Hello NF!  It’s been far too long!  My fault, but I’m going to make a sincere effort not to fail this time.

Here’s the background short version --

I’m 29 years old.  I had a stroke at 28 and it SUCKED.  I got physical therapy and made dietary changes that helped me bounce back and recover from that completely. (YAY for no long term damage!)  I’ve got two kids, 10 and 3, who are my pride and joy.  I’ve got a wonderful wife who loves and supports me.

This site changed my life in November of 2012.  I lost quite a bit of weight, learned about this amazing thing called parkour and committed to a healthy lifestyle.  I felt great about my first challenge and had good momentum.  Started at 206 and got down to 179 lbs via Paleo and exercise.

Had an amazing opportunity to train in Shaolin Kungfu in my second challenge and loved it, but had to quit due to a close friend and his wife passing away unexpectedly, leaving a daughter behind with no job and a house payment and bills that needed to be paid with no one to help.  Enter my family…and a LOT of personal sacrifice, including KungFu.

I tried coming back for a third challenge in April and never really got started.  Again life stepped in and I made other things priorities.  (We’re never too busy, we just prioritize something over getting fit or eating right.)  FAIL-sauce on my part.

So yeah…that’s me and a quick synopsis of my journey on here thus far.

Now you’re probably saying to yourself, “Well what makes this time different?â€

That’s a very valid question, so I’m going to give you a very valid answer. “Greed.†

Yeah, I know, I know…greed is bad right?  Well, not all the time.

I’m greedy for a longer life.  I’m greedy for more time with my family.  I’m greedy to feel better and have more energy.  So yeah, I’m greedy…I want more!

And yeah, I’m greedy in the traditional sense too…there is money involved… a contest at work.  So yeah, no false pre-tenses, no bs, let’s do this.

The contest is whoever loses the most body fat %  by December 20th, 2013 wins $1100.00.  So yeah…that’s a LOT of money.  That’s plenty of money to add a nice new toy (or several) to my new man cave. (I recently finished my basement.)  I’m at 26.5% at 196lbs, so I’ll need a pretty significant drop to win this thing.  Either way, I’m getting healthier, which feeds into the other greed I listed above.  Win-Win even if I lose and don’t have the most BF% lost.

So, here we go…

  1.  Drink Water and ONLY water!!! – Short and sweet. No soda and no beer.
  2. Eat clean! Paleo only! – Clean eating to power strong exercise!
  3. Exercise!  - Starting Convict conditioning, running with Zombie 5k, and doing Parkour!
  4. Life Goal: Get promoted or get a new job! – Things are in flux at work. Lots of position shifts…but none of the people that need to go are being moved….i.e. it’s getting rather toxic.

I’m up for a promotion for a job that I am over qualified for and have been doing the work of since I got into my current position. If I don’t get it, I’m looking for a new position where I’m getting paid what I’m worth and valued.Toxic workplace = bad news bears.

So, that’s it.  Hope you’ll join me on my journey.  There will be lots of fun along the way.

Attached are two pictures, one of my lunch today and one of me (note: I’m not the green leafy one)

Oh yes, and one more thing... I'm Batman!

A stroke at any age, especially 28, is absolutely terrifying.  Glad to hear that you made it through it though with flying colors.

I like your goals and will be here to cheer you on as you blow away the competition at work and get that $1,100.

One question - when you say "only water" does that mean no tea.  I've heard that tea, especially green tea, is good for weight loss.  Plus it'll give you the option of a variety of fun tastes to make not drinking sugary drinks easier.

Hey Time!

Thanks for the support!  It's greatly appreciated!

Tea is DEFINITELY on the list. :-)

I do better in my head with absolutes when it comes to things like that, hence the "Only Water" thing, but yeah, tons of fun tastes!  Had Raspberry black tea last night...which was...interesting.  Not a huge Raspberry guy, but not bad nonetheless.

Anything you'd recommend?

Here's the update:

Got home late last night and my wife and my kids are all sick. :-(   Rough week it's been.  I'm tired and exhausted and there's a bunch of pre-packaged frozen pizzas, etc. staring me in the face...easy way out...but quickly I was reminded of what I'm striving for here and proceeded to break out fresh veggies and chicken and get to work.

I ended up making some fajita style peppers and onions, grabbed some chicken breast and seasoned it with thyme, oregano, black pepper and threw them on the grill.  I tossed a couple of halved peaches on there as well towards the end for a Paleo friendly dessert.  (Grilled peaches taste AWESOME!)  I fed the wife and kids and they LOVED it.  Positive reinforcement for me in a big way, especially since my kids are picky.  I made so much, I'm eating some of it now for lunch today. Had an apple for breakfast.  So far, so good.

