cline
Yeah, I can see it. Definition in your arms! Boom! no, that's just the lighting. Really. There is nothing to see there except my silly face and the "action" in my pony tail - clearly just finished the lift. I am glad that used to be a fairly tough 5x for me and it's warm up now. Bacon and eggs and veggies sounds like a good meal any time of day. It is but not every day. And It's a lot of fat. I AM going the distance 'Cause all I wanna do is go the distance. cline
Happy Fasting Friday! Happy iced over sidewalks and streets all the way to work! SQUEEEEEE I trained Muay Thai last night! SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE I talked with coach and we agreed to hold off and not do any jabs. It was fine b/c we were doing some good footwork stuff and then boxing and then some light sparring (I chose to stay with the really really light group so I didn't over do the arm). Who needs jabs when you can hook? Bwwaaa haaa so instead of 1, 1, 2 (jab, jab, cross), I'd throw cross, cross, hook. Good. Hooks and uppercuts don't hurt at all (fyi, you don't cross with the left). Holding the mitts hurt a bit but not terrible. Oh yeah and we did this fun kick conditioning drill. All the kicks!!!! leg kicks, body kicks HEAD KICKS! BAM! I hit every one! oooooo head kicks.... so cool. Iced elbow and took advil as preventative treatment. Tiger balm patch over night. And woke up this a.m. - almost no pain!!! OMG!!! elbow happy dance! I still baby the elbow all day - very very careful about what I pick up, etc. but this is good. I was terrified about trying the Muay Thai. Really good. Muay Thai coach tried to tell me I was overtraining. I asked lifting coach and he said no way. He also said I do need to address these injuries but I am not over training. Yea. Fasting friday, massage, and going to pro boxing fights tonight (and I can walk there!!). I AM going the distance 'Cause all I wanna do is go the distance. weirdquark
Yay for your elbow being able to take Muay Thai as long as you don't jab people! Your recovery is crazy good; whenever I try working out more than five days I can't keep it up for more than six weeks. Though I suppose I could train every day until I can't and then take a day off. cline
My recovery is very good. I am pretty much never sore or tired. It's really rare. I really eat well, I drink carefully, and I get plenty of sleep but not too much. I'm a super happy person. I think this all helps. I'm honestly, never sore. It's so rare.As for my elbow... It's still improving slowly. Muay Thai was a bit tougher on it today but I iced when i got home and will soon tiger balm it. Straightening it is the painful part sometimes. I continue to be careful and baby it when I'm not training. I'm also careful that my training doesn't cause any pain in it.The foot... Well... It doesn't seem to be swelling but the bruising is so bad. Much of it is still black or purple. Here's a pic. I put my foot on the kitchen counter so it's a weird pictureYeah all the way down behind the lateral side of the tib and all across the anterior part of the ankle and top of foot. cline
Today's training: Muay Thai!!! Two of our pro fighters were in our class today too. Coolness. It's cool that they do the same class work we do. Today we were working the left and right body shots with a follow up upper cut on the same side. We'd open with a punch combo or a slip to load the correct side, unleash a body shot, reset and hit the same side uppercut and the finish with leg kick and body kick or two switch kicks. It was a lot of fun and great combos. Really good work. Good partner. Finished w forward sprints to 10 good body shots, backward sprint, 5 full push-ups on gloves. Etc AMRAP for 2 mins. Nice. Boxing was fun last night. Last two fights were very good. And just because it's AWESOME.... this Typing in boxing gloves is hard. Please ignore typos. cline
I keep forgetting to post this: The other night, during the polar vortex, I caught the bus. This is a downtown bus that terminates in one of the nicest neighborhoods in the city. It's usually full of people returning from work or shopping. A fairly high end crowd (so not 8th graders or addicts usually). At one stop, a woman at the front wanted to get off. She was riding on a handicap pass. She was mentally challenged, seriously overweight, and physically handicapped. She also had a big walker. She struggled to get up and struggled at the door for a while w the walker. Nobody helped. Including the woman waiting behind her to get off. Including the woman dressed to the nines with her little shopping bag siting in the front seat by the door. Not the men. I got up from the middle of the bus and made my way up there, leaving my bag by the driver. I explained to her I was going to help her and how. She kept saying "I'm handicapped". I reassured her and told her and showed her what to do. I got off the bus and took her walker, showed her how to hold the door, helped her down, and held her walker for her and helped her to the sidewalk. Miss behind her got off the bus and said "is that your bag?" Yes. I'm getting back on... I got back on the bus. Everyone just sat there. Nobody offered to help her. Nobody said "hey one of you healthy young people help her". Not a one. Everyone sat silently...waiting for the bust to move again...holding their bags on their laps...waiting... We when got to the last stop (mine), most people got off....silently. The driver was upset because he was five minutes late to the end stop. Which rider were you today? Kan
