As we approach the official start of this challenge, I have two questions for everyone:

Have you already started your challenge? I started on Monday because I don't like taking breaks between challenges, it's like "cheat" days... they really do more harm than good in the long run and there's no reason to take a break in my strategy for bettering my life. Just curious who has already launched into their goals.

What kind of music do you guys listen to? Do you listen to a different kind of music when working out to get you pumped up, or do you just go with whatever is on at the gym (if you workout at a gym)? I'm a bit of a metal head, so I listen to the heavy stuff, although I grew up on Classical, Broadway, Blues, Jazz and classic R&B/Soul... so I have an appreciation for almost everything. (Note: Your responses to this will impact any workout songs I post here over the course of the challenge ;) )

Hi Ravnos! Its nice to meet you! I don't blame you - I can see the breaks as being "cheat" days too.

I have halfway started my challenge. For my supporting quests, I've gotten my eating back in line and started doing my "2 miles a day" portion of my quest as of January 1st. I'm going to be starting a lifting plan on Monday and that will integrate itself into everything I've already started. I took measurements & starting pics on the 1st, but I'm dropping water weight pretty quickly so I am going to do them again on Sunday/Monday to get a more accurate reading of my "starting" measurements

And as far as music, I love anything other than scream-o heavy metal (there has to be some melody in there), hardcore hip hop & super twangy country. My iPod is a mish-mash of 70's music to today in many different genres. I've got about 40GB of music on my iPod and a bunch of different playlists, but my current "Running/Boxing Workout" playlist consists of Avicii, Adam Lambert, BigBang (Korean pop band), Avenged Sevenfold, The Killers, Nightwish, Backstreet Boys (yes, I have no shame...I still love them and I don't care what anyone says!), Muse, Ke$ha, David Guetta, Bruno Mars, Insane Clown Posse, Jimmy Eat World, H.I.M., AFI, Fun, Bad Religion, MCR, Sick Puppies, VNV Nation, Pitbull, Linkin Park, La Roux, Cascada, Eminem, Breaking Benjamin, Good Charlotte, Gorillaz, Lostprophets, Jay-Z, Pink, Shiny Toy Guns, ABBA & Queen.

So...yeah....I have kind of a WIDE range of musical loves  :highly_amused:

Indeed you do. I can't stand pop/dance/rap for the most part, or country - I hate music that sounds manufactured/uses autotune. I'd also argue the lack of melody in screamy heavy metal, but this is neither the time nor the place haha (it also depends on what you're specifically referring to). So I can appreciate about half that playlist lol. Although I do have a secret enjoyment for Backstreet Boys - I blame my fiancee because she listens to pop a lot. She's also who introduced me to HIM though, so I can't complain.

Let's do this!

HAHA your fiancee has good taste in music then! H.I.M. has been a staple in my playlists for a few years now - I totally love them. And I agree that there's sometimes melody in screamy metal, but if I can't sing along to it, I can't listen to it. All that growling/screaming just isn't good for my voice  :joyous:

And its okay, I'll keep your love for BSB a secret (for now anyways....you might find some posted a few weeks down the line! :playful: )

Yeah they're solid (HIM). Although I wasn't huge on their last album.

I'm actually a singer in a metal band, so I'm biased? LOL

It's cool, I embrace my inner BSB fan. Or something like that...

I haven't started my challenge yet. Well....not really. I've started having my smoothies again, but I have yet to purchase any protein powder so they're a bit naff as meal replacements because I don't like adding yogurt or anything like that into them. But I'm back at uni on Monday and my meal plan for the first week is done and come Monday I'll be working on my one for the following week so I can budget and be good :).

I do listen to different music when working out....sometimes. If I'm not doing zombies run then I generally throw on some Now 85 and listen to whatever was big in the world of pop this year. Something dance-y with a good beat to keep me moving. However, my zombies run playlist is a little different; Limp Bizkit - Break Something, Dragonforce - Through the Fire and the Flames, Icon for Hire - Theatre, System of a Down - Bounce, Skrillex - Bangarang...I think you get the picture haha.

