Eirlys - Getting On Top Of My Game

Eirlys

Recommended Posts

My sympathies about your bad news.  Hang in there.  I just watched "The Three Pickers," a music video with Doc Watson, Earl Scruggs, and Ricky Scaggs.  In it, Doc Watson says that if he had not been blinded, he would have been an electrical engineer or something similar, with music purely as a hobby.  He went through a dark time until music rescued him, then went on to become an icon of American folk music.  Who knows what will happen.  As was said before, we all have our Iron Man moment.

Good luck on maintaining your challenge.

Hey there, Drude Duid.

Sorry to hear you got confirmation of the bad news from the hospital. Well, as others have said, it could be an iron man moment... Optimism is not something we brits are usually good at, but it's true - life hands us a pile of poo sometimes but as the old saying goes, when life hands you poo, make lemonade. Brown lemonade. Er... Sorry, I'm not sure where I'm going with this. Anyway, it's good to see you staying strong and keeping on top of the goals.

And GBBO? Temptation city! My family are fans. I heard there was a biscuit dales last time? Yum. There has to be a pun there... Um... ExSalivate? No, that's rubbish, but never mind.

Hi M.Scientist & 18ck

Thanks for your sentiments.  As I care what you think, I re-read Steve's article and I can assure you I haven't been wallowing - for over a year, I've been as proactive as I can think of.  The only next 'step' I can think of taking beyond this is to persuade myself to be happy and live joyfully, which is harder than it should be, due to events over the last 18 months.

M. Scientist - thanks for the inspiring example.  I would like to wish that the dark times are nearly over, but then who knows.

18ck - re the lemonade - not sure that druids are that 'down with nature' - gross! :-P  And I think you'd have liked the scientisty contestant on GBBO who got booted off last week - over the course of the contest he attempted a "Pie-thagoras", biscuit dalek and psychic octopus cake.  But it was the set squares & rulers to make Pie-thagoras that I liked, even if the end result wasn't quite there :)

Hi!!  I'm sorry it took me so long to figure out who and where you are now (I actually had help -- thanks, AB!), but I'm here now :)  You can't get away that easily.

So sorry to hear about the tough stuff.  One day at a time, dear friend.  And here's to being strong enough to not give up on the dream.  I am in awe of you.

HUGS.

Hi, great assassiness - glad to see you in my thread, I should have guessed one of your skills from your current guild would track me down eventually ;)

And thank you for your message of support - it really does help!

25% Challenge Update

So we're already 1.5 weeks into a 6 week challenge, which by my calculations means we're already a quarter-way through.  In terms of goals, so far I've been very pleased with my progress:

1. Learn - Grade A

Have finished reading Responsive Web Design with HTML5 and CSS3 (all 300 pages), and am 150 pages through Javascript & jQuery: The Missing Manual.

Additional bonus, I get to record this time (on my commute) as hours against my 'Continuous Professional Development', which is mandatory for the industry I now work in.  I'm now just a few hours off my annual required minimum.

Upcoming geek-out: I will add learning about websockets, comet web application models & LightStreamer, as well as domain sharding & different types of proxy servers to my list of things to get a handle on this challenge.

2. Stand up straight - Grade A

It's hard but I've been checking.  I sense I may need to retain this as a goal for 6 months continuously before it really becomes my natural posture.

3. Efficiency - Grade A

Home - think I managed all but 1 days getting ready for bed earlier.

Work - have been massively motivated by this challenge to get stuck into work at 5pm for a 6pm departure time.  Only today did I leave at 6.20pm (missing my 6.10pm target) but I'm calling this a mitigating factor as the project manager came over at 6pm and talked to me for 10 minutes!

The other night I had to stay late til 8pm (an 11.5 hour day) but not much I could do about that!

I still need to reduce the amount of procrastinating I do during the day, but one thing at a time.

4. Purify - Grade A

Minimalism - Dispatched about 5 books to the amazon buy-back scheme.

Inside - Will spare you the details but have made more progress dissecting my thoughts.

Also I deactivated one of my facebook accounts.

5. Get Training & Get Healthy - Grade A

Weight - has settled down from 58.3 kg on Monday last week to 57.5 to 57.7 kg over the last few days.  Have staged a number of resists.

Didn't manage HIIT or floor exercises last week, but as my body was realising it was no longer pregnant accompanied by some severe pain, I feel justified in cutting myself some slack.

2. Stand up straight - Grade A

It's hard but I've been checking.  I sense I may need to retain this as a goal for 6 months continuously before it really becomes my natural posture.

A suggestion I've gotten from my chiropractor: work on building core strength, and for starters that can be: over the course of the day, while sitting, tighten the muscles in your abs and backside. It should force you into a more upright position and strengthen the muscles a little at the same time.

Obviously, I'm no chiropractor and the same thing isn't always good for everyone, but I can't see how that one could hurt. :)

As for standing up straight - i get how hard this goal is to remember.  I'm trying too.  I also do wall sits during the day and stretches (where i can).

Your goal made me realize that my posture is MUCH better since I started using a standing desk.  I love the idea of doing wall sits periodically during the day.  I'll have to try that out.

*tries suggestion and finds self sitting considerably straighter"

Thanks for passing this on, Draco - I'll try to remember it while at work.  I have a terrible sitting posture! (especially while eating)

Hey Eirlys, those are some great quarterly results!  Go E go!!

Thanks for checking in Hiraedd!  :)

Hi Blaidd!  I've had wall sits on my "should do" list for this challenge, I reckon I should follow your lead and start incorporating them on a daily basis.  Because I have slight heels on my shoes I won't try at work, but while watching the TV at home sounds like a plan! :)

I'm fortunate that I don't have to implement the website coding myself, but I think I'm going to play around anyway so that I can sound/be informed! :)

Your goal made me realize that my posture is MUCH better since I started using a standing desk.  I love the idea of doing wall sits periodically during the day.  I'll have to try that out.

Yay, wall sit gang!  I've heard good things about standing desks!  Have you noticed any other side-benefits to using it?  (I'd wonder if being on your feet all day may help strengthen legs or lose a bit more weight?)

Glad to hear your posture is much improved - it's such an important thing, and our bodies are definitely going to thank/not thank us later in life for getting it right/wrong! :)

Gym, Sunday 29/09/13

Warm-up

2 minutes cross-trainer, Level 7

Cardio

5km treadmill, 30 mins 3 sec

Breakdown: 3km @ 10.5kmph, 0.1km @ 6kmph, 0.9km @ 10.5 kmph, got stitch, went from walking-> jogging the last km

Conclusion

As I had suspected after 4 weeks of no exercise, my endurance has gone to pot.  My body definitely wanted to quit at 4km but I persisted for 5km - it can only get better from here, right?!

Challenge Update

Learning - have now managed to get through 200 of the 500-page Javascript & jQuery book.

Have totally dropped the coursera videos for the last fortnight after I did so well to catch back up to that point - however, that section was all about deductive logic which I already studied at university.  This week, it's about inductive logic, so I should really try to make the effort!

I also installed software on my home computer that will let me play around better with website creation & allow me to experiment with upgrading one of my websites running on an old content management system.

Stand up straight - my back has been hurting less now that I am not carrying so many bags to work every day.  But although I'm checking in on the posture, I don't feel like I'm making as much progress as I'd like.  Possibly more pec stretches needed!

Purify - gave 2 bags of nice stuff to the BHF charity (chosen because of 18ck!)

I have decluttered further this weekend, and have another bag of clothes & handbags that will either go to charity or on ebay.  It's a slow process!

Diet/Fitness - diet hasn't been so great on Fri & Sat & scales reflected that.  I also haven't really got going with the floor exercises 3 times a week yet.

To give everything a kickstart, I plan to up my daily walking on commute (decided to swap trains and take the crowded commute so I can walk through the park, rather than the easy commute that means I walk down a main, congested road - nature FTW!) and I also plan to walk up the steps at work at least once a day.  I work on the 7th floor, so it is quite hard going!

Overall - I thought I had been coping 'well' with recent bad events, but on reflection I'm struggling with a few things.   Concentration & motivation at work, I don't want to socialise at all, I don't want to leave the house at weekends except for the 30 second trip to the gym.  I suspect I'm quite irritable, I feel exhausted most of the time, especially by the end of the week.

The work concentration thing will really decide whether things go haywire or back on the straight and narrow, so I really need to make an effort next week.

All things considered, I would say you have been doing quite well.  Don't let the fact that you are not progressing on some goals divert you from the fact that you are progressing on others.  If some of the goals aren't working, consider changing to something that will work into your current schedule better and do the same thing.

For example, I had the same issue with posture you are stuggling with.  I was developing "Nerd Hunchback," that lovely look where your shoulders are crunched forward and your neck kind of crained forward due to sitting at a computer all day (which I still do at work).  My doctor recommended I try a rowing machine to strengthen my back.  That worked, but I also did it three times a week, which was a time issue, given everything else I was trying to do.  Then I discovered slow motion, high-intensity weight training.  I now work out about twenty minutes per week and am in better shape than ever.  I gained about 40% in strength the first few months I did it, despite already doing aerobics, rowing and once-a-week high-rep, low-weight weight training.  My posture issues disappeared when I got stronger.  If you are interested, I would recommend Body by Science.  Your local library probably has a copy.

Good luck and keep on moving!

*notes name - check with approval :-) *

You're scoring some points with technical learning, I see*. It sounds like you're not really making the progress you'd like to at work & in lifestyle areas though**. Not sure what to suggest really - When I can't concentrate I sometimes get in the zone by coming in early and starting work before everyone else when it's nice and quiet, but given how tired you said you were, that probably doesn't help. The walk through the park might be a good way of clearing your head though. Did you do that today? How did it go?

Bag/posture thing: do you have a backpack? It's not v stylish but a hello a lot better for the posture, I think.

Anyway, this all feels a bit dull so I'll push off now.

Hey, I liked the geekiest spellchecker. Although I see it could sometimes be awk-ward ;)

Still haven't worked out where to fit NFing during the week - lots of late evenings at work (haven't even done a gym :( ) but did manage to install cygwin and start messing around with wordpress. Am at about page 300 of JS book now. Getting to AJAX soon!

Thanks MadScientist for the posture tips, I agree I should get back to strength training as you suggest.

18ck - I only managed the park walk once on Monday, but it was much more plasant and the tube journey there (jubilee) wasn't as bad as I thought either. I have walked the 7 flights of steps up to my floor on 3 days out of 4. Today I made it all the way up without stopping!

Peggy - hi! *hands out more coffee, caramel flavoured* ;)

Well today I had a confidence booster. There's no way I can describe it that doesn't sound like boasting so apols for that. Anyway I got a linkedin message from an internal recruiter working for the world's largest search company asking if I'd be interested in hearing more about a high profile & high visibility role!

I guess I may have to step up getting on top of my game quicker than I had planned. And start learning Python in preference to Javascript!
