Starpuck Seeks the Assassins

Survived pre-birthday birthday celebration.     Even dragged my arse to the gym today to get strength work out 3 of 3 for this week in.   I got to bed at 3am last night... o m g.   Hockey game tonight.   A 90 minute drive, and it's gonna be the coldest day of the year so far at a low of 16.  Pull ups were not so shabby today, which was a pleasant surprise.

  • Pull Ups : 3, 4, 4, 3  (14)
  • Dead Bugs : 20e, 10e, 20t
  • Tricep Pushups : 8, 10, 10
  • Squats : 85#-6, 85#-5, 65#-5  (had to save legs for hockey)
  • Turkish Get Ups : 12.5# - 5 each side X 3

Sharknado huh JO?  :D   Ok, definitely will heed the warning on snowballing.

Today - got up, had some Nature Valley granola bars, then did the yard work (in 22 degree weather, awesome.)   Then hit the gym.  Then Outback for what will end up the only big meal of the day.   Salad with 1000 Island (I craved) 6oz sirloin, baked potato (needed some carbies for tonight) and then they offered me a b-day cheese cake, small slice, which I split with friend.   No more food until post hockey.   Bringing a PB&J with for the drive home.     Food for today is fine I think.

Tomorrow - chill and a run maybe.

The game was disappointing! :(    Because we were playing really well, but they got in the most flukey of goals and we lost 1-0.    Also because the refs were omg terrible.    We had a girl on a breakaway, and the other team pulled her down from behind her, and they didn't even call a penalty.     Not even a 2min penalty.  Hell, in the NHL that would have been a full blown penalty shot awarded!   Our coach, at the end of the game, asked them 'What was this your first game to ref?'  And they actually, honestly answered, "Our 3rd."   FAIL.   Also we drove 90 minutes to get there, and out of 15 players and 3 subs, we only had 9 skaters show up.  Seriously.   I get sometimes it's hard to commit to all you want to do, but on a TEAM sport, you can't just join and show up when you feel like it.

That aside, my level of intensity hasn't faltered yet and my teammies continue to notice it.  Which is a nice compliment sure, but the better side effect is that it seems to be encouraging everyone to try to step up to that level of play.   Very cool.

SUMMARY OF WEEK TWO - Seeking the Assassins

Task #1 – Your body is your most vital tool, treat it as such.

  • Track Food (Fitbit) : Tracked 5 of 7 days.  Other two failed out of laziness and a bit of shame.
  • Cook Clean 1X/Week : Cooked dinner Tuesday night.
  • Eat Clean 80/20 : Very bad week eating clean.  I probably had more dirty meals than clean ones.  I'm a dirty girl.  And not in the hot way.

Task #2 – You must train not just for survival, but for success.

  • Strength Training – 3x/week : 3/3 - booya!
  • Cardio Workout (hockey permitted to count) 2x/week : 2 runs, 1 hockey game.  FTW!

Training Side Mission – The Eagle’s View

  • Buildings scaled [5.8]   :  Pullup total [58]   Made up a TON of ground on this one this week.   The pull ups were shabby at first, but the return to consistent routine is improving totals fast.   I had a total of 16 the first week - from 2 workouts.  I had 42 this week, and was able to accomplish 14 in 4 sets by my 3rd work out, when the 1st workout of the week took me 5 sets to get to 14.

Task #3 – Our resources are not unlimited; mind the ledger.

  • Rewrite the budget, again! Done!  No longer tracked.
  • Track budget weekly : Tracked most of 7 days.  Went back just now to throw unremembered items into budget.  Must be better.
  • Create an envelope for unallocated funds (IE impulse purchases) : Done and used!
  • Track EVERY purchase : Got lazy over the weekend.   Lost track on Sat/Sun and then had to play catch up with entering.

