Devil's Lake, Wi Sept 28th Meet, Greet, Hike

Recommended Posts

Where? The South Shore of Devil's Lake State Park in Wisconsin.

When? Saturday September 28th. The meeting and the greeting will be 2pm-3ish, with a hike to follow.

What? I already said a meet and greet with a hike. Specifically though we'll hike up the eastern bluffs to check out the Devil's Door, it is a short though rather vertical hike with a good elevation raise and some fantastic vistas. After that, those who aren't up for a long hike can head back down. There is a playground on the south shore for the little ones, or man children. For those up for a longer hike I plan on leading one on the circuit of the West and East bluff trails, worry not about your abilities, or needing to keep up. No nerd will be left behind!

Why? To meet some Midwestern nerds face to face, also because the park is beautiful.

Aww man... I wish this was on Sunday instead :( The boys have a soccer game at 1. There's no way we could make it there by 2, otherwise we would be there.

I'd totally be down for this if it was a different weekend, but I have guests in town that weekend :(

Wait, are you in Wisconsin now?!

Haha no but I've also never been! I'm in Indiana.

Welp, Sundays are bad for me, since I work 11 pm Sunday to 7am Monday. I can screw up my sleep cycles on Satudays, but Sundays not so much, sorry Koo.

As for the weekend... well I'm not going to cancel the 28th, I've already decided I'm going up there then and so I am... but I love Devil's Lake and would be more than willing to schedule on another weekend.

Now I was trying to get it in September before the weather turned too cold, since I figured some folks wouldn't be down to hiking in the cold. For instance I'd be down for hiking on the weekend of October 12th, but looking at historical weather data (I am such a nerd) the average temp that time of the year at Devil's Lake is highs in the low 60s to mid 40s.

Now I'm perfectly willing to hike the bluffs in less than ideal weather,

Clearly...

But I don't know what other people would be up for. Would you guys be up for a latter autumn get together?

I would be up for one almost any time, except maybe dead of winter. That would probably be hard with the kids once there's snow. They would wear out really quickly. October would be okay, however we still have soccer going on, so the time of the meetup would be a factor. *** I just looked, it looks like the 19th would be the only possible day for us  with timing around soccer.***  :( The 12th would have been doable as there is no 1pm game--except  there is a family wedding that day up in Wisconsin Rapids. Ahh well, keep throwing things out there, I will come some time!! I REAlLY REALLY want to go the 28th  :(  There were three 1pm soccer games this fall and that is one of them. Usually they are a lot earlier :( We wouldn't be able to get there until after 3, even if we left FROM the soccer field. Oh well...next time!

Haikoo... I'm still going to be dragging the kiddos out on the 28th (hubby couldn't get off work) but I'm totally up for going back again on Sunday the 29th if you wanted to meet up sometime in the afternoon. We could let the kiddos romp together at the park. AND!! I have 2 boys in soccer, too... so we can bring a ball and have fun with them... ;) Actually, almost any Sunday afternoon works for me. Thoughts?

FA: I'm totally up for a hike in the snow later this year if you are!!! I've never done a snow-run, but I think it'd be REALLY fun! Also I'm up for another hike in October. Bring it on!!

metal_weaver: I forgot we have a picnic at Schuster's Farm on the 29th. Usually Sunday would be okay, but that one is booked. We should definitely keep trying, though!

How old are your kiddos?

Awww, oh well. Hopefully next time, then!

My boys are 9, 7 & 5; the older 2 are on the same soccer team. I held the "little" one back cause this is my first year with getting involved in kids sports and I didn't know how it worked. Honestly I'm glad I did. :)  I'm really looking forward to taking them on their first Devil's Lake hike though!! I think they're going to enjoy it.

Well! I'm still going to go. I asked off and everything. I've been looking forward to this for a while. I've wanted to check out more of our state's natural attractions since I was inspired by a friend who toured the nation with Americorps. So yeah. You can still count me in.

I'm still in! I have a prospect that I'm looking into for kid-care yet, but if that falls through I'll have my 3 boys (9, 7 & 5) tagging along. I'm really hoping to be able to join you guys on the long hike, though. I've only ever been hiking there once, when I was a teenager, and it was amazing.

EEEEE!! I'm so excited! :D And nervous. LOL! It's going to be great, though, I know it!!

Aww I so wish we didn't have so much going on this weekend!! So jealous :( We better schedule another one some time.  Metal, sounds like your kids are just the right age to hang out with mine. The girl is 9, and the boys are 6  (7 in November). Though I don't know if she'll play with a boy. Cooties and all... ;)

Well guys it looks like it might rain tomorrow. With some luck we'll miss the worst of it, but who knows? I'm still going rain or shine. I like the park and I'm fool enough to scramble up the bluffs in snow when I weighed over 100 more pounds I can do it a bit wet now.

Once again we'll be meeting on the "South Shore", which is the parking area off South Lake Drive (not to be confused with South Shore Road... which will get you to South Lake Drive).

I'll be hanging out shortly past the entry gates around 2pm to see who shows up. Last time I was there I was roaming off network and had no data connection so I wont be able to post. I'll PM my number to Minotaur and Weaver if you can't find me and want to send a text, I should still get texts, I had cell signal just no data... though I did on top of the East Bluff *shrug*

You can spot me by my bright red noncanonical Superman shirt.

Or because it might be raining my equally bright red hoodie from work.

Or spot my distinctive not quite as bright but no less red pickup truck

Awesome, awesome, awesome. I did manage to wrangle one of my friends into coming, so there's that. I'm planning on making some paleo-friendly trail-mix for before, during, or after the hike, cause I'm nice like that, and I'm also going to bring plenty of water, for the same reason. I'm getting super pumped. Had a co-worker ask me to switch shifts with him and I got to say, "Nope, I've got plans, I asked off for Saturday," which was fun.

Boo that your friend won't be coming along, but yay for trail mix! LOL! (trying to make the best out of it)

FA, you take better pics than I do. >_< LOL!
I'll more than likely be wearing my Caffeine hoodie...

Night Before

unless it's really warm. Then I will probably wear my fave blue wolf shirt.

Can't wait to meet you guys & get some hiking in! ^_^

'KOO! We will definitely have to get together sometime and let the kids play around and talk mom-stuff. ;P  YAY NERD-MOMS! *fist-bump*  And I think as long as we have at least one soccer ball present, we shouldn't have to worry too much about them not playing together. ;)