But I love everything. I love good old country music to rap to r&b to pop to electro to rock, punk, metal and everything in between! I LOVE a bit of Neil Diamond or Cliff Richard or Kenny Rogers, but I also adore Nightwish and HIM and Bullet for my Valentine. However, I think if I had to pick my favourite it would be Tool. Tool is my go to when I don't know what else I want to listen to haha. That and A Perfect Circle...which makes sense. It's not just the music with Tool either, but the complexity with which they make it. One of their songs changes their time key based on the fibonacci sequence....that's a new level of anality to me and I LOVE it!

Hi everyone! I hope you don't mind me joining this awesome group.

I'm Nina, German and a bookworm. I'm 30, married with two little ones (7 and as good as 3).

I haven't posted my challenge thread yet but will do so later today (at least that's the plan ;) ) I started with getting my diet back on track on the first and did a trial run of the exercises I'll be doing come next week. I wanted to start exercising for reals this week but had a pretty bad die-off going on from the diet change (yet again :( ).

Anyways, exited to do another challenge, looking forward to getting to know you all!

Ok, this looks like an interesting and energetic guild - can I join?  Pretty please??

My challenge (overall and the next 6-week) is in my signature..

Me, I'm 53 and live in the northern US - currently in SE Wisconsin, but I'm from Minnesota and lived most of my adult life near the Canadian border (where it is colder than a landlord's heart this winter).  And I tend to play northern human races when I do D&D or Guild Wars or Skyrim or ..... (yea - I'm an educational games researcher and I do love RPGs). I will be teaching a couple of classes next term - so I have freedom and flexibility for chats and such.  I am also a new member of the Nerd Fitness Academy.

Generally, I KNOW how to be healthy and have often been very fit.  But I have a hard time when the stress level gets too high and I start eating and stop working out.

Yes, I have already begun working on my goals for the next challenge.  I'm on week 4 of C25K, have been cutting out alcohol gradually, joined NFA, and have finished the first self esteem CD while driving around town.  This year, I'm going to DO IT!!

I'm gonna try this.... I'm gonna try being in 2 guilds at the same time.   I suck at intros too.

I'm Melissa - single mom of 2 girls, third time trying a challenge - third times the charm, right? If you want to know more about me please ask.

The link to my challenge is in my signature.

Edited version

I have been told by SOMEONE that I need to try again on my intro.  So here goes:

I am a single mom of 2 beautiful girls, one is - ack - 14 and the other is almost 10.  They have a very hard relationship with their father, which then gets me involved in stuff that I really don't want or need to be involved in.   But me being the better parent,   I have been divorced - THANKFULLY - from him for almost 6 years now.  I had been with him for 9 years. ---- which I shouldn't have even been with him that long.  It wasn't a good relationship. (that is part of what my journaling will be about)  There actually has been lots of stuff going on in my life lately that has made this journey very hard.  I will get there.

If you wanna know more about me or what's been going on feel free to ask.  I have found that its really helpful to talk about it.

(Happy now????    :P    )

Well, I've been a gamer all of my life, and have a background in computer science and software development ..... then I went for graduate degrees in education.  For my doctorate, I focused on educational uses of computer and video games.  The good news is that I do get to play games and run after school programs for kids and test educational games.  The bad news is that I spend a lot of time analyzing games, what kids learn from them, and what the problems are .... which is significantly less fun.

I try to avoid researching games and virtual worlds that I actually LIKE to play.  I did a study on World of Warcraft and ended up not playing that for months afterwards.  So I learned my lesson and have focused more on the Sims (which I hate) and Gaia Online (don't like, but I knew tweens and teens who loved it).

Welcome brother.

Based on the forum telling me you posted at 8:23am my time (EST) - you're timezone is most likely UTC+1 (which covers most of Europe), so you're looking at 02:00, wee hours of the morning, for the Friday Hangout.
