Turtle 21 dwells in the land of rainbows & unicorns!

Fatigue is starting to get to me and the anxiety of trying to keep my hours between 7 and 9 is stressing me out more than it should.  Thank goodness for Steve's article about sleep yesterday!  I swear that man knows just what to write when I need it most.  Anyways, I found this really neat bedtime calculator where you enter what time you need to wake up and it will give you several options on what time you should go to sleep.  I don't know how legit it is, but I guess it calculates your sleep cycles in 90 minute increments so you don't wake up in the middle of a cycle.

I'm gonna give it a shot.  So for the remainder of the week, and possibly going into next week, I'm gonna switch my focus from trying to sleep a certain amount of hours to utilizing this bedtime calculator to see if using the times suggested helps me to wake up more refreshed and alert.  I'm still going to avoid naps if at all possible.

I've also set up an appointment with a licensed counselor to discuss my anxiety, stress, and depression levels.  It just gets so bad during the winter months and I really think I'll benefit in a big way if I combine all my new habits with professional assistance.

In other, unrelated news, I discovered a tea that tastes just like an orange creamsicle!  Matcha Maker Green Tea by Good Earth. Mmmmm!  No honey or anything needed!  :orange:

I guess that's all for now.  OH!  Except I think my cat is out to derail my meditation efforts.  He seems to mistake meditation time for "it must be snuggle time"!!  He hops up on my lap, walks back and forth, purrs, kneads, tries to suckle the sleeves of my clothing, head butts certain body parts...  If I try to go in another room, he cries and bats at the door.  He's my gentle giant.  At 12 1/2 years old and over 20 pounds of love...I haven't the heart to push him away.  I'll figure something out...

That is a very concrete and smart approach to stressing out over sleep patterns! also yes, avoid naps.

And seeking help is such a sign of strength!

That is one greatlooking cat you have there!!! Mine also likes to join when I meditate or do yoga and I simply try to ignore him and then he gives up.

I have chosen to believe in myself.

Oooh! Thanks for the pointer to the tea! I really like the Good Earth Original - it's one of the few spice teas I like without sweetener. I'll definitely check out the Matcha.

Totally relate to the cat troubles - I have 3, and they seem to take turns claiming the meditation lap time. I figure it's something to focus on other than the itchy ear  :playful:

I love the bedtime calculator.  I punched in some numbers and realize I never hit those intervals -- I'm always trying to wake up in the middle of one.  I'm going to try to switch it up and see if that doesn't help with the morning grogginess. Thanks for the pointer!

And my cat is equally into yoga.  Or, into my attempts at yoga. Or, into me being on the floor and in easy petting/headbutting/etc. space. She's a bit more young and spry, so I just push her away a couple of times (or lots of times) and sooner or later she flops over on the floor nearby and watches.

Well, I let my emotions get the better of me this weekend (over a stupid football game) and ate a little bit more garbage than my system is used to.  Lemme tell ya...my whole body feels like s#&t today.  I can't believe this is how I used to feel on a daily basis!!  My back is in so much pain that I can hardly even sit still at work.  I can't concentrate, I feel moody and miserable.  If that doesn't give me a kick in the head to never let myself eat like that again, then I don't know what!!  I have a week of VERY clean eating ahead of me to fix what I undid this weekend.  Bad Turtle!!

Luckily, I had scheduled a 60 minute relaxation massage for tomorrow afternoon, and then I have vacation from work until December 2nd.  I hope that helps my poor back.  (This massage was a treat to myself for hitting my weight loss goals back in October.  I've had this appointment scheduled for weeks and weeks, and I am so looking forward to it!!)

My grades for last week will be coming later today (possibly tomorrow) because I forgot to grab the notebook I use to keep track of my goals.

Thanks for your complete answer! I was wondering, since I'm doing more exercise than before, if I should eat more "energizing" food, and your Spicy Tuna Cakes sound pretty nice ^^

i'm sorry to hear that you're not feeling very well :/ but you are not a bad turtle! You might have made bad choices, but it is really not the same :)

The relaxation massage sound very nice, and a vacation on top! I hope that you enjoy both, since you deserve it ^^ Have a super nice week!

Thank you very much!  I know I will enjoy - both the vacation and the massage!  :D

Thank you!!  I hope you have a wonderful week yourself.

The Spicy Tuna Cake is not my recipe (but for the life of me, I can't remember the website where I found it otherwise I would just insert the link).  One tweak I made was to add the yogurt to act as a binder.  PS - I don't normally like or eat fish or fish-related things, but I could eat these FOREVER!

