Darkfoxx 8: Never Leave An Unkicked Ass Behind

Ok, so I went off on a little tangent when trying to come up with the theme of this challenge cycle. My Die Hard references evaporated months ago, and I’m too lazy to look for awesome nerdy .gifs. So, tangent time.

Like my girl and NF partner in crime Fonzico, this is my one-year nerdaversary as well. W00t W00t.

palinraisetheroof.gif <<< hey, lookee there, it’s a gif.

diehard-diehard.gif Boom, bitchez.

I can’t freakin believe I’ve stuck with this Nerd Fitness business for a year - a whole. freakin. year. And I’m not even ‘over it’ yet. This is pretty much unprecedented, and I have my merry band of constant friends to thank for it. Thanks guys for the support, the harassment, the ass kickings, the internet parties, the woots, and the loves — I totally wouldn’t still be on this journey if I had to go it alone.

*ahem* Tough it up, there, Darkfoxx - enough of the mushy stuff and on with the show.

Main Quest

My overarching mega goal still hasn’t changed - I’m still pumped about doing Mudderella in May. This has been my goal to work toward for 3 challenges now, and I’d like to think that everything I have done in that time gets me a little closer to my goal of finishing all 5-7 miles without dying. I’m still nervous and excited about Mudderella - and I only have 5 months to go!

Goal 1

Fitness. I’ll fully admit I’ve been a complete and utter slackass the last week of 2013/this first week of 2014. I finished last cycle (barely) - and then family came to town. Sure, we walked a bunch (I clocked 9 miles one day, with 3-something as my lowest day), but that’s all I did. And I ate like there was no tomorrow. Carbs akimbo. This week I’ve done exactly zero of the things. I nursed a cold and watched Twilight Zone. Twilight Zone isn’t going to help me get to Mudderella. Working out will.

So, I’m going back to my old favorite - HasFit. I’ll be starting up the crazy intense Hero 90 program at the start of this challenge, and it will run me all through this cycle and the next. After this craziness, I’d *better* be able to Mudderella - it looks intense (in a good way). I’ve missed Coach K and it will be good to have him egging me on again.

Goal 2

Metrics and Moar metrics. My diet has gotten away from me at the end of this year - hellooooo white potatoes - and I need to button that shit back up. Goals are the usual 100 grams or under of carbs, 70 grams or over of protein and 1500 or so calories. I’m still doing My Fitness Pal - and I’m adding my new buddy - the FitBit Flex to the mix. Not only will I be tracking my food this go round, I’ll also be tracking water (again - I slipped on my water intake during our weeks off), sleep patterns, steps, and fitness minutes.

Goal 3

Keep this ‘moving rapidly through space’ thing up a little. This can’t be a hard and fast goal. I know HasFit is going to completely kick my ass. I know it’s the middle of winter. But … I found myself actually enjoying going out and doing my Zombies, Run 5k trainer — even at 30 (or even 20) degrees. And I have the gear for it, so I’d like to keep it up. I will consider even one extra time out a success here. Week 3 has a prescribed 60 minutes of cardio (+ 6 minutes of abs) day - and I’ll definitely go out for that - the plan is to do 2 regular Zombies, Run missions for that workout. But I want a little more. I’m not sure when I’m going to pull this off - should it be on the day I do a 30-minute HIIT workout? after 20 minutes of MMA training? give up one of my coveted days off?

It might kill me, but I’d like to do it once. And if I never feel like I can manage it? Well, that will be a shame, but I won't let it ruin my jam.

Life Side Quest

Address the DVD mess. I’ve been waaaaayyy too lazy to keep up with the semi-broken DVD storage solution I have (all DVDs stored in paper sleeves in an apothecary drawer chest in alphabetical order). I have tons of DVDs that need sleeving - and things need to be gone through to ensure everything is in order. Ideally, I need to come up with a new system that will actually allow me to figure out what all I have - but I’m not holding my breath for that one until I make the jump to all-digital storage. For now, I’d be happy with all my DVDs being safe and orderly.

Fitness Side Quest

The handstand craze from a couple of months ago sounds like fun. I think I’d like to work on that. No big pressure to perform here, I’d just like to give it a go during this challenge cycle.

Goal 1: Fitness

Week 1 Wrapup: I did pretty well for the week, considering the sheer amount of drama I dealt with. I did end up skipping 1 workout - 10 Minute Isometric Workout 30 Minute Yoga Cardio Workout -- mainly because I couldn't fathom doing 40 minutes right after waking up on Sunday. Hopefully this next week won't disrupt my workout schedule too much - my floors need to be replaced; hopefully I can still have room to work out. I'm giving myself an A-, because I skipped a workout - due to shit I couldn't control.

