Funny, but I don't usually get the tantrums until I go off grains/simple sugars.

Ha! I went for a run today -- 3K "fast". It's been aaaaaaaaaiiiiiiges since Iast ran and I got a new badge at smashrun for coming back after more than 30 days. Not too flattering, but hey! Yay for badges.:)

I didn't run around the block like before but down to the park, one lap, and back up again. The "up" and "down" parts tell you that it's not the ideal "fast" route. So my overall average was only 9.53 min/mile when I'd made a reasonably good job running 9.30 on the flat.

But I live in a very hilly city and just running around the block was so mindnumbingly boring I just couldn't take it. I still can't believe people actually enjoy running on treadmills.

However that brings to mind the sister of a friend who bought herself a stationary bike "so that she wouldn't be as bored when watching TV".  She probably was just playing down her fitness aspirations but I don't think the hilariousness of that quote occurred to her.

After running I did a few sun salutations, 5-4-3 push ups on a football and - wait for it - my first headstand in 30 years!

Mr Nanako had to help me push up my legs because I was terrified I'd break my neck and back, and fall over.

But once I was stood there, I could hold it for about 30 seconds or so.

Quite chuffed.

Will practise in the kids room from tomorrow because there's a wall there.

Amazing awesomeness going on here today.

This was very much a DO IT NOW day.

Apart from the workout, I managed to

  • make a chicken roast with all the trimmings
  • make chicken stock from the leftovers (for making chicken stew (for making chicken pie))
  • clean up the garden (that has been on my to-do list since July)
  • clean the kitchen
  • make a maths hat for my son's maths week next week
  • change the sheets on all the beds (the taking off and washing part)
  • get the uniforms ready for tomorrow
  • wash and fold all the washing for next week

Now all that's left on my to-do list is bathing the kids and it's only five.

So I'll spend the rest of the day cleaning some more  and making the chicken stew (then all I've got to do tomorrow is slap some pastry on an that's it) and being quite pleased with myself. :) Later it's a nice glass of wine and watching crazy Carrie Mathison mess up the CIA.

How was the roast chicken? I'm a big big fan.

It turned out  really well, thanks!

Crispy skin and very nice taste, yumm.

It was a local organic chicken - one the farmers knew - so it was huuuuuugely expensive - £10 - but since I got 3 meals out of it, it was probably ok. At least for the chicken it was. :)

Oh, oh, it's first week wrap up time already!

How did I do?

I didn't manage to stay under 50g carbs - I averaged 125g.

I did a lot better on the calorie goal, since I averaged at 1705 - that's 145Kcal lower than my goal average. So well done on that one.

I didn't lose a lot of weight - I'm at 74kgs now when I started out at 75kgs. :(

I think I've lost inches though - I can fit two fists into my jeans waistband now when it was really tight before I started. Will check tomorrow.

At this point I'm struggling to reduce the carbs more. I'm not really eating a lot but I'm having two lattes a day and some fruit, and a slice of bread every now and again.

Not quite so sure how to proceed.

I feel like I could easily reduce calories a bit more - thermodynamics tell you that I should be losing weight like that.

However, experience tells me that reducing carbs will do the trick, even if I don't reduce calories  - so should I trust my logic or my experience?

Is that 1kg drop all during this first week of the challenge? If so, that's really nothing to scoff at.

It's important to remember when considering the thermodynamics of weight loss that human bodies are not closed systems. While we can kinda-sorta estimate our calorie intake and expenditures, it is by no means an exact science. I personally have not found carbohydrate restriction effective for myself, but if it has worked for you in the past and you know it's sustainable and doesn't make you feel like crap or negatively impact your performace, then I say go with it. Just make sure to keep plenty of records so you can be sure whether you're actually seeing results or just falling prey to confirmation bias.

Most people would be pretty pleased with a whole kilo in a week. Bodyweight fluctuates a lot anyway (without getting too graphic...) so if you feel like your clothes are looser that's probably a better indicator of change. Good work.

Thanks guys!