[breakdown of results]

  1. My Fun Money folder ended up being used entirely for eating out.  - This.  Again.
  2. My groceries fund was enough for *my* groceries, but I had to throw the dinner I cook clean each week (and share with the housemates) into unplanned expenses. Yup.  Again.
  3. Legitimate whim purchases this week:  3 more shirts (on sale for $6 this week, and ... this is kinda cool.   The two I bought last week were XS and they FIT my width, but ended up being too short after I washed them!  MF'er!   But hey, cool that it was the length that didn't fit, instead of the width.)   Bought a new hair brush.  (Mine looks nasty.) An organizer cubby for gaming groups dice.  Replacement bulbs for car tail lights. Yeah, kind of whimmy this week.
  4. Eating out total $68.00. This needs to be toned down, holy crap on a cracker.
  5. Groceries total, adding in the ingredients for my clean dinner was $93 this week.  Freaking shrimp dinner.  Geez.
  6. Gas budget on target.

Training Side Mission – The Pistol

  • Research local ranges and instructors. Not yet.
  • Check reviews on both. Not yet.
  • Get a quote on class fees, etc. Not yet.
  • Begin setting a budget aside for this project.  Not yet.

Current Weight: 144  (Erg!  Back on the horse.)

So week in review.

WORKOUTS:  VERY happy about the strength workouts and the turn around on the pull ups.   I am really enjoying my dinky little gym as I have, thus far, experienced very nice people willing to smile at each other, interact politely, and be both helpful and encouraging.  (A man saw me trying to lasso my resistance band over a bar I could not reach and came over to help me.    Another man walked out of his way to where I was at a certain exercise in my circuit, to ask if I was done with the squat rack I had not used in probably 5 minutes.  Wow!)    While I miss my outdoor playground workouts, this is keeping me from losing ALL progress on my muscly stuff.  Two runs + hockey?   Very good on the cardio side too.

FOOD:  Not happy with my food.   I watched my fellow gamer snack on an apple at gaming tonight (she just got diagnosed with tons of food allergies and is on the 'very limited diet' part of determining what she can or can't handle.   It made me realize a part of me WANTS to eat healthy almost all the time.   It's the Nay of the Moment that wins out on food battles sometimes.   I need to rewire things.   I need that impulsive, can't be dissuaded version of me to be there for bold adventures, new exercises, and barriers that taunt me to giving up.   I need the SENSIBLE Nay to take control on the food side of things.     This coming week will either be fantastic, or disastrous.    I am off from Wed- Monday.  6 Days where there will be no work stress.  AWESOME.   Downside?  Thanksgiving Thursday, and my actual b-day Friday.   I already know we are going to Claim Jumper for my official fam b-day.  So I need to plan right now, what I'll be doing during the day to account for the indulgence I'll have that night.

BUDGET:  I know I can be better.   Eating out is my biggest issue.   And.   The good and bad thing about this is that this SINGLE nemesis of mine is actually responsible for trying to foil TWO different goals.   Which means, when I can nip this one in the bud, I will have two glorious benefits from one correction.   Boy, should THAT be incentive.

PULLUP GOAL : Very pleased with the regained pace.    I feel like this is doable now.

PISTOL TRAINING:   The downside of having a one and done life quest, is that you tell yourself it's okay to put it off.    Hah, off this week, will do some homework.

Overall, glad I had such awesome greenness in my workouts, or else I'd have felt this past week was a disaster.  Amazing how you can succeed in almost 70% of the goals and still feel like the week sucked.   I think I am due for another batch of pumpkin chili for sure.

Seems like things are going not badly so far. You seem to be having some good realizations related to your food goal, which is the first step to making change, so yay to that!

I'm thinking about trying your envelope idea for my budget, since it seems to be working well for you. Not that I have much budget to work with, but having envelopes full of cash rather than a vague idea of a bank balance might make me a bit more mindful of what I'm spending and when, and make it easier to not get carried away and then have to dip into debt to pay my bills.....

Ok, so over on I-Jo's thread, she and Waldo and AlienJenn were helping me sort out the TDEE business and what to aim for on my calorie plan.   Since I have a Fitbit that I am playing with, and a Polar HRM that I use for all my real exercise outings, I think what I will do is take the TDEE of my stats based on if I were sedentary (to account for my office job) and then manually input my calories burned when I am exercising above and beyond that.  (Which is 5-6x a week.)

I used this site's calculators to determine: a BRM of 1360, and a TDEE of 1632 on a lazy, do nothing but sit, eat, sleep and work day.

My runs typically burn ~350 calories.

