KathyD
I've been taking a cardio kickboxing class and the girls there are amazing. They have differing body types: some overweight, many middle of the road, a few super skinny; but they can all whip out 30-40 real pushups, jump rope . . . forever, and beat the stuffing out of their punching bags. My goal is to be able to keep up. 1. Go to kickboxing 2 times a week 10+ times = A, 8-9 times = B, 5-7 times = C, 3-4 times = D, 2- times = F2. Be able to do 35 pushups in a row. I have an app that is supposed to train me to do this if is use it every other day. Right now I can do 10. 30+ pushups = A, 25-30 pushups = B, 20-25 pushups = C, 15-20 pushups = D, 14- pushups = F3. Jump rope for 10 minutes 2 times a week. 10+ times = A, 8-9 times = B, 5-7 times = C, 3-4 times = D, 2- times = F So that's it. My motivation is just to be one of the kickboxing girls. That would be AWESOME. Kathy Level 2 MonkSTR 3 | DEX 1 | STA 1 | CON 1 | WIS 4 | CHA 0 Link to comment

Kishi
Hey there! Had a ninja in the Monks Guild mention that you had some martial arts-style goals. I just had to come on over and see if it's true, and it looks like it is. So, I wanted to humbly invite you to come play with the Monks. Obviously, we're not inviting you to uproot your whole challenge just to be with us. That would be silly. That said, I thought I might offer you a quest to get to know us a little bit better. Completely optional, of course: you have plenty of quests as it is. This is just a little side game for you. Your quest, should you choose to accept it, is to visit the Monk's Guild, and to subscribe to three threads that look similar to yours. Our guild is located here. Like I said, no pressure. If you do the quest, there's nothing saying you can't go play with another guild further down the line. I'll be watching your thread, so if/when you complete this quest, I'll have another one lined up for you. Good luck! KathyD
Thanks, everyone, for the support. This community stuff is pretty cool. Your quest, should you choose to accept it, is to visit the Monk's Guild, and to subscribe to three threads that look similar to yours. Our guild is located here. Done and done. Actually, I've been lurking around the monk guild a lot lately. The threads are so inspiring, but I'm not much of a talker so I rarely comment. I popped over tonight, found three threads I enjoyed and wished the posters luck. Went to kickboxing Monday. I managed to keep up We didn't do pushups and left the jump ropes alone, but there were two minutes of planks that I nailed; and every time the instructor said, "You can make this a jump kick if you want to," I did. I discovered that my jump rope is tied around a tree branch so that my sons use it to climb. I need to buy a new one, it's really tangled up with a soccer pal and another ropey thing. If I want to get it down I'll have to cut it, and its not hurting the tree; they might as well keep it. I think they did this back in June or July and I never noticed because I never use the thing. So, anyway, I pretended to jump rope on Tuesday and Thursday. I jumped for 3 minutes on Tues and skipped for the remaining 7. On Thursday I managed to jump for 4 minutes and skipped for 6. I'm pretty ill tonight - flu symptoms - but I've got my alarm set so I can make it to kickboxing tomorrow. I'm going to wake up, get ready and see if I feel better. Hopefully it's just a quick bug. Cool! I saw you post in those places. It'll help you root for them if you click the 'Follow' button in the upper right corner of the topic. It basically gives you an RSS feed here in the forum, where you can keep up with them. Makes it easier. Anyway, I'm glad to see your kids are getting use out of your jump rope, even if it's not for jumping. They turned it into a different kind of toy, and that's cool. But that means you've gotta get one for yourself. Jumping rope is definitely great for martial artists - not only does it condition, but it also helps develop timing and coordination. It's a fantastic tool, and relatively cheap compared to other things like kettlebells and such. I'm sorry you got the flu symptoms. Training helps with driving those things under, if you can muster the willpower to get over the symptoms and start training. If it's in your stomach, though - if you're nauseous or if there's some other stomach thing going on - then training is actually not good. Just in general. So. you've completed the quest. So here is the next one: we are a community, all of us. And we all like to know each other if we can. The community is extremely helpful as a source of motivation and inspiration. So, as for your next quest: I invite you to post in our community/general chat thread. It doesn't have to be anything ornate or verbose; just drop by and say hello. KathyD
Well, I woke this morning with a soar throat, runny nose and a head ache, but I took a dayquill and went kickboxing anyway. I'm glad that I went. Today we did circuits and one of the seven circuits was to do ten pushups (some of the girls did 15, MAN they're good). I managed the first ten pushups, but on my second circuit I did 5 regular and 5 pushups on my knees. Not a bad day though. I plan on going shopping Monday or Tuesday, and "jump rope" is already on the list. So. you've completed the quest. So here is the next one: we are a community, all of us. I know, it's my own fault, I'm like that, but it might have happened again if you hadn't pointed out how to follow threads and actually got me posting in the monk forum. “Oh, you can’t help that,†said Kishi: “we’re all shy nerds here. Kishi
All right! Quest completed, I see. Time for one last quest. You have burned through all of these, and it's looking great. Now, there is one last way to find community in this place, and it'll bring you across all kinds of different places. This will help you not just with the monks, but with all the other guilds as well. We have a system with the forum where we can create 'tags' for our threads. These tags are basically subjects, if you will, ideas around which we organize our challenges. It's also a way for you to find people who have tags in common with you, and for you to commiserate and inspire one another. Now, I see you have no tags on your thread yet, so your Quest is going to be two-fold. 1: You must create at least three tags; 2: you must post in one person's thread whom your tags turn up for you. This is the final quest. Do this, and you will know just about everything you need to know about not only being in community with us, but about building your own community for yourself. jimmyjames
Hey, I'll be following your 6 week challenge! From another wishful Monk to be good luck! Another cool way to try and increase the number of push ups you can do in a row is when you wake up, have some water, and just try and do one more push up than the day before. Doing stuff like this I got up to about 80 push ups in a row with no rest and about 200 in 10 minutes including rest. This was a fair few years ago, I struggle getting above 40 now. jimmyjames
I tended to do them everyday. With a day off once a week. But it depends on how you feel, perhaps start with a day of rest in between, work it with your training days. I used to train push ups all the time, even doing 20 every time I went to the toilet. Doing all of this does help to increase your maximum push ups, and how often you can do them during the day immyjames the level 2 Human Assassin at heart, training with the Monk STR 2|DEX 1|CON 2|STA 2|WIS 2|CHA 1Current challenge Battlelog: http://rebellion.nerdfitness.com/index.php?/topic/38914-jimmyjames-battle-log/#entry764580 Link to comment