SPICY TUNA CAKES

2 cans Albacore tuna

2 eggs

2 T. almond flour

2 T. coconut flour

1 T. lemon juice

2 T. plain Greek yogurt

1 t. mustard

1 t. garlic powder

1 t. onion salt

2 pinches cayenne powder

salt & pepper to taste

olive oil (for cooking)

Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl until well combined.  Form mixture into 4 patties.  Heat oil over medium-high heat and cook patties for about 3 minutes on each side (until golden brown).  Flip carefully to avoid breaking them.  Serve immediately.

Lemme know whatcha think if you try them.  I hope you find them as delicious as I do.   :frog:

Before I get into my grades for the week, I feel like starting where I left off last week:  Monday, my body was feeling pretty awful and I was feeling pretty stressed out because I was having car issues.  I had to drop it off at the shop (and was mostly glad that I even made it there without my vehicle dying in the middle of the street during heavy traffic).  I was panicked without a car (especially since I was planning to travel on Thanksgiving) and had to finagle some rides with my boyfriend and a lady I work with in order to get to work and get back to the shop to pick up my car once it was done.  I was eternally grateful that they were able to fix it before I went on vacation!!

Tuesday, after work, I went to my 60 minute relaxation massage and.  Oh.  My.  God!!  Worth every penny.  It started out about a half hour early with a soak in a hot tub thing with jets and mood lighting, went on to the steam room, then back to the hot tub.  Then, the bed was heated, the lights were dimmed, and there was some amazing meditation-type music on in the background.  The masseuse massaged my back, my arms, my legs, my fingertips, my scalp and face.  All the while, I went into some deep form of meditation where my mind found myself in the mountains, sitting around a campfire with all my favorite people.  It's very hard to explain, but I was so far away it seemed as though my real life was a million years behind me.  I hardly remember getting home afterwards.  Once at home, I vaguely remember showering, but I was asleep by 8:30 pm and slept all the way through till 10:30 am.  I'm thinking 14 hours of sleep does not bode well for my "don't sleep more than 9 hours" goal, but hardly even cared!

Wednesday - Sunday was a blur of peacefulness.  I opted out of spending the holiday with my family, (my boyfriend and I went out of town to spend it with friends), so I got through Thanksgiving with no stress at all and had the best time.  This is huge.  I don't ever remember getting through a Thanksgiving without some form of anxiety.

Now, my grades for the week aren't as high as I would've liked, however - I feel like I accomplished a major personal victory over the Thanksgiving holiday - so I'm fine with them for now.

Grades for Week 3

Meditation = B (Technically it should be a C, but I'm giving myself a B because of the loooong and incredible session I had on Tuesday)

~60 min on Tue & 10 minutes on Sun

Yoga = A

20 min on Mon, Wed, Fri

Sleep = C

Thur, Fri, Sat - between 7-9 hrs

Mon & Tue - 6 1/2 hrs

Wed & Sun - 10+ hours

That sounds like a week of serious win, even if the grades weren't all the way there.  Though I'm fairly tight with my family, we also tend to do Thanksgiving with friends because of how far away we live from the rest of the clan. I'm glad to hear it wasn't an anxious holiday for you, and that they fixed your wheels to get you there. And that massage sounds just awesome!

Just remember that grades are not the whole story :) You felt great, you had peaceful moments, and had a good holiday. I agree with Earlsdottir, it sounds like a week of serious win! I hope that you keep up the motivation and the good vibes throughout next week :)

PS: I tried your Spicy Tuna Cakes! I was wondering why the texture was a bit weird, and after cooking them I realized that I had forgotten the eggs ^^' They were very good anyway, so I'll do them again! (with the eggs this time ^^)

Well I'm sick.  Like...really REALLY sick.  I'm sitting on my couch right now thinking there is a good chance I might die.  Also, I just checked the weather and it is currently -15 degrees F (with the possibility of -30 with the wind chill), but I'm sitting here feeling so over-heated that I'm actually nauseous (I'm seriously contemplating going outside and rolling around in the snow to cool off).  I've been coughing so hard and so much, that my head and spine are probably going to implode, and I've missed quite a bit of work this week (probably more time than I've missed in the past year combined).  And why is it when I'm sick that I want to eat ALL the junk in the world?!  ...Thinking about the reason just made me smile a little:  When I was a kid, my Grandpa always used to bring me a strawberry milk shake and french fries or something equally bad for me and would tell me that was the key to feeling better.  I totally thought that milkshakes where the best damn medicine there was.  I laugh now because dairy is probably the WORST thing to consume when you're sick.  I miss him so much some days...he was the best.   :sentimental:

Blegh.  Alright - enough whining.

-15° F? Jeezas, where are you located? I'm in Canada and the lowest we've had so far is -6° C :o

Also, I will totally attempt to make those tuna cakes.

Haha, right?! I live in Billings, Montana. This morning it was -21F (without the wind chill). It sucks! I do NOT like the cold. This Turtle needs to find a better habitat! :P

P.S. I hope you like the tuna cakes!