My strength workouts range from ~300-450 depending on how long they take and how many squat related motions are going on lol.

Hockey games range from ~650-850 calories burned.

Run days TDEE : ~1982

Strength days TDEE : ~1932-2082

Hockey days TDEE : ~2282-2482

Using those estimates, I will simply plan to eat about 500 calories less than those totals per day.   Which is still quite a bit more than I was actually eating when I was just winging it and trying to eat clean.    (A typical clean day would have amounted to me eating somewhere between 1000-1200 on a 'well behaved day'.)   Which would have explained why I dropped the 20lbs so quickly between April and July then hit a brick wall.   Seems like for the most part, I should try and aim to consume around 1500 calories a day for my goals.   And I can indulge in a post hockey beer or two on hockey days without worry!

Going to try this plan of attack starting this week and running through the rest of the challenge.

Above sounds like a good plan - measured, realistic, and doable.  Way to go!  So how are you tracking your calories?

Sounds like you're doing well on your workouts, and seriously kicking some butt catching up on the pullups.  Nice work!  And sounds like although you're not doing perfectly on some of your goals, what you ARE doing is tracking and measuring your spending and eating out, etc..  This is great progress.  My first week in NF last spring someone told me, "What gets measured gets changed."  And it's true.  Keep it up, Starpuck!

Aw thanks Orc.   That's a great quote ... what gets measured gets changed.  Helps me keep focused that while it may not be ideal yet, it's a work in progress.   I am using the Fitbit website to count calories.    It lets you put in your own food/recipes/nutrition info, and has a decent database of foods already there.    The consumed calories are way easier for me to figure out than the expended lol. ;)

Also got a story-themed update that needs to be let out of the muse's cage, but darn work is being a pickle.

That sounds like a dern good week.

Yes, not too good with food, but there was much celebration! You have to live your life too. What I do sometimes is a penalty workout. If I have a bad eating day I force myself to do an extra workout. It seems like you did that though...

Looking good!

Oh, and keep posting hockey pics! I dont know why, but I LOVE seeing them! It gets me all pumped with badass vibes :)

It is a little amazing when you start doing the math and realize you need to eat more to lose weight.

Good job getting back in the pull up groove!

Depending on where in Chicagoland you live, you might check out a Bass Pro for your pistol goals. I know the one at Gurnee Mills has a small range. BPS often teams with the NRA to do shooting classes. Failing that you could just hang out with I-Jo and myself while we shoot up the neighborhood.  :D

I love the idea of a penalty workout on bad eating days. I definitely should have gone that route this weekend.

We've got an amazing range nearby.   I just need to make the calls and figure out the costs of classes and or lessons.    I've been shooting for about 5 years but very infrequently and always with my bro-in-law who is a Vietnam veteran and very safety savvy.   Want to get some of my own confidence with things.    If I don't have an update on this by next week, you all kick me in the arse. :D

I had been dumped out of bed several times before by Dietrich, though it had been a while since it last happened, and this time was far more harsh than previous displacements.  Far more serious.

"Get up!   Pack your things!   I've no use for you here."

I scrambled backward as quickly as I could, fighting for traction against the cold, hardwood floor.   My eyes rose to meet my mentors and I immediately felt the heat of his gaze.

"Did you think this was some game?  Some folly that you could engage in for a time and then step away from?  Oh yes, you weave a good tale and make such enthusiastic promises, but have I seen anything more than a fool's errand out of you?   Pathetic.   I will not have you disgrace this brotherhood with such lies and false oaths."

His eyes bore into me more sharply than any hidden blade might have at that moment.  I could feel my heart pounding as if it were in my throat and my hands were suddenly damp with sweat despite the chill in the morning air.   I opened my mouth to speak, but there were no words rushing to my aid- only the quick gloved fist of Master Dietrich.

All at once his hand was at my throat, fiercely grasping the folds of my tunic and pulling me up from the ground.   With a strength that seemed unfitting his usually noble posture, and a rush of speed that belied his age, he had put me against the wall and leaned in close enough that I could feel the warmth of his breath at my cheeks.   "Why should I bother with you?"

I was trembling; at first with fear and then with shame.

"Are you afraid of me girl?" he demanded with no suggestion of patience or compassion.

