Kibcy: Stop complaining, start living

Siferiax

Recommended Posts

Yes I know I said I was leaving. I suck at doing what I say I will. As evident in the fact I'm a lazy couch potato who eats chocolate.

So my goal this... month... because I'm coming into this challenge way late. And I really don't even want to do a challenge... but I can't help myself. I miss having a challenge thread. Even if I started a new battle log... SUE ME FOR BEING INCONSISTENT!

Anyway, my goal is... to stop complaining and to start living.

That's it.

There's nothing wrong with my life, it's just life.

There's nothing wrong with me, I'm just me.

Therefore, whether I take action toward a healthier life... is kind of irrellavant at this point.

I'm sorta drifting out at sea. So any kind of action toward taking the helm and making a life worth living, would be nice.

Let's fail another challenge!

More details coming up.

Not sure what details I was aiming for when I posted this just before lunch.

Either way...

I've been reading The Happiness Trap, and I'm very much liking the concept. It's based on ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy) and I'm really starting to like the principles.

I absolutely suck at it though. But that will change with consistent practice. (I'm not consistent with anything in my life except going to work... so there's that)

In SuperBetter I defined a couple of quests:

Is this thought helpful?

Description: When considering a thought it's not important whether it is true/false/positive/negative. The only thing that matters is whether it is helpful in making you take action to create the life you want. So ask yourself whether the thought you're having is helpful or not. If it is, listen to it and use it. If it's not, defuse it.

Schedule: Every day per week for 1 week (7 instances)

Practice thought defusing

Description: Practice thought defusing 10 times a day for a week.

Schedule: Every day per week for 1 week (7 instances)

Reduce sugar 1

Description: To feel more energized and healthy, reduce sugar. To start: quit vending machine snacks. It's not worth the money. The positive last 5 seconds, the negative lasts hours.

Schedule: 5 times a week for 4 weeks (20 instances)

Eat dinner

Description: Instead of snacks, make something. Even if it's just heating up some pre made meat or a jar of vegetables.

Schedule: One time only

I need to learn more about ACT, starting with reading The Happiness Trap.  You always inspire me to read things that are useful in understanding myself.

I especially love your Eat dinner goal.  Even the smallest step in the right direction is progress.

Yay, Kibcy is back :)  :) Love your goals. That books sounds very good and practical. I love that question, "Is this thought helpful" Do they give tips on how to defuse negative thoughts. Sometimes I get caught in a negative or worry loop and I know it isn't hepful but I struggle with defusing it. The more I tell myself to think of something else that more I think of the worry thought

YES yes they do.

And what you're doing is definitely not how to do it :D

Basically trying to get rid of the thought or fight the thought is only going to make things worse. As you apparently already experienced.

ACT stands for acceptance and commitment therapy. And that's exactly it.

Accept your thoughts, don't fight them or try get rid of them.

Try this:

Think of a thought you might say to yourself. Like I am x. (an idiot, stupid, defective, whatever)

Think about that really hard, till you totally believe it.

Now take the same thought, but put "I'm having the thought that..." in front of it.

So like I'm having the thought that I am x.

By seeing the thought for what it is, just a bunch of words, it will loose power.

You can go a step further even: I notice I'm having the thought that I am x.

Another very simple technique would be to simple say "Thanks mind". Not sarcastic or anything, but genuinely.

The book offers up a ton of examples for defusing thoughts, images and emotions.

The idea is to accept that they are there and then take action toward the life you want.

Hope that gives you some idea of what the book is about :)

Okay so... it's been a hefty few days.

For those who don't know, I have social anxiety. So imagine going to a wedding party where you know nearly nobody (4 people aside from the newly weds, of which 2 were my parents).

Yeah it started out with me in a corner crying and unable to keep cool.

It wasn't until I could focus on something (I had responsibilities at the party), that I could relax.

And then I also found a place near the DJ to sit, which was a good place as I could watch, without feeling overwhelmed by the amount of people attending the party.

So I'm still breathing, so I survived that, haha.

I could enjoy myself after calming down and getting a handle on my anxiety.

In other fabulous news, I finally used my crock pot. And it was a failure. BUT I know what I did wrong, so the failure wasn't bad, but instead I can do better next time! (less water!)

So Saturday instead of crock pot dinner it was buns with chocolate.

Sunday I ate pizza with my parents. Not a fan of pizza, though the one I had is probably one of the few pizzas I like.

(think the BBQ whatever one from pizza hut, that would be pretty close I think. Also that's also one I like.)

Yesterday was... less fabulous.

I stayed late at work, and ate 2 stroopwafels. Then I went to Ikea and got a hot-dog there.

New day! New chances!

In terms of exercise I've walked 6km on Sunday and was on my stationary bike for 18 min on Saturday.

I don't quite have the "exercise" mind going, so I'm not doing anything impressive.

Glad to hear that you got control of things at the wedding.  What is a stroopwafel?

As far as the exercise goes, that's awesome!  Great job !  It's not about doing anything impressive, quite the contrary, it's just about doing something!  You were active, you took the initiative and you exercised!  That's awesome! I'm proud of you! Keep it up!

Wikipedia is much better at it than I am. Plus it has pictures.

Not much to tell. I'm trying to do better at life, but I'm often very tired and not quite "there" with my head.

I'm kind of afraid I'm slowly turning into a zombie! jk.

I'm really awaiting my order of a Thermos container that keeps food hot/cold.

And I would've ordered a Dutch slow cooker cookbook, if I didn't get an error when trying to pay. So yeah the order got canceled.

But who knew there were Dutch slow cooker cookbooks! I seriously can't grasp the English ones I have, so I decided to look for ones in my own language :)

I walked 10km yesterday. Been on my stationary bike here and there. Was a busy week with eating out and visiting people.

I'm mostly posting in my battle log and kind of forgetting about this challenge. Mostly because my battle log doesn't have a "time limit".

This challenge is going to hell I suppose.

I'm much more comfortable with the thought of an ongoing battle log I think.

Because I don't have to rethink my goals, and make a new log, every 6 weeks.
