Nymeria soaks in the bacta tank - (ACL reconstruction and rehab log)

Recommended Posts

It's early Thursday morning. I'm starting to get a bit anxious. I'm definitely not in the proper frame of mind to do anything remotely productive today and probably tomorrow

Surgery done! The doctor said everything went really well. I was his second ACL repair of the morning, so he really does a lot of these.

Other than feeling like someone took a hammer to my knee repeatedly, and than it is about to explode, I'm doing okay. I hope the pain meds take off a bit more of the edge.

The pain is pretty bad, but just about everyone who has had ACL surgery told me that the first 3 days are pretty nasty. At least I'm on the path to healing and recovery.

Very glad everything went well!

Have you ever read online strips? Maybe that'll keep your mind off the pain.

Thanks for all of the support! :)

I'm not feeling all that bad as long as I use my pain meds. Sleeping was a bit rough last night, though.

Now that I'm more coherent:

Yesterday, while I waited at the surgery center, I found out that I was my dr's second ACL repair of the day, and there was another right after me. So, he does a lot of ACLs in a year.

The surgery took a little over an hour, and while I ended up needing a little meniscus "clean up", I didn't need any actual repair.

When I returned to consciousness, my leg was tightly wrapped from thigh to heel in a thick ace bandage. Unfortunately, it's so thick that I can't feel the ice packs under it.

The doctor did not use a femoral nerve block, so I didn't get the half day of being pain free. Instead, they wanted me to be able to weight bear without having my leg crumble under me. I have to keep my leg brace locked out at full extension for any weight bearing, though.

Starting late afternoon yesterday, I already started with the rehab, which is mostly a set of quad and hamstring isometrics as well as some extension and flexion ROM work. It takes maybe 5 minutes, but I have to do them every hour. I've also worked on weight bearing while standing. Although the doctor said I'm allowed to try to walk on the injured foot a bit, I'm waiting for some of the pain and swelling to recede. Plus, I get to remove the bulky outer dressings tomorrow, which means I will be able to ice my leg much more effectively after any weight bearing attempts.

My doctor wants full extension and 90 degree flexion after a week. I think I can press into full extension now, and at worst, I'm only a few degrees away. I'm maybe at 70 degrees flexion, which seems pretty good for being 1 day out from the surgery.