I remained stilled for a moment, until finally I shook my head at him.     "No sir.  I am afraid of myself.   Of failing.   Of failing you yes, but of failing myself as well."

It was at that moment that his grip loosened, only slight enough that I was no longer held firm to the wall. but still firm within his grasp.    "Then why do you not give your best effort?"

I shrugged as best I could, head shaking again.   "I ... would rather fail for having not tried my best.  Then to try with all my heart , and ability, and still fail."

He scoffed at this, and this time it was he who shook his head.  "That is a coward's answer and you are no coward.   Do not let fear take refuge in your heart girl- that is a dark and dangerous path.   Fear has power only if you grant it such; it is your choice to deny its hold on you."   He stared at me as I chanced to lift my eyes to him and see what he was thinking.

"I have seen where you failed.   You cannot choose this life and yet sneak off in the evenings to resort to your old ways.   It must be a full commitment.  I will tolerate no less."  He paused then and let loose of me altogether.  "Gather your map, show me where you have succeeded."

I swallowed that lump of fear away, nearly dry of throat and with lips fighting the urge to tremble.  I nodded to him and ran off toward the footlocker at the end of my bunk, pulling out the five markers I had gathered from the buildings he sent me to scale.   I unrolled the city map and showed him each of the targets, then unwrapped the trinkets gathered from each location.  A metal key, an charm shaped like that of an eagle, a scroll case, a pouch of coin, and a belt buckle.

19buildingsx5_zps9ed65ef4.jpg

He examined each and then offered a nod.   "Two weeks ago I watched you struggle up your first building.   Now you have proof of your progress.  Proof that you will not fail that which you put your mind to.   Now gather your things and prepare for this week.   We have two gatherings we must attend to, and it's time you learn how to manage yourself among the civilized."

Once more I nodded, wanting to say thank you for the second chance but knowing that words would mean little at this point.   I had to show him now.

Monday - Strength Workout 1/3

  • Pull Ups : 3,4,4,3 [14]
  • Bench Press : 75# - 10, 8, 10
  • Dead Lifts : 75# - 10 X3
  • Pistol Squats : 5, - , 5
  • Single Leg Box Squat : - , 5, -
  • Supported Straight Leg Raises : 10 X3
  • Planks (regular) : 60" X 3

Another nice experience at my lil gym.   After asking the boys skulking around by the one empty bench if they were using it, and getting shakes of their head, one of them comes up and offers to go grab me a bar since he had taken the one off that bench for his dead lifts. :D   Yay for nice experiences.   Sure, I could have just grabbed my own, but if he was willing to run off and fetch one on account of his taking the one that belonged there, yes please!

Tuesday -Lunch Run (indoor track) Cardio 1/2

3.06 miles, 9:42 min/mi pace

My lower shins, on the outside, are killing me lately during runs.  No clue why.  Did I change my gait?  Is it the shoes?  How I fix?

if he took it- he should have returned it anyway- that wasn't that exceptionally nice of him- just common gym rules.

Good for you for asking to use ze bench. :)

Well, he was still using it, so he fetched me another one and then put his back to the spot fetched mine from. :P     But yeah, folks seem decent there so far.

As for the workout:  either some day, I will have incredibly impressive dead lifts and squats (if we go with the theory that I should be able to do more weight with a squat/DL than I can with a bench press) or I am an oddball and am stronger upper body than lower body right now.   OR.   I am a chickens$^t and afraid to up the weights on the leg stuff lol.

I'm starting to run out of ideas on exercises though.   I want to change things up a bit, and I seem to always pull from the same list of 12 or so things.   Must find workouts written up some where.  Also must have someone teach me how to do things like clean and press, and other things, correctly.

Your shin thing sounds like shin splints, maybe? Could be old shoes, could be a changed gait, could be the phase of the moon.

There's a tonne of info about them on the web, they're fairly common, but I can tell you from personal experience, if it's shin splints, intervening early is better than waiting. If you've never had them before, you may want to get an official diagnosis, unless you're comfortable self-diagnosing based on info on the intertubes. There are things you can do for them, but I've found that it doesn't so much make it better as make it tolerable until your body sorts itself out on its own. That said, so long as you manage it, your body will eventually sort itself out.