Quick goals update so far:

  1.  Drink Water and ONLY water!!!  -  So far, so good.  Tea and Water are keeping me hydrated like crazy.  I can't believe how much I'm drinking.  I must've been SO dehydrated!
  2. Eat clean! Paleo only! – So far, so good.  Cooked en masse last night to make sure I had lunch today.  I think I can make a trend of this and it will make it much easier to stay paleo.
  3. Exercise!  - Running around the house cleaning up and taking the stairs about a thousand times last night has to count for something...still, no excuses!  I'll workout tonight!
  4. Life Goal: Get promoted or get a new job! – Things are getting worse and worse at the office.  I'm trying to hold out for change, but wow, it's getting hard to deal with some of this stuff.  Trying not to stress over it and stay positive!

More tonight/tomorrow!

Stay classy Nerd Fitness!

Wow! I love your goals and your motivation and just wow! I'm looking forward to watching you win that $1100 :D

Thanks Bekah! :nevreness: I appreciate you dropping in and hope you'll continue to check in and say hello!

Quick Saturday update - Made more Fajita Veggies (I'm really digging them!) and some more chicken breast for lunch and I've got some pulled pork (got it from my butcher!) with no sauce going... :-)

Had veggie omlet with fajita veggies and eggs (This local Farmshare has been a lifesaver so far!) for breakfast.  Today's been busy with lots of cleaning.  Wife and kiddos are still under the weather, so I'm running around like crazy cooking, cleaning, with multiple timers going off, and trying to catch up on digitizing my DVD/Blu-Ray collection and reimaging a laptop for my daughter to play with!  :onthego:

Didn't weigh myself this morning, but we'll check in tomorrow and see where we're at.

Also, got some GIANT alcohol bottles for display in my man cave from a buddy who works as a liquor/alcohol stocker for an alcohol distributor.  I can't believe how big this Jack Daniels bottle is!  Pics and more to come tonight or tomorrow!

Oh!  I also went for a run this morning and forgot it was "Neighborhood Annual Garage Sale day!"  I had my wallet with me and after running hit a few to check out what was for sale.  Got a Thomas the Tank Engine book for my 3 yr. old son and a copy of Street Fighter X Tekken for the Xbox 360 for 3$!  Not a bad way to start my morning off!

Never give up, never surrender NF!

Thanks Bekah! I was BUSY but I got a ton of stuff done and felt pretty darn productive! And you're right, if they were full, I wouldn't be running ANYWHERE! LOL! :nevreness:

Sounds like you had a productive and worthwhile Saturday.  I also love fajitas and really need to learn how to make some at home.  Keep up the healthy (and tasty) eating

Most definitely felt that way Time! Fajitas are pretty easy to do.  I've been sticking with the veggies since I'm avoiding bread and all things related (GOGO PALEO!) though I may whip up some grass-fed beef in lime juice to go along with the veggies. :-)

Quick update this morning!

Well, it was bound to happen eventually with the wife and kids being sick....I've finally gotten hit.  It's nothing major, but I woke up a little congested and slightly more tired than I should've, especially since I had a full night of rest.  So I'm sick....but, I"m certainly not going to let that stop me.  Increasing my water intake even moreso today.  Hydration is key!  I'll also try and get a nap in this afternoon, time permitting, as the extra sleep should help give my body more of a chance to fight this thing off...but still, there's GOOD news! :-)

First off, I weighed in this morning at 192lbs!  Down 4 in just a few days!  THIS is one of the reasons I love Paleo and clean eating (and drinking) so much!  Just encouraging to keep going!

Secondly, my 3 year old is feeling much better and slept in his own bed in his own room through the entire night by himself for the first time!  This means (Fingers crossed!!!) I should be getting back to normal amounts of sleep again (8 hours!) instead of the 5-6 hours I have been getting because he kept waking up for something.  We shall see, but it was nice not getting kicked by little feet for an evening.

I'm still digitizing my blu-ray and dvd collection (this will take a while, but I'm determined to get this done over the course of the next few weeks...so we shall see.

Last night was good, I wasn't hungry, so I only ate an apple for dinner.  Listening to my body is one of the main things I've learned to do throughout my previous challenges and it's definitely served me well in the past, no reason not to think it won't now.  I rewarded myself for taking care of the family and working so hard this week with some GTA V time on the PS3.  I've gotten to the part where I've just unlocked Michael for any of you who are playing it and are curious.  So far, I'm enjoying it.  Los Santos is SO big!

Anyways, today will be taking it easy for the most part.  I've got to kick this sickness junk ASAP.  Time to go make some eggs and veggies for breakfast!

More to follow!

