Raptron's First Gymnastics Meet

Ah I see, seems like fun. If I'd ever want to try this, I probably would need to practice those rudimentary skills with an instructor. I really want to but heh, not going to happen for a long time I already have so many goals on my bucketlist! The only one I'm going to add is the split to handstand, because the split and handstand were already goals of mine, and this is just icing on the cake!

My gym also has instructed classes during the times I am there for open gym work, and that's actually how I got started back into gymnastics last summer. The class difficulty depends on the level of the people in the class, but you get lots of drills and they are good about working you up to things like round offs, handsprings, and tucks.

This list is kept relatively updated for the US (less so for other countries), but there may be a place that teaches adult gymnastics near you:

Thanks, Slyph and Obax! I think you underestimate what you could probably manage, Obax. ;)

Day 1.2

Gym gym. Nothing special, but I put in my time in the rack and then I had to hustle home to make sure my slow cooker beef was surviving okay. I also did my WOD today, though no running post-lifting.

Stayed at 185 squat, 60 on OHP, and 195 on my deadlifts.

I AM doing stairs tomorrow morning with RisenPhoenix though! That should... be interesting.

Um, that would be amazing. Stopping all that momentum looks crazy hard!

Don't be so hard on yourself about the snacks. You're doing a great job (like seriously I'ms o impressed reading what you've done in the first week and a bit) and it's just one more thing to check off the list. You can conquer it!

Oh, I'm not too beat up about it, but I wasn't meeting the goals I set for myself. It's going better this week though, but we'll see when we get to the weekend.

Also I forgot, congrats on the most wanted! Can't wait to see what you do this week :D

Thanks! It's a less crazy week because I have much more social stuff going on, but I think I'll do alright. ;)

I followed the most wanted assassins list to this thread and.... Wow! So much cool stuff is happening here!!

I love your back walkover on the balance beam! I know you were critiquing your form.... but I thought it looked pretty flash!!!

Congrats on being awesome!!!! :) :) (I didn't know the appropriate amount of exclamation marks to put there... so I put four)

Four exclamation points?! I must be special! :D Thanks for the compliments! When I finally make the back walkover tutorial video, I'll take a new one of my walkover on beam to show off my fancier, better form.

Um, that would be amazing. Stopping all that momentum looks crazy hard!

Oh yeah, I don't think I could learn it soon or anything, but I'd love to keep it on my radar. We do a drill for back handsprings that involves trying to stop in a handstand during the handspring and press down to prone. They're extremely difficult -- though I think the gainer/twisting type action going on in this particular example would help slow the backwards rotation.

Day 2.3

This day is totally a rest day... stadium stairs don't count. I finally made it to a November Project with at the Harvard Stadium this morning, thanks to carpooling/peer pressure from RisenPhoenix. Waking up at 5:30 AM and running stairs before work isn't really my idea of a good time, but I have to say that it leaves you feeling pretty accomplished when you walk in office.

The prescribed workout was 50 sections of stairs in the Harvard Stadium -- run up the seats, walk down the stairs. It might be lame of me, but after 5 sections, I decided that my personal goal was to make it through 20 sections. I managed 23. I really wish I had pushed through another 2 sections to get at least half the prescribed, which seemed to be a popular option for a lot of the people there this morning, but I did not, unfortunately.

My knee was bothering me a lot going DOWN the stairs rather than up the seats, which was annoying, but not incapacitating.

Today was a big fat reminder that I need to do much more endurance cardio work because I think my legs were ready to keep going but I just couldn't suck air fast enough to keep up with them. That said, I'm not unhappy with my morning, but wished I pushed myself a little bit harder. As slight punishment for taking it easier and because I had time to kill before work started, I walked the 2.7 miles from the Stadium to my office with about a ~21 lb backpack. Mini ruck!

I've got nothing on the board workout-wise tonight because I am going to the MFA for the John Singer Sargent watercolors exhibit or tomorrow evening because I am donating blood. Despite that, I may do a quick WOD or some handstand work, but mostly I'll be cooking and cleaning in preparation for my birthday party this weekend. :D

This is NOT LAME.  You skipped the newbie meeting because you were technically not a newbie.  But at that meeting, they would have pointed out that 20 sections is a lot for your first time out.  It's such a different workout than any other.  Interestingly, I managed 20 sections my first time out.

There is only one way to get better at running stairs.  And, that's by running more stairs.  But, it is never easy.  And, that's (one of the reasons) why I love it.

You did awesome!  So glad you came out to play!

Also... just noticed how similar these numbers are to my own.  You are a bad ass!

So. Many. Crazy. People.

Crazy is good.  Crazy is great.  Except - don't date crazy crazy.  And, if you do date crazy crazy, absolutely do not marry them.  I've made that mistake.  Trust me, it's no good.

@AgentSka -- You are just the best ray of encouragement of all time. I had no real context for how many sections would be a good start, but I was a bit relieved when I spied people sucking air in the upper bleacher area while I was still going. Also, you had Andrew Ference at your first November Project!! So not fair! I miss that man.

As for the lifts, pshaw. You'll be blowing me out of the water soon, I'm sure. I've been stuck at that deadlift for ages. Perhaps I'll get some pointers in Texas though. :D

@Mad Hatter -- EVEN MORE than pictured. I took that picture about halfway through, so there were probably double that amount!

@Max Curtis -- They're huge stairs too. I'm not sure exactly how tall, but it's like deep lunge territory for me to go from one to the other on the ascent. I feel pretty good with my 23 sections as long as I improve it next time. :)

I like to think I'm moderately fit. Then I meet stairs and I crumple and die. It's amazing you did 23 I mean wow that looks so high! Are you going to do it a next time? I'm sure you'll be able to beat your number then!

I miss him too.  He is awesome.  But, two great things about him.

1.  On his last day at the stadium he brought about 300 of the best cupcakes ever.

2.  Literally the week he got to Edmonton, he started the Edmonton chapter.

I'm not going to be doing it every week, but I'll be going periodically, especially if I get to hang out with Ska and RP while I'm there. :)

Not saying it's bad. Just that's there's unexpectedly many of them. ;)

And yes definitely avoid dating crazies. I once had a crazy stalker. But at least I didn't date or marry him. :P

I might be able to do 2 sections if there was the option to roll down them after the climb.....
