starbon's 4rth time around the block

Hello there everyone !

So..this challenge is going to be different, yet somewhat the same for me as the last one (which kindof fizzled out towards the end....oopsie). I;ve realised that what I'm lacking is the pure momentum needed to go forward and see my challenges through instead of going through 3-4 week cycles of starting, holding and aborting. SO..this time my greatest weapon in this challenge is going to be...A PRINTOUT CALENDAR ! everyday I meet my goals, I will cross / mark out the date. Days I don't remain empty. I've already tried out a proof of concept for the last 2 weeks, and thus far the sight of the calendar seems to be itching me towards doing more than I used to, even if it is playing the guitar for just 10 minutes instead of 30 - but hey ! I DID play it , so I'm counting that as a win.

Briefly - my goals in this challenge are -

1. Workout - I already have thai boxing classes on mondays and wednesdays going until december 4rth. Friday and any other day class is cancelled is my hit the weight room day, where, to be honest I have no fixed gameplan. I generally go in and do shoulders, arms, chest and leg work using barbells / dumbbels or cables. All other days (tuesdays, thursdays & saturdays) are low intensity cardio days (walking/ jogging) or, if I can't manage to go to the gym, pushups and squats days. Mandatory 2 sets of 20 pushups and 20 goblet squats. I am also ever so slowly working towards being able to do a handstand, so I'll be doing that as well.

Grading - using the calendar. Plus (+) sign for workouts done

2. guitar day -  It has been my fond wish to be able to play this instrument for a long time. But sadly, every single time I've started , I've given up with a month or so. This time, I will use the power of the calendar to needle me into going on. Worked for the last 2 weeks. Here's to hoping that trend goes on

Grading - using the calendar. Cross (x) sign for days I practise (even if it is for 10 mins)

3. Making sure life doesn't get me down - I ...have the habit of giving up on stuff. In the last 6 week challenge, I started operation Humint - briefly, it's an ongoing process to make me less of a withdrawn grouch, and atleast present an approachable persona. I did notice that just the physical act of smiling at people ( even though i was all dark and gloomy inside) did make me less of a grouch for a brief period after. SO ..my challenge this time is to keep up the smiles, and keep a positive attitude.

Grading - More of a play it by ear thing. But as a penalty, I impose a 10 pushup rule everytime I am feeling down. If I'm going to be grumpy, might as well be grumpy with good arms. :P

Goodluck and Godspeed !

Interesting, I'm thinking of physically diarizing my day as well. Have you tried physical calendars in the past? I'm wondering if, for example, the workout and guitar practicing slip because you don't seem to have a game plan or set goals in mind? Sometimes small, incremental measurements of success can help you keep motivated. Instead of just a pass/fail 'Do x each day' tracking matrix.

That's a great idea Sicil, but sadly I've never quite been able to stick to the diarising aspect of things too much, and when I have, it's always been doom and gloom and despair :P

That being said, I am toying with the idea of maintaining a diary / journal to chronicle life as it happens, and also to try and improve my penmanship. Maybe I'll put it as a goal for the next challenge ...

logbook for tuesday -

workout - should have been a cardio day, but i was at work till 9:30 so had to sub in 2 sets of 20 puchups and squats. for some reason pushups are becoming hard for me. Previously ( as in 2 weeks ago) I used to be able to knock out 3 sets of 20 no problemo, but now my shoulders and triceps strain and become sore quickly. I'm getting the feeling that the one day when I overdid upper body workouts severely and then was sore for 3 days is still affecting me. I might have to take up foam rolling to ease out the strain.

guitar playing - right now I am following the lesson plan on justinguitar.com. I have to say, that guy is quite a good teacher. Practised chord changes and finger excercises for 10 ish minutes

logbook for wednesday -

Thai boxing -  Was taxing to say the least. I managed to bruise the heck out of my shins and feet kicking the bag, which means as far as kicks go I still need to work on my form and stability. Not to mention the whole things winded me up terribly. But all in all, I would consider it a good workout session. lots of sweat and a general tiredness all over means I think I pushed myself.