Week 2 Wrapup: I did pretty well for the week, and am proud of myself for not just bullishly pushing through a potential injury and making it worse. Generally I'd just suck it up and do it anyways, but I listened to my body this time when it said stop it with the arms for a few days. I'm going A- here, because although I skipped a HasFit day (20 Minute Cardio Shred 6 Minute Killer Abs Workout), I was still active that day.

Week 3 Wrapup: I did not horrible for the week, considering how crazy my schedule was. I'm giving myself a for the week - I got a great walk in on Monday, and did my HasFit routine twice during the week. Not ideal, but not doing nothing either.

Week 4 WrapupC. I got three workouts in. Should have done better, but dammit, sometimes fantasies are hard to let go.

Week 5 WrapupA. I did all my workouts and didn't totally slack off on my days off.

Week 6 WrapupD. I, by necessity of logistics, got zero workouts in. I'm giving myself a little credit here, because hoisting boxes & packing is fairly muscle-intensive. At least I wasn't sitting on my ass.

Goal 2: Metrics and Moar Metrics

Week 1 Wrapup: I'm giving myself a B for the times I was over on calories & fat - and the carb overage + protein underage. I need to button up if I don't want to be chubbs.

Week 2 Wrapup: I'm giving myself an A for the week - metrics were great all week.

Week 3 Wrapup: I'm giving myself an A for the week - metrics were great all week, despite some slightly calorie heavy days.

Week 4 Wrapup: I'm giving myself an A for the week - metrics were great all week - go, W30!

Week 5 Wrapup: I'm giving myself an A for the week - metrics were great all week - go, W30!

Week 6 Wrapup: I'm giving myself an A for the week - metrics were a little dipping a day or two, but nothing major. Whoo!

Goal 3: Moving Rapidly Through Space

Week 1 Wrapup: Nothing done here. N/A

Week Wrapup: A. I actually did it. Goal accomplished.

Week 3 Wrapup: A. Goal still accomplished.

Week 4 Wrapup: A. Goal still accomplished.

Week 5 Wrapup: A. Goal still accomplished.

Week 6 Wrapup: A. Goal still accomplished.

LSQ: Address the DVD Mess

Week 1 Wrapup: Nothing done here. N/A

Week 2 Wrapup: Nothing done here. N/A

Week 3 Wrapup: Nothing done here. N/A

Week 4 Wrapup: I accomplished a bit here. A

Week 5 Wrapup: I accomplished a bunch here. A

Week 6 Wrapup: I'm still going for here.

FSQ: Handstands

Week 1 Wrapup: Squishy floors + forgetfulness got in my way this week. N/A

Week 2 Wrapup: I had other shit to contend with and it wasn't a priority. N/A

Week 3 Wrapup: Bam. Complete. A

Week 4 Wrapup: Even more complete with handstand shoulder shrugs & the tiniest of all baby handstand pushups. A

Week 5 Wrapup: Complete. A

Week 6 Wrapup: Complete. A

I'm digging it - looks totally achievable! I'm sure the hasfit stuff will be super crazy tough, so it's good that you're going a little easier on yourself elsewhere :)

I have to confess, I've been eyeing that whole handstand thing myself. It didn't make the cut as far as goals go, but I may give it a try anyways. It seems like it would be fun. Plus, you know, it's always good to expand your party-trick repertoire!

I should make one of those grading placeholder thingies. I'm always going about it the most awkward way. Idea stolen.

Yeah ... I *know* HasFit is going to be crazy - in my head. But the part that's sending up warning bells and yelling at me to getoffyourassalreadyandJUSTDOIT wants to go for a moving rapidly through space workout ... in today's dark and cold. I'm thinking the amount of phleghm still in my lungs would take exception to that plan. Maybe some pullup practice would be good. And the hubbs keeps telling me to 'just do some abs'.

...

Really, Pandora? As I'm typing this, Pandora is no help (or is it secretly genius?) - playing Wish by NIN - a song that always gets me all fired up and ready to kick things.

...

Oooh yes. Totally forgot to run on here and tell you guys - I got my 2 best friends to download the Zombies, Run! 5k trainer last week. And one of them might be joining us on NF if I can convince her to jump off the ledge. :D Look at me, being a *good* influence! Now if only I can get my brother back on here ... *preps the cattle prod*

Today's the first day of challenge - and I'm excited but totally kind of worried that I might completely tank tonight's workout. Taking 2 weeks off from fitness hasn't set terribly well with my body -- walking around the museum yesterday had me exhausted and my hip burning.

And the carbs ... all the carbs .... I have *got* to cut that out. Time to button back up and get going in the right direction!

And I will totally admit that I ate almost nothing but carbs yesterday - I was cooking perogies and cabbage rolls, and didn't really have a proper meal all day, so I ate rice and potato filling :( Okay, let us officially hop off that train! Back to real life, holidays are over!

