The Waldorf one is freaking awesome. The whole family loves it except for my oldest son who hates everything that isn't covered in sugar.

Oh sweeeet! I'll have to try it.

You are seriously inspiring me to get a copy of Well Fed once we're not utterly broke.

In the meantime, since you're working on cooking stuff, one of our go-to recipes for batch cooking is this recipe for carnitas. We usually use fresh jalapenos instead of chipotle peppers, and sometimes we use country-style ribs instead of the boston butt roast if they're cheaper. The great thing is that one or the other is usually on sale, so the meat is always under $2/lb, which is great for our brokeness. This is delicious when fresh, delicious when reheated, and delicious cold on a salad, or just to nom out of the container. It's just awesome all around. One Thanksgiving Husband of Doom made it for a pre-Thanksgiving meal and I woke up in the middle of the night to find my siblings and cousins standing around eating it cold out off of the pan. It's that good. (It's even better with fresh bone broth made in the crock-pot, if you're so inclined).

Ah! Yes! I'm glad. It's a good book.

Thanks for the recipe... looks delicious. I've been looking for ideas for Thanksgiving and Christmas. That might fit the bill!!!

Woo!  Great post!!  As always, you're totally kicking ass and it's great to see you on top again! :D

Thank you so much Catspaw. :)

Crohn's Disease sucks. =(

I'm a proponent of avoiding medication when you can, but I will urge you to proceed with caution. Definitely have a conversation with a few doctors (I recommend a few because some may scoff at you). Where I am there is a College of Osteopathic Medicine. They are absolutely real doctors who take the same medical school classes, but they also learn about alternative methods. Do some research and see if you can find a D.O. They may be able to help you better than an M.D.

I seem to recall seeing something in your Facebook feed about the difference all this is making for you. And I'm so glad to hear it. I really am. You're an awesome dude, and for all the hard work and all that you've been through, it's good to see things turning up the way you want them to.

Remember: fast food is not real food. It's pee cake. Tell yourself that every time you have a craving, and I swear, you won't even be hungry anymore.

Now to get to Krav tomorrow so that we don't have to mock you after such an awesome post. :D

Heh, I've got just the article to introduce you to my blog, Loren: How to Boil Water  (It's not as dorky as it sounds.)  :friendly_wink:    You can use sweet potatoes in the stew recipe, if you try it, so it will be Paleo. (P.S. Be forewarned that many of the recipes on my blog are not Paleo. I write for a more generic audience. However, they will be becoming more Paleo in the future as I am eating more that way myself.) If you need help converting recipes to Paleo, I can help with that, too. I have to convert recipes a lot to adapt them to locally grown foods.

A crockpot is your friend if you need to keep your food costs down. You can buy the cheaper (tougher) cuts of meat, cook them in a crockpot, and have juicy tender results. Besides, it's nice to come home after a long day to the smell of dinner ready to eat. Crockpots are very forgiving about cooking time when you use the low heat setting. You can also get them with timers so they will shut off the cooking heat at the proper time and then switch to a "keep warm" temperature. That way you don't have to worry about being home at the exact right time to shut them off. Crockpots are not very expensive, either. You can get a good one for $30 or less (if you don't already have one). I'd suggest getting a fairly large one. You can always freeze leftovers to eat some day when you don't feel like cooking.

I agree with afflictionreckoning. Osteopaths are medical doctors with years more training. I've also gotten the best nutrition and metabolism help from a naturopath. Again, they have regular medical training, plus more years of things like nutrition. Check around. Different naturopaths have different treatment specialties. As I posted earlier, mine saved my gall bladder. My mother had gall bladder attacks for a few years, too, at about my age, and they ended up surgically removing hers. None of her doctors knew about apple cider vinegar, I guess. In fact, they pretty much described gall bladder attacks as having a mysterious origin. My naturopath knew exactly what was causing it and how to eliminate the problem at its source very simply.

Anyway, a second opinion from a different perspective can sometimes be illuminating.

Wonderful post today, and your bonsai tree looks very happy and contented! Is it a jade plant?

It does.

What's a D.O.? Also my doc is supportive of my diet, but I'm not sure I could find a doctor who would support my decisions of eventually going off Remicade... nor am I sure I want to pay to keep going to different doctors until I find one. Would love more info though if you want to start a PM about it all.

