Vengefulpear's Year of the Dragon: Dark Souls Edition

Welcome back to everyone to the first challenge of the New Year :D I hope you all had suitably splendid holidays!
 

My idea for this year is that I'll make it the Year of the Dragon! I know the zodiac has already passed it, but dragons are awesome!
 

This specific challenge dragon-theme.... The dragons from Dark Souls!

So last challenge started off with a bang! But I pushed too hard, rushed it and ended up fluffing most of the challenge. This time, I'm taking it a bit more slowly, and building those blocks up to make an awesome edifice of health and fitness! 

 

Seeing as this challenge is Dark Souls themed! I'm going to pick a dragon for each of the goals, so hopefully by the end of the challenge I'll have four dead dragons at my feet! 

 

 

Goal 1: Fat Loss (The Red Drake) 

 

26 / 42 HP

To avoid the deadly flames of the Red Drake you must be light and quick on your feet!

 

Lose 6lbs by the end of the challenge

+2 CON +2 DEX

 

Adding In a starting weight, it's pointless if I don't have a starting weight :tongue:

Starting Weight; 159lbs

 

To do this I'm going to eat 1800-1900 calories a day and keep myself as paleo as possible.

Goal 2: Strength Training (The Gaping Dragon)

To beat this humungous beast you must be strong!
 
Do Strength Training 3-4 times per Week 
+4 STR
 
I'm going with 3-4 and I won't say what will be in the training so that I can be flexible with what I'm doing. 
At the moment I want to work on my shoulder area a bit, and see how my pull ups/push ups are doing after the break. Basically everything :tongue: But I'll slowly take on more as the challenge progresses, doing sets of 4 x 8 of the exercises and then move up to a more difficult exercise when I can do that. What exercises and the progressions shall be posted later :)
 
This has been changed now because I have torn a muscle in my shoulder, so I'm just doing specific exercises but will try and maintain my 3 sessions a week minimum
 
I'm progressing carefully to avoid being squashed!

Goal 3: Running (Seath the Scaleless)

Swift feet will help to ensure you're not impaled by the vicious crystals of Seath
 
Run at least 3 times per week
+1 CON +2 DEX
 
Last challenge I had the goal to break 25 minutes for this challenge and I'd still like to do that so I'm not specifying how I will be running in the week. 
 
To break the 25 minute mark I intend to run 5km runs a couple of times a week, and then also start sprinting regularly. I want to try and be doing regular sprinting sessions every week in a few months. 
 
One of my goals for the year is to do a 5km run barefoot (unfortunately it will be on the treadmill for the moment!) so I might do some at the weekend on the treadmill. 
 
 
 
Goal 3: Sleep (Black Dragon Kalameet)

To defeat Kalameet, you must be well rested and sharp of mind. 

 

Go to bed at 11.30pm at the latest on weekdays

+2 WIS +2 CHA

 

This is something I'm terrible at, I'm always staying up too late and having to get up early for work and then trying to catch up on the weekends. I spend too much time perusing the internet before going to bed (don't we all?) So I'm starting what should be relatively easy and saying I will go to bed by half past 11pm. This isn't enough for a proper 7 hour sleep (I get up at 6am for work) but it's a start and I don't want to get caught in a dragon tractor beam!

Vengefulpear: You are going to be so awesome! Good for you for going back to the basics and creating a challenge that is realistic, challenging and extremely beneficial. You're going to rock this one! Sleep is super important and something I really struggle with as well. Our challenges are pretty darn similar :) I'm subbing this for sure and I look forward to your success! I think going back to basics will help both of us build strong bases and we'll become even more awesome afterwards :D Sleep  is really something that I need to work on, I usually get to bed around 12am, and that's really too late for a 6am start, although I have an hour on the train I usually only end up napping for 20 minutes, and that's not the same as getting an extra hour which I should easily be able to do.

