Main quest: Be like Rocky - It’s about finding out how hard I can get hit and keep moving forward; how much I can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!

Motivation: “Going in one more round when you don't think you can - that's what makes all the difference in your lifeâ€.

Over the next year, I'll be doing the following on my quest:

  • Testing up in Muay Thai - DONE LAST CHALLENGE. Most spend close to a year at my current level, so no testing up again for a while. Time to settle in and build skills.
  • Fighting in fight day at the fight camp – aiming for spring smoker
  • Doing a competition that involves lifting weight (in lieu of CMC) – registered
  • GoRuck Heavy – need another light and another challenge (tbd) under my belt.

Recently, the owner of my MMA gym talked a out what makes a good fighter. I adopted these principles for organizing my challenges.

  • CANI
  • Mental Toughness
  • Emotional Control
  • The Spirit of a Warrior

1. CANI = constant and never-ending improvement, stemming from the Kaizen philosophy of improvement.

I train 7x week: 3 days Muay Thai, 4 days lifting.

To improve, I need to work on the following in Muay Thai:

I've developed an elbow tendonitis problem most likely related to striking. It is most likely due to hyper extension from shadowboxing and poor partner pad holding. It could also be due to heavy bag work. In order to address this, I'm going to work on less vigorous shadow boxing, being more particular with my partners about pad holding, and working on retracting my punches more forcefully.

In the tradition of Rocky, though, I will continue working my power in punching (see retraction above). Rocky could take a beating and then was famous for his power in punching. I want that.

I have no current issues with lifting. I have a good program and I always do what coach says. Always. I'm lifting well right now.

2. Mental Toughness = I've been really good lately with mentally powering through some really tough training and I didn't quit during sparring with the pro coaches during my recent testing.

I really struggle with seeing my setbacks as failure and giving up. I fully and completely see the issue with my elbow as my failure and adjusting training to deal with it as quitting. I also struggle with performance anxiety in events. I'm working on it. I did really well with the Muay Thai testing event. I continue to work on this.

I start this work by remembering I always listen to coach and by making an appointment to work with my Muay Thai coach.

3. Emotional Control = fighters can’t get angry because that leads to sloppy fighting. They can’t afford to be out of control. Being out of control, in any sport, is dangerous. For me, this isn’t a big issue in sports BUT…. Find emotional control around diet in order to lose weight.

I need to be more careful about protein. I get enough but not the amount coach wants me to get. I gave in to the lure of Greek yogurt for a couple of weeks and got very sick. I need to eat meat, whey, and eggs.

I need to drop some weight but not muscle. That means keeping protein high and eating less fat. So no more butter w eggs and limit red meat. I keep very low carb already.

I'm fasting 1x week w only 100g in whey protein in a 24 hour period. I am thinking about more fasting. I will explore this possibility with coach.

4. The spirit of a warrior = Warriors value life. They lead and inspire. They respect death and fight the big fight. They act out of love and compassion and do not act from ego. They act with courage.

Every day I will continue to find happiness, to challenge myself to be better, to be compassionate, and to serve others.

First up, 6 promises (1 per challenge week) because I said I would.

I'll update the pretty part of the post tomorrow and provide pics of my foot injury.

EDIT: I HATE TRYING TO EMBED THE VIDEOS some work some do not. why why why. and yes, I tried media tags.

I AM going the distance

'Cause all I wanna do is go the distance. Nobody's ever gone the distance with Creed, and if I can go that distance, you see, and that bell rings and I'm still standin', I'm gonna know for the first time in my life, see, that I weren't just another bum from the neighborhood.

Yesterday. No that is not my tibia. It is a golf ball sized hematoma from kicks on the heavy bag.

Today. Pic doesn't do the bruise justice.

I can rehab damn well. I know a thing or two. And I'm hearty.

And yes I lifted today.

Pardon typos, I'm eating jerky.

If you're already very low carb, and fasting, how do plan to do lower fat?

7 days a week workouts, with all of the things you do...have you considered a refeed instead of just cutting food? It might be worthwhile to explore other dietary options instead of just cutting nutrients. Your body does need food every once in a while! :)

I eat plenty. You don't need as many carbs as you want. A refeed will make me fat so no. Fat is plentiful in what I eat. I had about 2oz of meat w fat in it and 3 eggs for breakfast. That's sufficient fat. Eliminating 1-2 TBSP cuts about 200 calories out of my day. That's pretty damned easy.