Day 1

11/11/13

  • Defend
    • No Krav. I woke up in time and got ready to go... but was delivered some frustrating news right before I left. Not really an excuse but at that point I just didn't go.
    • I also didn't check to see if they were open either, so it may have been fruitless had I gone anyway.
    • Side note: I think this is revealing a weakness of mine which is becoming too frustrated too fast and letting it consume me and ruining my plans.
  • Nourish
    • No new recipe yet.
    • Wednesday I'm going to Sprouts to stock up. :)
  • Reinforce
    • I did read more tonight... even read some off to chat.
  • Unlife
    • Not yet!
  • Other
    • Decided to delete MyFitnessPal altogether again. It's a hassle to use if I am making all of my own food. I'd rather just cook and eat real food when I feel like it and not be concerned with calories (though, yes, I need to make sure I am eating enough).
    • Thanks to all of those who actually read the wall of text yesterday. I appreciate that very much.

Wholetexalypse Day 12

11/11/13

  • Food:
    • More choc. chili.
    • More tuna salad.
    • 2 bananas.
    • 2 kiwis.
    • 2 eggs.
    • And finally got my natural calm!!!
  • No spending.
  • Feeling good physically.
  • 70 days left!!!

I digress....outstanding job so far on your challenge, I don't know how you had the will power to resist In-N-Out....(even if it is not real food, it's super tasty).

I hear you on how frustrating news can make you not want to do something. But this is a golden opportunity! Frustrating news should be even more reason to go--it gives you a chance to work it out physically. We had some bad news about a colleague yesterday, and working out was therapeautic.

p.s. I too, am a smoothie addict and am trying to stay away from them this challenge. I need to actually chew food. It's going to be hard.

I totally almost missed your post!

Okay, I'll check out the link! I trust you. ;) Right now I am not doing a lot of coverting to paleo. I'm trying to stick to safe recipes and safe links (as to not spark cravings). And since my goal is to make Well Fed 1 or 2 specific recipes, I haven't made much else. But I have saved the link. ;)

Yes, I know it is. I don't have one anymore. Hoping to get a crockpiot int he next couple months. Been borrowing one lately.

I have trouble trusting anyone that doesn't agree with my view on nutrition and health. I guess I'd like to find one who supports paleo-like lifestyles of nutrition. But otherwise I agree.

Thank you very much. Yes, Mr. Miyagi is a jade bonsai. They don't need a ton of sun and they stay alive easily.

Good to see you making progress! Starting to see change's with chron's is amazing!

And yes, I think I need to make that tuna salad.... :)

Thanks man! :)

Yes! It's delicious.

Chocolate... chilli... *dribble* :D RECIPE? PLEASE?

And hope the news wasnt too bad - or at least something with an ass you can kick, heh.

Hahahaha. It's right here.

In fact, if you google Chocolate Chili now, hers comes up first (at least in the US).

Finally caught up. I know a little girl with chrones and I know how tough that is. I admire you for working to make yourself better and not just using it as an excuse. Also, looks like you had a great day yesterday!

Aww thanks for catching up! I appreciate the kind words. I did have a good day, despite all sorts of shit. Thank you. :)

Hahahaha. I'm sorry you don't have anything near you.

To be honest, and I'll tell anyone this, but I don't have much willpower. But when I decided to do something and I want it bad enough, I don't let anything stop me.

Thanks man. :)

Usually I do, but this was on the depressing end of frustrating. But Krav Maga is still rather new to me, so therefore not therapeautic. Biking is my therapy right now.

I have read, I have absorbed and I am so proud of you! I love seeing you back in your bright place :) I can feel the energy beaming off of you from here.

Thanks so much Haikoo. ;)

I deal with this quiet a bit with dance class- where my bad attitude can really spoil attitude in the room and the learning environment. Sometimes you need to listen to that.  Sometimes you need to go- sometimes you need to stay.  I have stayed home because I was running late- and it was making me RAGE.  So instead of driving 30 minutes away- angry- then showing up late- and possibly setting myself up for epic failure- and frustration and difficult situation for my teacher- I just stay home and do something else- on my own.

It's definitely a learning process- and it's HARD.  hugs!

Don't you know that going out and nut-punching things is a great way to deal with frustration? And Krav is supposed to be the nut-punchingest of them all. You know better than that.

Nut punching things is the best way to release frustration. Well... besides destroying something with a large hammer...

  • Switching to natural.
    • This one I am not sure if I am doing for my health or peace of mind. Are "all natural" products that much better for us? I have no idea, but I have thrown out all of my old soaps, toothpaste, shampoo, etc. in lieu of all natural versions.
    • Maybe it's just peace of mind and it really doesn't make a difference if I use "all natural" products or not. But either way, I feel better mentally that I am using them. Plus, I am supporting the smaller businesses instead this way.

Nice! I switched my kids to the all natural body washes, shampoos, bug spray, sun screen, all that stuff. California Baby makes awesome product... Not just for babies ;P It smells much better than the other stuff too!
