Miyamoto - Entering the hidden forest

My Main Goals :
Losing 4 kg of weight; gaining more muscles esp. in core; get rid of those love handles.

Learn the long Yang form of TaiChi.

My Missions:

Building Strenght:
(- Doing good old magic wand routines
   (as described here)
Cancelled because of tendinitis)

- FlexBar Reverse Tyler Twist 3 sets of 15, DAILY

- Exercises for pectoral girdle w/ Theraband
   (Mon, Wed, Fri, STR +2)
- plus 30 sec. up to 3 min. standard plank (30 sec. more each week)
   (Mon, Wed, Fri, STR +1.5)
- three plank variations for 30 sec. each (leg-arm-lift, spiderman, sideplank)
   (Mon, Wed, Fri, STR +1.5)

Building Stamina:
- Doing  twice a week 1 hour brisk walking OR 30 min of easy jogging through the woods,
  occasionally with fartlek.
  (Tue, Thu, STA +2 )

Building Flexibility:
- Doing warm-up / DoIn Makko-Ho / Baduanjin / TaiChi routine, min. 5 times a week, early morning
  (Mon - Fri, DEX +2)

Building Food Competence:
- NO sweets (chocolate, cake, soda etc.)
- first 3 weeks max. ONE beer per day, last 3 weeks NO alcohol at all.
  (CON +3)

Life Goal:
- Read about TaiChi and Baduanjin, prepare kind of TaiChi dojo.

- Get tendinitis fixed.

  (WIS +2 CHA +1)

Remarks:

On Strenght:
- Some time ago I unfortunately developed a tendinitis in my elbow, which is getting worse in the moment and detains me from doing strenght exercises with my upper body like push ups, pull ups or similar things I‘d rather like to do. So I had to search for alternatives.

- Yay! I found my good old magic wand again! Here is one of it‘s type. But mine is not so rusty. I used it some 30 years ago to shift my shape from a skinny nerd to a well defined Adonis. :D Somewhere under this skin he has to be hidden. Perhaps I can elicit him again with this magic wand? Cancelled because of tendinitis

- I feel I have to strenghten my core a bit more, therefore I‘ll try regular planks and handstand (which surprisingly don‘t affect my tendonitis 'til now) *edit*: changed, removed handstand, see below.

On Stamina:
- Cardio running is not paticularly my thing, but I HAVE to be in nature some time of the week, even it is only a few hours (you fellow druids know this urge, I suppose). So I‘ll switch from intervall training to cushy jogs and walking/hiking.

On Flexibility:
- Because I did TaiChi for a long time and got a kind of a „licence to teach“ for the 24-Form from my former instructor, I decided to revitalize and develop this skill and switch over to TaiChi from Baduanjin (which is nevertheless a powerfull and recommendable art). *edit*: changed, added Baduanjin routine.

On Food
-I‘m very positive about the benefits of Paleo Diet. Especially because long ago I read a book named „SyndromX oder Ein Mammut auf den Teller!" (Syndrom X or Have a mammoth on your plate!) from the german nutritional scientist Nicolai Worm :) who described exactly the same things I read on NerdFitness and which convinced me already at that time.
But regrettably I didn‘t manage until now to eat in this way, neither I see a chance to do so in nearest future, due to my present life circumstances. So I have to change the things I feel I‘m able to.

On Life Goal
- Here also applies what I wrote under „Flexibility“. Once apon a time I bought three Video-Cassettes on which a chinese master explains the 108-Form of Yang-Style very detailed.
Though I can not recommend learning TaiChi exclusively from such media, I hope I can manage it, especially because I already know about the movements from the 24-Form. In any case I will give it a honest try. *edit*: changed, see below.

So fellow druids, this is my plan for the next challenge.  If you have proposals for changing some parts, please let me know.

Yours

Miyamoto

Hi!

I also have the "5 minutes handstand" routine in my challenge! and practice my forms (not TaiChi, though)! But I am playing with the monks this round...

Love also your "walk in the woods" goal :)

Good luck with the challenge

Hi Tkal

THX for your good wishes.

I also thought about going with the monks because I consider TaiChi as a martial art rather than a meditation style.

But as it seems, here at The Rebellion TaiChi is counted to the druids and additionally I don't have the urge to join a dojo and take part in their workout. So I decided to stay with the druids.

And also because I'm especially interested in Daoism and the spiritual aspect of the martial arts, I think I fit in here properly.

Good luck for your goals!

M.

I've tried a little bit of Tai Chi and it's pretty relaxing.  That's pretty cool you got qualified to teach it.

I've really started running, just to be outside in the trees and can't think of anything better. Good luck with everything!

One day I will try Tai Chi, but thanks for the links. I will be reading through them.

Magic wands and time in nature are requirements for Adonis so I know we will see him in you. :)

The question isn't who's going to let me, it's who's going to stop me!

Hello Miyamoto, please feel very welcome here!

I like your goals, it looks like you have a good plan, they seem realistic and you have allowed for rest. You write that your main goal is to lose 4 kilos. What is your motivation?