So this works for me to help me get over bugs quicker.  To preface this, I am not one who believes in the majority of the nontraditional, herbal remedy stuff (I am dating a doctor), but this one seems to have a enough analysis by the medical field to warrant optimism as to its effectiveness.  Warning, this tastes bad (though if you drink it enough, you will get used to it surprisingly)

- Heat up a cup of a water to the same temperature you would for tea.

- Add in 1/4 teaspoon Tumeric powder (great for the immune system)

- Add in 1/2 teaspoon Ginger powder (good for stomach aches, general pains, and improves the flavor of this)

- Add in a couple squeezes of lemon juice (Victim C)

- Add in honey to taste (good for sore throats, improves taste)

- Mix!

Hey Fear, good luck for this challenge and gratz for not succumbing to the easy pizzas! Cooking when we are exhausted is difficult, but be sure that what you cooked was better for your health and your family health than all the pizzas in your fridge! Good job, as a manic cooker, I'm super proud!

Thanks Bekah!  I had a LONG sit down with my group manager and basically explained my point of view, everything that I had been doing well above and beyond the requirements of my position, and that frankly, I wasn't feeling appreciated or valued.  She said that had a lot to do with her and her approach to management for the last year and that she was sincerely sorry.  She has been going through some rough times herself, and her management had slipped.  She was aware of the hard work I was doing and was very proud of me and my accomplishments (managers take note, all your workers really want is to be valued, listened to, and appreciated...do this and they'll work their asses off for you come hell or high water...) and she told me as much.  She even went so far as to tell me that I was inspiring her to change her management style in a positive manner and to try and be a better manager. (I was a manager in my position prior to this.  My old team STILL talks to me daily about issues they're encountering for ideas and we still go out to lunch on a regular basis and just keep in touch.)  That was high praise and a VERY appreciated comment.

I asked her what else I needed to do to move up to Technical Specialist (Next position up) from Senior Analyst (where I am now) and she said nothing.  She then brought out the paperwork for my promotion and signed off on it right in front of me!  /SHOCKED /THRILLED!

It'll take HR anywhere from 4-8 weeks to finalize it and for me to get the raise and the new badge with my new title, but...I got it.  My efforts weren't ignored...rather, quite the opposite. I didn't know that until my manager started having a VERY transparent conversation with me though, so she recognizes now that she needs to be more open with me on how she feels I'm doing so that I know where I stand.  I don't need micromanagement compliments, but an attaboy every now and again goes a LONG way.

So yeah, I'm happy and my Life Goal for this challenge is COMPLETED! :-)

Great that you're back!  Curious, how are you measuring you body fat?  Seen a lot of discussions about various methods on people's pages.

Thank you Croman!  I'm not measuring my body fat, actually...I know, I know.. how Chaossin of me. ;-)

The guy running the contest is using a weird gadget that you hold with both hands and it shoots an electrical impulse through your body and measures it that way.  I'm planning on weighing in and checking my BF tomorrow to see where I'm at one week in.

I'll update when I do!

Also, some pictures to put things in perspective.

Almost two years ago, I was overweight and had a stroke due to potassium levels dropping.  Attached are two pictures.  My before is before the stroke and the weight loss I've experienced thus far. (100+ lbs, some of which was largely due to Nerd Fitness! Paleo and making exercising fun, b/c I'm a geek!) The after is about a month ago.

Still got about 30lbs to lose.  Once I do that, I'll post in the woot room. :-)

A big congratulations on the successful one-on-one with your manager leading to a promotion! That is a hell of way to start a challenge by checking off the life goal.  And also that is some amazing progress you have had so far with getting healthier.  I have no doubt that you'll continue working hard and get that remaining 30 pounds off in no time.

Thank you VERY much Time!  It definitely wasn't the plan to cross this one off so early on the list, but when I got the opportunity to sit down with her, I figured, "What the hell, why not be honest?"

Thank you very much for the kind words about my progress, I sincerely appreciate that.  It's been a long journey over 2 years, but I'm getting there.  I also very much appreciate the vote of confidence in my ability to attain my goal weight.  I haven't weighed that since high school, 11 years ago.

I was in the best shape of my life, hell, I had abs that I could actually see! LOL!  I was doing rugby, football (wide receiver), fencing, martial arts (Shorin-ryu), choir(sang bass), band (Played saxophone and guitar), student government (treasurer) and theater (Far too many shows to mention -- Grease, Hamlet, West Side Story, Romeo and Juliet were some of my favorites).

Anyways, enough waxing nostalgic.  This year I'll be 30 and I'll be damned if I'm not almost at or at my goal weight by then.  (December 17, three days before weigh in.)  I'm also going to the Philippines for a month in Feb. 2014, and I'll be spending plenty of time on beaches with my shirt off, so vanity has a fair amount to do with it as well.  I want to look good in photos! ;-D

Ah well, more later!