Just out of curiosity, what's your foot strike like when you run? Do you land on your heel or on your toes? I found running on my toes and avoiding heel striking helped a lot with shin splints, though it was a bit of a slow road to recovery and I had to do some grinning and bearing for a while (I ignored mine for longer than I should have....)

Somebody got up 1.5 hours earlier than she would on a normal work day, to start a new tradition with her hockey family.   Pre-T-Day-Dinner-Skate.   2 HOURS of friendly scrimmage.  3, 26 minute periods, full ice, no refs, no icing, no stops in play.   1 minute timed shifts, roll the lines.  O M G.   So freaking great!  And bonus?    How's about 1200 additional calories burnt before 9am.  Oh. Yeah.

That also counts as cardio #2 for this week.

Wednesday I managed to get my 2/3 Strength Workout in too.

  • Pull Ups : 4, 4, 4, 3, 2  [17]
  • Squats : 95# -5 X4, 65# -5 X1  **Decided that if I am benching 75#, I can probably handle throwing some 25# plates up on the squat bar.   Turns out I can.
  • Cable Rows : 26.4# -10X4, 22# 10 X1   **Wanted to do rows because it's one of the few exercise I can do and KNOW I am using my back and not my arms.
  • Side Planks : 45" each side, X4 Sets -- Regular Planks, 1 set 60"

Didn't overly pig out on Thanksgiving dinner.  Actually counted my calories, and was still under maintenance amount of calories for the day.   I call that a major win.

Tomorrow is my b-day, and we're doing a steak house for my b-day dinner/lunch.    Salad, steak, sauteed green beans are on tap.   Will have a range rattler (Shrimp stuffed jalapeno, deep fried.  OMG.  My fave.  So I get one on my b-day!)      Strength workout #3 planned for some point in the day.       Then Saturday is bestest guy friend treating me for b-day stuff day.   Cajun restaurant (will be harder to eat clean there, fish, or grilled shrimp I think) then he's taking me to the Circus!   (I actually don't even WANT cotton candy or circus food... heh.)   Sunday is chill day, then hockey at night (for 3rd cardio, bonus round!)   Then I get Monday off to recoup from the whirlwind weekend.  Woot.

Will check in on all ya'll threads tomorrow.   I am soooo wiped right now heh.

Squat and DL are very technique driven- if you are off- you won't lift them. Bench involves a certain amount of self preservation.  After you start training the squat and DL- you'll start seeing some quick gains.

As far as repitition- keep the core compound lifts- suppliment the accessory work. On my leg days I'll do say

Dead lifts

Walking lunges

box jumps (super setting the lunges/box jumps)

squats

bb glute raises

ultra light dead's

reverse hammy curls

work in front squats and over head squats and you will have some good stuff to play with.

As usual you are doing so well. your progress is always so inspiring to me.

How old are your shoes? I know my shins get super complain-y when my shoes get worn down. Are you stretching them before and after running? I have to take extra special care of mine because of the PF and I remember you said you had it, too.

Hee thanks Chickie!  Those burros are f'in sweet!

Short update now.  Better one later.  (Now you can hold me accountable, see).

Birthday official day.

Slept in.

Went to lunch at steak house.  Ate filet, sauteed green beans, salad and 2 deep fried range rattlers.  Had 1/2 the red velvet cupcake they brought out free for me.

Home.  Presents.

Got a Nerf Crossbow, BADASS  And Assassins Creed 4.  (I love that I get presents like this, at my age hee.)

Played AC4, ALL DAY.

Left over Turkey Day dinner. Turkey, boiled sweet potatoes, some stuffing, and homemade cranberry sauce.

Ok, yeah, I HAD TWO slices of Cheesecake for dessert later.  Haha.

In interesting news, I now totally believe my fitbit is not a liar.    Yesterday's tracking of calories, with my sitting on my butt all day except for walking around a craft store to look for a gift for someone, told me it was 1600 calories of burned energy.   For doing nothing but sitting, all day and a scoche of walking.  (I only got 3000 steps. haha) I suppose 1600 seems about right.

So I was a total lazy b-day girl yesterday.   Originally wanted to hit the gym.   So that's today instead.
