LoD's Post-Baby Challenge

Recommended Posts

Thank you for the draft of your birthing story! There was a lot in there I really didn't know so it's great that I got to learn something and share a tiny bit in your experience.

I'm so happy you got to have a natural birth the way you wanted to. I'm also pleased as punch you're back on the horse and ready for another challenge with goals I think look pretty smart. I don't have kids, let alone a newborn, so

I can't exactly understand if they're realistic.

Hey girl... of course I'm subbed... it could be that he doesn't have an awesome latch... having someone irl to check it is nice.... I'm a peer consultant through wic... see your local consultant... either through the wic office or your midwife/hospital.... they won't starve and one or two bottles isn't going to kill your nursing relationship... just do as much as you can and it's the best that you can.... and don't worry about the rest... I'll share a recipe with you on Facebook (because I don't have it here and I'm on my phone blah blah ;) lol) I'll be in your state in a couple weeks and I'll def come see you! But you should get advice before then :) I love ya girl and you will do awesome

Please

It's not magic and it doesnt come magically w vaginal births. Nope.

Call your midwife. Call your doc.

Pardon typos, I'm eating jerky.

I know that...but for some reason I have to relearn it each time. Not sure why. I'm gonna call the lac consultant on Monday; hopefully she'll be over her cold by then.

What an adorable baby! Congrats :)

I'm so inspired that you are getting back on the wagon right after having a baby. That is so awesome!

I look forward to seeing your success over the next few weeks :)

Yeah, we had some trouble with latch at first, but I did have the hospital lactation consultant come in and she said his latch looked good (of course, when I got concerned and called for her, by the time she got there, he had latched like a pro. He seems to have a little bit of a lip tie, but K did/does, and that didn't stop her from being an effective nurser. I'm just a very all or nothing kind of person...way too perfectionist for my own good. I will try the cookies; they look delicious. Will need to go get some brewer's yeast, but I think I have everything else.....

Today my CF box was doing WODs for Warriors and I was going crazy from being stuck under a baby 24/7 so I pinky-swore to HoD that I would only walk, since that is all the doctor cleared me for, loaded up baby A, and headed out this morning (bonus: got me out of the house for K's naptime, which usually makes things go way smoother). The rest of them did Armistice. I walked 100m laps with A in the Moby Wrap (for anyone planning to become a parent, or looking to get a gift for new parents, the Moby is worth its weight in gold, especially for those with a colicky baby or one that needs to be held a lot). He stayed asleep the whole time. I got 10 laps in the first 9 minutes, and about 10.5 in the second 9 minutes. Was really tempted to do curb step-ups at least, but I kept my promise.

Then I went to the store. A was awake and hungrily protesting, but I only needed like 4 things from the store, and I didn't know how long he'd want to feed, so I loaded him in the Moby, attached him to the breast, and rearranged my clothes to hide the boob, then went into the store, got my stuff, and got out. I'm like a breastfeeding ninja.

Congrats on the fetal unit!! They are exhausting and frustrating but super fun at times.

The goals are awesome for a new mother...my wife spent a lot of time trying to keep up and it seems like you have a great hold on how to make it through these first couple months!

Congrats!

LoD! What an awesome challenge! Whenever I try to say I'm too busy at work for my challenge, I'll think of you kicking ass while taking care of a newborn baby. CONGRATS! He's beautiful.

Also, my boss and his wife use the Moby and they highly recommend it (just to give everyone a third opinion on the matter).

See! Breastfeeding ninjas really are everywhere :)

Final draft probably won't change much, just add some info about the previous births and the work I did this last pregnancy for context. I think I got most of the stuff for the birth itself.

Thanks!!!!! And yes, the Moby is a must. It's my standard gift for people about to be parents. I've even loaned mine to people at times when I didn't have a baby small enough to need one and couldn't afford to buy them one. It's that awesome.

AWESOME!

Right? It's nice sometimes to be reminded that the Internet can be more than just the world's biggest porn repository.

Day 1:

No nap, but I did get 8 hours (if only barely) last night, so I'm not in too bad of a shape. Was running errands during naptime, which is when I usually nap if I'm going to. Had to pick up my thyroid prescription and a few groceries. Was trying to find ingredients for the lactation cookies, but none of the 3 stores I checked had brewer's yeast. Will have to check the health food store, which will probably charge an arm and a leg, but oh, well. Got my water refills, no walk (unless we count circling the WalMart a couple times trying to find brewer's yeast in various places)

Had to supplement again last night; I really wish there was some rhyme or reason to when he acts like he's starved so I could figure out a cause. He gulped down about 1.5 oz. of formula like he was starving, then refused to take anymore and was still fussy for another hour or so. So I don't know if he was really hungry or just fussy, although he was showing some serious hunger cues. So he probably was. I called the lactation consultant today and left a message when I got no answer, but no response yet. When I spoke to her last week, she had a bad cold and was thinking about going home, so maybe she's still out. I'm just mystified by the randomness of it. Last time was, what Wednesday night? So that's 4 days between the last two (and counting back, I think 4 days again). He has lots of wet and poopy diapers. It's entirely possible that I'm mistaking fussiness for hunger, but both HoD and I are seeing hunger cues. I guess it won't hurt to feed him a little extra if we're wrong, but he does seem to spit up more and more frequently the day after supplementing.

The Bright Side: I had a smooth, complication-free pregnancy, labor, and delivery, and I am bouncing back faster than I could ever have imagined. So much faster that I feel a little wussy for not being back into my workout routine yet. I was wishing I could go do burpees at CF tonight, and I hate burpees. What madness is this?!?!?!? (okay, it helped that they were paired with deadlifts)

as far as the brewers yeast goes, I have a can of the stuff sitting unopened in my cupboard, and nothing to do with it.  If you can't find any I'm more than happy to send it to you.  Otherwise have you thought of fenugreek. I used that for a while and it definitely boosted my supply (though it does make you small like maple syrup - good or bad, you decide).

I have thought of fenugreek, but I thought I'd try the cookies first, since it's an excuse to eat cookies :) I've heard that doing both can lead to an oversupply, but I wouldn't mind smelling like maple syrup. If I can't find brewer's yeast at the health food store, I may take you up on that offer!

Fenugreek for the win!

I haven't had luck with the cookies but I have had luck adding more starches to my paleo diet. I think the cookies do the same thing (add calories) but are probably more fun (in case you run out of cookies-try eating more sweet potatoes or just eating more-I always forget to eat and it really wrecks my supply).