This reminds me of a psychology lesson we learned in class about altruism. Most people just don't have it. There were several examples, mostly in bigger cities with more people. One example was an elderly lady. She fell on some stairs. She asked for help, but no one helped. Some people even walked over her. Another was a 6 year old little girl who was lost on the streets. The tests were all repeated multiple times. The people in need of help were just actors in reality, but there was no way the other people would have known this. I grew up a boyscout. Believing we should help anyone in need, out of the goodness of our hearts. Stories like you just told really strike a chord with me. They're becoming a rarity I think. °~° °¬° Link to comment
Librarian of Doom
I know sometimes people suck everywhere...wondering if it's partially a regional thing, or a rural vs. suburban thing. Not on the same level, but whenever I'm by myself and I'm hauling A around in his baby bucket, everyone holds the door/offers to carry things. Or maybe it's just that a lot of people don't know how to respond to the handicapped, so they pretend not to see. /sad Hobbit Ranger seeking balance (and cookies) Current Challenge Link to comment
Kan
It was explained in my psychiatry class add a group mentality. If one person did actually do something, then more people would pitch on. The only examples they gave were from densely populated cities. It'd be interesting to do a study on what gets people to be altruistic, or just encourage more people to be altruistic. Maybe we should start a club :3 °~° °¬° Link to comment
cline
It's about a commitment to others and something beyond yourself for the good of others. Most humans never advance past some basic morality. They could if they tried, but they don't and society doesn't encourage it. The sad thing is, most people will say "oh that's so wrong! I agree!" But when it comes down to the moment, they also don't act. There is too much self glorification and self absorption in the world today. 1 I AM going the distance 'Cause all I wanna do is go the distance. cline
Elbow about the same today. Foot, same.I iced after lifting and tiger balmed (my new verb). I've been lifting in sleeves to keep the elbow hot. I keep it warm at home too. My plan this week is Muay Thai only 2x again to keep resting it some. So I don't know if I'll run tomorrow or bike. I can't stand the treadmill but hate running in the dark here bc many sidewalks are very uneven and it's not well lit. If I can, I might run around sunset if it's warm. Otherwise, I'm committed to indoor bike for a minimum of 25 hard mi (hills and hard cardio). Coach hates me running but I got a run coming up so I might do that. But he likes this plan as long as I'm careful about elbow and keep healing.Next step is to work w Muay Thai coach to fix hypertension problems. But not until I'm in good shape. Bought all the cat food today, bought new e reader bc mine died, and watched some great vids w spousal unit. Poor spousal unit was nasty sick yesterday. He never gets sick. Poor guy was so so sick. It was terrible. Made me sad. But luckily we are a hearty crew and heal well and he was about 90% today and even felt well enough to ride the bike at the gym. Yea spousal rebounding!I fasted all day Friday (26 hours total) and broke it with lousy bar food - which was planned. We went to the fights w a friend who had very little money, so cheap bar food was it. The fights were very good actually. Ate beautifully yesterday and today. Since so many ask, here is a typical lifting day:Breakfast around 7a - about 4-5 oz "hash" of local ham, cauliflower, peppers, and onions, and two eggs (no butter). Black coffee.PWO shake: 300 cal, 50g protein, 8g carbLunch: paleo pulled pork 5-6 oz (no sugar), paleo dairy free slaw of broccoli, carrots, and cabbage.Snack: paleo friendly meat stick and some nuts (grumbly belly)Dinner: 5 oz local turkey breast, broccoli, tomatoesI might have a hot toddy during Downton Abbey I AM going the distance 'Cause all I wanna do is go the distance. I was very happy. Heavy deads to heavy sets for volume 6x4 heavy sets all repped! Coach said my deads look great so that's good. So great to have form check.Moderate bench for 48 reps. I did 15,12,12,10Assistance work.2 hours total work w a bit of chatting. There's a guy getting programming from coach there now on Sundays and we chat some. Makes so nice. Also one of the woman in a group coach works with was chatting too. Super nice and she goes to my regular gym too. She's got a time trial coming up. Whoo hoo!!!I love love love being at the gym. I love even all my assistance work. And that made me happy today. My books made me happy. I played with the kitties and cuddled my one kitty and boy did that fill me with joy. And Downton Abbey is on! Oh and I'm watching this awesome old Robert Redford movie which makes me happy. And my turkey was so good! And I got to lift for two hours and wow.And my day started w someone sharing this on fb.