It seems that TaiChi has been central in your life before and that you feel joy in reintroducing it….

What kind of grading will you use?

I have chosen to believe in myself.

THX Evenewbie for your welcome and your hints and questions.

My motivation for losing 4 kilos is simply the fact, that I don't like the look of my "love handles" in the mirror. Nice name for a not so nice view :) . Maybe they come with age but as the rest of my body is ok for me, I really want to get rid of them.

Tai Chi was actually the last martial art I tried 'til now (after TaeKwonDo and Aikido) and I felt that this was my thing. So I'm really looking forward to intense my contact with it again.

If it's ok with the rules, my grading philosophy is "all or nothing". Either I do my missions completely and earn all points or I don't do them and get no points.

But I'm afraid I have to readjust some of my goals and missions already at his stage as follows:

We were just talking about TaiChi so I'll take this first.

I will move the task of learning the 108-Form to my main goal, because it takes a lot more time and recources as I first thought. Especially I dont find a time slot in the moment (this is not the "I have no time excuse!) to train it properly as it deserves it besides the rest of my missions and my 8-to-5 job. Maybe I'll go with the monks for some of the next challenges where I will approach this goal more or less exclusively.

So in this challenge I will do preliminary things like reading about it, have a first glimpse at the videos and preparing a location in my home where I can do TaiChi over a longer time a day with a device for watching the videos. Not so easy with a 2 year old girl in the house :D

Nevertheless I will continue my daily morning TaiChi short form.  But together with Baduanjin, as I did in challenge #1, because my body seems to request some Baduanjin. So it may have what it wants.

Sadly I have to quit the handstand mission, because my tendinitis got worse and this kind of training hurts. Due to this weakness I bent my back too much in the handstand, which hurts and is certainly not healthy. It seems I have to get stronger first, loose some weight and try to get the ellbow fixed.

So I'll better replace the handstand with some additional plank variations.  But I will definitely revisit this misson when I go with the monks for the TaiChi thing, provided my tendinitis has improved.

And so last but not least I add "get elbow fixed" to my life quest, because this item hinders me from doing more intense strenght training. Actually I will visit my doctor again next Monday. I hope he will not recommend an operation, because I had already some other therapy, which didn't work like injections, ultrasonic etc., and an OP will stop my NF training for quite a while.

I will edit this changes directly into my first posting, so the overview over this challenge doesn't suffer.

I hope this changes are ok, but as we druids know by heart: Everything flows.

Finally I have a photo for you I took on my jog through the woods yesterday evening. I got out late and it got dark already, last phase of dusk. When I passed a pond, which laid in the mist under a waxing moon, I felt connected and centered.

So I try to share this moment with you, though it's only a picture with my old out-of-date handy. I hope you will feel the atmosphere anyway.

Have a nice day and may the Tao be with you!

hey Miyamoto,

I know how you feel with that elbow tendinitis - I'VE GOT THE SAME - unfortunately I'm trying to fix it since around January, but only recently I did drop ALL activities that requires using that hand (even yoga poses, planks, swimming, not to mention strength training) and start taking meds.

If I can suggest smth - have you seen some specialist already ? Either physiotherapist or orthopedist - best both :)  ... you should ask them what kind of activities will slow down your healing process (cause your bullworker chart looks like you will be using your hand a lot) ...

remember that elbow tendonitis is a nasty thing - doesn't hurt much but heals reaaaaaaalllly slow. - talking from experience, docs saying and lots of web reading.

Anyways, take care of yourself and I hope your elbow will heal much faster than mine - good luck!

btw. pretty hardcore goals you have here :) wish ya super awesome challenge :)

Hi Panczo,

THX for your wishes and suggestions. I will ask the doc, if he recommends rather rest than movement of the joint.

Unfortunately I deal with this tendonitis since almost two years. I acquired it while laying some paving stones in the garden and since then I visit my orthopedist regulary. But I have to admit that I didn't follow all of his recommendations toooo closely. I got a kind of a strap for my elbow, which sucks wearing it. But I think I will give it an additional try.

My doc told me, I'm suffering a golfer's elbow, which is definitely the nobler version of a tennis elbow - at least in terms of it's name. A cold comfort. :D

All the best for you and also your elbow

Are golf and tennis the same side of the elbow? I know I've strained muscles in my elbow but it was the wrong side to be tennis elbow so we made up the name karate elbow. :)

As I understood, tennis hurts the outer side, golf the inner side (directed to body when palm faced upside) of the elbow. We here in our lab also call it pipetting elbow.:)

I found a video about the tennisarm - unfortunately in german - but the pictures tell the story. The golfer elbow affects the other side of the elbow.

So back from the orthopedist. He gave me an injection again and told me I have to strenghten my pectoral girdle, but WITHOUT any gripping motion with my hands. So no barbells, no Bullworker etc. He said I have to go swimming for that purpose.

