stitches by the end and STILL going. Better prepared this time, taking a bag with workout clothes, towel and shower gel. I avoided lunch until afterwards, when I sorely needed it.

I think this is a good thing for me. My weekly runs aren't really leading to anything - this is pushing me harder. I don't know whether I'm improving at all but I'm enjoying the challenge!

On Friday I intended to exercise. It didn't happen. Tired from work, from the entire week... I had no motivation for anything. I did very little all evening, in fact.

So this morning I have punished myself by getting them done now. I gave myself a little time to wake up, emptied the dishwasher, played Minesweeper on the PC (the new version with Windows 8 is great fun!) and then hit the music. I haven't listed my workout for a while, so here goes:

4 minutes dance to warm up

Three circuits of:

20 prisoner squats

10 push-ups

10 lunges per leg

15 dumbbell rows (at about 11lbs - it's a big bottle filled with water)

45 seconds plank

30 jumping jacks

About a minute rest between circuits, stretching afterwards.

I really am out of practice with these. I ache now. For the final circuit I couldn't get straight into the push-ups, so I switched them around with the dumbbell rows - still doing a complete circuit, but in a different order.

Next I am going to relax with a cup of tea and the internet before sorting out lunch.

A nice walk around Thornton Reservoir this afternoon - nice to get out of the house. 2.45 miles at an average of 3.33mph, so pretty gentle. Very nice, though.

I'm resting after yesterday's workout... and I'll be running again tomorrow!

Sunday draws to a close. The challenge likewise is ending. I'll take the final measurements tomorrow morning - tonight, I just wanted to mention that I've been working on the rewrites to the interview course. Onto page 9 of about 34 so far, so I won't be finished for the challenge - but I've started. That's the hardest part.

Calorie counts for the week were 1287, 2148, 1854, 1628, 1902, 1557, 1614. An average of 1713 per day.

It's all over. Final measurements taken this morning on getting up:

Weight - 10st 8lb (148lb)

Belly: 32.5"

Waist: 33.5"

Out for a run shortly, so no time for a complete breakdown now - I'll collate a summary either later tonight or (more likely) tomorrow.

EDIT: Run completed. 3.63 miles, consisting of five minutes walking at each end to warm up and cool down, and three miles of running in the middle. Total time 38:08, average speed 5.75mph (top interval speed 7.24mph).

This run was a little different - I'm pushing a bit harder. Rather than three sets of half a mile hard and half a mile slow, I'm doing 0.75 miles hard and 0.25 miles slow. Same distance, but more effort. The average speed is up a bit, so it seems to be working.

Full summary to come, but in the meantime here are my "after" photos. I don't know if there's much difference, but I feel slimmer.

(I wanted to display that as a table, but it didn't work.)

Notes:
* The waist/belly measurements at the start were approximate, hence the (brackets).
* It took me forever to get started on the life goal, and I've only achieved about 60% of it in total (but I've not given up yet!)

Overall, I've lost 7lb, my belly has shrunk a little and I've kept my running going - indeed, I've effectively doubled it. My maintenance suffered a fair amount but I'm fighting back on that front - another set of three circuits done this evening! The life goal is disappointing, but progress is encouraging all the same.

Scores:
Maintenance - B. I managed at least one exercise routine half the time and a full two the other half. (1.5 STR, 1.5 STA, 1.5 CON)
Cardio - A. Indeed, extra credit is probably deserved for exceeding myself! (2 STA, 2 DEX)
Weight Loss - A. I remained under an average of 1800 calories a day for the entire five weeks, and lost seven pounds. (2 CON, 1 CHA)
Life - C. Only managed about 60% of the work in the five weeks and no real excuse. (1 WIS)

Not sure where to post general news any more!

Another running fitness group today. The weather held out for us, but it was a little cooler (very welcome!).

We were (apparently) doing fartleks today. They are hard work. I ended today with a stitch in both sides and sore legs. Pushing harder!