Yeah, I guess I should be happy with the slow and steady progress. (but I'm NOT!!!!)  :)

Try doing the carb thing, this is usually a sure shot and it just requires a little more effort ...

Stats yesterday were

74kg / 161 lbs

waistline:   73.5cm

tummy: 75.5cm

That's one centimeter off the tummy and half a centimeter off the waistline, and half a kilo lost. (Two kilos since the beginning of my new weight loss episoide which has now already lasted for  - gasp - 3 weeks !).

If I were any good at facing the facts I'd be happy, but since I'm still in denial, thinking I should/could never have weighed that much anyway, that's blighted a little.

I went a little bit off the rails yesterday (one sandwich and a substantial amount of cottage pie) but still managed a tiny deficit:

1914 - 78 - 167 - 101

EDIT Weight is back up again to 75Kgs but I can feel it's water - feeling a bit puffy. I'm tracking the weight and unsurprisingly, it looks like I can model it reasonably well by a downward trend with a 4-week water cycle superimposed.

Pigged out on bread yesterday and hit 2500 calories!

A day early (usually it's Thursday). Still managing to keep the weekly average at around 1620. Good job.

After playing with the body weight simulator http://bwsimulator.niddk.nih.gov/ a bit I realized I will have to up my game if I want to achieve my goal by Christmas. With this caloric intake, I need to at least run twice a week. One club run (60 min) and one Saturday run (30 min) would do the trick. Not asking too much I think. ;)

On a different not I'm quite chuffed that I've been on this 'diet' for almost 4 weeks now! I think it's the longest time I've ever persevered. :D Maybe there is hope after all.

Bread is hard to resist. How come you get 1620 cals though? My phone won't let me eat more than 1560 and I'm a bloke.

I guess I just deserve moar! :D

No, seriously, no idea. How much are you trying to lose per week, a pound? That would explain it.

I'm just trying at a ~200kcal deficit per day and burn the rest through running.

Pushed myself today on my "fast" run and did 3.7K (not quite the 4K I was aiming at, but I had to buy toilet roll :D so I stopped at the store).

I went reasonably well and by not running up the hill I improved my average pace a lot. :D

I did the 3.7K at 9.20 pace, which is ok - there's one hill per lap in the park so I am getting closer to where I was at (flat) park run 6 weeks ago.

I didn't feel like going at first and really had to push myself on the last half K.

But I find I really really like these short fast runs - everytime I come back form one I think "This is IT! I'm going to go EVERY day!"

A bit overenthusiastic maybe. But hey, they do improve my time a lot.

A bit disappointed with the diet bit. I haven't lost much and I've been slipping the last two days. I need to get back on track.

I've stuck to my goal - the last week I averaged at 1730kcals or 1530 "net" according to my tracker. But it's not doing much - too little of a deficit probably.

But I feel I am also less energetic when I eat more carbs, so I really want to get back on track.

It's wrap up time again!

Last week went ok. I went overboard a few times but didn't fall off the wagon completely.
I averaged at

1842kcals, 89g fat, 119g carbs, and 105g prots.
Still too many kcals overall, too little fat and way too many carbs. (Carbs are all veg and milk and bread though, no sweets or crisps or anything.)

However I turned the corner this weekend - very low carb (except for some coconut milk on Sun). Woke up feeling thirsty and "keto" again.
Could hardly finish my coffee because it tasted incredibly sweet - although that was just the milk!
Try to stay on the wagon.

Weight still at 74kg but I'm expecting some water loss over the next few days.

Can I just say how much I hate that gap between imagination and reality?

I was going to up my "fast" miles (-> 3x2K per week) which sounded like a good plan yesterday night.

But then - I overslept this morning.

When I came home from work I had millions of excuses but went anyway.

When running, I thought I was going really fast but my lungs were burning ... and then I saw my shadow under the streetlight, like a rhinocerus.

After that run my watch said I'd done a mere 9.20min/mile over less than 2K.

Not happy. I did everything right! I want my instant reward! :(
