It's that time of year again, time for the Fall Brawl for it All! Awhile back, forum member Andy Gates came up with the idea that we do a virtual power lifting meet where everyone tests their 1 rep maxes in the big 3 and we compete for bragging rights. It was such fun that we decided to make in an official Nerd Fitness forum activity that we do every 4 months or so.

The competition will be held from September 7th to September 22nd. During this time, test your 1RM in the Big 3, which consists of squat, bench press, and dead lift. Historically, there has also been interest to test the Super Total (Big 3 + snatch + clean & jerk) as well as to test the Big 4 (Big 3 + OHP). The sheet has columns for adding those in as well for those who want to do them, but the contest is for the Big 3.

Here's the spreadsheet for this meet: 2013 - Fall Brawl For It All

We're using kg, so just multiply by .454 if pounds are your arbitrary mass measurement unit of choice. The sheet includes calculations using the Wilks Formula so we can judge across sex as well as weight. The person with the highest Wilks Score totalled from the Big 3 lifts will be the Nerd Fitness Powerlifting Champion.

Everyone is welcome here, of all abilities and levels of fitness. This is all for fun and the major reason we track it is so we have a record that you can come back and check your progress against later (ok, and bragging rights). Reporting is all on the honor system, but videos are encouraged!

The Prizes:

  • The person with the highest Wilks Total will receive
    • The forum title "NF Power Lifting Champion". This title will have to be defended at the next virtual meet in order to be kept.
    • A t-shirt or tank top from the NF store.
    • The defending champion is Gainsdalf
  • The person with the highest Wilks Squat will receive
    • The forum title "NF Squat Champion". This title will have to be defended at the next virtual meet in order to be kept.
    • The defending champion is Ancalagon The Black
  • The person with the highest Wilks Deadlift will receive
    • The forum title "NF Deadlift Champion". This title will have to be defended at the next virtual meet in order to be kept.
    • The defending champion is bigm141414
  • The person with the highest Wilks Bench Press will receive
    • The forum title "NF Bench Press Champion". This title will have to be defended at the next virtual meet in order to be kept.
    • The defending champion is Wildross

The Rules:

You get three attempts in squat, three attempts in bench press, and three attempts in dead lift, in that order. Standards are page 17-20 of this, but minus the judge participation. You must do all 9 attempts within the same workout. You're doing this on your own, so you're expected to judge yourself. Add the press and the olympic lifts onto the end should you so choose, but the official contest is for the Big 3, so do them first.

The best result from each of the 3 lifts is added to your total. If someone squats 240, 260, and 280, only the 280 is added to their powerlifting total.

Weigh in on the morning of your lifts. This is the weight you use for the competition.

Generally the rules details would be IPF RAW, which means no squat or bench suits, no knee wraps; belts and wrist wraps are fine.

Tips & FAQ: This will be updated as questions are asked

  • USE A SPOTTER AND OTHER SAFETY PRECAUTIONS- We don't want anyone getting hurt. Use a spotter, preferably 2 (one on the each end of the bar) and safety bars on squats and a spotter on bench.
  • Take long breaks between attempts of the same lift so that you take each lift fresh.
  • Lift order is squat attempt 1, squat attempt 2, squat attempt 3, bench attempt 1, bench attempt 2, bench attempt 3, DL attempt 1, DL attempt 2, DL attempt 3
  • Take a weight on the 1st attempt on each lift as something you know you can get, such as what you can typically do for 3. and go from there to ensure you post a total.
  • Especially if this is your first time, chose weights you are confident in and try to complete all 9 attempts. This will help build confidence for future lifts and competitions.

We'll see if all that front squatin' has the same effect on them as back squattin'. I'm personally lookin' forward to the next one, don't think I'm gonna be much improved on this one beyond my squat. Damn cut attempt.

Yeah I dunno. Might be tough to retain my title given my current training schedule. I can probably add 10lbs to what I did at SSS

But for Jan I plan to put up 150 Wilkes points. That would be a 545DL at my estimated BW.

You might want to fix that for clarity.

Meanwhile, I'd be happy if I could just match my SSS numbers :(

I'm with you, if I had tested my maxes before I left for the mountains, I probably could have decimated my old record.  Now I feel like I'll be lucky to catch it.

I'd like to add 10 lb this time as well, but I don't know if it'll happen. I want 600 in Jan, but will be happy if I hit 575. I'll probably just try to add a bit to whatever I hit in competition in December.

This is where I'm at for bench because i'm going to do paused this time.

On it, thanks!

Good luck err-buddy. I'm gonna have to pass again.

Oh boo, I was looking forward to having you kick my butt. Just work up to a heavy single on the day at like 95%?

/me breathes a sigh of relief.

Though I repped 335# in the bench without a spotter last week.  I've got at least 350# in the old chest...  Now if I could get my body weight to head the other direction.

hmm I might just be able to fit this in with my cycle, we'll see.

Looking forward to seeing the bench master at work again, I'm still well impressed by your last lifting comp video.

I'm in.  I'll be better than last time but not by much.  This huge deficit cut plus my bastard elbow issues is going to kill any strength gains I've made... deadlift has seen massive imporovements- and since I see no pull up category- I'll be screwed for upper body.

Sigh.

Oh well.  I'll be happy with my dead lift.  :D

/me looks for curls and shrugs categories.  Leaves disappointed.

We can start up a Bro competition! All curls and shrugs must be performed in the squat rack with duckface to be competition legal.

Do you do your curls WHILE taking a selfie with your shirt up to check your abs?

Because that's really important- you can't qualify for the comp if you can't do that.