I only fast 1x week right now. It's certainly not hurting. Not sure it's helping me drop weight but it hasn't hurt performance. I lift the day I fast and those days have been going really well.

Trained yesterday:

Squats for high volume at 70%

Deads for high volume at 70% touch and go

DB work on presses and shrugs.  Had to watch presses and keep weight light.  Luckily all DB work was written for 75 total reps with 30 sec rest between sets to ensure weight stayed light.

Got stuff out of the freezer for breakfast but spousal unit didn't label the container.  So, surprise, red meat to have with eggs. *sigh* Already not on a good path.  I made everything with no added butter.

AND he bought roast beef yesterday at the market and now he's not going to be around for most meals this week.  *sigh*

As usual I love your goals! I think you're tougher than you give yourself credit for, but I totally get the feeling like you've failed thing. There are some things that are easier to see from an outsider's perspective than from the person going through it's perspective.

And you know me, I dig the fasting thing. I'm curious to see how the fat reduction thing works for you and whether it helps or hinders performance in any way.

Also, lifting...YAY!!!!! That totally beats the stationary bike's ass!!

As far as the red meat, if you skipped the butter, doesn't that get you close to your goal of 1-2 TBSP's less of fat for the day?

Thanks.  Yeah... I have a really high tolerance for just about everything - change, uncertainty, pain, aches, life's assorted miseries, public transportation, etc.  but I have a very high INtolerance for me not performing.

There's a long story here but I'm taking a class for work and saw 2 other people I know and respect on the list.  Before class even started, I reached out to them and said "we're a team!  And we're going to win!  There is a prize, right?".  LOL.

Lifting always beats stationary bike!  But I'll prob have at least one more day of bike as I can only ease back into muay thai.

I didn't eat that much red meat luckily.  Spousal unit insists on believing bacon is a breakfast meat staple.  I keep showing him the protein content versus regular meat.  I might finally win.  I'd rather eat turkey or buffalo if I'm cutting fat.  Yeah, cutting the butter is HUGE esp b/c I only have about 1-2 TBSP a day and don't eat added fats otherwise - no coconut oil or olive oil unless it's required in a recipe (which is rare).  Usually I don't even put oil on veggies.  No butter either.  I prefer them plain.

A coach at the MMA gym shared this with the gym members today.  I do not have a procrastination problem (first week of class work is done and class started today - I started early... lol).  But a lot of you do and struggle and don't realize the importance of details and frankly, just getting stuff done.

This is good for a lot of you - get out of the dark playground

Thanks for posting the 2 PART article on procrastination that I just spent the last 15 minutes reading. I was soooo in the dark playground there. SQUIRREL!!!

Seriously though, this was me my first semester of college:

In college, the sudden unbridled personal freedom was a disaster for me—I did nothing, ever, for any reason.

Yeah as a former college prof, I can tell you time management and procrastination were the big grade killers.  Also, the belief "but I was an A student in high school".  Um yeah....

You know how many students would say "I just don't have time to study that much".  Me:  yes you do I'll find it for you and guarantee you 7-8 hours of sleep a night, meals, fun time, work time, and class time.  Here's the deal:  you have to be a grown up and just suck it up and do it.  Make a choice.

The ones who did exceled.  The ones who did not usually struggled or failed.

It's a really good article.

and the thing is, I'm really good about this stuff.

He doesn't address a lot of it but instant gratification monkey is really a lot of immaturity.  While I'm all in favor of being immature now and then, we are failing our society to keep fostering immaturity.  Just suck it up and get it done then you can relax and play.

Oh oh and the bit about it's all choices....?  yes yes yes it is.

Also, it's about goals and details... and well... I could make a living doing this stuff... :playful:

Damn shit got real.

I ain't got time for this

I got training to do

And I'm just putting this out there: went to dance supply store. Told clerk I needed leg warmers for my arms, the warmest they have, for lifting bc I forgot my lifting sleeves.

Without missing a beat, she says "I recommend the 12" in our thick cotton"

And that's how winning is done! Love that girl.