That sounds fantastic. I ate coffee with cream and sugar in the morning, and then tacos & tortillas for dinner. Went over on protein - and 100 grams over on carbs.

Hey, NFers. I'm not sure the best place to share this article, but I know quite a few of my NF pals are looking to clean up their eating this challenge.

My absolute favorite food blog is doing a kind of clean up your diet boot camp thing, with quick guides and tips weekly. Check it out

And I forget which friend's thread it was but somebody mentioned the site Do Yoga With Me - it's all free and all things that can be done out of the comfort of your own home. Looks great for anyone looking to get into yoga but don't have the cash/motivation to go out into the world and do it. I'll be bookmarking the site for use after my current regimen.

You are talking about me in your thread! You will be happy to know that I posted just this morning on another newbie's thread that wanted some accountability buddies, so  :playful:.

But I'm open to making new connections and getting feed back on my posts and progress!

Week 1 Day 1

Goal 1: Fitness

Completed Day 1 of HasFit’s Hero 90 program: 30 Minute Blazing Weight Loss Workout - and I thought I was going to die a little. That’s what I get for taking 3 weeks to do little but walk, and 10 weeks in between the Warrior90 program and this one. What do they say? Pain is just crappiness leaving the body? Something like that?

I’m counting it as a success that I didn’t throw up. And I want to come back today.

Goal 2: Metrics and Moar Metrics

Breakfast: Green smoothie

Lunch: Salad of romaine lettuce/grilled chicken/mango/red pepper/cherry tomato/balsamic vinegar/grapeseed oil

Dinner: Grass fed beef patty with aged gouda and baked sweet potato fries

Calories: 1,547

Carbs: 99

Fat: 90

Protein: 1,010

Sugars: 41

Water: 60 oz +

Sleep: 9 hours & 32 minutes - restless 13 times

Steps: 2,103

Fitness Minutes: 30 very active minutes

Calories In vs. Calories Out: 1547 In vs 1625 out

Carbs were 1 gram under; fat was ok but on the higher end; protein was crazy; and calories were a bit higher than I like. Not a bad day, but not stellar.

And it looks like I’ve ‘accidentally’ signed up to do another Whole30 challenge - as I was supporting BlamedCat in his time of doubt, I may have told him and Fonzico that I would join them in a Whole30 Challenge ‘for funsies’ starting next week. What have I gotten myself into?!

No, really, I’m excited to embark on this challenge (because I’m a food masochist, apparently) and am happy to get the chance to support those who have supported me. If you all were following me during my last Whole30 Challenge - I’ll be doing things pretty much the same way on my blog. I’ll be posting daily pics of everything I eat, keeping a log, and posting recipes where possible. I’ll also do a big recap and will probably continue posting resources and other updates as I find them. Shameless plug: follow my blog or me on twitter for Whole30 updates!

Goal 3: Moving Rapidly Through Space

No work here, but no surprise. My workout was intense.

LSQ: Address the DVD Mess

Actually totally forgot this was a goal — it will be good to have a daily reminder :)

FSQ: Handstands

Again with the forgetting & daily reminding.

@Kweb: of *course* I'm talking about you on my thread. I'm ridiculously excited you're here! Way to go on engagement with other humans. It's not so bad, when there's 2 computer screens + space between you  :)

Over a thousand grams of protein... impressive! :P

Feeling any DOMS today? I know I am!

I've been immersing myself in Whole30 resources all morning.. I found I was pretty disappointed after re-reading Well-fed (her tastes just really do not match up with mine) but am feeling better after a Nomnompaleo binge. We can do this!

Yes! My chicken wing area is hurting (the connection between my arm and body) and my thighs are tired. Calfs are tight, too. DOMS all over the damn place.

Well Fed is one of the most disappointing things I've experienced lately food-wise. She has some fantastic advice - especially for newbies - but her recipes suck. I've never made anything from her site that wasn't bland to the point of not wanting to eat it -- and I've even kicked things up with my own level of spice before when making one of her dishes.

Nom Nom Paleo is the shit. I've made tons of her recipes and she has never steered me wrong. I should probably get on the whole preparation thing ... and at least buy some red jalapenos this weekend so I can bolster my Whole30-approved sriracha supply. And I need to find more coconut aminos. I have some Red Boat brand fish sauce left - but should probably grab some more while I'm at it.

Always a good workout when you feel like you are going to die!  Keep it up!

Yes! I need to find some approved fish sauce and sausage, coconut aminos, stock up on coconut milk and oil, make some homemade mayo (I can give pretty much anything up as long as I can slather that stuff on it!), get some nuts, and come to terms with the fact that I probably won't get to eat bacon for a month.

Wait. Did you have a recipe for homemade bacon? Or am I just dreaming that up? Not that I have a smoker... but I'm sure I could rig something up! If not, my Italian paleo recipe book has a pork belly with balsamic reduction that may tide me over somewhat.