-21°F? That sounds like the perfect temperature for a snowball fight! But I guess that you might have to wait until your cold gets better...

No, I'm kidding. I start complaining about the cold when the temperature drops under 15°C (59°F), so I have no idea how you survive with -21°F. However, I do hope that you get better soon :)

My grades are late this week because I am just now starting to feel like a human being again.  I haven't been that sick in YEARS.  I'm just glad I'm on the mend now!

My grades are just okay for last week, but I don't mind.  The thing that gets me more was that I didn't get my other exercise in so great last week.  Those exercises aren't on my goal list for this challenge, but I still missed running!  I can't wait to feel whole again so I can get my butt on the treadmill.  I almost did last night, but thought it would be better to rest a few more days until I feel like myself again.  A note on the sleep goal for last week: While I did score an A, it wasn't real quality sleep because I was up coughing my guts out most nights and I did take some naps when I could.  While I don't really think I should probably be getting an actual A for sleep (because of the naps), I'm giving myself one because my naps were solely health related.  I didn't nap because I was bored or sad or something.

In other great news, I haven't been snacking on any of the Christmas goodies around the office...and lemme tell ya - there are bajillions of goodies all over the place.  I've come up with this great trick to help me:  When I think I want a cookie or fudge or caramel corn or whatever, I tell myself that I can have it only after I eat an apple and a handful of almonds.  If I'm still craving it after my healthy snack, then I will indulge, but so far - I have not even remotely desired the treat after I have my healthy snack!  I'm so proud of myself!  I got on the scale this morning and was even down a couple pounds than from the beginning of the challenge, so I think I'm gonna ace my maintenance goal.  :triumphant:

This may sound a bit corny, but I don't care - I just want to say that I finally feel like I'm discovering who I truly am through Nerd Fitness, the Rebellion threads, and the Women's Academy.  I now know what I do and don't like as far as exercise and activity and I don't feel bad or worthless anymore about not liking or not being good at a certain kind.  I'm ecstatic that I finally have my diet under control and understand nutrition better than I ever have.  It feels great to have days where I eat bad stuff like pizza or pasta or chocolate and not feel the guilt I used to because I just don't do it two days in a row.  I just love this whole community!  You are all the best friends I've never met!

I absolutely could have done a much better job, but I'm very happy with my grades regardless because of how sick I've been during the month of December (I tend to sleep a bajillion times more than usual when I'm ill and can't do a lot of moving when the cold moves into my chest).  I can't wait to get back to running (I haven't done so since the beginning of the month), but I've really done well with Yoga in lieu of running.  My boyfriend bought me an Ultimate Collection, 6 disk, box set of Yoga DVDs for one of my Christmas gifts and I tried one of the sessions this morning, and CAN'T WAIT to get through all the lessons.  I freaking love Yoga!  I have decided that I will start doing Yoga 5 or more days a week and then (once I feel 100% not ill anymore), run two or three times a week.  I also received 2 new Paleo cookbooks as gifts and can't wait to try some new recipes!

Life Quest (Posture) = B

I'm giving myself a B because I tried very hard to be very aware of my posture, but when I got sick - my body ached so bad that it was everything I had to try to sit straight, so I ended up slouching a lot.  Even so, I've received comments from a few people on how straight I've been sitting and I saw a picture of me taken on Thanksgiving when I didn't know a camera was on me, and I was pleasantly surprised at how tall I was standing.  I also think the Yoga has helped to strengthen my back muscles, so it doesn't seem to hurt as much to sit straight as it did the first couple of weeks of the challenge.

Side Quest (Maintenance) = A+

Not only did I not gain any weight at all, I've lost a little more than 4 pounds since the start of the challenge.  When I saw my family yesterday on Christmas Eve, they all carried on about how much weight I'd lost.  It felt great!  I ate just a very tiny amount of Christmas goodies, enough to get my cravings satisfied, but not so much that I felt sick to my stomach.  People are finally starting to accept the new way of eating I've established, so no one sent me home with plates and plates of goodies and cookies.  That feels great too!  Another majorly exciting thing for me is that I have switched to drinking coffee completely black!  I never in a million years thought I would actually like the taste of black coffee, but I can't imagine drinking it any other way now.

Even though I haven't officially joined the Holiday Mini Challenge, I'm working very hard to not use the holidays as an excuse to let everything go to the wayside.  This is the first Christmas that I've actually lost weight instead of gaining, and I'm feeling wonderful.  My mental state seems a bit more settled now as well.  I still have rough days, but I just find my happy place and visit it when I'm feeling emotionally drained or stressed.  Just because it's winter outside, doesn't mean it can't be a warm summer day in the mountains of my mind.   :tranquil:
