Jill Beat Building on Boring

Jill Beat

Recommended Posts

This is my third NF challenge.  The first one went great for the first 1-4 weeks, then I had a really hard time keeping up with it.  The last challenge I did pretty well with until the last week.  So this time I'm going to make all 6-weeks awesome.

My main objective remains the same - to reduce my body fat percentage.  I don't really care what the scale says, I care more about how I look and feel. My main quest for this mission is basically the same:

YOUR MAIN QUEST - (Continue to) Be more boring.

For myself it's about simplifying, and creating more routine, and stressing less.  I was really inspired by this article of Steve's here:http://www.nerdfitne...are-you-boring/   Saint/Staci/Joe - those are all some pretty sexy examples of boring ;)

My goals are very similar to my last challenge, but I've built on them a bit.  I've added the stretching goal into my goal of a bedtime routine, and added an exercise goal in it's place.

3 GOALS

1.  Sleep/night time routine - create a consistent bed time routine (brush teeth & floss, wash face, body lotion, stretching/meditation, wear bunion splints & retainer to bed)

               - get up at the same time every day (no snooze button)

               - set a light on a timer for 15 minutes before alarm goes off

The reason for this goal, is because I really think that lack of sleep and too much stress is hindering my progress. I really enjoyed creating this bedtime routine in the previous challenge and am excited to be continuing with it.  I saw huge changes in my flexibility from just a little bit of stretching/yoga each night.  It was very encouraging to see those kinds of results!

2. 2 At-home workouts a week - ideally 1 TRX suspension training workout (I just bought one before the holidays and it should be here any day! I took a training course in this last summer and really haven't utilized that knowledge yet!)  and 1 Bellyfit or Zumba workout a week.  I adjusted my fitness class teaching schedule for this year to give myself more time for myself, I'm still teaching 4 classes a week, except now I teach only 2 days a week (2 back to back classes - 1 strength training class, 1 cardio class).

3. Continue to eat Paleo - I do pretty well with this most of the time now.  I cook 1 day a week and eat what I make all week.  Breakfasts are usually eggs, breakfast sausage, and veggies (mushrooms, spinach, tomatoes), lunches are typically soup & raw veggies, maybe a treat of some sort (fruit, paleo baked good, etc), dinner is typically something like a meat and a couple veggies, a slow cooker creation, spaghetti squash & meatballs, stir fry, etc.  My challenges with eating paleo tend to be snacks and sweets.  I want to try to combat this by keeping "good" sweets on hand (in the freezer) for when I "need" them.  And just by digging in my heels a little bit in social situations where temptations lie (after I've done all I can to remove will-power from the equation).

SIDE QUESTS

Life Side Quest: Last challenge I said I wanted to work on my fitness blog more.  I didn't do anything about it.  This whole year I've dedicated myself to a hard hat challenge per month.  I only have the first couple months figured out and then will go from there.

January: Work on fitness blog every day.  This can be actually writing and publishing articles, reading & research, work outs, promoting content, etc.  Anything to do with the blog and it's growth & success.  if you wanna check it out visit www.fitnesswithjill.com

February: Read daily

March: Craft daily

DECLARE YOUR MOTIVATION - My motivation is my future goals to help others with fitness & health.  I feel like I need to get it figured out for myself to better help others.  I feel like I'm getting there, I just need to keep it up!

I'm not sure if I'm going to use this tracking again this challenge, but we'll see.

Welcome back! I also have trouble with the sweets... I think I am just going to give up sugar except for fruits and sugar in my coffee. I am hoping to kick the sugar addiction!

You said lunches are usually paleo soups.  Got any recipes to share? I've wanted to make more soup lunches with my crockpot.

Let us know how the TRX stuff is.  my homegym consists of a 10 pound sledgehammer, 20 pound sledgehammer, a homemade 25 pound kettelbell, 45 pound kettelbell, and some 13 pound sandjugs.  This challenge I hope to make some 80 pound sandbags.

This year I'll be blogging my giant cooking day creations on my craft/cooking/DIY blog, and I'll be sharing the link in my thread here so that I stay accountable and so that people can try out the recipes if they want!  I'm eating a soup right now that I made this week - it's supposed to be a cream of potato imitation with cauliflower & leeks.  It's pretty good, but you definitely know it's not potato!  The recipe will be on my blog tomorrow! (I'll share the link here when it's up!)

A really good slow cooker soup is this sweet  potato one from Paleomg: http://paleomg.com/sweet-potato-basil-soup/

I hope to put up some of my workouts on my fitness blog - and TRX will definitely be included!  I'll make sure to share all that here too!

I know potato is very criticized in paleo and others, but I don't believe it's total negative.

It's a high GLI food, and should not be eaten in quantity, but, I think potato in moderate amount to not spike the blood sugar is OK in my book.

Fresh potato has good potassium and vitamines - so boiled potato / homemade home fries (in bacon grease!) in small amount is a good recovery food for me.

For example, boiled white potato has higher GLI than sweet potato but not by much. (82/70)

If a recipe calls small quantity of potatoes, I occasionally use it as long as it's white/yellow potato.

(I used one large white potato for 4 servings of dish with fish/chorizo/leek/tomato, so it's around 2-3oz of potato per serving.)

Processed veg oil used for fries and chips is far more damaging than potato.

Dead potato, soaked in processed oil (aka potato chips) should be avoided at all cost.

But, Trader Joe's sells olive oil fried potato chips. I cannot tell you how much will power I need to pass it up.

Key words "in moderation" would require too much will power for me.  lol  Although I did think about added a really small potato to that soup to give it a more creamy texture, but I think I'm going to try more cauliflower first and see how that goes.

For those of you interested in what I've been eating this week, hop over to my blog - photos and recipes of everything!!

Yes! Please do. :)

I just realized that my cookbook is in another box...waiting to come to the RV....I'm due for a batch - a crock pot full makes four HUGE paleo friendly, fat flush friendly, freezer friendly servings!

Save all your bits and pieces of veggies....this is a no holds barred, everything goes, recipe....and all veggies are game!

Will post it as soon as I get my books here!

There is actually a lot of research and data to support the assertion, a small research paper if you will:

Tubers (what we know of as potatoes) and Sweet Potatoes are an interesting case in the paleo thing, supposedly tubers (a type of nightshade) were cultivated around 8000 years ago, and therefore, after the dawn of agriculture, and therefore not neolithic, i.e. cavemen didn't eat them. however it should be noted that if they felt a food was worth cultivating, it was probably consumed, regularly, before then, meaning that there is the distinct possibility that cavemen ate white potatoes, second problem is that, as previously noted, they are a nightshade and contain some anti-nutrients, they are however confined primarily to the skin, so peeling them is key, the only real problem with potatoes? high carbohydrate concentration (in a raw side by side numbers comparison, white potatoes beat sweet potatoes in some categories, while sweet wins in others, mostly a wash to be honest) which can be a problem for some people, and the real kicker is in how we cook them (you mean french fries are radically different from baked potatoes!! LOL :surprise: ) so really white potatoes are not as villainous as we have been led to believe :-p

(after all what good is a research paper if I don't cite any sources? and don't get me started on proper citing procedures, I don't do that anymore lol)

Thanks everyone!!

I'm loving getting to know everyone better on the forum this challenge.  :)

So even though I haven't officially started yet, I'm sort of testing out my goals thus far.  Last night I was REALLY craving something sweet and had nothing good to eat for this in the house (and it was minus a billion outside, so....that wasn't happening).  I did have a can of blueberry pie filling in my pantry, left over from something.  Yup. Totally dug into it.  I had one small bowl, which tasted good, then I went back for another that was not satisfying and just full of guilt.  After I finished that one (yup, still ate it) I got up and threw the whole can in the garbage (i generally recycle, but there was no way I was going to scoop out what was left and rinse the can....it had to be destroyed NOW!!).  I wish it hadn't happened at all, but knowing I can't change it, I can only do things to move forward.  So I'm going to stock up on some fruit and maybe make some paleo muffins to keep in the freezer tomorrow.

Your goals look awesome! Good luck this challenge!

And, good outlook for moving forward! We all sometimes go a little too far in indulging. As long as you get back in the game, that's what matters! :)

Easiest snack to have around if I'm jonesing and I also want something to crunch a little bit is cashews and raisins.  Healthy fat according to the whole30, and I've never overeaten them because I get tired of them after a scoop.  If you are prone to snacking and eating a whole bag/container, then when you buy them and come home- IMMEDIATELY separate them into little ziploc bags.  That's what I did for my trail mix and it worked out great. grab a bag and you're all set.

Hi Jill! :)

I finally made it over here. lol

(First) bookmarked the blog, that's awesome! (actually both)

(Second) When I put dancing on my intro I was talking about the fact that I do a freestyle mix of zumba/ bellydancing! (Which I LOVE! :D )
I prefer freestyle as I like to use my own music.

(Third) The meatballs you made with chia seeds, did you like those? I am immensely curious as I am a big fan of chia seeds and hadn't thought of using them in meatballs!

(Fourth) I am a crafter! I have an Etsy store that I sell what I make on. Though it hasn't been too active since my surgery. Plan to get it up and running again but I didn't want to add that to my challenge this time as I figured I had enough on my plate, lol!  :nevreness:

Well, I am sub'd and looking forward to following along! I think you are going to do fantastic on this challenge!

My snack food of choice is apples, Fuji or granny smith for me (red delicious are a little to soft for me I dunno) but I like them so much I could seriously eat just a whole bag in one sitting, so I have to watch out lol

The meatballs with chia seeds are awesome.  You don't really notice them, but they are a good way to replace bread crumbs in the meat balls.

What kinda stuff do you sell in your Etsy store?  I've thought about opening an Etsy shop, but I love doing so many things that I can't really pick one thing to sell.  Plus, I don't really have the time to put into it as a business.  I really want to concentrate my "spare time" on teaching fitness classes and working on that as a business.  Crafting is just one of my nerdy hobbies :)  My sister is currently selling her crocheted stuff on StoreEnvy and she did a big craft sale in early December that I went to help her with.  It was so much fun, so I live vicariously through her with that!

I love fruit.  Almost too much.  Which is why I try not to keep too much of it around.  I had been cutting down to eating half an apple at once, which was good, but also requires self control. :(  Because my eating habits are pretty good to begin with, and I'm trying to lower my body fat (probably between 20-25% currently) things like sugar in fruit are some of the things i need to watch out for, but again, sugar in fruit is still better than a can of pie filling full of high fructose corn syrup and other terrible goopy stuff!

Lemmie know what you sell on etsy.  My g/f is doing easy-level zumba and she's getting the hang of it.  It keeps her motivated since she's in a group.  I'm the opposite- I just want people to back off while I go beast mode.

That's awesome that your g/f is liking Zumba.  I teach classes too and love the group atmosphere.  For me it keeps me motivated and I love people...sometimes.  Definitely different things work for different people, and I think that's exactly it - finding what works for you! :)

I have an Etsy store as well, mostly with my prints on it, sell one ever so often, hoping to get some new stuff up there finally this year.

You are now my new favourite person.  Lush, and Etsy....    :love_heart:
