Nuribaby
I have a question! This may be better suited to the diet forums but I want to hear a scouty opinion. My favorite thing is Cycling, and this challenge I'll be adding in some lifting to supplement that. (Starting Strength, if anyone needs to know!) I've been eating at a deficit and that's been working out really well for me - especially in long ride days, because then I get to eat back a lot of those calories My main goal with lifting is mostly to keep my upper body strong, since my legs are doing just fine. However, I'm hearing from warrior types that I can't really lift on a deficit, that I should bulk and then cut... But BAH don't want to! I'm not looking for massive gains, I just don't want to be neglecting my core and upper body. So what do you guys think? Can I keep my deficit and still lift, understanding that my gains will be slower? Or am I setting myself up for failure? Thanks! If you are trying to build muscle, you're going to want some protein in your diet. Beyond that, because you are not trying to become a monster lifter, you might not need to follow the advice from lifters to the T. If you like eating at a certain calorie level, I would recommend that you keep doing that if it's working for you. That's my opinion, anyway. ApfelStrudi
Question!I know lots of you run cross/trails - I've got a shoe question. What kind of shoe do you use for it? I usually run with minimalistic shoes (adidas adipure gazelle to be precise). Now, those were pretty expensive and I don't want to ruin them running through snow and mud.But what's my real erason for worry: They have just about no grip. I actually fell flat on my face the other day running outside when it was raining because it got so slippery. So, all your traily runners! Any suggestions for a type of shoe to use? Can I keep my deficit and still lift, understanding that my gains will be slower? Or am I setting myself up for failure?Thanks!Soon-to-be ex-fat person At this stage you just want to focus on your weight loss, since this is your main goal. When you're an advanced powerlifter you can think about bulking/cutting cycles and gains and so forth, but right now focus on weight loss. This will make life easy for you. To lose weight, my advice is to eat paleo and eat a deficit (this will be easy on paleo because you want be hungry), and add some strength training - "starting strength" is good. Avoid too much cardio - it's no good especially when you're a woman. Messes up your cortisol, which will hinder weight loss, and your sleep and what-not and you will be hungry, and end up eating to much. So for now, focus on weight loss and lifting, and add a little bike ride if you really want to. Just be careful not to overexert yourself, and not to eat too much after those cardio days. Sorry, this is a bit of a non-scoutish advice. But you said you wanted an opinion. Once you have lost all the weight you wanted to lose, you can do any sports you like for as long as you like. But if you want my advice, focus on weight loss first with a tried-and-tested method (paleo + strength). Everything else can come later. If you want to do proper fell running or "off-trail" running, people recommend inov-8. They also have a minimal shoe, the "bare grip", which is supposedly quite good.If you just splash around in the mud a lot and run on trails, you just need a bit of grip and don't need cleats or spikes. I'm using the merrel trail glove, that works just fine. Level 3 Human Assassin STR 6 DEX 7 STA 8 CON 1 WIS 9 CHA 3 challenges 1 2 3 daily battle log 6 months goals Link to comment