Guitar - practised for another 15 minutes. same chord changes, I think I;m getting better. Ready for the next lesson ! yeay

Love the calendar and I'm with you on the not really have a plan but making sure you do something anyway. Often I just get so focused on my goals that if I can't complete the goals I can't do anything so I'm really glad to see someone accepting that anything you can do to help towards your goals is good enough.

Thanks Faervel17 ! you nailed it on the head when you said that we need to be doing something anyways when you don't have a plan ! I guess in this case, failing to plan is NOT planning to fail !

Thursday's logbook -

workout - i actually hotfooted it to the gym and walked at a brisk pace for 30 ish mins, after which I jogged for 10 mins and then flat out ran for a minute or so. Yeay cardio :)

guitar - practising chord switches between the same 3 chords now. I think I'm getting better ...maybe :P I need to take my computer home one of these days and actually look up the next lesson

looking forward to the unstructured workout tonight. I'm actually going to the gym with a buddy (hopefully) and he has chicken legs,...while I have chicken arms (is that even a term ?)...well atleast my legs are slightly more builtup than his...So it'll be fun - he's going to push me in doing upper body stuff while I'm going to whip him into doing lower body :P

So...well work got me down yesterday, but I'm happy to day I still managed to go to the gym and get SOME workout done..although by the time I was halfway into my supposedly 'unplanned' session the student workers were starting to switch off lights in the gym lol. I really wanted to try a cable twist..but oh wwll..live to fight another day :P

friday's logbook -

workout - this was one thing that i Really didn;t want to do...I was sleepy, bored, dejected..and I was late enough that my bud ditched me. BUT, I still forced myself to go, and lo and behold...I survived ! Did squats, assisted pullups and bench press. wanted to go for cable twists and farmer's walks but gym was closing..so maybe today ?

guitar - Practising the same 3 chords..mostly because I was so pooped out that I wouldn't fire up the laptop to look as new lessons. So I just practised chord switching - this has been a major sticking point whenever I;ve tried to learn in the past.. I can play individual chords well, but when it comes to rapidly switching between chords my fingers just turn to jelly. I'm hoping that will not be the case with practise :)

low intensity cardio day today ..plus  maybe if I have energy I'll just go ahead and do a tiny winy bit of strenght training

Starbon, I'm glad to see you're back for another challenge. Hurray! And it looks like you've had a productive first week.

I wonder if for your guitar goal, it might help if you had something to train for... like a recital, or something. Maybe just a plan to play in public somewhere, or for a couple of friends, so it's lower pressure. It would be a good motivator, anyway.

Good to be back ! hopefully my energy doesn't fizzle out in the middle of the challenge like the other ones !

The recital thing is a great idea ! I shall go ahead and set one for  maybe 2 months from now. That is, if everyone's willing to come hear cats wailing :P Hopefully I'm better than that :D

Logbook for saturday -

workout - cardio on the treadmill and then a bit of strength training. I found out my optimal (thus far) running pace is about a 10 min mile. Thus far I can run 10 mins in that pace no severe discomfort. I'm waiting till the next time and see whether I can stretch it to 11 minutes. This is ofcourse followed by a 1 min flat out run, which is kind of funny if it were not so mind bogglingly lung searing.

Tried out cable twists this time around - they are quite a load on your abs ! so they get incorporated into my workout routine as well. I did try to do a glute ham raise, but failed miserably :( next time round I'm going to tweak the setting a bit and see if I can't manage atleast 1

guitar - totally vegged out. no practise. Bad me.

sunday - did absolutely nothing of nothing. which is good for workouts cus its my recuperation and every single muscle getting tight day :P not so good for guitar though :\

log book for monday -

workout - got my butt literally served to me on a platter during thai boxing. There;s this guy who's probably all of 6'5" 200-220 lbs tall and pretty much all muscle, not to mention he's a taekwondo (prolly spelled that wrong but annyhoo) black belt, and he was my sparring / training  partner. To put that into context I'm 5'6" desperately going for 5' 6.5" 160 lb with a 15-18 % body fat. BUT, that being said, it was good to be pushed by someone with a much higher capability than me. My knuckles are bruised and I have gashed in my elbows and legs from where I made involuntary deposits of skin and blood on the thai pads and punching bags, but I'm happy. There really is truth to the saying, pain is only temporary. Yesterday I felt alternately out of balance (esp during kicks) and about to throw up and quit quite a few times to just sit down and take a breather, but I went the whole 1 hour of training and I'm sortof kindof proud I stuck and didn't just give up.

after thte thai boxing class I went for a tiny bit of strangth training. did 3 sets of 10 cable twists with 42.5 lb (I hope) each side and 2+1  sets of 7 lat pulldowns with 120 & 130 lbs. My major victory of the day was being able to finally figure out and get the courage to do the glute -ham raise (3 sets of 5, bodyweight), although for some reason all the goliaths in the dumbbell area were staring at me when I was doing it :/ . Either I was doing something weird or ...I have no idea. Same for the cable twists

guitar - practised chord changes between A, D & E . I;m happy to say they're getting smoother day by day. I really ought to move on to the next lesson.

Today's light cardioi day, so running and deffo some stretching. I have a feeling my hammies are going to be tighter than a snare drum

logbook for tuesday -

workout - did the usual 30 mins of cardio, which was 14 mins of brisk walking at pace 4 and then 11 minutes of running / jogging at 6, followed by 1 min of flat out OMGIAMONFIRE running at 9 followed by walking again at pace 4. I think it reasonably well. THis was followed by some rear deltoid work and then some stretching and goblet squats or rather just sitting down in the goblet squat pose and stretching the legs out. Grok pose, I believe its called :P

guitar - was too pooped to practise. Not to mention since I forgot to look up new material (AGAIN) I really didn;t have the heart to do it. MUST DO TODAY

logbook for wednesday -

welp, I did it again - missed both my workout and guitar practise cus I got sidetracked helping a friend out. Nevertheless, that's a poor excuse. I should be more disciplined than this. not to mention the negative momentum in case of guitar practise is building up. I have to have to have to practise today.

Since yesterday was thai boxing day which i missed, i'll be doing strength training instead of running . My plan (sorta) is to start with jumping rope, then squats, then overhead press, glute ham raise, assisted pullups, goblet squats, bench press and end with cable twist. I kind of have the weights i did last time round in my head, but anyways I'm trying to be more focussed on proper form and execution rather than strength gain, so I'll be starting from barbell only and then increase weights each set till I'm on the edge of comfortable, and then do 2 sets of 5 with that weight.

Starbon, I am very impressed.  You are doing very well!  I like the fact that even when you miss something you seem to intend on putting something else in its place.......  THAT is how you succeed. Keep on rock'n it! (literally since your learning the guitar :playful: )

And thank you.

logbook for thursday -

workout  -  I did it ! I was feeling like crap and sleepy and lethargic, and I'm pretty sure old me would have just found an excuse to chicken out, but I DID it, and I am legit proud :) okay enough boasting.

So yesterday I started off every routine with barbell only and then stacked on weights till I felt I couldn;t handle the next incrememnt of weights safely anymore. I'm just going to state the max here for reference . I did barbell squats (max 10 reps @ 40 lb each side), overhead press (max 7 reps 15 lb each side..for some reason I think the overhead press is the weakest for me, even when I started with this whole rigmarole of strength training I remember I had just as much difficulty pressing 70 lb as I have now. I think my shoulders are a lot more well defined now, but it remains to be seen whether that's muscle gained or just fat lost...)

glute ham raise - just did bodyweights

benchpress - max 10 reps of 25  lb each side

cable twist - max 10 reps of 42.5 (prolly lb)

goblet squats - no increase in weights done , just 3 sets of 10 with 35 lb

assissted pullups - 3 sets of 6

guitar - practised a new chord (E minor) and also chord switching. Happy to say that I;m starting to develop calluses on the fingertips, so hopefully in future I can play for longer than 5 minutes at a go :)

today's go run on a treadmill day. wheeee :onthego:

I've heard, and maybe you already know about this, that humans are stronger with eccentric movement than concentric movement. It's harder to lift than to lower, and it might also be harder to build muscles to lift than to lower. This is where I heard about it, around minute 30:

www.bulletproofexec.com/66-the-calorie-myth-with-jonathan-bailor-podcast/

The entire podcast is pretty good, but somewhat unrelated... the "calorie myth." Perfect for if you're bored and entering a bunch of data into a spreadsheet, or grading lab reports.

yesterday was supposed to be a cardio day, but for some reason neither could I walk briskly at 4 mph nor could I run at 6 mph without getting the muscle that runs along the shin of both legs painfully tight. so i resigned myself to walking for the next 20 odd minutes at 3 mph and ran for 5 mins at 5 mph. Finsinhed with about 10 mins in the sauna. Hopefully this is just a temporary setback and the muscles loosen up with stretching. I was almost getting excited at my ability to comfortably run at a 10 min mile pace, it;d be disappointing to lose all of that

guitar - practised all of the chords and switching. I've found that playing cold and trying to switch messes me up, instead I have to practise for a bit before I can get the switches down pat. Guess I'm not QUITE there yet :)

pretty much all of my muscles are just a tiny winy bit sore today, so I think I'm going to refrain from pushing the limit in terms of weights for today. I think I'm just going to do all of the excercises as I did on thursday, sortof take my time and not increase the weights.

Nice job on guitar practice!

What kind of shin stretches do you do? I've heard that foam rolling can help. Hope it feels better soon...

why thank you ! and nothing special on the stretches..just the usual of grabbing one leg by your back and trying not to fall over..or pushing against the wall which doesn;t seem to move an inch.. actually tbh those are hammie and quad stretches. the only shin stretch i know off is just extending your foot like a ballet dancer and rotating it about the ankle, so i've done that. other than that, nothing special. I do have to get some foam rolling done, its just one of those things that i plan on doing but never end up getting done when going to the gym :/

logbook for saturday -

workout - did pretty much the same excercise on friday except the bench press and the cable twist cus I was just a bit pooped out.

guitar practise also didn;t happen for some odd reason, which I can't for the life of me remember now. O.o

logbook for sunday -

workout - rest day. yipppeeeee

guitar - practised all 5 chords i know of and also chord switching. getting there....

logbook for monday -

workout -thai boxing day. was pretty good but from my energy levels I felt that I wasn;t really pushing it. Kicking was hard - I have this tendency of kicking with the end of my foot instead of the shin bone, so at the end of class (or sometimes even after just one particularly hard kick) I'm usually painfully sore in the flat of the foot. Not to mention I have terrible hip mobility and can't for the life of me control my balance when one foot is above waist height and / or moving. oh well..live and learn. I guess I'm going to add doing splits to handstands on the list of things to do.. I guess I;m going to have ample time to do those over the weekend since the gym's going to be closed most days .

guitar practise - practised chord changing. I noticed for some reason the sound is much cleaner when I'm looking at my fretting hand than when I;m trying to do it by feel or looking at the strumming hand (duh !!) have to practise more

today's cardio day. I;m gunna throw in a couple of bench presses and goblet squts before running just for variety's sake. Hopefully I CAN run today and not hobble along like gollum... :P

Sounds like things are going well!  Also, the regular updates are fantastic. :)

Thanks ! the pressure of journalling regularly instead of only on days I do something noteworthy coupled with crossing off days on the calendar actually is helping me keep on track in a huge way !

logbook for tuesday -

workout - did bench presses ( sets of 10 reps starting from bar only to bar + 60 lb), goblet squats with 35 lb and assisted pullups (3 sets of 7). then brisk walk @ 4mph for 13 mins and then run at 6 mph for 12 mins and then really run at 9 mph for 1 min. followed by sauna :)

guitar - totally missed out on this. by the time I can home and was done with cooking it was 11 and I had to get up early today. Not that 10 mins of practise would have killed me, but hindsight is always perfect. Have to get to this today ..

Happy Turkey day y'all !
