   Children Of The North

For those who fight with all the fury of wolves, the force of a snowstorm, the strength of a bear, the knowledge of the owl or the grace of the deer, you'll find brothers and sisters here!

This group isn't just for those who call themselves warriors - all are welcome - hunters, skalds, warriors, etc. Or as they call them here, Rangers and Assassins and Scouts and such. Experienced Longfang or uninitiated Wolfcub, you are welcome in the Long Hall to share your stories and triumphs, drink something and fill your bellies with the best we have to offer. Pull up a chair by the fire, friend, and let me tell you a tale of victory. We're all brothers and sisters here, fighting against the cold.

Join me on the epic quest! We gotta stick together for this. Yeah I do silly things like side quests and stuff in my accountability groups just for fun. I love having themes and such, and pushing the Nerd side of Nerd Fitness in different ways with stories and characters... or maybe i just need a better way to spend my time. Oh well, haha!

Come join the clan and may the Old Gods smile upon you!

About This Group

We're all going to be here for each other - thats how this works. A few ways we can do this are;

  • G+ Hangouts - group video chats that are free and easy to use. Very useful.
  • Ill make a spreadsheet we can all access and put out workouts into. Then we can see who's not been going too well.
  • If you're ok with it we can all add each other on Facebook and Twitter. Ill give out my usernames for both later when we have more people.
  • Come on IRC as often as you can - everyone on there is amazing and its good fun in there. You can join through the chat room button, up there in the top bar ^

Also, ill post random little things in here as often as possible - weekly challenges from the NF guild leaders, workout songs, etc etc. The point of this thread is to let us all know how you're doing, so maybe do a weekly summary here and just join in the conversations, the bigger the better!

Okay, I'm in!

Hi everyone! I'm a 29 year old living in the Southwest US. I am an NCSF certified personal trainer and fitness nutritionist who is back in school to complete 2 degrees in the health field. I also work full time, so between work & school life is always busy. I'm a tattoo junkie (currently have 20 of them) and am a total book nerd (I read 315 books in 2013!). I'm currently healing from a knee injury, so everything will be slow going at first, but I'm looking forward to all the progress I can make in 2014 and all the new friends I can make on this site  :joyous:

I shall spread the love for sure! And I will read a little bit of everything - sci-fi, fantasy, dystopian, fitness (yeah I dig fitness books!), romance, mystery....pretty much anything that sounds interesting. I currently have about 1,000 unread books on my Kindle and about 500 on my Nook so I always have something to read....and yes, I am that much of a nerd that I have a Kindle *AND* an Nook  :playful:

Since you're a book-nerd too, do you know the joys of Goodreads?? I'm on there too so if you are let me know and I'll friend you there

I do not, but i shall google it and see! I get most of my books from the libraries around the city, or I, um, find them. Yeah, find them.

*cough*

Anyway - for sci fi, have you read Dune? its amazing. Also good is the fantasy series Dwarves by Marcus Heitz and as for poetry, the Infernal Comedy or the Saga of Beowulf are personal favourites :P

HAHAHAHAHA!!! Yeah....I *find* mine too....being a book-nerd can be super expensive! I've never read Dune, but I've heard its good. In the fantasy world, I really liked the Sword of Truth series - those ones were really good. I love the Divine Comedy & I'm currently trying to figure out how to work some of his pieces into future tattoo work

Beowulf is always a classic! I just read the 5th book in a fantasy/sci-fi/romance series about the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse...its a super fun one! I'm always looking for new books to read!

Let me know if you make a Goodreads profile. Its basically a site for book-nerds to become friends & share/find new books, track reading goals, etc

How about graphic novels/comics? Do you read them often? And i can 110% recommend Dune.

Yup - total comic nerd too! I currently have subscriptions to Hawkeye (the new one), Saga, Thor, Gambit (before they canceled it) & a few others. I'm a few months behind on reading some of them, so I need to find time to do that soon. Absolute loves are Sandman & Preacher

HAHAHA! Yeah Saga is amazing! I'm about 2 issues behind - with finals & stuff I wasn't able to read the latest issues, but I will sit down and tear through them soon  :joyous:

I've got the Sandman Overture coming in my comic box as well - I was super excited when that one came out! The artwork is beautiful! I've never heard of East of West, but will definitely check it out. And I just went to her page - she's definitely got some Sandman-style in some of her drawings. I liked the page so if she ever wants any feedback, just let me know  :joyous:

Greetings!

I'm Trevor, hailing from the beautiful Pacific Northwest (US).  I'm 45, but that is more of a data point than a defining characteristic, and I sure as hell don't act like it.  By day I'm a mobile product manager for a rather large ecommerce company, and by night I am an explorer of other times and places, either through reading, movies, or gaming.  I have a particular taste for Nordic and Germanic history and culture, as well as most things dark, morbid, and discomfort-making.

As I mention in my challenge thread, my current motivation is getting fit enough to take my pup hiking and camping this summer.  Given that I currently can't walk around the block without back & hip pain and being winded, I've got my work cut out for me.  The general strategy for this challenge is to focus on stamina (several daily small walks) and dexterity (yoga), coupled with weight-loss and strength training.  As things improve, I will adjust/fine-tune future challenges as needed.

To help with making this initial challenge a success, I've arranged to take a month-long leave of absence from work, which will allow me to focus on the initial lifestyle changes without the stress and responsibilities of the job.  Which is a good thing, 'cause lack of cheap carbs and plentiful exercise makes me rather cranky at first...

Welcome, Ravnos!

Is it Monday yet?

Thanks! I know, right? I pretty never take breaks between challenges but I let myself "slip" a bit for Xmas and enjoyed some cookies and stuff I normally wouldn't eat, so I'm looking forward to jumping back on the bandwagon.

Morning! This intrigues me, mostly because when I saw Children of the Northlands I was like 'THAT'S ME!!' xD

I'm Rebecca, from the North East of England, I'm going on 23, and I'm in my final year of my pharmacy degree, and next year I'm going to be a married lady! In my spare time (which unfortunately doesn't happen very often) I like rollerblading, knitting, watching TV, reading/writing and playing on my PS2 (y). My goal for this challenge is to get back into my skinny jeans by my birthday in 5 weeks time, as such I'm going to be walking a whole lot more and just generally taking better care of myself. Though the ultimate goal to my fitness is to look bloody gorgeous on my wedding day xD.

Alright, time for the formal introduction I guess.

Hello fellow Northerners. I'm Ravnos, better known as Ian in some circles. I hail from New England, specifically the Boston area of Massachusetts. It is very snowy here this morning, which excites me a great deal. I'm a writer, technology journalist and blogger by trade, horror writer by preference. I studied Philosophy and Religion in college and hope to one day go back to teach. I'm engaged, have two cats and enjoy reading (horror, fantasy, sci-fi, comics, noir thrillers and classics mostly), playing video games and tabletop RPGs, watching movies, zombies and many, many other things. I'm also a bit of a jack of all trades. I spent a summer remodeling a house, I can fix pretty much anything smaller than a car and I am a musician as well (singer primary, but I play several instruments as well).

I think that's pretty much all there is to know about me. My fitness journey began in February of 2013 when I began eating paleo/primal. Since then I've lost around 40-45 pounds (18 kg for those of you who use a measuring system that makes sense) and dropped several pant sizes. I found Nerd Fitness in August and this is my fourth challenge, second one with the Rangers.

Looking forward to rocking this challenge with you all.