As I have no good oportunity (and also the money) to go swimming on a regular basis, I have to seek out other possibilities. I found and already ordered a device named "Thera-Band Flex Bar" and a very recommended exercise, the "Reverse Tyler Twist" which helps apparently direct for the hurting elbow.

But I would be very thankful for any proposals concerning exercises, which strenghten the pectoral girdle without strain to the forearm muscles. I would prefer exercises, which I could do at home, using for example a Theraband or body weight, without going to a gym.

So it seems, I have to change my exercise plans for this challenge again, and I wonder if I should quit completely until my arm is o.k. again. But this will take quite a while...

Yesterday I received the Flex Bar and already did the 3 x 15 reps. exercise of the "Reverse Tyler Twist" as recommended. I will report, if it helps.

Additionally I use a Ibuprofen ointment twice a day on the hurting elbow, cool it three times a day with ice for some minutes and wear my forearm-clamp. Til now, it seems my elbow gets better.

Also did a easy jog for 30min in the woods yesterday and this morning my morning exercises, as scheduled.

Concerning food goal: beer task: not so good, sweets task: excellent. We've got a cupboard in our break room, filled with giant amounts of sweets of all thinkable kind. I managed it at all times to have a look at them whilst my coffee break in the afternoon, touch them and put them back without any regret. Took some nuts instead.

Don't quit! There is still so much good you can do and we'd miss you. Just modify your goals to suit the new challenge. Perhaps, do strengthaning excercises for your arm blank times a week.

Yay for putting the sweets back! That's great

THX Arilian for yor cordial and encouraging words.

But Crud! Again a cold! Damn! May be it comes from running through cold and misty forests during dusk.

So again no running, no strenght exercise.

Additionally I think it was a quite idealistic - not to say foolish - idea, to try to avoid alkohol during the holyday season with all of it's occasions of pre-christmas-markets, family meetings and parties. Nevertheless I will have an eye on my consumption of these goodies, so I will not overdo it, and return to this goal in the next challenge, when holydays are over.

That means if I continue to take part in this challenge, the only exercises I can do during this and maybe next week are the FlexBar thing for my elbow and my morning routine. Also the sweets task works good.  I will stick to these missions anyway.

I have found my old TACX device and already attached a bicycle to it. So when I'm able to start cardio again, I will try to use this for indoor training (which I hate!) instead of running in the cold. Maybe this helps against the permanent colds. (Today first snow and maxtemps around 0°C here). Let's see if I'll persevere this.

So I'm sorry I have to reduce my missions in such a huge amount, but my body seems to tell me to slow down my effort.

And maybe my elbow will benefit from reduced training.

So long

I have tendinitis in both my arms from professional cooking and the best solution I ever found was a chiropractor who also did soft tissue work. He's aggressive in his treatments, I mean honestly it hurt, but when I left I would feel great. I went back to cooking without wrist braces on.

@tod & swaffe: THX for your replies and supporting words.

The start of week #4 finds me nearly recovered from my cold which capped it all by invading my intestinal tract on the weekend, making me worship the gods of the toilet bowl.  anbet.gifs-wc-wc.gif

So I had to cancel my exercises completely since Friday and I'm still a bit weak and dizzy.

I think I can go on with my morning exercise tomorrow. With cardio I'll wait until I feel healthy again.

So long and all the best to my fellow druids.

Hey Miyamoto, I just found your thread and I am into Tai Chi too. What is the name of the short form you practice? I only do the Peking 24 short form these days since it has the 13 original forms in it. I learned the long forms from Yang and Wu, plus 2 Chen forms. These days all I do is the short form and the sword form.

We do not rise to the level of our expectations in a fight.

We fall to the level of our training.

Hi Evenewbie, THX for your consoling words. I feel, my elbow is getting better now that I follow Doc's recommendations and do stretching and FlexBar training and gave up on strength training for a while.  I'm afraid I'm not able to do other exercises except my Baduanjin/TaiChi routine in the mornings for this challenge. But maybe next challenge I'll do better.

Hi Taijibum, I'm practicing the Peking24 form. Unfortunately I didn't learn any other. I once started to learn the 108 Yang form but had to quit due to private motives. Maybe in remote future I will have time and money to learn a sword form, what I would really like to. But then, I think it would be more adequate to learn a cane form. :D

A little bit late, but the last week my browser refused to show me the rebellion site for many times.

So now to my resume for this challenge.

As mentioned before, I had to cut down my activities to a minimum because of different illnesses and injuries.

So I can take only 1,5 points for strenght by completing the FlexBar training and doing some shoulder Theraband training.

Stamina only one point for at least walking or hiking whenever possible.

Dexterity 2 points, because I did my morning routine almost regularily and additional stretching of my elbow against tendinitis.

No points for my food goals, because I cheated too much. Next time better!

I'll give me all points I planned for my life goal, because I read a lot about TaiChi and Baduanjin and managed to get my tendinitis better.

So thank you for your comments and support during this challenge and I hope you agree to my graduation.

I'll be back!!!
