Fellowship of the Bat!

Recommended Posts

Mine started with me having the plague (okay, norovirus, which is like the worst stomach flu in the world for 3 days). So on the one hand I didn't eat anything bad (because I pretty much couldn't eat anything!) on the other I didn't get out of bed. Still recovering a bit but the only good thing about this virus is that you feel horrible for like 3 days but then you're pretty much all better. Still weak from not eating, so trying to take it easy. But I'm going to the gym tonight for some strength work, and will do a run of some sort tomorrow--just going to see how I feel and not push it too much. Still actually feeling good about my dedication to the challenge. Getting dumped didn't derail me last time, a little stomach virus is nothing in comparison!

Thanks for the inspiration! I kind of am a polar bear though. Just sayin.' I'm glad to hear you're feeling better. Any kind of flu sucks, but that sounds brutal.

I had mixed results this week. I went to the gym after work (10:30 or 11 at night) despite trying to talk myself out of it. Win! Then on Friday night, my sister drove up here from San Diego, which was awesome, but it has a derailing effect so I didn't run or lift.

That was temporary though. No excuses. Today is my resting day and tomorrow I'm going to run or climb so I can get my strength days on a Tuesday Thursday Saturday schedule. Good stuff!

BTW, has anyone watched DC's animated content lately? So good. I watched Crisis On Two Earths on Friday. It was good, but Batman was voiced by William Baldwin and OwlMan was voiced by James Woods. It was distracting. I kind of prefer when it's just voice actors, rather than movie stars doing voices. Thoughts?

Had a cold, backed up for several days by a stomach bug, so did 1 day of excercise last week. Back at it today though. I've let illness knock me off 3 different NF challenges but not this!

Can I get a Starship Troopers style "Hoo-ah!!" ?

Hi, everyone!  Sorry to disappear like I did and just leave everything on Anathema without even telling her anything.   :disturbed:  I hit holiday-craziness and then have been slogging through a patch of winter depression since then.  I'm not really in this challenge (although I just realized it's only a week and a half in so it would still be perfectly fine to join at this date) but I am trying to focus on getting my sugar consumption back under control again, as well as walking outdoors whenever possible.  I'm doing yet another walking challenge with friends; Rouen to Paris this time.  I'm only half a mile behind the leader at the moment!

Y'all are in my heart and thoughts!  Kill this challenge.  Hopefully I'll be feeling up to the next one!  I'll keep checking in~

Hey, glad to hear you're around, sorry to hear things being icky. I was starting to get pretty winter-affected myself over the holidays; my doctor has me trying one of those light box-therapy things. I kinda think it's working? Or maybe I'm just convincing myself that it is. Anyway, we miss you and can't wait for your triumphant Batmanly return!

Whatever the reason, at least something seems to be working.

Good to hear from you, Vortex! We'll hold it down on this end while you take care of yourself. Check in sometimes :-)

I was travelling for business and didn't really stick to my goals as well as I could have. On the other hand, I walked a ton (it was a big trade show where I spent lots of time walking around looking at exhibits and stuff) and didn't eat toooooooo badly.

Today I went for a 13-mile run even though I hadn't really done my training during the week. So, my pace was not very fast but I did it! And it was like 80 degrees out, but luckily there was a bit of wind off the ocean so I didn't totally wilt.

The state of California just declared an official drought. Day by day it's nice that it's all warm and sunny, but of course we're running out of water, and that also means very little snow in the mountains. That $450 season pass for snowboarding might turn out to have been a bad idea (requires 6 trips to pay for itself--last year that was no problem. This year we've gone once and it was a  pretty low-snow day, we just couldn't wait. There's some hope it might rain in February . . .)

Bought tons of fruit & veggies and ready to rock Week 3!

How did week 2 go?

I used one of my exceptions and everything else went swimmingly! I also did a ritual dunking in a frozen lake today!

Where do you live??  They totally just did that here this past weekend for Russian Orthodox New year...  (And by here I mean Kazakhstan, which is the latest crazy place I'm living)

Soooo hi, I'm late to the group-joining part of the challenge because the last couple of weeks were nothing if not interesting. Let's just say after spending the holidays back home in the US I returned to Kazakhstan to an unhappy run-in with illness and chaos at work.  So weeks 1 and 2 were really difficult, but since the end of last week I've been working really hard at getting back on track.  One thing I still struggle with, though, is feeling like I have a million things to fit into my day and running out of steam when it comes time to head to the gym (I seriously struggle with that more than anything).

Anyway, I know these forums are a good place to check in generally, but if there's anyone who wants to use PM or email to check in more frequently or to just go into more detail feel free to hit me up, I'm here to help (and be helped, I hope!).

Oh, and just to clear this up, Christian Bale is the real Batman and Chicago is the real Gotham.  Whoo, that felt good to get out!

I am currently living in Siberia! Did you participate? It was crazy cold and crazy awesome all at the same time!

I agree that Christian Bale is the real live-action Batman. But Kevin Conroy is the only voice actor for me!

Siberia?  Okay, you're even more intense than I am!  I didn't participate because I had no idea it was happening until it was happening!  :P  I'll have to plan on it for next year.

I will totally allow you your Kevin Conroy because I'm too busy being in awe of how good Mark Hamill is as the Joker.  Who saw that coming??

Kazakstan is not too far away from Russia and Siberia! If you will be in the region when it happens next year, same Bat date, you should definitely participate.

I would love to go to a panel with Mark Hamil and Kevin Conroy and listen to them speak as Batman and the Joker! When I was a kid I had no idea Mark Hamil was the Joker.

Well, I could go all Yoda with the "there is not try, there is only do" . . . but actually I think continuing to try and not giving up in the face of adversity / distractons / setbacks is pretty darn key. I went off the rails a bit last week with business travel, but I kept trying to stick with it as much as I could, and I'm sure that's why I came back quickly to my program. Because I didn't actually go face down in a Las Vegas fried-food buffet. Actually, I did, but only once. And (this is going to sound mean, but it's true), by sheer chance I was seated near two girls (late teens? Early 20s?) who fulfilled every stereotype about overweight Americans. And they were eating all the fried, so that was sort of inspiration to me to not go back for fourth helpings . . .

I've been doing well this week. And then I go all super PMS-y and ate 6 mini candy bars last night. Wednesday is supposed to be swing dance night, but all of my friends bailed for various reasons. Oy. The only good thing is that, once it became clear dance night wasn't happening, I decided to burn off the excess calories anyway instead of just going home and sulking. So, took the really really long route to my train stop. It's usually about a 15-minute walk, I took this crazy circular route up a bunch of steep hills (I work in San Francisco, so there are some very steep hills available near my work!), made it an hour+ walk. And woke up this morning having lost rather than gained weight, so on balance I'm happy!

It's the last week of the challenge, bats!  How's everyone doing?  I'm chomping at the bit for the next challenge.  I've half-heartedly tried to do some stuff these last few weeks, but I learned how valuable accountability to one's team is, as well as the feedback and support.  Physical-activity wise, I've been horrid, but I've been eating very well overall with the exception of some sugar-creep in my diet. It's so hard to resist in the depths of winter, though!  I suppose the next challenge will be back to basics for me, but that's fine.

My yoga class starts up again tonight, so I'm psyched for that!
