I AM going the distance

'Cause all I wanna do is go the distance. Nobody's ever gone the distance with Creed, and if I can go that distance, you see, and that bell rings and I'm still standin', I'm gonna know for the first time in my life, see, that I weren't just another bum from the neighborhood.

Yesterday's training

Heavy squats for volume - yup you read that right

Heavy DL for volume (not touch and go) - yup yup

Then, as indicated in a post above, I walked home 2.0 mi in the polar vortex.  Seriously disappointed.  I expected so much more.

But, when I got home - HUGE hives from the cold allergy. Nice.

What's weird is I was walking to the gym with one of our docs and we were talking about the polar vortex, walking in the cold, etc. and I mentioned my allergy.  Well, he got all excited and started asking about anaphylaxis and if I ever got it and what prevention measures I take, etc etc.  Well, sure enough, by the time I got home - massive reaction.  *sigh*  Ate me some dinners and had a glass of wine and tried to not be itchy.  Oh and I was wearing thermal underwear AND insulated running tights AND lifting socks.

I also told the doc I wondered about my contact lenses freezing - could that happen?  and he said "oh yeah!  Happens and your face can freeze too.  It happened to me!".  LOL.  This is what I do all day - talk about people's faces freezing and allergies to cold.  Good thing I'm not a hypochondriac.

On the foot front, it's still very bruised and hurts on top and the bruise is still really dark (which means it's very slow healing).  Very deep, very bad.  Meh.  Swells after walking for a while but not bad.  Did not need ice last night.  Perhaps a benefit of the polar vortex.

On the elbow front, it is no longer excrutiating.  SQUEEE!  And by excrutiating I mean drop stuff when you pick stuff up b/c of pain or can't get dressed b/c of pain... mind numbing, tear inducing pain.  Good progress.  I heated a bit yesterday evening and took advil but I think I'm going to move away from the heat and advil today and see how it goes.  I've found these tiger balm patches (which eliminate potential confusion with other ointments!) and I'm using that at work (mmmm.... smells so good!).  AND the best news is that I'm finally able to do the flexbar rehab!!!  OMG!  I haven't been able to do it b/c it was so so so unbearably painful.  And just to put it in context, I had a broken ankle and torn tendon for 9 mos so I have a really high pain tolerance.  Oh and I could lift and serve from my smaller pan this a.m.!!!  And I carried a coffee cup with no pain!  Slowly slowly....

Training for lifting tonight.  I might maybe possibly try muay thai tomorrow.  Jabbing hurts but I might be able to do other things.  Who needs a jab when you can left hook, right leg kick!

Heavy Squats and DL for volume in the same session? And you can still stand up straight today? Very impressive!

Progress is progress. First was getting dressed, today you can handle breakfast. As long as it keeps moving forward, you'll be alright!

I'm glad that your elbow isn't keeping you from deadlifts even if it's been making it hard to hold a cup of coffee. (I'm guessing straps?)

I'm so glad deads don't hurt!  I did deads on Sunday too (heavy touch and gos) and no problem.

No, no straps.  Coach said to never use them on deads, so I don't.  He tells me when I can use them.  LOL.

It's really weird what hurts it.  Any type of lift with a twist or flip - like a clean.  UGH!  I had trouble cleaning just the bar to rack it for squats.  Anything that involves grip and pull kills - believe it or not, pulling on a mitten kills.  It's something with the grip and how the grip is working with the tendons.

It's funny,  a lot of things don't hurt at all.  Triceps exercises, pushups, etc.

Progress is progress.  The pain is soooooo much better.

Yeah I often squat and DL together.  And yeah, rarely sore.  very very rarely sore.  I think all the walking helps.  Plus I'm hearty.

Definitely! Doing the lifts and sitting in a chair for the next 8 hours is not nearly as good of an idea as the walking :P

For some reason I see that last sentence and I read it in a pirate voice. Like, "Argh, I be hearty, me hearty!"

Huh, interesting. I would have thought that gripping the bar for deadlifts would be a problem if holding a cup hurts, which is why I thought you might be using straps to take the pressure off, but it's awesome that it doesn't interfere at all.

The bar sits in the hand differently.

Elbow all angry again. Because it's stupid and there is a polar vortex.

Yesterday's training

moderate benches for volume

heavish RG benches for moderate volume

assistance work

Most went really well except for one assistance exercise which inflamed the elbow.  I was surprised b/c I didn't think it would.  So I iced when I got home and took some more advil.  booooo.

emailed some with coach.

I'm going to try Muay Thai today keeping it light. Fingers crossed. <-which is hard in boxing gloves and not a good idea, actually.... LOL.

Diet super good yesterday.  I was considering adding some eggs to dinner last night but did not so my fat content stayed fairly low during the day.  Yea!

Breakfast - chicken and broccoli and cauliflower.  So awesome when spousal unit is out of town.

Boo indeed. If you were surprised, I'm guessing you weren't doing hammer curls. Something that involved gripping and rotating your hand while you did the exercise?

Boo about the elbow.

I don't know that I was totally active on the boards last March...  Cool that you attended one of his seminars.  How was it?

It was really good if you are a SS person.  It's his way or you are stupid.  Not kidding.

It's mentally and physically exhausting.

You sit in long, scientific lectures (in a FREEZING CF box - ugh) and then you do that lift repeatedly.  While lifting, you are broken into groups with somewhat similar lifts - say a group of 5-6 people.  Then after you lift over and over and take turns coaching each other, the whole class stops and everybody does a 5x heavy lift for Rip in front of the whole class.  Squat, Press, Dead, Bench, and Clean.  2 days.

I was so exhausted.  I met some amazing people. There were a few ding dongs too but a lot of great people.

Rip is tough.

Sounds like you need to tell spousal unit to start making his own meals :)

Yes, breakfast is way better without spousal unit.  He likes eggs and bacon for breakfast every day.  If I can convince him to do something else, it's eggs and Canadian bacon.... LOL.  I hate ham and canadian bacon is essentially ham.  Bleh.

That pic is from March.  I don't know what you people are looking at.  I do not see the arm thing.  I just went and looked.  I do not see what you are talking about.

Rip's face is priceless.  That's a lift he liked.... LOL.

I think my copy of Starting Strength got lost in the move. Your post reminded me of that. Should get a copy.

I hear good things about Phenocane. Not an NSAID so doesn't mess with your uptakes and whatnot. Spendy though. Especially if you're popping a lot of it.

What does spousal unit like to eat that you don't?

Phenocane, huh? Never heard of it but I know peeps. I'm going look it up in the drug book when I get to work.

Spousal unit is a ridgid man of habit. Breakfast is bacon and eggs w butter and some veg. I'll eat anything. He will too but by default, that's what he eats every day. Sigh....
