Powerlifting Singlets

Nyx

Recommended Posts

I'm competing in my first powerlifting competition in two and a half weeks, and the singlet that I ordered arrived in the mail today.  Unfortunately, upon inspection, it is not legal for the federation that I am competing in.

The rules:

A non-supportive singlet of any color is required for all state, national and world meets. Straps

must be worn over the shoulders during the performance of a lift. The lifting singlet shall consist
of a one-piece full-length suit of one-ply stretch material without any additional patches or padding
that may add additional support to the garment. The crotch of the singlet must have a single seam.
Singlets with double parallel or vertical seams are prohibited. Singlets made of denim, canvas or
include buttons, straps or Velcro is not permitted.

This is what I got.  Several of the reviewers said that they used it for powerlifting, but it has the double parallel crotch seams and so it is not going to work for me.

Before I order something else this close to competition that also ends up not working, I was hoping for some recommendations.  I would prefer a women's singlet, but that is probably a tall order, and so at this point I would love suggestions for something that follows the federation's rules and can get here in time.  (For example, I'm not sure an Inzer singlet would get here in time, from what I read about their shipping time.)  None of my local stores carry singlets, men's or women's, which is crazy because I am in a major metropolitan area and I would think that I could get just about anything here.

Also, any insight you can give about sizing would be great.  I ordered that one based on the size chart and it is a bit snugger than I expected.

Thanks!

Nyx, generally, singlets should be somewhat snug.  I compete in Olympic Weightlifting, and those singlets are snug also.  I'm not super familiar with the double parallel seam issue you're having.  I would try looking at eastbay and finding a wrestling singlet on there, maybe something with single seam in the description??  Also, there are several other powerlifting equipment suppliers.  Titan and EliteFTS come to mind.  Try those.

I usually wear spandex shorts to work out and am fine with that level of snugness, but I was getting a bit of the thigh version of muffin top with this one.

I'm checking out all of those stores.  Titan has one that is says is legal in all raw events, which looks very promising.

Thanks a lot!

Are you doing the American open? It fits your timeline and I ask as I am participating and it's my first meet.

I just ordered the Adidas single stripe from here:

http://www.scoreboardwrestling.net

Hoping to get it this weekend or early next week. Totally forgot to check it against USAPL specifications. If it doesn't fit, I'll be driving all over Philly and Delaware looking for a singlet.

Okay- I'll bite- what's the big deal with double seam vs single seam?

That seems (see what I did there) like the DUMBEST rule ever- is there a logical reason for that?

Probably some very small advantage you can get form a singlet that is made with a double seem. Some of the rules re dumb, such as them not considering Vibrams an athletic shoe, so they are not legal to lift in. I had to go buy Chucks.

yeah I'm not buying that at all.... lol I suspect it's because "that's what we've always done"

is the rule and it was before someone was smart enough to realize that you can get two seams to make a better fitting more comfortable garmet- GASP- how dare you be comfortable why you lift!!!! LMAO

Its best not to try and understand the logic behind anything the USAPL does. Not all feds are as rigid. Here's the USPA's, a more lifter friendly fed, rules.

Item 1. Singlet
3.1.1 The singlet shall consist of a one-piece full length-lifting suit of single-ply stretch material that is
non - supportive. Supportive is defined as either the type of material used in the construction of the
garment, or the excessive tightness of the garment when worn by the lifter, or a combination of the
two. The construction of the suit must be without any patches or padding. Any seams, false or
otherwise, that in the opinion of the referees are incorporated into the costume purely as a form of
reinforcement or bracing, shall invalidate the costume from being used in the competition. The
costume must be form fitting without any looseness when worn by the lifter. The straps must be
worn over the shoulders at all times while lifting in competition.

2 seams might open up the possibility of using a different type of fabric for the material between.

manufacturing issue.... it's not that hard to cut it all out of the same material.

I sew- a single seam in the crotch is the worst thing known to man kind- puts more wear and tear on the seams and from where I sit there is no legitimate reason to make an inferior less fitted garment other than to be douchebags. LOL

no- not trying to be argumentative- I realize demz the rulz and that's all there is to it- I just think it's epically stupid.

I ordered the Titan singlet and am just waiting for it to show up now.  Maybe today?

I can't see much of an actual advantage to double seams.  I sometimes wear workout shorts with single seams and sometimes with double seams, and I can't tell any performance difference between the two, either.  I will not argue with you about it being epically stupid.

Gainsdalf, you're participating in your first meet, too?  That's awesome!  I'd love to hear how it goes.  This one is with the Raw Powerlifting Federation.  The competition is only bench/deadlift/strict curl (strict curl?!) but they're the only federation that seems to have a decent number of meets near me, and I've read that when you're first starting out, just go with what's near you and then start worrying about the ins and outs of all of the federations if you get to the point where you want to travel for meets.  I am not happy about not squatting, though.  It's my favorite and strongest move.  Well, technically deadlift is stronger, but I've had problems getting that up to where I want it to be.

My Adidas singlet did not comply, will be returning it. Just ordered a Titan, which specifically stated it's good in all RAW federations, hopefully it gets here on time.

Frack.  My Titan singlet showed up, and it has what are, in my understanding, double crotch seams.  But it says it is legal for all RAW federations, and I see pictures on the federation's website of people competing in them.  (This is why I ordered it.)  I took pictures and sent it to the meet director, to see if it's okay.  Fingers crossed.

It is also a little too short in the torso, and a bit baggy in the waist.  I expected that it would not dip in at the waist as much as I am used to, because men don't really have curves.  But aren't men supposed to be tall?  WHY IS IT SHORT?

Yes, I know it is not a fashion show.  If it works per the meet director, I'm using it.

Is your competition a "state, national, or world meet"? If not, it sounds like they may not be as anal about the specifics.

Mine is national.

I need to call Titan today to make sure it'll arrive on time. I've been emailing with no reply.

Funny story. I called to find out, and they said there was a 6-8 week lead time for it. Since I needed it by Sunday, they said the only thing they could get me by then would be whatever was in stock. That turned out to be a bright purple singlet and nothing else. Should be arriving today.

It's here and is a little snug, but that was expected with me being the top end weight for the size. It'll fit better once I lose the weight, but by no means looks bad. Can see all my business though. The purple isn't bad like I expected, I think I actually like it with all the red.