Okay! Update time :D 

I think I'm off to a good start, I got to bed by half 11 last night! Yay! I couldn't sleep, but I got to bed :P 

 

On Monday I went for a run which was slightly harder than it used to be but that was to be expected really, and my legs felt (and still do a little) really cramped all day, and then my knee felt a bit weird afterwards. So I went for the run (success :P ) but still need to be careful I think, which is fine because that's what this challenge is all about :) 

Then Tuesday I went for a small warm up run and my knee still felt a little off (I am not doing well for injuries :P ) but then I got to the strength workout which, again, I was careful with and did 4 circuits, going through each exercise, pausing after I'd done them all and then going through again.

 

Push Ups 5 / 8 / 5 / 5

 

Squats 5 / 8 / 5 / 5 

 

Pull Ups 3 / 2 / 2 / 1

 

Tricep Dips 5 / 8 / 5 / 6

 

So that was a nice easy start to the challenge, I'm making sure that I do a lot of stretching to avoid injury as much as possible. I think I will try a few more reptitions of a few of the exercises (Although pull ups maybe not :P )

 

For tonight, I'm just going to rest :)

And I've added in an edit to my main challenge adding in my starting weight :) And I've given the dragons all HP depending on how many days I can successfully do that goal or how many sessions I need to do per week. 

Hopefuly that'll be a bit more adventure like!

I love the running HP! It totally makes it more like an actual game.

 

We have very similar running goals: 25 min 5k and a barefoot 5k are both on my agenda for this year. Although I don't have an official running goal this challenge. Good luck on the challenge!

Why hello there, fellow fruity overlord! :D

That challenge set-up is so freaking cool. I'll have nightmares forever after looking at The Gaping Dragon. If I could choose a pet dragon, that definitely wouldn't be it. Noooo.

Looks like a good motivation to becoming stronger and faster so you can either run away from it or just break it in two. :D

Update time! 
I went for a run yesterday (Take that Seath!) which all went well, the cramps are gone from my legs, it was a nice gentle run and stuff started going down in the audiobook I listen to when I run! So wins all round there!
 

However.... I've missed my bedtime for the past couple of days, I could give excuses but last night I didn't feel like it due to shoulder reasons (to be expanded) and then the day before I was on the phone to my lady-love and it got to 11.20pm and I realised I hadn't made my lunch for the day after OR started sorting my washing from the machine. 

 

So Kalameet is currently kicking my bum. But there's no limit on bedtime tonight (Just as well! My friend got into the Elder Scrolls Online Beta and he's coming over so we can play it!) and I'll be all on track by Monday. 

 

Now for the shoulder reasons... Some of you may remember that I fluffed up my shoulder last challenge, I think through a combination of going to far with diamond push ups along with a workout where I didn't warm up at all, let alone properly. But that was about the 20th November. And it's still not gone away. 

 

Tonight I'm going to head to the doctor's on the way home from work and hopefully get at least an answer/reason from a medical professional rather than me just going "Well it'll probably be okay later." I have been off it properly for a good few weeks so it's time to admit that there might be a problem!

 

So I'll update more when I know more, but that might mean that either the Gaping Dragon kicks my butt or I'll change my goal to another life goal I can complete, or to doing whatever the doctor recommends.

So I went to the doctors on the way home from work and it was ... :D not good news...


 


They think I've torn a muscle in my shoulder but couldn't offer too much advice because they're not sports specialists, so I'm going to head up to the nearby gym and talk to someone about it. But at the moment my only course of action they have suggested is to rest it until it's completely healed (because as my one workout this week showed, it's very easy to tear it again if it's not completely healed) 


 


Soooooo that's massive poop. I'll have to give a think to my Gaping Dragon goal and maybe go for a few more runs than originally planned!

Quick  update: I went for another run today which was good, and I was worried it would aggravate my shoulder (any tensing I might do up a hill for instance) but it feels totally fine. I think it was just still acting up from my strength training when I went for my run the other day. So I guess no shoulder training this challenge :( Sad times

 

I'm not sure whether to nerf the strength goal completely, or just try planks and gentle things like that, I was thinking of heading to the gym and using machines to workout specific muscles whilst keeping my shoulders safe, but that might be too much of a temptation to just walk a little further and do something else....
